History: Companion to Curiosity

I’m still editing my newest book, That Wylde Woman! When writing historical fiction, I constantly learn new facts. In one of the party scenes, I described a lovely spread of foods the characters were munching. During editing this week, I had to ask myself, is that possible? Was it a tasty condiment two hundred years ago?
It turns out Dijon mustard is far older than 200 years! It dates back to the Romans. Dijon mustard entered mustard history in the 13 century. Pope John XXII of Avignon doted on his idle nephew who lived in Dijon. A mustard lover, he created a position for his cherished but lackadaisical nephew as the “Grand Moutardier du Pape,”  meaning the grand mustard-maker to the pope. From this title comes the French idiom: “he thinks himself the head mustard-maker to the pope,” a laughable censure meaning someone thinks too highly of himself.

History Arouses Our Curiosity and Produces Entertaining Subplots

Indonesian Mount Tambora, not one of the tallest Mountains in the world, but a violent climax on April 10, 1815, proved Tambora to have the most powerful volcanic eruption in recorded human history. The explosive ash raised into the Pacific Winds and carried it over the earth, creating lower global temperatures. The results of that event were not felt until the following year and are now known as The Year Without Summer. The excerpt from That Wylde Woman has our main characters discovering the possible effects the explosion could have for England.
From Chapter 8:  Duke of Pangbourne speaking to Marleigh Barrett:

The other evening you mentioned getting the family country estate back in shape. I discovered the scientist-explorer we discussed, Robert Evans, is giving a lecture tomorrow afternoon. The poster said he will be speaking about being on a neighboring island near Sumbawa, Indonesia, where the Mt. Tambora volcano erupted last spring. I understand he has some fascinating theories on how it may affect harvests and other consequences worldwide. Would you like to accompany me?”
“Affect harvests here? From the other side of the world? Do you think that is possible? Seems a little far-fetched.”
“It may be. We will not know until we hear what Evans has to say. He is lecturing at the  Geological Society of London.”
“Indeed, it would be fascinating to hear what a scientist can theorize about a volcanic eruption affecting us thousands of miles and oceans away. Yes, I would be happy to go tomorrow.

Actively seeking ARC readers

Actively seeking ARC readers for the Historical Regency Romance below,

. . . from That Wylde Woman!

Marleigh shouted as the hands grasped her head, turning and lifting her head up. Plucking the crop lying beside her in the grass, she walloped the man twice on his back.

“Oww! Stop. I am here to help you!”

“Help me? Help me out of my clothing?”

“What? No! You must have injured your head. Not a surprise after that thundering near-collision on the bridle path.” He scooted her hat back, gently laid her head down, and stared intently into her eyes, shifting from one to the other, looking for a sign of injury.

Marleigh stared back as she drew in a sharp breath, stunned at the beautiful human leaning over her. He had bright blue expressive eyes, thick dark eyebrows, blond hair in large curls, beautifully sensuous lips, and a perfect Roman nose. He was the most blessedly handsome man she had ever seen.

Wow, how the time flies when editing!

My newest book is That Wylde Woman! It is a Historical Regency Romance.
Let me tempt you with some sneak peeks.

BTW: I am looking for ARC readers:gjgoldsmithauthor@gmail.com

Robert Mandeville

A cheerful, smiling Robert wiped the foam off his lip, shaking his head from side to side, “Did not have to use a drop of it. They killed themselves. I tell you, Odell, I felt sorry for those fellows. In fact, I doubt that I could have poisoned them. They were such likable chaps. They made me feel welcome. I was having an attack of guilt when the oldest cousin, James, walked in from the garden holding a double handful of yew berries. He plopped them in the big tureen of hot porridge and stirred them in.”

Lady Marleigh and Andrew Crofton, Duke of Pangbourne

Swansea blustered at the same time, “That minx is a danger to society. She needs to be locked up. Charges. I should bring charges!”

“NO MORE. ENOUGH OF THIS TITTLE-TATTLE!” Crofton thundered, his cavernous voice reverberating throughout the room and beyond.

The new Duke of Pangbourne motioned for Lady Marleigh to come behind him for protection. She walked at an angle, never taking her eyes from Swansea. As Marleigh started to pass, Andrew held up his palm to stop her progress. He reached for the sword, but an angryMarleigh, breathing hard, watched Swansea for any movement. She was unwilling to release her weapon.

French Kiss on BargainBooksy Dec 5

French Kiss  eBook is still available for only 99¢ through the end of the year. It will be featured on BargainBooksy Sunday, December 5th.

I have been feverishly reducing and rewriting some of my next book, That Wylde Woman! This is book one of three Regency Historical Romances, which is the genre I originally started writing several years ago. I waited until I had a bit more marketing knowledge and I have now found a few that work well.

I am very proud of this book. Perhaps because it was the first book I completed. Plus, I believe I captured the reality of what life was like for women of that time. I like to write strong women characters and complex antagonists. This novel follows that penchant. I have reread the story several times. There are parts where the disappointment level of the heroine is enormous and I feel her frustration to the point of tears every time.

Take heart! It is about love and the problems and struggles we all have in finding that one meaningful relationship. I can’t wait for you to read it.

That Wylde Woman! will be out in the spring of 2022. I’ll keep you posted!

Yea! Congratulations!

Joy Flynn won the $50 gift certificate from the Rafflecopter held during the Review Tour of my book, French Kiss! From 1599 entries, Joy was randomly picked. Congratulations, Joy! And there was also a $25 review blogger Rafflecopter random winner, Gina Rae Mitchell. Congratulations to you as well. I'm sure you both will be perusing your wish lists with delight.

I enjoyed writing French Kiss. All the past adventures came pouring back. I'd love to go back to some of those locations to enjoy them all over again. This time I'd like to get to Paris. Not just Paris, but the western coast, taste all the wonderful wine that is grown there, walk barefoot on the beaches and see if I can do a bit better in reviewing French before I go.

I hope my book help to inspire anyone who has wanted to go to Europe. The history is rich and everywhere. There is always an unexpected delight. Pick a good traveling companion. Someone who doesn't whine when connections aren't made or plans fall through. Wear comfortable, broken-in shoes, no flipflops. Have a great time!

And The Winner Is...?

Many of you know that French Kiss just completed a Review Tour. That is, a group of bloggers volunteered to read the book and write a review. For all those faithful readers of the bloggers, I donated a $50 gift certificate from Amazon or Barnes and Noble, their choice, in something called a rafflecopter. 1599 entries! One of you is a winner! The tour company randomly draws from the entries and has not told me who as yet, but your $50 Gift certificate is waiting for you.

Blog Tour Reviews

Wow, it has been many weeks since I wrote  a blogpost. Sorry readers. I had knee replacement surgery and then rehab. The surgery went well, I am still recovering and learning to trust this new knee. I just got back home yesterday and have been gone almost all of October.

Meanwhile, French Kiss has been on a Blog Review Tour. I have one more Monday and the blogger will post a review about French Kiss. There are several so far with a solid 4 star rating.

If you are a boomer, you may find this book reminiscent of days gone by, even a little nostalgic for the days of the ‘70’s with free love, drugs and rock n’ rock. I invite you to read the reviews on Amazon, Goodreadsand Bookbub.
