On the Road Again – Being a Better Driver Can Be Easy
The other day I was driving home after picking up a couple of things at a grocery store. The route I was on is one I have driven an untold number of time before. The is one section of the route that has a fifteen mile per hour speed limit since the section has a couple curves that are narrow and blind.
As I headed into the first bend, here comes a vehicle in the other direction. I was driving too fast for the posted speed and was on my side of the double yellow center line. I hit the brakes and the other vehicle zipped by. That got my hear racing but there was only a near miss.

On the Road Again – When Is It Time to Start Your Drive?
Whenever we drive to a destination, we often have to ask ourselves, “When should we leave?” There are many answers to the question. Maybe you need to be at the destination at a certain time. Perhaps you are running errands, and it really doesn’t matter, or you need to be home at a certain time.. Another option could be that you want to avoid traffic at a specific location.
If you need to be at a specific place at a certain time, you need to know how long the drive will take and if there are any delays between you and the destination. If I need to be at my dentist’s office at 10:00 AM, I can leave at 9:50 AM. I can think of several ways to get there if there is a road closure or a crash along one of the routes open to me. The further away from the destination the earlier you need to leave the departure point.

On the Road Again – So You Want to Buy An RV
If you like to travel, you that there are many ways to get from one place to another. One is by an RV. There is a certain attraction to an RV. By RV I mean a motorhome, not a trailer. With an RV you can take your time to get to wherever you are going and still have your lodging with you. Obviously, there are some limits, but it is a wonderful way to travel.
Do your research before you make a purchase. My first suggestion is to determine what you can afford to pay for an RV. They do not come cheap. Next shop for a loan. Then get a rough idea of what the insurance will cost. The cost for the loan and the insurance will vary by the price of the RV. Being a veteran, I went to Navy Federal Credit Union and got a decent interest rate for the loan.

On the Road Again – When Is the Best Time for a Road Trip?
Now that COVID is behind us, to a degree, people are traveling. They are doing a lot of traveling! Trains, planes, and highways are full of travelers these days. Lats say that you want to take a road trip. When is the best time to take a road trip?
As you can imagine, there are a lot of elements that go into planning a road trip, any trip for that matter. First of all, you need to decide where you are going to go. Is the goal to drive to a specific place, visit it and return home? Or are you planning your route out and back so that you visit more than one place of interest?

Caregiving - Help the Patient and the Caregiver
This is not a normal topic for my blogs, but I needed to get these thoughts off my chest. Thank you for bearing with me.
A caregiver is a person who cares for another person who cannot take care of themselves. Caregiving is difficult if the caregiver is taking care of a loved one. Not only must the caregiver deal with the day-to-day care of the person (patient) who has the disease or injury, but they have to deal with their own emotional response to the disease or injury as well.

On the Road Again – Walking Safely: Watch Your Steps
Before COVID-19 hit I swam about five times a week doing 1000 to 1500 yards per swim. COVID caused the pool where I swam to close, and it still hasn’t returned to its old schedule.
With swimming out of the question, I changed to walking. Since I live in a suburban area of San Diego County that does not have sidewalks it became a bit of a challenge to figure out the safest way to walk.

On the Road Again – How Much Does a DUI Really Cost?
A month or so ago I was head out for groceries. As I drove down one of the nearby streets I noticed one of the hedges in front of a house was in shambles. “That is odd I thought.” And then forgot about it.
A couple days later I passed by there again. When I got home I called the next-door neighbor to the house with the damaged hedge to see if he knew what happened.

On the Road Again – What Are You Going to Find When You Get There?
As I have mentioned before, we all have many reasons for traveling. The reasons vary from trip to trip. With each trip we have our expectations of what we will find at each stop,
If you are planning to go to the Grand Canyon, you expect to see a big hole in the ground. You will be surprised by the size of the Grand Canyon as well as the majesty of the Grand Canyon. We will have expectations for visits to Athens, Tahiti, and Japan.

On the Road Again – Traveling with Children
Many of us at a period of our lives will travel with children, usually our own. The reason for the travel with children are varied. Maybe it is a scouting expedition or a marching band competition. Or maybe you are taking your child to a nearby school for an academic competition.
Then there are the family vacations. If the trip involves some family event such as a family reunion, the place, the date, and the time are pretty much set in stone. Build in a cushion of time to get to the event so you do not miss it. If that gives you an “off’ day, have some ideas what to do with the children for that day.
