Get Different Staff Picks – Quotes they love

Get Different hits the shelves on September 21st! As the date approaches, we thought it’d be fun to share just a few of our staff’s favorite quotes from the book.

On being different:
What good is your offering if no one knows about it?

Our own fear of standing out is the number one reason why we struggle to get noticed. People lose the game of marketing because they play by the rules – rules that don’t even exist.

Marketing is not a game of hide and seek. It is a mission to be as obvious and noticeable as a lighthouse. Don’t hope to be found. Demand people see you. You’re the beacon of the best choice in the fog of mediocrity.

The wishy washy word of mouth strategy is no strategy at all. It’s putting your marketing efforts in the hands of your clients so they do it for you, at their whim.

Listen: You have something great. It’s made of your imagination, your sleepless nights, your sweat, and your determination. It’s a big deal, this thing. It’s the thing. They need this thing. The problem is, you built it, and despite what the movies promised, no one came. Maybe not even your mom. And few will ever come, until you get different.

Marketing the same way as everyone else is white noise.

On your responsibility:
You offer something people need, something a lot of people will love. Or at least something people would love, if they only knew about it.

The lack of marketing – good, effective, different marketing – is the driving reason for small business mediocrity and stunted growth.

On the risk:
The truth is, I wanted to get noticed without being noticed.I wanted to reap the reward of attention without the risk. What if people thought I was too out there, too goofy, too Jersey? I had settled for the dull comfort of being unnoticeable rather than taking the soul-shaking risk of being unignorable.

Want more? You have to wait until September 21st – but you can order a book now. Heck order multiple and gift them to your fellow entrepreneurs.

Get Different isn’t just some obvious pep talk about getting different. It’s a proven blueprint to position your business, service, or brand to get noticed, attract the best prospects, and convert those opportunities into sales.

Get the free, unignorable, resources HERE. The tools here will help you deploy all the techniques you will learn in the book.

Go to Immerse with Mike and experience Get Different with me as you read it. Videos included!

I cannot wait to see your marketing transform.

You’ve got this!
-Mike

Read to Lead – Mike’s Likes

My nose is in a book more than I write. It’s true. Because there’s no better way to broaden your mind, as well your business than reading books. I’m willing to bet you’ve derived at least one actionable item from every book you’ve read, even if it was a stinker.

One of the most common questions I receive from people is which book of mine they should read first. As tempting as it is to suggest the next book I’m launching, like, say, Get Different (cough, cough, pre-order, cough), I realize that every business and it’s needs are unique. Whether you’re just beginning your business or you’re a seasoned entrepreneur, there is a book out there for just about everything your business could possibly pertain to. There’s no one size fits all business book, and that can be overwhelming. The best way to know what business book to read next is to identify what your immediate, specific need is in your business. What are your goals? What are the pain points?

Finishing a book, especially for a business owner, can feel like a luxury sometimes. It’s incredibly hard to tune out the millions of distractions, let alone comprehend every word you’re trying to read. One book that has greatly improved how I process what I read is Read to Lead, by Jesse Wisnewski and Jeff Brown. I’ve never read a book like this. It guides you through the different ways we consume knowledge. This book will help you develop a deeper understanding of what you’re reading. Among all of the other positives, that deeper understanding means you will be able to relay that valuable information.

“Reading is the freedom that leads to all other freedoms. Read to Lead will inspire accelerating readership, growth, and entrepreneurship.” – Mark Victor Hansen, bestselling author and cocreator of the Chicken Soup for the Soul, One Minute Millionaire, and ASK! Series
“This book gives you the practical tips and techniques you need to get the most out of every book you choose, making reading extremely valuable and enjoyable.” – Michael Hyatt, New York Times bestselling author, founder of

Make time to read. You’ll never regret it!

Tips for Making Money in Educational Consulting – From a Profit First Professional

Ross Loveland, of Grow Green Profit Advisors, is a Profit First Professional and recently shared an article he worked on about making money as an educational consultant. Check it out to debunk some old ways of thinking and ramp up your consulting business.

*******
As an educator, your work is incredibly valuable. You do some of the most important work on the planet: teaching and molding the rising generation to successfully face life’s problems and to (hopefully) help make the world a better place.

And yet, too many educators, especially those in public education, are not rewarded for the work that they do. Educational consultants have the chance to change that for themselves, but it doesn’t happen automatically. It can also be extremely difficult to accept the mindset that making good money is acceptable and even desirable.

I met with several wonderful leaders in educational consulting to gather their thoughts on what it takes to be successful, and how to overcome the stigma that being “too” financially successfully is something to be avoided.

MIKE ANDERSON, founder of Leading Great Learning, leadinggreatlearning.com. He also has an awesome course for prospective education consultants, found here.

MONEY-MAKING TIP: Don’t undercharge. It’s way too easy to charge too little, especially when most consultants come from the public system. Be particularly careful about discounting your work. It’s not usually wise to offer a discount for 5 days, and more of a discount for 10 days. The reality of that is that you’re blocking off more and more days on your calendar where you’re making a lower rate. This can make you feel demotivated when another school district wants to hire you at your full rate but you no longer have availability.

“My rule of thumb is to have one standard set rate that I use for all of my local work. That daily rate is the same for one day or 25 days.” Having one set rate also frees you from thinking about money as much. You set the rate, don’t negotiate, and then focus on the work you love.

WHY IT’S OKAY: “We don’t need to be paupers in order to still be mission-driven. As long as we continue to do great work for kids, and great work for teachers, then I don’t think it needs to be antithetical to also be able to put more money into retirement or send your kid to college. You just need to be careful that the money doesn’t become the purpose.”

DR. KEVIN LEICHTMAN, co-founder of TLC Education, tlceducate.com. I also had the great pleasure of recording a podcast with him recently. Stay tuned for more on that!

MONEY-MAKING TIP: Have a business plan that includes a mission and a vision. This doesn’t need to be a 20- or 30-page document, like many templates online. The plan that Dr. Leichtman and his wife, Anala, created is only about a page long, though it took a lot of time and effort to boil it down to those essentials.

“The business plan should state, ‘This is what we’re good at, this is what we’re passionate about, this is what we want this business to function as and do, and this is how we’re going to make that happen.’”

The plan will guide you as you receive new opportunities and help you stay focused on your mission. It also helps with marketing and messaging and will make your branding consistent. Whether someone listens to your podcast, reads your book, or attends your training, they will feel the same unified purpose underlying each of them. They will know what to expect and feel comfortable exploring your other offerings.

WHY IT’S OKAY: “If you forget that you’re making an impact or that you’re bringing any value, it’s really easy to devalue yourself. In this industry, we tend to think it’s all about service and not about money, meanwhile our families struggle.”

But you need to understand that you ARE bringing tremendous value to your clients. Remember that you’re not selling packets or worksheets or even your time; those are just the tools. The value you’re bringing is a struggling student getting a new perspective and having that “aha” moment, or a burned out teacher becoming inspired again and taking that energy back to his/her entire classroom. That has real value to it.

VERNON WRIGHT, creator of shapethewrightvision.com. He also has a great, free audiobook, “10 Steps to Becoming a Gamechanger,” which you can find on the same site.

MONEY-MAKING TIP: Understand the principle of seed time and harvest time, or sowing and reaping. A farmer understands that if they do certain things now (plants seeds, cares for them, and allows time to pass), they can collect a harvest. This is a universal principle that applies everywhere, and certainly in educational consulting.

Many actions do not have an immediate reward. But if the seeds are good (you have a great service) and they’re placed in good soil (you’re in a market that needs that service), the harvest will come. The seed knows what to do! Recognize that it does take time. Keep talking to prospective clients, keep providing useful content, keep delivering a great product to your current clients – each of these is a seed in fertile ground.

When farmers plant their fields, they go out with a bag of seeds. Yet when they return to harvest, they go out with a wagon or a trailer, and perhaps fill a silo with all that they reap. And so it is in this space. Be consistent and take the right, small steps every day, and a great harvest will come.

WHY IT’S OKAY: Money isn’t the root of all evil. The love of money may be, but money itself is a tool. It can be used for evil, and it can also be used for good in incredible ways.

“Educators want to reach as many people as possible, but what they miss and don’t grasp at a deeper level is that in order to expand that reach, to reach as many people as possible, it takes money. What I would ask educators is this, ‘How much do you want to reach people on a wide scale?’”

We never put money before people; always people first. But money can allow us to fulfill our purpose on a larger scale and do more good in the world.

DANIEL KOFFLER, founder of New Frontiers Executive Function Coaching, nfil.net.

MONEY-MAKING TIP: Be mindful of your financial health. Early on at New Frontiers, they were giving a lot of services away. Their heart was in the right place, the team wanted to do the best job possible, but they were hurting the business and its ability to continue doing good into the future. The solution?

“What we’ve done over the last couple of years is to really focus our efforts around KPIs (key performance indicators) that allow us to drive business in a way that is meaningful to the bottom line.” Some examples include staff utilization, competitive analysis, sales strategies, and customer acquisition costs.

Make sure you don’t do great work with such a narrow focus that you no longer have a business to run anymore. Regularly reviewing your financial health, for example with KPIs, will allow your business to remain productive, profitable, and fulfilling its purpose long into the future.

WHY IT’S OKAY: In this field of educational consulting, your product is your knowledge and your experience, and you shouldn’t be giving that away. You spent a long time developing your skills and expertise (and likely your formal education wasn’t cheap, either!).

“My staff are professionals and very high quality people. I’m very comfortable arguing that they deserve to make a living. And I’m not ashamed of doing so either. As long as you believe in the value that you and your services bring, you should feel at ease charging what you’re worth.”

ROSS LOVELAND, founder of Grow Green Profit Advisors, growgreenprofits.com.

MONEY-MAKING TIP: Build a team of professionals around you. No one person knows the answers to everything. Surround yourself with experts, particularly those that specialize in areas you don’t understand or have zero interest in. They will lift you and your organization to new heights.

“One of the best decisions of my business career was hiring a CPA. She knows taxes better than I ever will. I can go to her with questions and she provides excellent advice. She saves me time and money, not to mention the stress and headaches I’d have if I tried to do it on my own.”

Other examples of wonderful people to include in your inner circle are bookkeepers, profit advisors, sales/marketing gurus, business coaches, and financial advisors. You understand where you are strong and where you need help. Seek out quality people who can fill in the gaps.

WHY IT’S OKAY: There’s a common myth that profits and purpose are mutually exclusive. It’s this idea that if you make a lot of money, you must be selfish and therefore taking from the world, not giving to it. And it’s certainly true that there are some rich, selfish people.

“In my experience, most of the time, people with more money give more. So when we’re talking about this myth that making too much money is wrong, I have to disagree. In fact, I believe the opposite is true: greater profits lead to greater purpose.”

Money, like many things in life, is a resource. You can use that resource to do good, to fulfill your purpose and to lift those around you. Hence, the name of our blog, “From Profits to Purpose.” The financial success, the money isn’t the purpose, but it can absolutely lead to and support the purpose.

These five tips will help you as you create your success as an educational consultant. Just as important, they will improve your mindset about money. But all of this is purely academic unless you take action! Implement at least one idea, share with others, and be intentional about the way your run your business and manage your money.

Outmarket Everyone Else

I felt invisible. I had launched my first business, a VAR, in 1996. Back then the popular three letter acronym for a managed service provider, was Value Added Reseller. We did basically the same thing MSPs do today, just with the technology of time. Netware 3.12 was hot and Token Ring was taking its final gasp as a new “cutting edge technology” called Ethernet took root.

The demand for networks was exploding. Every business wanted to connect to their PCs, their printers and the newest technology of all… the Internet. Opportunity abound. My company was in the right place at the right time. Or was it?

No matter how I marketed, no matter how many networking (as in professionals socializing) events I went to, I was struggling to grow. I would pick up clients here and there for sure, and referrals would trickle in. But I never seemed able to grow my leads, or my business, substantially.

At the same time I was operating my VAR, a company called Geek Squad started appearing in town. Between you and me, they were a joke. These folks would dress up like nerds. Black flood pants, white socks, narrow black ties and white shirts, and glasses taped in the middle. I get the gag. But come on!

It was no gag. Geek Squad went on to sell to Best Buy, becoming the technology service provider for the organization. Their company skyrocketed in size with over $42 billion in revenue in 2019. Mine? Not so much.

If you are familiar with Geek Squad, from a technical standpoint, you likely know that their service capability is far from remarkable. They surely have some capable folks, but I knew my business could run circles around them. And so could yours. But why, with my technical and service superiority, did they dominate client conversion while I fought for scraps? Because better is not better. Different is better.

Over the last ten years I have studied what makes marketing successful, and why most people fail. The reason is quite simple. Most people market like most people. Which by definition makes you invisible.

According to Forbes magazine, Americans are exposed to over 6,000 ads a day. Internet ads, mailers, networking events, billboards, promotional items, it goes on and on. The human brain has become very efficient at ignoring all of it. The technical term is called habituation. In short, anything that is perceived to be the same and of no value is ignored – fast.

You may notice this in your own behavior. When you have a stack of mail do you carefully open each one, read through each letter in detail, and follow the instructions? No, of course not. Our mind is really good at ignoring the junk (which is most of it) and sorting out the important stuff (the checks and the bills). But there is one type of mail that doesn’t get discarded, even if it is a marketing piece: anything unexpected. Receive an envelope that is the size of a car, and you just gotta open it. It’s different. Get an envelope with a set of keys clanking inside and we are curious what it is about.

It is clear that marketing succeeds when it is out of the ordinary. When it is unexpected. When something is different, our minds can’t instantly categorize it as more junk. So we investigate.

Different alone does not win the marketing game. The Geek Squad got noticed, for sure, because they were dressed like geeks. And my business was invisible, because I was dressed like every other “computer guy” in an ill fitting suit. But imagine if the Geek Squad dressed like clowns or sasquatch. That would get noticed, but would it get business? No. Different garners attention, and attraction retains it.

First, we need to present ourselves in a way that gets noticed. Then, to keep that attention, the messaging needs to serve the prospect. A geek is attractive to someone looking to get their computer fixed. Who better than a geek? Surely not a clown or sasquatch. So, while walking in like Bozo the Computer Guy will surely get noticed, it won’t get you business.

The final element is to direct the prospect to take the action you want. The Geek Squad crew were handing out business cards (yes, business cards were still popular in the mid 90s) left and right. On the card it said “Any time. Any place. 24 hour computer support task force.”, and the hotline to call. Easy and specific. Need a nerd, now? Call this 800 number.

The key to successful marketing is to do the exact thing no one else will do. Presenting your business as an industry leader simply means you are just another one in the industry. Don’t be the leader, be the differentiator. Be the one who defies the industry. When the collective competition is email marketing, do direct mail. When they do direct mail, send a piece that is as big as a car or dress up like a geek. Just don’t do what they do.

Market like no one else does, and you will have marketing success like no one else does. Different is better. Every. Single. Time.

Get different!

Mike’s Likes – Fiction for Entrepreneurs and Life of Pi, by Yann Martel

Business owners, you need an escape.

I read Life of Pi, by Yann Martel. And an escape it was. But first, I want to explain why reading fiction is crucial for the development of entrepreneurs and small business owners.

Running a business can be all encompassing at times. Ok, most times. You need a breather, and something to feed that soul of yours. When I want to escape, I read a good fiction book. Yup. I’m talking full I’m-outta-here time.

The entrepreneurial mind is constantly on. We are cruising top speed in that never ending journey for the next best idea or strategy to level up our business, or begin a new one. This is what makes us who we are. But dang. You have to come up for air sometimes. The work will always be there. And the beauty of taking a break, is that it will offer you an opportunity to clear some energy and gain a refreshed perspective. Put a pin in that spinning wheel and see what appears!

Entrepreneurs are often reluctant to read, and on the whole think they are too busy. If you are reading, you may feel you have to justify that time spent by reading a business book, then applying and “crushing it” in your everyday work life. Look, business books are my world, and the actionable takeaways are priceless. But that’s not a break, is it?

Reading fiction can be just as productive as reading a business book for us small business owners. Your brain is a muscle, and you need to work it! Think about it. If you only work your bicep the same way every day, what happens to your quadricep? Nada. It will just get all, well, flabby. When we open up new areas of thought, we are working out the grey matter in our noggins and letting our imaginations run wild.

Business owners reading fiction does not equate to “guilty pleasure”. You may think you’re slacking off if you pick up fiction. Not necessary!  If you find you need to quantify time spent, think of it this way – As you have likely noticed, I find all sorts of analogies that I can apply to my business. Working out, traveling, being in nature, and yup, reading fiction, have all taught me lessons that are universally applicable. I mean, I created a whole system around a huge pumpkin.

I digress. As an entrepreneur I think we all must overcome our fears from time to time, and I learned an unexpected and powerful lesson about fear when I read Life of Pi. Check out this excerpt from the book:

“I must say a word about fear. It is life’s only true opponent. Only fear can defeat life. It is a clever, treacherous adversary, how well I know. It has no decency, respects no law or convention, shows no mercy. It goes for your weakest spot, which it finds with unnerving ease. It begins in your mind, always … so you must fight hard to express it. You must fight hard to shine the light of words upon it. Because if you don’t, if your fear becomes a wordless darkness that you avoid, perhaps even manage to forget, you open yourself to further attacks of fear because you never truly fought the opponent who defeated you.” ― Yann Martel, Life of Pi

You never know what you will encounter in a good novel. What are you reading? I want to know!

And remember, there is always some truth in fiction.

Mike

Don’t Give Up On You

I’ll give you the punchline first. If I listened to people before writing my first book, I wouldn’t be where I am today. Second punchline – if you have a dream, go for it. Please.

“No one needs another accounting book.” That was the response I got from someone when I had my idea for Profit First. Apparently, they were wrong.

Here’s the thing, if I had listened to critics and naysayers, there are seven small business books that never would have been published. To date, Profit First alone has saved hundreds of thousands of businesses worldwide. I get emails from readers of all of my books explaining how they take profit, grow and pick only the best clients, and are able to automate their business. None of that would have come from me had I listened to the one or two people scrunching their noses at my big ideas.

If you have an idea or an offering that you know can help others in business or otherwise, it’s your duty to get it out there. Critics will always be around, but they’re not the doers, they won’t be the helpers.

You will.

Whatever you do, don’t give up on yourself. Go for your dreams.

Mike’s Likes – Books That Helped Shape My Business by Ryan Deiss and Michael Port

+

No matter what our philosophies or offerings are, we have one thing in common – we have to sell it.

Your customers want to know you see them. No one likes to feel processed. So, I show a sign. Ok, ok, it’s not neon or anything, but I like personalization. From gifting to sending a video response to a reader, to the books I write. Signs are a tool I use as a little extra insurance to let folks know I see them. The result of my little sign? Better engagement. And that’s where every sale begins. (You can learn more about that in my new book, Get Different, but I’ll digress from that shameless plug. For now.)

Someone I have followed for years to keep my finger on the latest in sales techniques is Ryan Deiss. In his book, The Invisible Selling Machine. In it he provides a practical roadmap so you can learn how to automate and perpetuate your sales process. Sound too good to be true? It’s not. Learn how to create email marketing that will generate leads and grow your business. Read The Invisible Selling Machine to understand how to use your email marketing correctly.

“This is what most marketers get wrong. They focus all their efforts on building email lists, and almost no effort on how they’re going to make money from that list once they have it.”

Ryan Deiss, Invisible Selling Machine

Sales isn’t just an email list though, right? Michael Port’s Steal The Show will help you speak so effectively, that your communication in and out of the business world is, well, out of this world. Port writes that every interaction you have, from a presentation, to an interview, to your marketing is a performance. Through the book you will learn how to not only improve your speaking and performance skills, but to convey your communication in the most effective and authentic way possible. You will consistently succeed in those high stakes situations, leading and negotiating – all while staying likeable. Yes please.

“Yet, I can almost hear you saying, “Well, I’m not really a performer and I’m certainly not an actor; in fact, I’m far from it. Actors love the spotlight and can’t wait to get onstage. I’m shy and I get visibly nervous when I have to speak in front of others.”

Well, I have good news for you. That’s fantastic. No, it’s better than that. It’s a “you-just-won-the-lottery” kind of fantastic. You’re exactly the person for whom I’ve written this book.”

Michael Port, Steal the Show: From Speeches to Job Interviews to Deal-Closing Pitches, How to Guarantee a Standing Ovation for All the Performances in Your Life

Making the sale is more than marketing data. You need to know how to have a strong marketing system in place, and how to deliver your ideas effectively. I know these books will help you. Because I’ve used them too!

Have you read either of these? Tell me how they helped you in your business in the comments.

Wishing you tremendous success,

-Mike

Mike’s Likes, Black Magic Design, Books by Kerry Patterson and Taki Moore

What’s your role in your business? Aside from creating systems and writing books to support them, I’m a keynote speaker. And, not to be Captain Obvious here, but, keynotes are down a bit in the last year or so. While they are ramping up, there are some virtual options. So I decided the best way to serve and upgrade my speaking engagements is to upgrade my video equipment.

Behold, a behind the scenes peek at my camera set up. I recently purchased the Blackmagic Design (ATEM mini). I can switch cameras to overhead, to the entire room, to my computer. Yes! My online presentations feel so much more seamless and I can communicate with an audience in a far more effective manner.

Speaking of communication, it’s never been more important. Technology continuously creates new ways for us to communicate, which is wonderful. However, many of us faced some changes after the pandemic both in business and personally. We have to be able to communicate effectively. When we communicate through text, voice memos, and social media, it can miss the mark. So much of what we say isn’t face to face and can lead to a tone deaf message.

For this reason, here are a couple more business books I love. Crucial Conversations, by Kerry Patterson, focuses on three key elements: high stakes, differing views and strong emotions. It’s the ABC’s for conversations, and can help you avoid common communication pitfalls in all arenas. No matter how evolved you are, we should always continue that evolution. And since no man is an island, we need the skill set to sustain our communication efforts. I have read, and have reread this book and apply the lessons at home and in business.

“As much as others may need to change, or we may want them to change, the only person we can continually inspire, prod, and shape—with any degree of success—is the person in the mirror.”― Kerry Patterson

Profit First, Fix This Next, The Pumpkin Plan, Clockwork and coming soon, Get Different, all have a coaching, advisory or guide aspect to them. One of many areas skilled communication comes into the equation is coaching. You cannot be an effective coach if you aren’t able to regulate a conversation. One of my favorite coaching books is Million Dollar Coach, by Taki Moore. This book will teach you that it’s not your mindset that needs to change, it’s your business model. Check it out and implement Taki’s systems to take your business from surviving to thriving. Taki’s been coaching business owners since 2004 and is one of the experts when it comes to converting sales. Read up to get your blueprint for your own success.

I hope these books serve you as they did me. It takes a village, people. Keep learning, growing, and make that impact through your business.

You’ve got this!

Mike’s Likes and Kids’ Books by Todd Herman and Adam Wallace (Read for a surprise!)

Tell me a fun fact about you in the comments. Me? I like cheap sunglasses. Because I like to break stuff. Ok, some stuff.

Summer is here! (Hence the sunglasses!) School is out and it’s the perfect time to create a reading list, not just for you, but for the kids in your life. So, I want to mix it up and share some kids books with you. “Why, Mike?” Glad you asked! For one, as an author, I believe in the power of a book. My wife and I started reading with our kids at a young age, and we loved to watch their imaginations grow. Our kids’ ideas and worlds expanded with each book. Reading with your child or giving books in my opinion, is one of the best gifts you can ever give. And it can make their future so bright, they’ll need shades.

To that end, surprise! I decided to start writing a children’s book myself (the first, based off of Profit First concepts, but for kids so we can empower them with cash management skills from the start!). Through my research, I found two books that I love and wanted to be sure I shared them with you.

How to Catch a Unicorn, by Adam Wallace, is engaging and entertaining for kids and adults alike. I love his fun, “how to” style of writing, that kids follow word for word, page by page. This is part of a series of how to catch books. So if your kids are into dinosaurs, mermaids or even leprechauns, you’re in luck. Check him out!

If you read the Wall Street best seller, The Alter Ego Effect, by Todd Herman, you likely wished you knew to follow his guidance way earlier in life. Luckily, you can provide empowerment for kids in your life through his children’s book, My Super Me. This is a wonderful, fun way for kids to learn how to become empowered through building avatars, and finding the hero who already lives inside you. The premise of My Super Me may just carry kids through some challenging times, and who can’t use a little more of that?

Keep reading to or with your kids. Even when they’re older, give them books. You never know what may be unlocked!

Read on!

-Mike

PS – My children’s book will be released around the holidays. Stay tuned!
