DARING DESTINY TROPES & TEASER

Hello Beautiful Readers!
Sometimes, love takes you by surprise—especially when it’s the person you least expect. My newest book in the Charming Irish series, out on January 13, is Daring Destiny, a story of opposites colliding, vulnerabilities exposed, and two people daring to risk it all for something real.
In this exclusive sneak peek, witness the moment everything changes for Brennan and Astrid—the kiss that shatters walls, defies doubts, and sets the stage for a romance that’s as raw as it is undeniable.
They’ve been dancing around each other for months, but now? There’s no going back.
Now’s your chance to preorder “Daring Destiny” and follow Brennan and Astrid’s journey through love, ambition, and the courage to embrace what fate has in store.
Because sometimes, when you dare, destiny delivers.
⬇ Read the teaser below and see how it all begins! ⬇
She pulls back slightly, trying to put on a brave face. “I’m fine,” she says, but the crack in her voice tells me otherwise.
I tilt my head down, meeting her eyes. “You don’t have to be fine. Not with me, A.”
Her walls crumble. All of her strength slips away and her tears flow freely, like a dam has broken.
“It’s so stupid,” she murmurs. “My family…I hate how they make me feel.”
My hand glides soothingly up and down her back. “I get it. I’m here. I’ve got you.”
We stand like this way for what feels like forever. Lost in the quiet of our moment in the middle of a crowded bar.
Just us. Here. Now. Simple.
Astrid blinks up at me through her tears. Green eyes search mine and suddenly, we’re teetering on the edge of something I’ve wanted—but deliberately avoided—for months. There’s no fucking question about it. I can feel it. The way her breath catches, the way her hand lingers on my chest.
I lean in.
One second we’re standing there, and the next, my lips are on hers. It’s not gentle, or tentative. It’s raw. Urgent. Like every moment I’ve held back is pouring out of me all at once. I grip Astrid’s face to pull her closer. She grabs my shirt like she’s afraid to let me go.
Nothing has ever felt like this. Her lips are pliant and delicious, but there’s a fierceness behind the kiss. Like she’s been resisting as much as I have. Pure and simple, this is a release. All the tension and uncertainty has unraveled.
When we finally pull apart, both of us are breathless, but our foreheads remain pressed together. My hands are tangled in her hair.
“God, I’ve missed you,” I murmur.
She nuzzles my cheek. “I’ve missed you too.”
In this moment, everything shifts. We’ve crossed a line and there’s no going back now. Somehow, I don’t fear what comes next. She’s it. My person. There’s no question in my mind.
Of course, the reality of my life threatens to creep back in. The acquisition, the board, the IPO. It’s all still a shadow. Astrid doesn’t realize I’m about to be tied down in ways I’ve never been before. She has no real concept about the mounting pressure I’m under.
I push the thoughts out of my head. Right now, all I care about is her. Everyone else can fuck off. I’m not going to take this moment for granted.
I kiss her again, softer this time, savoring the way her lips move against mine. Astrid reaches up and brushes her fingers lightly against my cheek. I lean into her touch. The look she gives me—vulnerable, and maybe a little unsure—makes it impossible for me to resist.
“Let’s get out of here.” I take her free hand and squeeze it gently.
Astrid gives a small nod. “Yeah.”
We walk out of the bar together, hand in hand. My car is parked out front. I open the door for her and get into the driver’s seat once she’s seated. Neither of us says anything as I start the engine, but her hand rests on my thigh. Like I’m hers.
Which is so fucking true.
Astrid’s house is minutes away, but each second feels like an eternity. The sexual tension between us is building with every block.
When I pull up to the dock and park, she turns to me. Her voice is low. Inviting. “This might be a stupid question, but would you like to come in?”
“Yeah.” I gulp. I cut the engine. Hardly able to believe this is really happening.
She looks at me and tilts her head.
Daring me to take the next step.
How can I resist when she’s my destiny?

DARING DESTINY SNEAK PEEK

Hello Beautiful Readers!
I’m so pleased to give you a sneak peek into Daring Destiny, book 2 in my Charming Irish series. It’s the story of Brennan McGloughlin, the tech genius no one noticed in high school and Astrid Gustafsson, the class president who seemed to have it all collide years later, sparks fly in ways neither of them expected. Brennan’s hyper-focused world meets Astrid’s perfectionist facade in this opposites-attract romance where love dares them to embrace their destiny—flaws and all.” Or, better yet, preorder here.
Here is your sneak peek!
What the fuck am I doing here?
Never, in a million, billion years, could I have predicted I’d end up at my fifteen-year high-school reunion.
I mean, who even has a fifteen-year reunion?
Uh, my disorganized, indifferent class, that’s who I guess.
We blew past our ten-year and I didn’t even notice. No interest. High school sucked, it wasn’t for me.
I never fit in.
Until recently, my all-consuming focus has been the company I founded when I was at Foster Business School, CognifyAI. We revolutionized the real estate industry by turning market data into actionable insights for realtors, offering predictive analytics, personalized property recommendations, and immersive virtual tours, all through an intuitive, graphical interface. We scaled the technology into the hospitality industry, making my company the highest-grossing technology company in the world after we went public.
Shit.
I’m such a fucking turd.
Even my own thoughts sound like elevator pitches.
Chill out, man.
I’m trying to, for fuck’s sake. Which is why I’m standing here in the renovated cafeteria at Garfield High with a whiskey in hand and a polite smile plastered on my face. I’m completely out of my comfort zone. Social outings like this make me cringe. I suck at small talk. It’s pointless. Irrelevant. Boring.
I wouldn’t have bothered, except for one reason.
Astrid.
Just thinking her name sends a little thrill down my spine. And, a lightning bolt of remorse.
She was my low-key obsession back in high school, The ultimate in main-character energy. An ice-blonde goddess who glided through the halls, dressed like a superstar as if she owned the place. Kind and compassionate to everyone. Hot as fuck. Every guy wanted her.
Especially me.
Unfortunately, a socially awkward, slightly overweight kid never stood a chance with an it-girl like Astrid. No, she was hooking up with Jake Thompson, the asshole basketball superstar who treated her like garbage but looked like a Greek god.
He’s not here tonight, of course. Mr. Big-Time NBA superstar couldn’t be bothered.
Oh, how times have changed. Tonight, I’m wearing the BDE crown on my own, I guess. Last month, Wired named me the most influential tech CEO of the past decade. I guess it’s true, but it’s weird for someone who deliberately stayed out of the spotlight to suddenly be recognized everywhere.
Hence, why I’ve parked myself in a dark corner. Too many classmates I don’t care for suddenly want to be my best friend. No fucking thank you. Clout chasers are not my jam. As soon as Astrid sees I’ve made the effort, I’ll make my escape.
Whoa. There she is. She looks incredible, as usual. My God, after all these years it’s uncanny the way she has an effortless way of looking like a million bucks.
Tonight, she rocks a shimmery black dress. It dips low enough to enhance her impressive cleavage but not enough to be obscene. Her long, blonde hair falls in waves over her shoulder. Other than the dark eyeliner, which makes her green eyes pop, her face is clean and natural. Even her jewelry is classy. Simple gold earrings and a matching bracelet. Sky-high black heels make her slim, toned legs look like they go on forever.
God. It’s like she walked straight out of some fashion magazine.
It’s hard to believe it was three-ish years ago when she reached out to me through my brother Connor, the bass player in Seattle’s biggest band, Less Than Zero. Coincidentally, she was his realtor. Sold him a multimillion-dollar house on Hunt’s Point, where the richest people in the Seattle area live. When Connor mentioned she wanted to get in touch, I thought it was a joke.
Why would the high-school “it” girl want to talk to me? A guy she never acknowledged?
I did what any self-respecting guy with a past like mine would do.
Ignored her.
She was persistent, though. Turned out she wanted help with this reunion. Apparently, convincing a bunch of thirty-somethings to relive their glory days wasn’t as easy as it sounded, even for the most popular girl in the class. She had a brilliant idea and I was, apparently, the one who could help her.
I’m still not entirely sure why I agreed. Maybe it was the challenge. Maybe it was the allure of Astrid-fucking-Gustafsson paying attention to me for once. Whatever the reason, we hit it off.
And, we created something special.
Gazing over at her chatting with some of her old friends, I’m glad she’s having fun. She’s been so intent about making this a success, this must be a dream come true. It’s packed. Our classmates are completely immersed in the interactive experience which, to me, is a much better way to catch up with someone you haven’t talked to in fifteen years.
Who wants to listen some rando drone on and on and on about career, marriage and their snotty kids?
No fucking thank you times two.
“Brennan.” Astrid’s smooth, whisky-tinged voice hits me in the core, as it always does.
She strides toward me. Her smile is forced and tight, which I totally understand. I’m, deservedly, not her favorite person at the moment.
I try to sound casual, like I haven’t been keeping my eye on her all goddamn night. “Hey. Congratulations. Your idea’s a huge success.”
“Our idea,“ she corrects, gazing out at the crowd. “You’re the one who made it all happen.”
Side by side, we look around the room and for a moment, things feel normal. We’re two people who worked hard and used our respective skills to make an innovative concept a reality.
Astrid spent her time gathering key moments from high school from the official photo archive and images pulled from social media. With a team of developers, I created the technology powering the interactive display.
Now, snippets of everyone’s lives over the past fifteen years are being projected on sixty-foot walls. It’s a living yearbook come to life. With a companion app so people can continuously update and reconnect based on their interests, job titles, and locations.
A culmination of the best and most heartbreaking years of my life.
Maybe she’s in a conciliatory mood. I take a step toward her. “Well, it was a team effort.”
Astrid holds up her hand to stop me and squints at me incredulously. “Don’t even. Not tonight.”
I wish I could say her snark catches me off guard. It doesn’t.
Truth be told, I’m honestly not sure why she’s even speaking to me.
We stand there awkwardly while the room around us buzzes with energy. The digital displays continue to randomly flash images from our high school days. People are laughing, reconnecting, living in the moment. As cool as everything has turned out, the familiar niggle starts to take root in my brain when things get uncomfortable.
I’ve gotta get out of here.
“Actually, before you bolt, I do need to talk to you. Come outside with me?” Astrid can read me like a book, she knows I won’t last long in this environment.
I do my best to keep my voice steady. “Uh, okay. Sure.”
Before I can fully process what’s happening, Astrid takes my hand and leads me toward the exit. We slip out the back and the noise of the reunion fades behind us.
Outside, the quiet night air is a stark contrast to the festivities inside.
Sweet. Sweet. Relief.
Astrid looks up at the sky. I watch as her shoulders relax and tension melts away.
“God, I needed some peace.” She shakes out her shiny, blonde hair. “It’s exhausting, you know?”
I nod, because I do know.
As I’ve gotten to know Astrid for real, it’s something we have in common. She’s actually much different than I thought she was as a teenager. She seemed so comfortable around everyone. A naturally gregarious, outgoing person everyone aspires to be.
It’s an act, though. She shoulders too many expectations. Cares too much about what people think. Feels pressure to always be perfect. Believes she has no choice but to keep her shit together at all times. It’s funny how we’re the same in this regard.
It’s exhausting.
“You hide it well.” I can’t help but voice what I’m thinking out loud.
She laughs bitterly. “Years of practice.”
We fall into another stretch of silence, standing together in the dark.
“So…” she says quietly. “Can we talk?”
“Yeah.” I brace myself for what’s coming next.
The end. This is probably the last time I’ll ever see Astrid. My heart is breaking into a million pieces and I’m not sure how to stop her from…
Without thinking, I reach out and take her hand, comforted by how natural it feels. She doesn’t pull away, just flicks her eyes up to me and blinks rapidly. As if she’s trying to stop from crying. My heart thunders in my chest. She moves in closer.
Thu-thump.
Suddenly, her lips are on mine.
In the beginning, it’s a soft kiss. Tentative, as if she’s testing the waters. Then, it quickly deepens and I find myself pulling her flush against my chest. Instinctively, my arms wrap around her as I lose myself in the moment. She tastes like peaches and heaven.
When our lips finally part, our foreheads remain pressed together as we try to catch our breath.
“I didn’t mean to…” She clutches at my waist.
“Neither did I,” I mutter, though it’s a lie. If I could kiss Astrid forever, I would.
I planned to.
We stand there for a moment, holding each other. Neither of us willing to let go. The air between us is charged. Electric.
She gazes up at me, her eyes soft but guarded. “Thank you.”
“For what?” I’m genuinely confused.
“For being here tonight. I truly didn’t think you’d come” She takes in a huge breath and lets it out, like she’s nervous.
Considering the situation, I’m unsure how to respond. “Why wouldn’t I be here? It was important to you. To us.”
She smiles wistfully and tilts her head. “Brennan.”
“I… Uh…” I don’t know how to respond.
Astrid shoots me a look as if to say, shut the fuck up.
So, I don’t bother finishing the sentence. It’s pointless to bullshit her. I’m not capable of giving her what she needs and we both know it.
I’m utter crap at relationships. I don’t know how to nurture them. Prioritize them. Communicate properly. I never have. Probably never will.
Astrid should have been different. She’s everything I ever dreamed about. My ultimate fantasy. And I had her. Until I fucked up.
Ruined us.
Astrid sucks in a breath. “So…turns out I’m pregnant.”
Wait, what?
Reality crashes down, unforgiving. Like a hundred million buckets of ice water.
If I can’t manage a romantic relationship with someone as perfect as Astrid…
How in the fuck can I be a good father?

A DAY DATE FOR ALEX & JACE

Pip, our newest rescue, gallops beneath me with a rhythm as smooth as a heartbeat. Up ahead, across a swaying sea of golden-red leaves, Alex rides Gloria like she’s part of the wild.
This stretch of our ranch, dressed in the vibrant palette of a Pacific Northwest fall, is where we come alive, away from the demands of daily life and the whispers of the road and my band, Less Than Zero, calling me back to the stage.
“Race you to the creek!” Alex looks back at me, her laughter mingling with the rustle of leaves and a distant call of a bald eagle overhead.
Without waiting for my reply, she nudges Gloria into a gallop. I can’t help but kick Pip to follow, feeling like a million bucks as the cool autumn air slashes against my face.
The thrill of the chase, the freedom—it’s a stark contrast to our structured days wrangling kids and handling chores on the ranch.
We reach the stream, where the clear water murmurs secrets to the smooth stones. Dismounting, I lead Pip to where Alex is securing Gloria to a nearby tree.
“Cheater!” I tease.
“Nope. Strategic advantage,” she tosses back, her blue eyes sparkling with that undimmed sense of adventure that first drew me to her years ago when she was only eighteen.
We unpack the picnic I packed earlier—a simple spread of cheese, fresh fruit, and cider—under an old maple tree. This is our secret place. Where the world shrinks down to just the two of us.
“How long do we have? Jen and Becca have some party to go to, right?” Once a week, my sister and her wife watch our kids so we have a few hours to reconnect and remember who we are when we’re not just mom and dad.
Alex’s blonde hair catches the light of the afternoon sun. “Not until later. I think they took them into town for ice cream.”
“Well, then we have a little leeway,” I raise my glass and she clinks hers against it with a smile.
She waggles her eyes. “I brought an extra blanket. To us.”
Alex reaches for my hand and pulls me down onto the soft blanket with a playful tug. She nestles into my side, her head resting against my shoulder, and I can’t resist wrapping my arm around her, drawing her even closer.
She tilts her face up to mine and I lean in. Our lips meet in a kiss that’s slow and sweet, filled with the love and laughter of over a decade together. It’s these moments, quiet and gentle, that remind me just how deep our roots go.
“Remember when we thought we could handle the comeback tour with a newborn?” Alex laughs, the sound richer than the coolest melody my band ever wrote.
I think back to a couple of years ago. “I was less wise then.”
“I still love it when we’re all together.” She twirls a lock of my hair around her finger. “With every day, every challenge. I just want us to always be together.”
Too soon, the sun begins to sink, painting the sky in strokes of orange and purple, We need to go back, but these moments with Alex and my family are what I live for.
The music, the fans, the open roads, they’re embedded in my soul but this, right here with her, is my life.
My heart.

Chapter 1
Ivy
Three Years Prior
I jackknife up with a gasp, heart racing, as blinding light floods my bedroom.
I never get used to this.
Each morning, ever since I returned home from Hedge Academy, Hilde, our house manager, slips in and sweeps open the curtains to make sure I’m awake. A strict instruction from my father. He expects me to be up early.
Even on Saturday morning. It’s barely 5:30 a.m. on my 18th birthday.
Hilde scoots out and shuts the door behind her. She doesn’t need to say anything more. I’m expected to be an obedient little girl who follows her daddy’s rules.
Which makes me cringe, though I tamp it down and play along.
On the way to my en suite bathroom, I take a moment to gaze out the floor-to-ceiling windows at the expansive view of Lake Washington. Below the meticulously manicured gardens, a stone path leads to the place where laughter once echoed from a bustling dock and fire pit. All of it has been removed, replaced with thorny shrubs blocking access to the waterfront.
The altered landscape is a constant reminder of what was lost there. Every joyful memory has been overshadowed by our family tragedy. My brother, Forrest, drowned in the lake five years ago today. My birthday is now the anniversary of his death.
Forrest was the golden child, destined to take over my father’s business. Our family and friends were celebrating my thirteenth birthday with a barbecue. Suddenly, laughter turned to eerie silence when he dove into the lake and didn’t come up. Not only did my brother’s future end, but all happiness in our family drowned with him.
Every birthday since, the air in this house thickens with unspoken grief, making me feel invisible. Neither my mom nor dad will acknowledge it’s my birthday today. It’s as if my existence has been muted by the past.
Life as I knew it ended the day I entered my teens. Now, I’m expected to take over Bright Shipping before my dad retires. I’m not allowed to have typical teenage friendships. I’ve been under the strict and watchful eyes of nannies and tutors, even while away at boarding school. My father also strictly forbids me from dating. He says the distraction will derail my focus and compromise the rigorous path he’s laid out for my future.
I know the truth. He doesn’t want anyone to defile his precious daughter. God forbid I have fun.
I’m fucking lonely.
In therapy, I’m learning to navigate my grief and resentment by reclaiming parts of my life to learn what feels authentic to me. Including my birthday. This year, though I feel like I’m a million years old, I’m technically an adult. She tasked me to take some small, but significant steps toward asserting my independence.
I have a plan.
After a quick shower, I pull on a pair of joggers, a simple tank top, and tie my hair into a high, messy bun. On my way downstairs, I catch a glimpse of myself in the mirror. This isn’t the sculpted and polished Ivy Bright my dad prefers. My version of Ivy is ready to grasp some semblance of weekend normalcy.
My version of Ivy is going to enjoy one day free from a legacy of tragedy and expectation.
Descending the back staircase to the breakfast room, I spot my dad, Stanley Bright, already seated at the head of our sleek, glass-top formal dining table with his back to the panoramic view. The spread before him is mouth-watering—organic fruits, artisan bread, imported cheeses. I’m used to the many silent displays of our family wealth.
“Good morning, Dad.” I try to keep my voice neutral as I approach the table. To pull this off, I need to be clever. And not mention my birthday.
My dad barely looks up from his tablet, where he’s no doubt been reviewing market analytics or shipping news. “Morning.” He surveys my outfit, his eyes narrowing slightly. “Interesting choice for breakfast attire.”
Typical. I choose to ignore the slight, pulling up a chair. “It’s comfortable.”
“Yes, well, remember the importance of maintaining a polished appearance.” He returns his attention to his breakfast, but not before adding, “Your position will demand a certain standard of professionalism, best get in the habit now.”
His words sting. A reminder my life is a series of stepping stones with no deviation from his plan. “Actually, I was hoping we could talk about the summer.”
“What’s to discuss? You’re leaving for Stanford Business School in a couple of months.” He sets down his fork. “Until then, I’d like you to start your training…”
“…Dad, stop.” I push around a slice of kiwi on my plate with my fork. “I need a break and I’d like to take the summer off. I’ve worked hard to get both my high school diploma and my undergrad degree in four years. Stanford will be intense. I’m not planning on lying around watching reruns on Bravo. I have an idea for a productive, but more creative way for me to spend the next few weeks. Art class. Dance. Things I used to love and won’t have time for once I start school again.”
My dad sighs. “Ivy, you have the intellect and the education. Why squander your time on frivolous dreams? Reality has much more to offer you.”
“I don’t see it as squandering,” I counter softly. “I want to live a bit. It’s not a lot to ask. You play golf every Friday and Sunday. Do crosswords. I’ve even see you watch Shark Tank a time or two.”
My father pauses, considering this. “Well….”
“Please.” Leaning on the table, I rest my chin on my palms and give him my best puppy-dog eyes. It used to work all the time. Now we’re about 50/50. No, 70/30 in his favor.
“I don’t want you to waste time you can’t get back.” He pauses and I almost think he’s going to wish me a happy 18th. He doesn’t, but he does surprise me in a different way. “You know what? You’re a good girl. This summer you can do your little hobbies. Your mom will probably be thrilled.”
“Thank you.” I ignore the backhanded dig. “Where is Mom?” I glance up the staircase and back at him. No sign of my mother, Allison Bright.
Dad clasps his hands. “Packing. She’s coming with me to Asia. We’re leaving in an hour.” He gets up from the table. “She needs a change of scenery to….refresh.”
Wait, what? They’re leaving? Today?
His carefully chosen words remind me, painfully, my birthday is irrelevant to them.
Will I ever get used to how badly it hurts?
“I do have some conditions. While we’re gone, other than your classes, keep to your usual routine here. We don’t want to worry about you. I’ll leave you several books I’d like you to read, which are vital for your future.” He places his hand on my shoulder, the only sign of affection he’s shown me in years.
I look up at him. “Would it be okay if I stayed with Emma Rogers? From the academy? You like her and her parents are clients. Maybe not all the time, but it would be nice to have company from time to time.”
“Well…” He scrutinizes me so I’m careful to keep my puppy-eyes fixed with sincerity. “Only if you’re not imposing. Make sure to let Hilde know—and Ivy?” He narrows his eyes on his way up the stairs. “I’m trusting you. Don’t make me regret it.”
I’m shocked, I never thought he’d go for it. Trudging back up to my room, I’m actually confused at this turn of events. Did my parents think it was acceptable to abandon me for the summer to live with the house staff? With restrictions to boot?
Ridiculous.
Thank God for my quick thinking. At least now I’ll have someone to hang out with and activities to look forward to this summer. I pull out my laptop and search for dance workshops. A three-hour session late this afternoon catches my eye—perfect. I register, but, truthfully, it hardly feels like a victory.
As I’m scrolling through some art classes, I hear a thump thump thump of a suitcase on the stairs. A car engine starts. My parents chatter past my bedroom door and down the hall until I can’t hear them anymore. Peering out the window, I watch them get in the car. Then it disappears down the long driveway.
Neither of them bothered to say goodbye. Wow. I’m lost in a bit of woe-is-me for a few minutes. Tears prick my eyes and it takes a while to tamp them down. I’m not crying today, though. No way.
Then it dawns on me.
I’ve been handed the greatest gift I could ever ask for. A summer of freedom.
At least for eight weeks.
Which is a lifetime. Fifty-six days. The possibilities are endless.
I might get a tattoo. Try sky-diving. Oooh, maybe a concert…or a festival. Yes! I can take a road trip to the Olympic Mountains and go hiking.
Wait.
Am I going to do all of these activities with Emma? How depressing.
She’s nice and all but we’re not close. Actually, she’s immature. It’s understandable, I guess. Most of my boarding schoolmates hung out like normal students while I earned my diploma, got a business degree, and learned the fundamentals of our shipping business.
Without playing a tiny violin, in a couple of months, I’ll be fast-tracking an MBA while my so-called peers have the time of their life, joining sororities and living the college life. Activities I’ll never get to experience.
Yeah, Emma and I are a million miles apart. It’s a pretty sad state of affairs.
Wait. A. Minute.
I don’t need to hang out with Emma. Hilde doesn’t have Emma’s phone number, and I’m not about to give it to her. Plus, with my parents being in a completely opposite time zone, they won’t call to check up on me—my dad will be too busy working and my mom barely acknowledges I exist. If I tell Hilde I’m staying nights at her house, no one will be the wiser.
With Emma as my unwitting alibi, I’ll be able to do whatever I want.
Ooooh. The possibilities are endless.
I don’t have to be Ivy Bright, heiress and perpetual goodie two-shoes. I can be whomever I want and do whatever I want, whenever I want to do it. No one is going to stop me.
Oh, the adventures I’ll have this summer! I’m going to try everything I’d never be allowed to do under the oppressive rules of my dad.
Maybe after dance class tonight I can hang out in a coffee shop…or, a bar. Somewhere casual, where I could strike up a conversation—I’m surprisingly adept at small talk. I don’t want a nightclub vibe or anything too precious or too divey. Definitely not somewhere where my parents’ friends might see me.
Hmmm.
The studio is close to Pike Place Market. There’s bound to be somewhere nearby to stop by after class is over. I Google that shit and, bingo, there’s an Irish pub called Kells a couple of blocks away. I launch their website and it’s perfect. Casual. Low-key. Nondescript. Tonight there’s even a live band. There’s no chance anyone will know me there.
Except…I have to be twenty-one to get in.
Well, I didn’t get perfect grades for being stupid. It takes me all of thirty seconds to find a video on YouTube on how to make a fake ID.
It’s surprisingly easy. I upload my driver’s license into Photoshop. Change my birthday so I’m twenty-four, not eighteen. Then, it occurs to me…I should also use a fake name. On the off-chance I get caught, I can’t risk dragging the Bright name through the mud. I decide to use my mother’s maiden name.
I type in “Ivy Davies,” save my handiwork in the cloud and locate a place where I can print and laminate the card. It’s amateur, sure, but hopefully it will pass.
Holy shit.
I’ve never dared to defy my father completely. I’ve never kept secrets—other than the fact I own a vibrator which—eww—is frankly none of his business. What’s a girl who isn’t allowed to date supposed to do?
Anyway, the excitement of doing something scandalous is intoxicating. I find myself giddy at the possibilities the next eight weeks will bring in my journey of self-discovery and adventure.
Self-discovery and adventure…
I look at myself in the mirror. As my counselor says, tune into what you want and don’t let anyone make you feel bad about it.
Tell me, Ivy. What do you really want? If you could have anything?
I’m not going to lie. I know, but never dreamed it would be possible.
I want to be touched. Loved. Adored. I don’t want friends, I want a summer fling. Someone to hold my hand and kiss. Someone to explore my sexuality with, before I hit Stanford.
Let’s be honest, I’m a horny, eighteen-year-old virgin and I will never, ever, ever get this opportunity again. The rest of my life will be dedicated to running the family business and marrying someone my dad approves of.
Starting today, I’m finding a slice of happiness.
On my terms.
And, I’m not going to feel bad about it.
Much love,
Kaylene
