Jack reached over Mina’s head and tugged out the metal pins. As he placed them on the mantle beside her, one by one, he filled his lungs with the scent of cinnamon and cloves floating off her hair.

She sighed. “You have no idea what I went through for that up-do.”

“I never liked it when you tied your hair.” A few more pulls dislodged the coiled bun. The braid unwound into a long queue that reached her ribcage. Placing one hand above her head on the pillar, he reached around her waist and tugged the elastic free.

She stepped toward him, her head tilting up. Their breaths mingled, her midnight eyes hooded by a dark fan of lowered lashes. “You never seemed to give a damn about how I looked.”

“For an empath, you’re not much good at reading minds. I almost grabbed you by the ponytail one day with every intention of freezing off the godawful scrunchie. Those things went out of style in the nineties.” She remained motionless as he worked his fingers through the silken strands, unraveling the thick mane until it fanned over her back and surrounded her delicate shoulders. He wanted to see her like this, without a single stitch on her. “There. Much better.”

Her brows furrowed. “You never considered kissing me before. What changed?”

Hell if he knew.

Laura Strickland – Mrs. Claus and the Viking Ship

I’m welcoming Laura Strickland to my blog today with her historical romance, MRS. CLAUS AND THE VIKING SHIP. Personally, I love everything Christmas and especially stories about anything to do with Santa Claus. This sounds wonderful!

The Legend of Santa Claus (as shared by Laura Strickland)

What kind of crazy writer takes on a legend? Some things are sacred, right? Elvis. King Arthur. The Easter Bunny. Santa.

In my time as a writer, I’ve boldly (and some insist insanely) gone where no writer should go and tackled not one but two legends. The first was Robin Hood, whose history I extended in my “The Guardians of Sherwood Trilogy” consisting of “Daughter of Sherwood”, “Champion of Sherwood” and “Lord of Sherwood”. I cry innocence here though because these stories tell of Robin and Marian’s descendants and for the most part leave the legend alone.

But, Santa Claus?

“Mrs. Claus and the Viking Ship” started out as a short story which I wrote to compete in one of the many contests posted by Fanstory, the writing community of which I was a member at that time. The writing prompt said “Christmas story” and the idea just popped into my head: what if I related the tale as might an aged family member sitting by the fireside on Christmas Eve, passing time for the anxious children by telling stories? What if this story revealed the real truth about Santa Claus—that he came from the far north as a Viking marauder who raided the northern coast of Scotland, willing to take a beautiful young woman for his prize? What if, for love of her, he learned that the one true gift in life is love?

My story didn’t win the contest. But it left the seed of an idea in my brain. I decided to expand the story and turn it into a holiday novella. What emerged is a tale of faith and hope and courage, of a fair-haired Viking called Claus and yes, the transformative power of love. My editor loved it. I hope you will too! Zrinka Jelic with Deck the Halls

I’m welcoming Zrinka Jelic to my blog today with her holiday paranormal novella, DECK THE HALLS.

Before we get into the specifics of the book, let’s hear a few words from the author in an interview.

How do you come up with a story line?

It’s different for each story. Some came to me in my dreams, mostly I drew them from everyday life and history from my country of Croatia that had a pretty turbulent past. I love to resurrect old legends of star-crossed lovers.

Are you an outliner, a write by the seat of your pants author, or a combination?

I guess I could say I’m a combination of both, to a small degree. I outline the story, but then don’t bother referencing it as I write. I don’t know why I bother with outlining.

What are you currently working on for your next book?

My work in progress has changed a few titles. At the moment I’m calling it “The Call of Destiny” and I like this title, I think I’ll stick with it. I’ve googled it, there’s no other book with this title. And I like to be original.

What was your most challenging book that you’ve written?

“The Call of Destiny” has to be the hardest yet. It’s a contemporary romantic suspense, which is outside of my normal genre, which is paranormal. There’s a lot of soul searching in this book, a lot of hard questions trying to find answers.

How did you come up with your title?

“Deck the Halls”, my holiday novella is the heroine’s business name. She landscapes in spring and summer, prepares the gardens for the winter in Fall, but during the winter she helps seniors decorate houses inside and out. That was her original idea when she started that business, but she never expected she’d get called to decorate houses of the rich who couldn’t be bothered to do the job themselves.

What was your favorite scene in this book?

The favorite is when the heroine finds a dog on the grocery store parking lot, but doesn’t know he’s her favorite clerk who always helped her get the bags into her car.

What was the hardest scene to write in the book?

It has to be the love scene, since it’s done one way. The dog or the clerk is actually a werewolf and can influence her to please herself while she is fantasizing about making love to him.

What drew you to being a writer?

When I was little, I often saw my mom sitting at night with a book in her hands. Even before she explained what was between the covers, I was curious about these things that seemed to fascinate her. Once I learned about the stories and fairytales, I was hooked. We spent plenty of time in our local branch library, where she checked out books to read to me until I learned to read on my own. I started “writing” when I was about four, too young even to know most of the alphabet yet.

What drew me to being a writer? First, the opportunity to share the stories running through my head. And then, the desire to honor all the authors whose books I loved by (hopefully!) giving other readers as much pleasure as those authors gave to me.

Do you have a muse?

I do. And she’s female, finicky, and fickle.

“As you can see your wonderful husband is still in one piece. You know me, my lady, this condition can change quickly. I’ve made arrangements that you two will meet again soon. You’ll receive further instructions, as they always say. So long.”

Jazmin knew the voice. Tears streamed down her cheeks. She grabbed a handkerchief, blew her nose and forwarded the message to Coleman’s phone.

“It sounds very personal,” Coleman said two minutes later. “You know the kidnapper?”

“Yes.” She had trouble getting the words through her constricted throat. “It’s Raoul Acosta, a Colombian drug lord.”

“And he holds a grudge against you?”

“Among other officers I was responsible for bringing his father to jail. He operated one of the most influential syndicates in Colombia.”

Coleman was silent for a minute. Jazmin thought he would come up with questions and already thought about how to answer them.

“Pack your stuff and get here. He announced more messages so we can only track them from your phone. I’ll call in the FBI and hope they find a trace on the video. Maybe the kidnappers told us where they are.”

“All right. I’m on my way.” Jazmin closed the phone, looked around the home she loved and hurried up to the bedroom. Ethan’s scent was still on the covers. She could hear his voice as he had whispered naughty ideas in her ear after waking up. She remembered caressing his perfect body and how they had made love.

She wanted Ethan back more than anything in the world.
