I first began writing when on an extended work trip to Sweden. I was asked to keep a diary of our time there as a family and received positive comments on the style and humour of my regular reports. This led to me wanting to exercise the writing muscle a bit more, beginning with writing stories to read to my children, then on to historical drama and, after exposure to the UK YouWriteOn website, I honed my abilities to write short stories.
Short stories are fun! Every word counts, all verbiage must be ruthlessly expunged. When a detail is included it is a cue for the reader towards the outcome.
Show don't tell is the mantra for a good short. Sadly also shorts don't sell unless they are penned by a well-known novelist.
