The Collection Settings
So when I began this journey on the BART in 2008, I was traveling through the city of Oakland to get home from work. I had a long legal pad and a pen with me and had almost 30 mins to kill. So I wrote. I wrote what was around me and in front of me.
And that was Oakland, California. I wanted to write this city in a good light since I had fallen in love with it. Yes, it has its crime (Kenny gets mugged in the 1st chapter) but its sense of community is astounding. Oaklanders will rally together quick for a celebration or a protest. I wanted to show that in this series. Although the other books are mainly taking place somewhere else (more about that below), Oakland is where Kenny's base is.
Book 1 - Takes place solely in the Bay Area (with trips to the Arctic or Norway). Oakland is where Kenny, Shawn, Johnson and Christian live. Tonya lives in Richmond with her partner. Teddy resides in Emeryville while Jerry lives in the Glen Park neighborhood of San Francisco. Percy's estate is hidden in Marin County (west of Mt. Diablo). We do see Kenny's older brother, who resides in Miami.
Book 2 - First part is based in Southern California (mostly Long Beach), but we make trips back to Oakland periodically. Miami plays a part a bit as we are introduced to Kenny's younger brother, mother and father. The rest of the book takes place in the Hellish Realms (he travels thru 4 out of the 7 hells; Matagal- the limbo of jungles, Kur- fire and brimstone, Naraka- the hell of tortured souls, and Shiva- frozen hell of flames).
Book 3 - We are back in Oakland, more people have moved in. We see a lot more of Miami and Kenny's family. They are taken hostage by the villain and are being held in the many divisions of Inside Earth. So we journey through the entire area of the Earth. Dinosaurs, faeries, nymphs and wyverns are living here, among other beings hidden from the outer world. There's a Leviathian, too.
Book 4 - Starts in the only remaining heaven left, Nirvana. We meet Aries, Ryujin (the Dragon God) and Vishnu. We also head back to Oakland just to prepare to journey to Antarctica. Pandora's box makes an appearance releasing violence, sickness, corruption and hate. We are introduced to who the Antichrist is.
Book 5 - The Entire World is the setting. The end? Or the beginning?

Tonya Brown: The Closest Friend
Do you have that friend who is ride or die? Someone willing to fight a demon for you?
This is who Tonya is to Kenny. Having been there for him since High School, I didn't really have a single person to base her off of. She is one a few characters made from the back of my mind. She constantly struggles with her Mexican heritage, coming to terms with her full self by book 3. She was born in Oakland, moved to Florida due to her family being relocated and then moved back to Oakland after graduation. She starts out in a relationship with Phoebe (a character never seen) and ends up a single mother of 1 by the end of book 2.
She one of the many female leads I have in The Collection and is essential to Kenny's powers activating. She brings him happiness and joy that radiates in his golden aura. Shawn and her have a shared history as well, making the two of them very important to Kenny. She is the aunt to Johnson's son, Madison causing them to have a shared past, as well. Her temperament is choleric; being short-tempered, fast, and easily irritable. It was a joy to create her.
Tonya keeps the boys on their toys and having her in the same room as Shawn was an extreme pleasure: (after a point where Shawn has a broken arm and everyone is having dinner)

“A toast!” Tonya beamed raising her glass, “To friendship, love and each other!”
“How about toasting to something less cliché? Like the ozone layer or outer space.” Shawn said.
“A toast then,” She winked, “To having two functioning arms!”
As the series progresses, I give her more of a fighter role but nothing supernatural. Just wait for book 3 to see what I mean. I never had anyone in mind to play her in my mind's movie version, but if I had to pick I would say Rashida Jones.

Percival Beal: The Host of Intelligence
What can I say about Percival Beal? He's the smartest man alive! He literally knows everything.
The trick with that was, making him not be a know it all. He's very relatable to the people he surrounds himself with. He is a licenced doctor, professor, psychiatrist, therapist, politician, engineer, mathematician, technician....the list goes on. His gift comes from the Soul Seed of Athena; you know, the Goddess of Knowledge. He was sent to bestow knowledge, create education and structure to the world to prepare it for the Messiah's coming. Percy has had many lives (most notably William James Sidis) until his final life (reborn in 1962) before the birth of the Kenny (b. 1978).
I created this character based on a teacher I had in 11th grade high school, Mr. Ealy. He was extremely smart but related to his students. He had a sense of debonair to him and always wore a smile. Percy took Kenny under his wing as soon as the latter's epiphany of his fate. He only had a short time to teach him the basics before the villain was aware of the Messiah's awakening. He created the Galaxy Lab to house all the knowledge he knows and it strengthens his powers. Each memory is a star in the manufactured universe. Being the conductor of electricity, he has an abundance of all forms of it there is; static, current, hydro and solar (he can pull down the sun-rays- book 5).
Although, Mother Nature can summon electricity to her side as well, she respectfully uses it only during storms that are created. Percy can pixelate in and out of form as a means of transportation and he gives Christian a form of this implanted in his left hand. I had fun writing The Host of Intelligence when writing dialogue between himself and his close friend Christian, or Kayla, or his Protector; Pierson. I didn't want to make him all powerful, but damn near close. I mean, he is protecting the Messiah! And training the Protectors to do the same.
I never gave a second thought to who I would have play Percy; Alexander Skarsgard .
