Writing - Jingles
Writing of any type takes time, and while there are days that we may cringe when a commercial jingle comes on TV or the radio, if the writer is successful, not only does the jingle become an ear worm that no amount of chewing gum to ward off, but the commercial makes us want to buy the product. Here are just some jingles from the past. What are some of your favorite jingles?

Writing First Chapters
It was a dark and stormy night.
Hooking a reader from chapter one is the first hurdle every writer, whether writing their first novel or their fiftieth must face. And though there isn’t one way to write a story, there are pitfalls to avoid. Some common first chapter pitfalls are the waking up scene, the transit scene, the rocking chair scene, the crisis scene, and the dream sequence. These pitfall first chapters typically don’t move the story forward and provide no context for the reader. Here are a few tips to keep in mind every time you start a new story.

Fictional Character Daily Routines
Daily life is full of routines. We get up, we eat, we go places, we talk to people. How much of those routines should be detailed in writing can make or break a character. In some scenes, you might find that certain routine actions are critical to advance the story and to give depth to your characters. However, unless there’s a particular quirky idiom nestled within a character’s daily routine that you want to use to charm your reader or make your reader dislike the character, detailing everything out should be avoided. After all, who wants to know every single time their favorite character uses the bathroom?

Character Animal Companions
When we think about an animal in a fictional story, we immediately cast it as the main character, but what about using animals as pets to your protagonist (or antagonist)? Pets are an essential part of people’s lives. They help shape our daily routines and are considered a part of the family, mourning them when they die or are sick. Adding an animal companion to your story will bring another level of reality and depth to your characters.
