Tweet of the Day, Good (And Slightly Belated) News About @KarlKGallagher edition.

Karl’s back from the hospital! That’s a relief. Buy his books: doctors are expensive.

I've been home from the hospital for a couple of days now. Surgeon took last tubes out. Doing much better. Standing up still aches.

Lab tests say they got it all. Will have follow-ups, but it looks like I'm going to be all right.

Thanks for everyone's support!

01/17/22 Snippet, DESERT.

Elves, Mr. Joe! Elves!

Patreon!

Joe didn’t know the first thing about setting up an ambush, so he didn’t even try. Oh, he got down, and out of sight. That wasn’t hard, what with all the gullies in this part of the Wildlands. And you never had to tell an orc to burn an enemy camp, because they learned that trick while still in the nursery. But ambushing was a human thing, and he didn’t have any of them along for the ride this time. I should fix that, Joe thought as three elven riders angrily swarmed around burning tents and slave-cart. A couple of gunslingers watching my back would be handy right now.

This bunch looked a hell of a lot better suited for the raiding trade than the three he had shot up five minutes ago. They were all keeping an eye out, always looking around, and they carried their looted carbines like people who knew how to use them. They weren’t chanting death lays over the bodies like elves usually did, either. And it was bad when the point-ears were too pissed off to sing. The madder they got, the better they shot.

Exiled to Sunnydale: The VULTURE interview of Joss Whedon.

As Sonny Bunch noted, there are people who think that this interview is favorable to Joss Whedon. Like Sonny, I heartily disagree with that stance. What comes across in the article is the portrait of a man who understands that he is in trouble, and more or less intellectually comprehends why, but still remains stubbornly certain that he really can’t be all that bad. Or, at least, he’s always been this bad; so what’s changed? Why has everything been taken from him now?

You can go round and round on that question: everybody agrees that it’s awful when bad things happen to good people, but nobody wants to be introspective about the sometimes selective nature of karmic backlashes. There could have been, indeed, other targets for the social media lightning storm that collapsed Whedon’s life. Ones that were equally worthy, too. But that’s not the same as saying that the storm wasn’t deserved. It was deserved. I hate saying it, because I loved BtvS and Firefly; but I can’t lie here.

My conclusion? Pray for the guy. Just like the rest of us, he rather badly needs it.

PS: …No, no PS. Just pray for the guy.

Dammit, I thought they were making a new Quatermass flick.

For some reason, I always mix up FIVE MILLION YEARS TO EARTH with THE MAN WHO FELL TO EARTH. It’s the latter that’s getting made (it’ll be a Showtime series), and I’m not upset that they’re doing that. I just want, you know, a new Quatermass movie. We’re overdue for one, to put it mildly.

‘Wake Up Little Susie.’

I don’t know if I’ve ever… listened to this song. I mean, as in paying attention to the lyrics. Huh.

Rumors of new CYBERPUNK 2077 update/patch circulate.

About blipping time:

It looks like a big update could be coming to Cyberpunk 2077 in the very near future. Fans on the Cyberpunk subreddit noticed that the build for Cyberpunk 2077 has been updated on SteamDB for the first time since October. Forbes seems to believe that the move could indicate CD Projekt Red is preparing for the game’s next big patch. Back in November, the developer revealed that the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X versions of the game would be launching “alongside another major update for all platforms” in the first quarter of 2022. Given that, it certainly seems like both of these could be released sometime in the near future!

Earlier this month, rumors began to circulate about a February 2022 launch window for Cyberpunk 2077’s next update, alongside the next-gen versions. A developer for CD Projekt Red claimed that the leak “does not add up,” but the release window still seems like a definite possibility.

Y’all know my opinion on how they should have prioritized CYBERPUNK 2077. I won’t rehash those opinions. Update the dang game, already. I’m happy to pay for more content, too. Just… get on with it.

1/16/22 Snippet, DESERT.

This will likely be the new opening.

Joe Grushnark-Baxter never understood why the elf slaver had shot his horse. It didn’t seem like the sensible thing to do. He could understand somebody shooting him, and trying to capture his mount. Horses were worth something. But doing it the other way just didn’t make much sense.

And he hadn’t been doing anything, either. It was a two-day ride north from Port Barclay to Newfort, which suited Joe just fine; he wasn’t in a hurry, and he figured people were watching the trains. An orc on a horse wasn’t going to raise any eyebrows, although Joe’s city accent might. But he wasn’t there to talk. Just ride.

Running across the elves and their slave-cart was just bad luck. He might have been tempted to just keep going, noblesse oblige be damned, except that one of the elves was on her own horse. She whooped in that way the wilder ones still had, and spurred her mount to intercept.

Looking at Costume-Con 40.

Costume-Con 40 is local (Rockville, MD), going on in April, and my SCA barony was talking about having a table there. I’m just not sure yet if I can actually vendor at the event, though. I’d be selling books, not costume-related materials. On the other hand, it’s reasonable to assume that folks who do FSF costuming might be interested in FSF books. And, on the gripping hand: my money is as good as anybody else’s when it comes to a table fee, hey?

I guess we’ll see.

In “The Universe Is Always An Empty Place,” I imagine that they are. Nobody ever asks deathworlders if they like being that way. Probably because what would they do if we said ‘yes?’
