On his way...

I’m winding down Van Alone (due September 22) and will soon be sending copies to those who’ve expressed interest in a pre-release read. Finishing a book is always exhausting, like breaking up with a lover but wanting to stay friends. You’ll always care but, at the same time, you can’t wait to see the back of them. This time even more so because, for the first time, my ‘hero’ is not likable and I hope readers will want to discover his story.

The main characters in all my books are hot and Van is no exception. You can’t ask me to lock myself away with someone for months on end and not get into him. But, this time, he’s despicable. Arrogant, manipulative, and cold, Van uses people for his own ends. We’ve all known someone like that. Magnetic yet insufferable, they draw us in against our better judgment.

But Van Alone is not only a character study and we watch as Van’s carefully constructed world spins out of control. Suddenly stripped of all his bearings, he finds himself playing a dangerous game with questionable people. Why? That’s the question the book sets out to answer in this rock-and-roll tale of Indiana Jones in Wonderland.

Forthcoming September 2022

My last novel, Pierre & Bill: A Love Story, was about too much love. My new one, Van Alone, is about not enough. This is my fifth book and I'm winding my way down a path that veers in and out of mystery. Jordi, Tony, and Beau are plot-driven stories with lovers and villains, while Pierre & Bill is a character-driven story where the danger is limited to everyday mortality. With Van Alone I'm trying to do both with a story about a damaged man whose quiet life comes undone by both crime and love. Still working on the cover - and the book!

Pierre & Bill - in the flesh

Denise just posted a great review of ‘Pierre & Bill, A Love Story’. I’m not one of those authors who lives for positive reviews. On no, not me. I write for the money :)

The beauty of Denise’s review is that it includes pics of the main characters. I love it! While Pierre would be a tad older, the similarities as to how I see them is amazing, especially Danny. When Hollywood calls, he’s Danny or I don’t sign.

Stiff...competition

'Beau’s Dilemma' has been nominated for an MM Member’s Choice Award in the category Best Action, Suspense & Adventure. Voting is open to all members.

The competition is stiff and if you’d like to give Beau a hand, he’ll be forever grateful. If you haven’t perused him yet and would like to, let me know and I'll set you two up. Beau's a fun date.

If you aren't an MM Romance member or even a fan, remember that both Beau and his creator are card-carrying homos.

Kimmer likes Pierre & Bill

Kimmer's Erotic Book Banter just posted a wonderful review of Pierre & Bill, A Love Story (out December 1, 2021). Yes, a wonderful review has to come with a few stars, but for me the most exciting aspect of this review is how it treats the story in such detail without divulging it. I think the story is strong, but as the reviewer suggests, it's the undercurrent (or undertow) where everything takes place.

Five stars for Pierre & Bill!

Pierre & Bill, a Love Story
By Patrick Doyle

Five stars
Review by Ulysses Deitz

How can a book have all the elements of a “classic” gay romance, and yet not be one? You’ll have to read Patrick Doyle’s “Pierre & Bill” to find out. It is familiar in its real-ness, and it resonated deeply with me.

Pierre and Bill are not a couple. They’re not father and son, either. They do, however, love each other and have lived together for a long time. Pierre is a retired construction worker, and Bill is a high-school art teacher, more than thirty years Pierre’s junior. I wanted to simply define their relationship as parent/child, but the author (and his characters) really don’t want that. Also, as we enter the story, set in Canada in the present day, Pierre and Bill’s relationship is undergoing a sea change.

Things get complicated in their cozy life when Pierre’s health is suddenly in question—and the Bill encounters a challenge at work that threatens the security he and Pierre have built together. Then, as if that wasn’t enough, two young men, both younger than Bill, enter their life and cause further emotional confusion. Danny and Liam are very different from each other, and the author portrays them with as much care and loving detail as he lavishes on Bill and Pierre.

While the plot is important—dealing with difficult issues and real-world truths—it really is the complex emotional interconnections among the four main characters that make the story so satisfying and relatable. No matter how much we want it to be, life is never simple. Love and loss, justice and injustice, acceptance and rejection: these are the things that Pierre and Bill have to deal with.

Pierre may be a stubborn old coot (he is, I note, exactly my age), but Bill is rather a whiny child at times. Bill is not flawless, and his flaws struck home as I read the story, which takes place entirely through his eyes. Ultimately this is a gentle book, about gentle men yearning for happiness and security. It’s nothing new, but somehow it all felt very different, thanks to the author’s deft handling of the narrative.

Pierre & Bill: A Love Story

I’m heading into the last stretch of a new book - ‘Pierre & Bill: A Love Story’. My earlier books are stories of gay men facing the mystery of love and crime. ‘Pierre & Bill’ explores the mystery of love, but there will always be a criminal in my books. When it’s ready, I’ll post it as something like this.

“Pierre and Bill have been together for nearly thirty years, ever since Bill was five. Thrown together by circumstances beyond their control, they stayed together despite the many attempts to tear them apart.

The world thought it wrong that a stranger should raise a child, especially when that stranger was gay. Especially, too, when the child also turns out to be gay. But Pierre and Bill would win that fight and go on to develop an indelible father/son bond.

Now many years later - Pierre is in his sixties and Bill in his thirties - they’re facing a different kind of crisis. Age, illness, and financial insecurity threaten their future. When Danny shows up their lives get even more complicated, but it’s Liam’s arrival that turns their world upside down. Liam comes with Ruthie, and he has a problem of his own.

Love takes center stage. Whether as parents, children, lovers, rivals or friends, everyone wants it, fears losing it, and struggles to make room for more.”

From GG's Scavola on Beau's Dilemma

"A GAY thriller, very well-written, where you really work alongside the actions of main character to figure out what's going on with the all the twists and turns and puzzling events. The characters are fleshed-out and likable and the sex is sexy. I highly recommend it especially for a nice summer beach read! "

Beau's Dilemma is out and proud!

My apologies if anyone's getting this twice. Even more so for the typo in the title. Imagine, an author misspelling his own book. Tolstoy, here I come!

'Beau's Dilemma' is now available - already one great review, below. As the reviewer notes, I've graduated to writing sex scenes, something I shied away from earlier. Don't know why. Writing about sex is like sex itself. Once you try it, there's no turning back.

'With “Beau’s Dilemma” Patrick Doyle steps outside the box and creates a precise, meticulous novel with secrets, clues and chaos. He also takes another step in some very steamy moments and still keeps this a very suspenseful novel. The plot never looses it’s direction, with fast paced action, corruption and violence."
