Contest Winners! NK Jemisin's books

I woke at 3am to the sound of my own voice on the answerphone.  Big winds here tonight and we must have had a power outage, which always causes the phone to reset itself.  So I am up, listening to apocalyptic sounds from outside.  What better time to choose winners for Inheritance Trilogy books?

Random.org has just spoken.  Thank you all so much for entering, retweeting, and helping to spread the word about these exciting novels!  Even if you didn't win, I hope you guys get to read these at some point.

The winner for The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms is: [info] ed_rex

And the winner for The Broken Kingdoms is
[info] tom.me.dm

CONGRATULATIONS, guys!  Please contact me with your mailing info and your signed books will be speeding on their way.

Thank you, everybody!

Giveaway: The Broken Kingdoms and The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms by NK Jemisin

Last week I hauled myself to London to see NK Jemisin interviewed by Niall Harrison aka [info] coalescent   at the monthly BSFA meeting.  I had to cut out early to make my train home, but I'm so glad I went!  I got to see the always-amazing [info] fastfwd   and her husband Chris, had a quick word with [info] swisstone  , saw [info] fjm   for 3.7 seconds and met some other lovely people briefly.

And I met Nora!  You may remember that I read The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms when it came out and thought it was terrific, so my expectations were high.  I was not disappointed!   The author was a gracious and thoughtful interviewee.  (I hope I didn't annoy her with my weird and somewhat inchoate questions.)  She also read from The Broken Kingdoms before talking about some of the thinking that went into the books.  She is an engaging speaker and comes across very naturally with warmth and humour.  If I hadn't read her work, it certainly would have been clear just from hearing her speak that she writes with rigor and that her work is multilayered.  Listening to her, I felt like I was glimpsing the worlds in her head.

I have a copy of The Broken Kingdoms kindly provided by Anna Gregson at Orbit because the book was not out last week when Nora was in the UK.  It is out now and Nora has signed this copy, which I'm now going to give away.  I also have a signed copy of The Hundred Thousand Kingdoms.

I've been very good and haven't read The Broken Kingdoms (my own copy is on its way) so as to be able to offer it pristine with its signature.  I'll hold the giveaway open until the end of the day Sunday 7th November.  Leave me a comment, or if you're on Twitter, retweet and I'll see you.  There will be one winner for each book, so please specify which book you want.  I will send the books anywhere in the world.

so much in common w/Barliman Butterbur

Here's why I haven't been able to get on my own friends page or read my own posts: a few weeks ago, feeling deranged over spending far too much time clicking and peeking at stuff, I decided to drop offline for a bit to clear my head.  To reinforce my good intentions, I locked myself out of various websites on purpose by doing something funky to my system.  Then I forgot I'd done it.  Completely.

I figured it out because I discovered I could get on using my son's computer, which I'd neglected to barricade.  I'm not very efficient.  When I hide chocolate from myself, I always find it.

I'm still going to be a bit scarce until I can get these revisions done.  Been waylaid by half-term and coughing kids in the night, but fingers crossed I'll be done soon.  Meanwhile, keep an eye out for my giveaway of NK Jemisin's new book The Broken Kingdoms, signed by the author when I got to meet her at the BSFA meeting last week.  More about that very soon.

No, really, I can't get my own journal

Thanks to everyone who replied to my last post!  I'm getting your comments via e-mail but can't access my journal or my friends page--even though I can post.  I'm posting this from my home page, which works for some reason.

I have contacted support and they asked me to try various links and report error messages, which I've done.  Still waiting for a result on that.

I'm a bit bummed because I came on to announce that I have signed copies of THE HUNDRED THOUSAND KINGDOMS and THE BROKEN KINGDOMS by the wonderful NK Jemisin, to give away.  Saw Nora at the BSFA meeting last night and she was made of awesome.  I won't actually do the contest until I've got this glitch sorted out, though.

Hope everybody's doing well.  I am a bit behind with online-type stuff and this little nuisance doesn't help.  Will be back when I have a grip.

ETA comments to this one disabled because I'm not sure wtf is going on with my lj right now.

Ten years of women in science fiction

In the wake of the Women and the Clarke thread at Torque Control, Niall Harrison aka [info] coalescent   is reading and reviewing SF by women and invites others to do the same.  He also writes of an effort to counter the all-male Gollancz Future Classics promotion:

I think we should put together a corrective, an additional list of Future Classics by women. ...I therefore invite you all to email me your top ten sf novels by women from the last ten years (2001–2010). Again, science fiction, although I leave it up to your conscience to decide which, if any, books that excludes. And for this, I think, the books can have been published anywhere. I’ll collate all the votes, and announce an overall top ten in the same week as I post my reviews (and highlight which books haven’t been published in the UK).

He adds, And hey, if over the next few weeks you want to blog about your favourites – or send me a paragraph to post here – don’t let me stop you.

It's worth reading the whole post, because there are some lists and suggestions of places to look for titles.  Niall's week to blog about the novels he reads will be 6-10 December, so he needs the lists no later than 5 December.  That's lucky for me, because I've got some reading to do to even begin to make a list.  I haven't read very many books at all in the last ten years, and of those only a handful have been SF.  It's embarrassing, but I don't even know my own species very well these days.

The e-mail to send your lists is:  vector DOTeditors ATgmail DOT com
