Useful emerging writers resources

These are the books and resources on writing I’ve found most useful in the past two years, when my focus has been on establishing a writing practice and structuring methodology:

Take off Your Pants by Libby Hawker

Useful for structuring and character development

This is probably the book I’ve found most useful for structure, so I’m putting it at the top. It helps me keep character at the core of my story, (something beat sheet methods sometimes leave out) and helps me figure out which s...

Writing a novel: Both marathon and relay race

Over the past 9 months, I’ve been in the Four Centres Emerging Writers Program. The program is designed to teach participants about publishing, and I have learned a lot about the publishing world. I polished my book to the point of...

Twice not shy, ‘Writing Naked’

I have a couple of flash fiction pieces published in the upcoming anthology ‘Twice Not Shy’ by local legends Night Parrot Press. My work in that anthology is different to a lot of things I’ve written before because it’s not speculative – the stories are based strongly on life and my onw experience. They both fell out of my time in Night Parrot Press’s flash fiction writer’s group, which temporarily existed during the earlier days of COVID-19.

It’s got me thinking of Jennifer Probst’s book ‘Wr...

WINNER of ‘KSP’s ‘Spooky stories’ competition 2020

A few weeks ago Shannon from KSP Writer’s Centre asked me to read my story at their ‘Spooky stories’ anthology launch. I knew I was being published, but I said to my boyfriend Ronan, ”I won’t win, my entry wasn’t that good.”

When I was on the zoom call I realised that only the top two finalists in each category were reading their stories. This surprised me, but I was still firmly convinced I wouldn’t win. When they announced second place and I realised I was the winner, Ronan said I looked l...
