I have beenactively working on Book 2 in the Wylde Heart series. ‘Rewrite’ seems to be mymiddle name. Although some chapters went swiftly, other sections of events hadto be revised. Formatting is another story. It is a hard-won skill.

Wylde at Heart

 

      I'm working on Chapter 8 today and am excited about the second book of the series, Wylde at Heart. Because I am thrilled when history is a part of any story, my imagination is mixing creativity and historical facts again.                                 
     The principal characters have shifted in this book to the Earl of Wylde and Katherine, who, although a couple from 200+ years ago have similar problems to couples today. Of course, Robert returns as charming and shamelessly as ever.  I hope to have this book available in December for a heartwarming Christmas tale.

Lady Winchell-Smythe

     Even with a modest body of dialogue, some characters make a big impression. Lady Winchelle-Smythe iseasily imagined as wearing opulent clothing, jewels and always available for aquick jab at others. As you’ll see when you read That Wylde Woman! Marleigh iswise enough to know precisely how to handle Lady Winchelle-Symthe. Let’s take apeek at her. 

Excerpt from chapter 31
       Astout woman in the third row stood and began speaking in a superior tone. “Iam Lady Winchell-Smythe, and I am quite sure none of the ladies here will be speakingto common sailors, blacksmiths, orteamsters.”
                “Not thee Lady Winchell-Smythe? Oh my. I am soprivileged to meet you. Ladies, perhaps some of you are unaware. LadyWinchell-Smythe’s home is that same household the War office found to bescrupulously managed and upon which theybased the ideal model for efficient housing management. Your household must besuperior in every manner.”
                Holding her hands high for all to see and emulate,Marleigh clapped enthusiastically for Lady Winchell-Smythe, who brightenedconsiderably, smiled, and nodded left and right. Then turned to the back of theroom and gave the imperial hand wave to her admirers.
                As the applause died, her tone and intent haddramatically changed. Lady Winchell-Smythe spoke in high-pitched, roundedvowels. “Yes, thank you foryour generous applause. Yet, I have a question. How can such a charming andobviously intelligent young woman involve yourself with… common laborers?” 
                Lady Winchell-Smythe sat down, satisfied withher subtle inference regarding the American’s lack of propriety and reserve.
Anda bit later….
             Now there was a definite buzz. Lady Winchell-Smythe,not to be outdone by an American woman and realizing the vast possibilities this had for theorganization, stood to be heard above the general murmurs. “I will pledge onehundred guineas.”

Dreaming Dirty in MI Book Festival

Wow ! I have had a busy Month!

 

I thought in February, I was all done. Had everything all set. Then I got some late feedback and realized I still had a few areas that needed attention. I revved up and got to work. I just finished the rewrites on That Wylde Woman!, uploaded the revised version, and am ready for you to enjoy this book as much as I did writing it.

It is on a $2.99 Presale at Amazon, but that only lasts through this Friday, March 17. After that, the price reverts to the regular $4.99 price for the eBook. The paperback is currently up and available.

British Money during the Regency Era

British money is a bit more complicated thanAmerican. British coinage has a base of 12,whereas American is based on 10. Plus, wehave not only the difference between Americanand English coin values, but we also have toconsider the inflation over 200+ years.
When I read that a dowry is 10,000 pounds, I tryto comprehend what that means compared toWhen I read that a dowry is 10,000 pounds, I try to comprehend what that means compared to today’s money. Searching the internet, I discovered that in 2020 1 £ was equal to approximately $93, and accounting for inflation since then, we should figure each Pound (1 £) had a buying power of a bit over $114. That would make a £10,000 dowry around $ I.146 million in 2023 America. And it means that each pence back then had the buying power of what we could purchase for about 47½ ¢ today.
So Rob and Odell are gambling for farthings, ha’pennies, or shillings. Compare that to things we can buy today. A candy bar usually costs between $1.75 and $2.00 today; Rob or Odell would pay 3 or 4 pence. A banana is about 64¢ per pound. Rob and Odell would pay about 1.3 pence per 16 ounces. Apples are $1.49 a pound (weight); Odell could buy a pound of apples for 3 pence. I hope this helps you get a deeper understanding of the Regency money and costs.
