The Little Girl in the Window

Well, folks, I'm still here... which means in the immortal words of Larry David, I will eventually have to do the "double goodbye."

Unfortunately, there are many retailers who rely on Goodreads ratings to tell them whether or not they should even carry a book.

Anyway, I wanted to announce that my upcoming psychological thriller, The Little Girl in the Window, is now up for pre-order on Amazon, and also here on GR. Release date is Oct. 1. Then it will work its way to other retailers.

Please check out the book on GR for a description. Thanks so much!

Going to BookBub/Bingebooks

Hi all

I have made the decision to add all my reviews to BookBub and BingeBooks from now on, and my new thriller, The Little Girl in the Window, will be there too. I will not be adding it to GR, though someone else may. I find GR just too difficult to navigate. Adding a book, subtracting a book, changing a cover, adding or subtracting a store, these are all things that should be a cinch. And they are, just not here.

So I hope you join me at BookBub and BingeBooks. I can also be found on social media.

Best,
C.G.

EDIT: I have to keep adding my NetGalley books here because this is where NG wants them. Sigh. But I will add to BookBub too.

EDIT 2: Unfortunately I think I need to be here because some retailers make their decision as to whether or not to carry a book based on its presence here. Bummer. I really wish GR would update itself.

Brooklyn Gothic

Brooklyn Gothic

My Gothic romantic thriller, The Best Man on the Planet, has been given a makeover. It is now called Brooklyn Gothic and has a gorgeous new cover made by JS Cover Designs.

Why did I do this? A few reasons. While I always loved the title The Best Man on the Planet, which is perfect for the vibe of the book, many people had told me this made the book sound like science fiction. I had never considered this!

The book, published in June 2020, came very close to being titled Brooklyn Gothic, however, I thought that was too similar to the popular TV series American Gothic. So imagine my chagrin when I watched Mexican Gothic come out and be so successful (which likely has as much to do with the author being so well known already! but a title can't hurt).

More and more, I felt my unwieldy title wasn't doing my book any favors.

I always loved the cover, but suspected it was too dark and that the split levels weren't meshed well.

One never knows what makes people want to read one book and not another. As an author, all you can do is give a book a fighting chance, and hopefully, I have now given this favorite book of mine that.

Welcome to Brooklyn Gothic!

C.G.

Pre-order now!

I'm excited to announce that my new psychological thriller, The Last Star Standing, is now available on Amazon for pre-order. You will get the e-version on April 23. Paperback is NOW available.

I hope you like this book as much as I enjoyed writing it. Like The Neighbors in Apartment 3D, I strived for a story that was not only different from the usual, but suspenseful AND fun. Hope you agree!

It takes talent to get away with murder...

Talent Show Successes

My upcoming psychological thriller, THE LAST STAR STANDING, is about a woman who once won the country's biggest talent show. It is based mostly on "American Idol" - which was not only much more popular than ANY show in the country 10-20 years ago, but has produced far more successes than any other talent show I can think of with the possible exception of "Star Search." (Or talent night at The Apollo!)

To that end, I thought I would compile a list of some of my favorite talent show successes, in no particular order:

David Cook
David won Season 7 of American Idol. My book uses Season 7 as its backdrop, and I won't deny that Cook was a bit of a muse for one of the main characters. I really like his music and own all of it.

Kelly Clarkson
Kelly is still considered the most successful contestant to emerge from AI, despite being its first winner. (A close second would be Carrie Underwood). She is still going strong with her talk show, which won an Emmy.

Fantasia
Fantasia won Season 3 which also had future Oscar winner Jennifer Hudson. I based a bit of the dynamic of my main character (winner) and my other main character (runner-up) on these two. I always thought Fantasia sounded like Macy Gray, one of my fav musicians.

Chris Daughtry
Chris came in fourth on Season 5 and his not winning this season is still considered Idol's most "shameful" moment. Hey, it's the viewers who decide! As we all know, Chris and his band went on to eclipse the three contestants who placed higher than him.

Susan Boyle
Susan was the runner-up in the third season of Britain's Got Talent and her audition is monumentally famous because, I guess, no one expected a woman who looked like a school teacher to have such a tremendous voice. She has since had a very successful career and her voice and life story are quite touching.

Calum Scott
While Calum only placed sixth in the 9th season of Britain's Got Talent, he went on to one of the most successful careers to come out of that show, dueting with Leona Lewis, who won the third season of the UK's The X-Factor.

Carrie Underwood
Carrie won Season 4 of American Idol and went on to become one of the world's most successful country singers. While Carrie's "Alone" is always listed as one of AI's great performances, I'm not a fan of it. To me, Carrie got much better after the show.

Jennifer Hudson
Jennifer won the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress in Dreamgirls but only came in 7th place in season 3 of Idol. She had very tough competition, including Fantasia, but rumor has it she got the boot because of a massive storm that knocked out power in most of her state, preventing many of her fans from being able to call in.

Adam Lambert
Adam placed second in season 8 of Idol and again it's one of those scenarios where the person who didn't win went on to much more success than the winner. Adam scored a prime gig after the show, touring with Queen as its new lead singer.

Britney Spears
Britney appeared on Star Search in 1992 at only ten years old, and already sang like a pro! If I went into everyone mega-star who came out of Star Search, I'd be here all day.

One Direction
I wouldn't call this hugely successful band a favorite of mine, but let us not forget it was formed during The X-Factor and came in third place.

My New Thriller!

You may have noticed that my new psychological thriller, The Last Star Standing, has been added to Goodreads. I'd love it if you mark it "want to read."

“With clever twists and an unforgettable heroine, this unique mix of suspense and pop culture deserves a standing ovation.” —Liz Alterman, author of He’ll Be Waiting

The Last Star StandingAfter winning iconic talent show American Star, Piper Dunner should be America's Sweetheart. But a series of disasters sends her back to obscurity.

A decade later, she has a new life—and a new chance at success. But when she starts receiving mysterious letters telling her she's been cursed, Piper realizes there's only one way for her to win this time... MURDER.

If you loved THE NEIGHBORS IN APARTMENT 3D or thrillers in general, then don't miss it.

The Best Man on the Planet gets rave from Gothic reviewer

Gothic writer and Bookstagrammer and Booktuber E.D. Lewis reviewed my first novel, The Best Man on the Planet, calling it his favorite book of those he read that were published in 2020. Pretty exciting!

Best Man is an homage to Jane Eyre mostly, but also Rebecca, and has many Gothic influences. But it has its own modern twists and turns and takes place in current day.

One thing I regret about Best Man a bit is its long, unwieldy title. It fits perfectly into the story, and is unique, but might be a bit too unique!

Gothic fiction

I spoke to The Secret Victorianist, Finola Austin, whose book Bronte's Mistress is out now about how Gothic fiction is still influencing fiction today.

My book The Best Man on the Planet was an homage to Jane Eyre.

Do you read Gothic? What's your favorite?
