The Stadium of Bitter Love & Hatred

I cannot decide if I am being honest when I am feeling bitter. I guess it takes reflection. When I am feeling bitter, I should probably step back and ask myself, “Okay, what is really going on here?” But that’s because I believe that self-reflection is the key to understanding, and that understanding is the gateway to revelation and change. Improvement. I want to be my best self. I don’t think one ever completely gets there. That doesn’t matter.

Still

Still was released on this date in 1981. The album is getting a 40th anniversary vinyl release early in 2022. More info here at post-punk.com.

If memory serves me well, I believe the very first Joy Division track I ever heard was when I put on Still at my friend’s house. It was probably the rough recording of “Sister Ray” or “Ceremony,” but maybe not. I gave it about 20 seconds. Brutally raw, it didn’t grab me. I put on a different record.

It was only a matter of time before Still was added to my record collection, along with Unknown Pleasures and Closer.

I can distinctly remember when I heard Joy Division next. It was in a record shop in Dearborn. I was visiting my college friends, and we were doing what we did back then—and sometimes now—we were record shopping.

When we walked into the shop, the extended version of “She’s Lost Control” was playing. I was immediately hooked by that bass line.

It is hard to explain why a group of musicians can become so important to a person. I think generally it is because that band speaks for an individual in a way that the person cannot speak to others, and because the band becomes proof that the individual is not alone in feeling and thought. The person has a need to be understood, but doesn’t have an audience. Ian Curtis spoke to me. He captured what I was feeling and thinking at that particular time: the early 80s. The music channeled these feelings and thoughts which helped keep me going in a tumultuous period of my young adult life.

And so Joy Division became special for me…and Still is.

“Sound of Music

See my true reflection,
Cut off my own connections,
I can see life getting harder,
So sad is this sensation,
Reverse the situation,
I can’t see it getting better.
I’ll walk you through the heartbreak,
Show you all the out takes,
I can’t see it getting higher,
Systematically degraded,
Emotionally a scapegoat,
I can’t see it getting better.
Perverse and unrealistic,
Try to make it all sick,
I can’t see it getting better,
Hollow now, I’m burned out,
All I need to break out,
I can’t see life getting higher,
Love, life, makes you feel higher,
Love, of life, makes you feel higher,
Higher, higher, higher, higher,
Higher, higher, higher, higher,
Love of life, makes you feel higher.”
— Joy Division [image error]

This live footage of Ian Curtis performing is eerie and wonderful.

Good Cop/Bad Cop

My friend and fellow kid-who-grew-up-in-Flint, Catharine Batsios, has a poem in a new anthology of poetry from Flowersong Press called Good Cop/Bad Cop. The anthology is full of the poems of writers who have witnessed something, and have something to say. Many voices here. Congrats, Cat!

You can check it out and order here.

Take the A Train

Could your rainy Monday morning use a little extra pick-me-up? Duke Ellington and his orchestra’s “Take the A Train” might be just the ticket. Always fills my soul with joy.

Might also be a good morning for my playlist, Mood Indigo, if you just need to chill.

The Fine-tuning of Spacetime Fine-tuned

I keep go back into this figure. Adding and subtracting. I have now reworked the face, the neck, the hands, the figure’s right arm and parts of the jacket. A little bit of the jeans, as well…

Spacetime, Fine-tuned

After going back into the image within this painting many, many times, I finally arrived at a point where I was satisfied with the clothes/pose, and thought I was satisfied with the face (albeit masked). But the face wasn’t working for me. It was close, but if I was being honest with myself, it didn’t give me joy. It just wasn’t quite right, for me. There were a couple of aspects about it that I did not like. But unfortunately, I had gone into it so many times that I was beginning to stress the paper more than I wanted to. I began to worry about ruining the surface of the paper.

A couple of friends gave me some good feedback—the final piece of advice being, Get yourself a can of Coke and chill.

I literally went across the street and bought a case of Coca-Cola. It was late afternoon. I wanted to go back into the painting, but I was too high strung. I knew that I would ruin it.

Today, I took it out into the driveway, where there was plenty of sunlight. Then I went back into the image and gently worked on it. Photos of the image can help you figure out just what exactly is the problem, so I took a lot of photos, and slowly, I realized what I needed to do.

I feel a lot better about this painting, now.

Spacetime, What?

This new painting is a continuation of The Sublime series—a continuation of my preoccupation and fascination with theories and writings on quantum physics (combined with my thoughts about the future). It seems to me that we need to be advancing and evolving inward and outward in equal measures, meaning that we need to investigate the virtual just as much as the real, the infinite just as much the finite, the possibilities just as much as what we know. Time. Space. Perception.

Hope you enjoy this new piece.

To the Center of the City

On this day in 1978, a certain British post-punk band performed a certain song live on Granada TV. In Your Silent Face, Stuart Page spends a lot of intellectual and emotional energy analyzing this particular band and its now infamous lead singer. The band and lead singer were important to Stuart. Both spoke to eighteen-year-old Stuart like no other band. The song which aired on Granada TV was Stuart’s favorite song.

Pass on my gritty 80s coming-of-age novel, which is set in Flint, Michigan, today to somebody who loves Joy Division.
