In Which the Artist Promotes Three Books of Flint or Set in Flint

There are three fairly recent books out these days that are about the city of Flint, Michigan, or set in Flint, Michigan. I’m talking about my 80s-coming-of-age and ode-to-new wave music novel, Your Silent Face, which came out in paperback in 2021, Kelsey Ronan’s new release, Chevy in the Hole, and Gordon Young’s memoir, Tear-Down: Memoir of a Vanishing City. All three of us grew up in Flint. All three of us have our own complicated relationship with this Midwestern factory town that has had its American struggles. Why not bundle all three?

Weird Science

Weird Science borrows its name from a song of the same name by Oingo Boingo. This small painting is a continuation of the series, The Reality Project. As I think about and work through this series, with its variations, I am reading The Hidden Reality, by Brian Greene. The thoughts, the painting, the reading are all running parallel to each other. Separate, they never touch, and yet, something happens.

In Which the Artist Writes Now is the 80s Shot Out of A Sawed-Off Shotgun

If you are interested in art history, and the evolution of popular culture, then The Warhol Diaries on Netflix is a must see. And it doesn’t matter if you aren’t a Warhol fan because the series is an interwoven fabric of so much more than Warhol-phobia-mania. The series encapsulates the art, the politics, the phenomenon of a decade that is one of the most important singular moments in the history of American art (culture). It also gets at Andy Warhol, the person, as opposed to Warhol the personality (which is a layer of Warhol that I was delighted to add to what I know of him). The AI recreation of his voice is a wonderful touch, too. The series is an illuminating, tender and insightful love story. There is no denying that Warhol (flawed like anybody) had insight. I look around at so much of today and think, “Now is the 80s shot out of a sawed-off shotgun.” Many of today’s movements have been germinating for a long time. The culture politics are out of the closet, now—out of the back rooms—out of double barrels, scattered like buckshot. What have segments of generations younger than Gen Xer’s like me learned? Time and quality of life is perhaps more important than the cult of work; love is love; identity is; diversity, equity and inclusion make the culture stronger, happier, healthier. This of course is me reflecting my beliefs and politics through what I see occurring. The Mills and Zs, who rightfully do not like to be labeled, fill me with hope, like the 80s once did.

All Three Blade Runner Poems

"No Dove" is the third poem in a series entitled The Blade Runner Poems. The poems are meditations on themes from the films Blade Runner and Blade Runner 2049. I had to make "No Dove" because the general consensus is that Officer K is dying in the penultimate scene of Blade Runner 2049. I confess that as I sat in the theater watching the film by myself, this never occurred to me. Reviewers lean on the fact that the music that ushers replicant Roy Batty out of Blade Runner is reintroduced as Officer K leans back, bleeding on those snowy steps in Blade Runner 2049. I actually use a visual aspect of the scene of Roy Batty's death to refute the notion that Officer K is dying.

Here are all three Blade Runner poems.

In Which the Poet Introduces Another Blade Runner Poem

How do we make reality? We collect data and make arguments. I have continued to work on this poem.

No Dove: Another Blade Runner Poem

I have written a third Blade Runner poem. When I have the time, I will create an audio video clip for it. I have included the first two poems below this new one. I hope you enjoy all three.

No Dove

The assumption Officer K dies

at the end of Blade Runner 2049

is a miscalculation, I would say,

though I confess I am biased.

I was always pulling for the

replicants, even in the original

film, drawn in by the transparent

laser blue tractor beam of their

fierce love & loyalty, strength

& sensitivity—I would have

hidden them, I confess,

or run away.

In Blade Runner,

we know when Roy Batty dies,

the information transferred

when he releases the

dove—

the dove blurring into darkness

& neon rain on flapping wings after

so much desperation & violence—

symbolic of the soul a replicant

could never possess.

You would argue

music unites Roy & Officer K

in death, that when

the same music softly

framing Roy’s death is

reintroduce

in Blade Runner 2049,

we are triggered by

irrefutable data picked up

by our ears while the snowflakes

darken K’s winter

coat, masking the Christ-like

trauma, the wounds

& blood.

Since when, I would argue,

can we trust our human senses?

We are flawed. K has been

tempted & tested—has persevered.

Unlike the replicants, we cannot

trust what we hear, what we

remember. We are creatures of

faith. Good or bad, I have

something the critics lack—am

the ultimate fan of the future.

By the end of Blade Runner 2049,

Officer K has been beaten,

stabbed, shot but he is

not dying, I say.

Resting, I say. Preparing

his role for the third & final

film, I say. No dove released

by his hand, no death, I would say.

Mad World(s): A New Painting

I often feel like I make my best work when I go off-roading, as I did for this new, larger piece on burlap. I have not worked on anything approaching 48”x36” for a long time, and I haven’t tried to work on an unconventional surface for a long time, either.

I used to experiment more. Early on I used to try to paint on just about anything available, just to keep painting: cardboard, mattresses, abandoned doors, windows, plywood…

It has also been a heck of a long time since I have made a piece dominated by oil paintsticks.

My preoccupation with space, quantum physics and 80s music continues. Mad World(s) is a new painting in the series, The Realities Project.

Projector Intersection Engine Angel

There’s a new painting in my current series, The Realities Project. Early on I was thinking of the central image as a point of intersection where realities met, and were then projected.

I was thinking about differences in perception, the possibility that everything is being played out in slightly different variations beyond some imperceptible gap we haven’t figured out how to cross, the deterioration of our ability to trust our senses, the manipulation and domination of data…

After a few iterations of the image, I began to think of them as engines of reality.

And then a friend texted and said that the images reminded her of angels.

Projector, intersection, engine, angel.

The work continues to capture my preoccupations with inner- and outer-space, quantum mechanics, politics, and 80s music.
