In a Nutshell: A slow-burn somewhat-psych thriller. Entertaining but farfetched. Overall, mixed feelings.

Story Synopsis:
Twelve years ago, Romy Renskler inadvertently caused the death of the school prom queen when a prank created in a fit of jealousy went haywire. However, no one suspected Romy of being involved.
Now, Romy is a successful digital graphic designer living in NYC when the pandemic forces her to return to her hometown. In a bizarre turn of events, she begins a relationship with the man who was the last boyfriend of the prom queen, but he too knows nothing about Romy’s role in his girlfriend’s death.
When a mysterious little girl starts appearing in Romy’s window in the middle of the night and shouting insults at her, Romy wonders if she is losing her mind, or does someone who has stumbled upon her secret want to spook her?
The story comes to us in the limited third person perspective of Romy.

Mixed feelings almost all the way:
✔ The book is quite fast-paced and can be easily completed within a few hours.
❌ Conversely, the thrills in the book are quite slow-burn. A major chunk of the content is devoted to the drama than to the psych elements.

✔ I loved the way the pandemic was woven into the narrative. Right from lockdowns to panic buying to social distancing, the narrative felt real without going over the top.
❌ No negatives in this point for me, but I guess not everyone wants to read a book with covid yet. Still a bit too soon?

✔ Always love a story with a great dog. Mack the pitbull gets very few scenes but when he has to shine, he does!

✔ There is a steady supply of twists and turns. A few are good.
❌ Some of the twists are guessable, some highly exaggerated. Romy’s guesswork also seems farfetched many times.

✔ The characters are tricky to pinpoint. There are enough clues to highlight different aspects of a character such that categorising them into slots becomes tricky.
❌ Guessing the main culprit is quite easy if you are an avid thriller reader.

Two points related to the most common tropes in thrillers nowadays:
✔ There are some mysterious dark woods in the story, and these are wonderfully used.
❌ There is a dead phone in the plot. Never a fan of this trope!

✔ Love the creepy cover and the title! The girl in the window is the only eerie element in the story, but a good one.
❌ Her scenes are far and few between. Giving her the titular role made me assume that there would be more of her in the plot. This is what reduced the thrill factor of the story.
(I know that the author is working on a companion novel to this book, titled 'The Little Girl with a Secret'. Maybe that will help flesh her out more in our minds.)

✔ Romy’s character is an interesting one, and as we see things only from her point of view, she makes for a good narrator. I like how she took initiative throughout, instead of letting things happen to her.
❌ I didn’t like Romy’s musings about Avery going into the physical. Though only for a few scenes, it didn’t fit in with her character.

I picked this up mainly because I had loved a short story by this author. This novel did offer me enough entertainment to be able to blitz through it in a day, but as I was expecting a greater psych experience, it ended up being only a good instead of a great read for me.

You might enjoy this more if you read it as a suspense-drama than as a psych thriller.

3.25 stars.

When she was a teenager, Romy was jealous of Heath’s girlfriend and Romy decided to prank her. Unfortunately, the prank resulted in the death of Heath’s girlfriend and their unborn baby.

Twelve years later, Romy feels guilty about what happened. But she still can’t let go of her obsession with Heath. Romy and Heath meet again face to face after all those years. As the world is taken by storm by a virus, they go back together to their hometown. Romy finally gets to be with the person she’s loved since she was a teenager.

Then a pale little gosthly girl calls Romy a bad lady through her window before vanishing into the woods. And Romy fears her past has come back to haunt her.

The plot takes quite a while to really get going. It’s a rather slow-paced story that focuses a lot more on the romantic drama between Romy and Heath, than on the more interesting mystery of the little girl in the window, or on the psychological consequences of the protagonist’s tragic past. Which is a bit of a missed opportunity, as this doesn’t make for the most exciting psychological thriller you’ll ever read. But once the plot gets going, we get some really good twists that do make up for it.

When this book came out, it might have been a little too soon for the setting to be so downright in the middle of the first Covid lockdown. But now people are starting to feel nostalgic towards that time, because back then everyone all of a sudden had so much free time on their hands. So I think the setting actually works better now. And the book does a good job of making the Covid lockdown setting come to life and work together with the plot.

The characters have a foundation of greatness but they’re also a bit problematic.

Everyone makes mistakes in their life, so a teenage prank gone wrong is not something that needs to define Romy’s character and her entire life. But the things we learn about the protagonist Romy after that, make it a bit hard to care about her. Romy has pretty much been stalking Heath for years, slowly worming herself back into his life. Heath is a writer and he doesn’t know that Romy has been his cover designer for three years. Or that the only reason his books are selling is because Romy buys so many copies of them.

Love interest Heath is a bit stereotypical and romanticized, but with a good little twist. It’s cool to see that he too struggles with the past. As the romance books he writes are all centered around a character who’s very obviously based on his teenage girlfriend.

And the titular little girl in the window is a cool concept, but she doesn’t really feel like an important part of the story.

It’s an easy read with a good concept and a few cool twists.

About 15 years ago, Romy pulled a seemingly innocent prank with disastrous consequences. Years later, she is still plagued with the guilt.

It's now 2020, and covid is taking hold of NYC. Romy runs into her teen crush Heath, a crush she never gave up, and they decide to flee the city and go to their small hometown.

While their, Romy is haunted by a little girl, who seems to know what she did that fateful summer. Is the girl a figment of her imagination? A real person? Or her past haunting her?

To be honest, I wasn't thrilled when I heard about the covid component, I'm just not ready to read about it given we are still living in the pandemic, but I thought it was done incredibly well.

This was an intense action packed book and I will definitely read more by CG Twiles

This was my first read by C.G. Twiles and it was an excellent, fast paced and engaging read. The characters and their back stories were well developed and really allowed you to see the story from their different points of view. While some of the plot was a little far fetched, it kept me guessing most of the way through. I would definitely read another book by this author.

I’ve never read C. G. Twiles, but I’m so glad I did and see there are other books out there by this writer.
Romy is in New York living her dream, but 12 years earlier she was a young 14 year old girl with a major crush on Heath. When her crush begins dating the popular girl, Romy plans a prank. And this prank haunts her for the next 12 years.
Romy attends a book signing for a series written by her crush. Maybe she shouldn’t as she has many secrets she doesn’t want coming out, such as the fact that she is actually doing the artwork for his books under a different name. But she attends and when Heath invites her to have a drink after the signing, she almost can’t believe her luck.
Romy and Heath begin a friendship and Covid is happening in the background, still in the early stages. Due to events lining up perfectly, they end up going to Romy’s grandmother’s house in their hometown to escape the craziness beginning in New York. As expected, this prompts a variety of reactions from the town.
I enjoyed the writing and the pacing of this book. There are a few different stories going on here. I wasn’t too surprised at the ending, but I was surprised at all the different people and actions involved. This one rates high on the creepiness factor!

I just want to comment on how creepy (in a good way) this book cover is. It caught my eyes and drew me in. Thus I wanted to read this book.

Author, C.G. Twiles is a new to me author. This is a fairly fast read. I was finishing chunks of chapters in one sitting at a time. However, I found this book to be more of a slow burning psychological thriller. Personally, for me I was hoping that the moments that were meant to be spine tingling did make me jump some. Yet, for readers that like slow burning psychological thrillers without a huge body count, this is one you might like. I do seem to be in the minority when it comes to me feelings with this book.

"There’s no more perfect murder than a death that isn’t planned, just not prevented."

The Story: Romy Renskler was only fourteen when she fell in love with Heath Asher who is deeply in love with Misty Glass. Romy's jealousy caused Misty her life when her prank went wrong. Now twelve years later, Romy finds herself in Heath's life again and they ended up staying together in Romy's grandmother house to ride out the pandemic. Soon after, Romy's buried dark past is catching up to her when a little girl with eerily blue eyes appears in her window hurling insults at her.

My thoughts: If you want a twisty and messed up story, you can always count on C.G. Twiles to give you that! This was my third book by her and it never disappoints! Once again, I was blown away by the riveting plot and the well-written characters. The twist was unexpected and the mystery behind everything was so good!

As always, the writing was engaging and I was hooked to the story right from the beginning. I finished this book in one sitting! I liked that the present day of the story is set during the early days of pandemic when nothing much is known to the world yet. It was pretty interesting and intense although it wasn't the main focus of the story.

In a nutshell, this was another fantastic thriller by C. G. Twiles! From the plot, storytelling to characters - I enjoyed them all!

The Little Girl In the Window by CG Twiles. Thanks to the author for the gifted copy ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

After Romy plays what she believes will be a harmless prank, the town’s beloved prom Queen, Misty, dies. Twelve years later and she starts dating Misty’s high school boyfriend who doesn’t know her secret. But who is this little girl whispering in her window at night?

First off … this cover. My son kept staring at it commenting on her eyes and how creepy it was haha. The book is pretty creepy too. It took some totally unexpected twists. You can’t predict this stuff because it’s so wild. It was entertaining and held my attention.

“From then on, she’d only be the one who killed Misty Glass, town princess, descendent of the town’s forefathers, saver of squirrels.”

The Little Girl in the Window comes out 10/1.

Romy is a lonely 14 year old who lives with her grandmother and spends afternoons sneaking into the nearby pool. Heath is the lifeguard and they spend time discussing books and he encourages her to keep up her artwork. Romy develops a crush on Heath and looks forward to these afternoons but it all comes to an end when Misty Glass, the most beautiful girl in town begins spending her afternoons at the pool. Heath and Misty are soon involved and sneaking into the pool after hours where Romy spies on them. In a streak of jealousy, Romy decides to pull a practical joke on the young lovers that goes horribly wrong, ending in tragedy.
Twelve years later Romy goes to a book signing and “ accidentally” meets Heath who she has kept track of and has a secret connection to. The two are still drawn to each other and with the pandemic causing fear all through the city, she invites Heath to stay at the house she inherited from her grandmother. Being back holds mixed memories for them both and not all of the townspeople believe the public version of what happened twelve years before. As Romy begins to fall in love with Heath, a little girl with pale skin and eerie blue eyes begins appearing at her window whispering “ bad lady” and “ leave this place”. Is it Romys’ conscience pushing her to confess her darkest secret to Heath?
I have enjoyed all of C.G.Twiles books and this is no exception. I love how each of her books has it’s own unique set of characters and each story is different. I intended to just read a couple of chapters but stayed up to read “ one more chapter”. I love when I do not see a reveal coming and this one did not disappoint.
Great story, pacing and characters you can identify with, it doesn’t get any better.
Thank you for the advanced copy, this is due for release in October 1, 2021 but you can pre- order now!

This book was super creepy!

The concept kept me wondering if it was a ghost story, a trick or a clever murder story, but it flowed so well and I really enjoyed it.

I know it’s not Twiles’ fault but the covid plot (although relevant to the story) made the beginning very slow; we had to hear what it was and how people were reacting. As I lived through it, I just wasn’t invested in that element of it, especially as it’s still ongoing! But it was a brave attempt to include current events in the plot and didn’t feel shoehorned in like so many other contemporary stories.

Once that was done and the real mystery got underway, it was brilliant! I didn’t guess any of what had happened until near the end which is the sign of a great story. There were also plenty of things that I didn’t even come close to working out, especially some of the psychological and medical elements that worked really well.

My heart was racing at times, as I kept expecting the worst; I loved Mack as a character, but was continuously worried about him! There were also lots of minor characters that could have been involved in the ‘happenings’ which added to the mystery and kept the plot intense and well-rounded.

I also enjoyed the romance of the story. It could easily have felt forced or fake given the circumstances, but was really natural and yet still played into all of the rumours to keep us invested and guessing.

The Girl in the Window is creepy, suspenseful and well-written.

I received an ARC from the author & Book Sirens. Opinions my own.

What a rush!

The human mind is a wondrous thing. It not only has the capacity to store memories, but the ability to 'bury' those memories it deems harmful to our psychs.

For over a decade Romy has lived with a guilty secret and has 'forgotten' another event that took place on the night that Missy died. For over a decade Heath has obsessed over his lost love and the guilt of believing he didn't do enough to save her. He too, has a suppressed memory of that night. A memory showing what Romy did that night and what he did with the proof.

Will Romy live to tell Heath the secret she's been keeping and admit that she has loved him since she was fourteen? Will Heath ever move on from Missy? You need to find out yourself because I'm not telling.

If you enjoy a fast paced, suspenseful story with plenty of surprises and believable characters, then you will definitely enjoy this book. I hated putting it down and wished I had the time to read it in one sitting.

By now I should know that whenever I crack open a C.G. Twiles novel, I should cancel all my plans because it's nearly impossible not to devour her captivating stories in one sitting. I couldn't put The Little Girl in the Window down. Romy, a precocious teen, allows a crush on handsome lifeguard Heath to cloud her judgement. Jealousy motivates her to pull a prank that has deadly repercussions and haunts her (and others) for decades to come. When Romy reconnects with Heath years later, her feelings are just strong yet she struggles with the desire to come clean about the night that changed their lives forever. As her guilt festers, a little girl begins appearing at night, watching her through her window. But is she real or a manifestation of the shame Romy has tried so hard to bury?

As always, Twiles' characters, relationships, and dialogue spring off the page, full of life and authenticity. Her descriptions of the Connecticut countryside are vivid and establish the perfect atmosphere for this twisty thriller that had me scrolling at lightning speed to see what would happen next. I know it sounds cliché, but I did not see the twist coming.

Twiles should also be commended for the way she weaves in "the virus" with a light touch that ensures this novel will withstand the test of time.

While this tale is a thriller at heart, it offers readers plenty to think about i.e. who can you trust, what happens when a seemingly-harmless prank goes horribly wrong, and how do you cope when guilt lingers and makes you paranoid?

The day after I finished The Little Girl in the Window I awoke wishing I had more of it to read—it's that good! I can't wait to see what Twiles does next!

This is my first time reading something by this author so I wasn't sure what to expect. I have to say, I was very glad to have picked up this book. It took a little while to get into the story, but once I did, I couldn't put it down. The plot twists were definitely not expected and kept me guessing till the end. Romy does something in her youth that she totally regrets and is wracked with guilt about. Fifteen years later her past seems to come back and haunt her. Definitely an intense, well-written story with such detailed and vivid descriptions, I had no trouble picturing the the story and each scene. A gripping story filled with suspense, intrigue, and drama and will definitely have you turning the pages well into the night. A wonderful read!

The Little Girl in the Window is my new favorite from C.G. Twiles! I loved the twists, suspense, the creepy little girl, and little bit of a love story. This book continually kept me on my toes— and talk about an unpredictable twist!😱

I cheered on MC Romy, who was so relatable and clever. As with Twiles’ previous titles I’ve read, I enjoyed the writing style: fast-paced and shorter chapters are my jam!🙌 The last several chapters were intense(!!) and were followed by a very satisfying and thoughtful conclusion.

For the sake of not spoiling any surprises for future readers, I will say I loved The Little Girl in the Window! It’s a great thriller pick for the current #spookyseason or any season, really.😊 Visit @cgtwiles for more info on where to purchase this fantastic read!

C.G. Twiles has quickly become an auto buy author for me. I read THE LAST STAR STANDING in August and loved it. This was my September read by C.G. Twiles which I read in one sitting. I’ve got two backlist books still to read and I can’t wait!

This read had all the elements of a perfect thriller..a host of characters full of lies, regrets and secrets, obsessive love, and even a ghostly figure putting in a few appearances. Add in that this story takes place at the beginning of the pandemic and you get the air of panic and isolation.

I don’t want to give too much away so I’ll give you a brief overview of the plot.

When Romy was 14 years old, she made a mistake because she liked an older boy named Heath. A deadly mistake.

Romy is now an adult living in New York City. Romy reconnects with Heath who also lives in the city. Once the pandemic hits, Romy and Heath decide to go back to their small hometown and stay in the house Romy inherited from her grandmother.

What starts out as platonic roomies to get away from the pandemic, quickly becomes a passionate relationship for Romy and Heath.

Then Romy starts to see a little girl with piercing blue eyes in the window of her grandmother’s home..just a little reminder of what Romy did twelve years ago.

Thank you to @letstalkbookspromo and the author for including me on this book tour!

Can we talk about this cover !?😱 It creeped me out in the best way possible and set a great tone for the book!

When town sweetheart Misty Glass dies, no one suspects Romy, a fourteen-year-old loner with a big crush on Misty’s boyfriend.

Flash forward 12 years and Romy is living in NYC and reconnects with the man she loved as a teen. And when the pandemic hits and they return to their hometown, she begins to be haunted by a little girl who seems to know her secrets. But who is this girl and what does she know?

This was my first read by the author and definitely won’t be my last ! The writing style is quick and twisty and while you may need to suspend a little belief at times, I loved the ride it took me on. While I put some of the twists together, there’s one that I NEVER saw coming which is always a treat as a regular thriller reader.

The book does take place during the beginning of pandemic and does reference it throughout. This didn’t bother me in this context as the book is truly a thriller and not a book about Covid or illness.

This one is out now and available on KU!

Whoa.

What a thrill ride this book was! We meet Romy, a 14 year old girl with a huge crush on 18 year old Heath. What was meant to be a harmless prank turns into something much worse.

Fast forward and Romy meets up with Heath again in NYC. She’s an artist and he’s a writer. It’s not exactly coincidence that they run across each other. The author brilliantly weaves the COVID-19 pandemic into the narrative without ever actually naming it, ensuring the story will stand the test of time.

We the story unfolds, we see Romy grapple with guilt over the prank that caused damage to more people than she anticipated. Heath also clearly has some healing to do. Then, however, the mysterious girl in the window arrives, creating another twist.

This book is a long, winding road with unseen twists throughout. An excellent read that will keep you wondering just what other secrets there are to be revealed.

The Little Girl in the Window is a psychological thriller by C G Twiles. I really enjoyed this book because the book is well written, exciting, scary, I couldn’t figure out what was going to happen next; C G Twiles has written a fabulous thriller. The story begins 12 years in the past. 14 year old Romy has a big crush on 18 year old Heath. When life guard Heath meets Misty, he falls hard. Romy slips out of her grandmothers house at night and releases one end of a tarp as a “prank”. Unfortunately, Misty gets caught in the tarp and drowns. Fast forward 12 years and Heath is a writer and unknown to him, Romy designed the book cover. The pandemic is raging in NYC and Romy and Heath go back to their home town and Romy’s grandmother’s house. Romy is being awakened at night by a young girl looking in her bedroom window saying “bad girl”. I can’t spoil the book but I will say that it gets more intense and surprising. This is a very good thriller. I received an arc for free and am leaving my review voluntarily.

"The summer she was fourteen years old, she fell in love And she killed two people." Can you think of a more riveting lead for a book? I certainly can't. Ever since I read these words at the start of "The Little Girl In the Window" I was hooked and remained hooked until the end of the novel. Every book by C.G. Twiles' is like like being on a thrilling rollercoaster and I couldn't wait to read this latest one. I'm so glad I did! It's written in her inimitable fluid style and, as usual, she masterfully creates an atmosphere of suspense. The twist at the end is completely unexpected and I didn't see it coming. Twiles' characters are rounded and nuanced, never perfect, and are very easy to connect with and feel for, a facet which pulls readers like me further into her story. Finally, the specter of a beautiful dead girl that hangs over the novel and a disappearing young girl with eerie blue eyes in the window contribute to the feeling that you're reading a delicious ghost story. You must read this book!

"The summer she was fourteen years old she fell in love. And she killed two people." With that beginning, I was hooked for sure! As a young teenager the protagonist, Romy, does the unthinkable, and we ride with her through the ups and downs of her guilt-filled life that follows. This story has it all, including the global pandemic that forces Romy to return to the 'scene of the crime.' I really enjoyed the layering of mystery in this story. While we know what Romy did, there is more to the story than meets the eye. Several times I though I had figured out some specifics, but each time I was fooled. The last several chapters blew me away and left me saying, "I didn't see that coming" more than once! This is another hit by C.G. Twiles and I can only hope that the author keeps them coming! Thank you @cgtwiles, Muradal Publishing, and BookSirens for th advance review copy. I am leaving this review voluntarily.

“The summer she was fourteen years old, she fell in love.
And she killed two people.”
I was hooked from those first sentences. As a young teen Romy accidentally kills beautiful and pregnant Misty Glass. She only meant to prank Misty and her boyfriend, Heath. But naturally the prank goes bad and Misty dies. Years later, Romy and Heath meet again in Brooklyn, and become friends. And then the pandemic hits and since Romy’s grandmother’s house is sitting empty, they use it to escape the city lockdowns and return to the small town where they grew up. And all is going great, until a little girl starts showing up at the window in the middle of the night. Is it the ghost of Misty’s child coming to haunt Romy?

This is my third CG Twiles book and after each one I decide it is my favorite. And that has happened again here. I really loved this one, and I especially loved the character of Romy. Romy was so relatable and funny and insecure and smart and someone I would want to be friends with.

WOW, what a thrill ride this book was

I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.

So, what can I say about this book, except it was bloody brilliant!

What an amazing, unexpected twist. It sneaked up behind me, and whacked me upside the head, I saw stars - in this case five.

I really do enjoy the unique imagination that this author has, concocting some really unusual scenarios from some really simple plot lines.

Great characters, although Romy did get on my nerves from time to time. The story was built so well, the characters likeable, and at times not so likeable.

It's difficult to write this review without giving away anything, so all I can say is if you enjoy a fast paced suspenseful read, with a twist that even I didn't see coming (I usually see most of them coming) ... read this!!

Highly recommended!!

Talk about not seeing the direction a story is going?! Bam 💥 I was blindsided by this one. Another creepy #spooktober read for you. This is fast paced, eerie and really makes you uneasy. Short chapters (yay my favorite) really help propel this along. I should have called in sick to work because I kept sneaking pages 🤫

I really enjoyed Romy, our main character. She is extremely relatable and makes some smart decisions which is nice considering most thrillers make you shout “come on” while reading them at character stupidity lol

I also really enjoyed all of the back story that we were given. It really rounded out the story and helped make the big twist a little more believable. This was my first book my this author and it sure won’t be my last. Bonus points on the creepy ass cover 😆

A very good plot, well written, The Little Girl in the Window got me hooked from the beginning. The reader has a chance to read the same event through various different perspectives. Each one telling the story adds a little bit and all of sudden the whole thing is in the open. How can people put together a complicated story to cover a murder? How a simple action may put a plan down and turn it ineffective? Why do our minds when shocked by things that happen to us simply block everything down to protect us? A great story, fast-paced and entertaining!
I downloaded a free copy of this book and this is my honest opinion.

This paranormal story had me glued to my seat. I was drawn in from the first few pages and my heart was pounding throughout. I had to find out what would happen next, but when the truth was revealed I was shocked. This is a must read, you will be sorry if you miss it. I received a free advance copy of this book and I am voluntarily leaving my review.

Having read C G Twiles, ‘Last Star Standing’ a couple of months ago, I was keen to read her latest and ‘The Little Girl at the Window’ did not disappoint.

When you read a book in one sitting, there’s only one word for it: unputdownable.

From the cover image itself - the black and white on the kindle lent itself to the atmosphere - the read sets the pace for a taut psychological thriller. A story of lies, regrets, obsession: and the air of isolation thrown in the backdrop of the pandemic.

Twiles has an engaging way of writing. Her dialogues and characters come alive. The twists keep you wondering and even though this read felt a bit of a slow burn, it never let me go.

A great choice for a #spookyseason read.

Thank you @cgtwiles for sending me an e-book via @booksirens. Thoughts expressed are mine and the review is left voluntarily.

Can’t wait for your next.
