Writing When You Hit A Wall
It's Spring! And while I was spring cleaning I came across a card from several years ago. As I read it I remembered why it was sent. I had been writing for six years at every vacation, nights, between court calls and after dinner. I had finished my first manuscript and was actively writing a second (RUNNING FROM THE DEVIL) which would end up being the book that would garner me an agent, a publishing contract, and two awards.…

Words That Need To Be Said Along With “Follow Your Passion”
I’ve been reading articles and watching TED talks about the advice “Follow Your Passion.” For many the advice “follow your passion” has been either deified as excellent or vilified as dangerous. And whether it’s ultimately excellent or dangerous is usually determined by the financial outcome. You follow your passion to become a writer and you starve: bad advice. In light of this week, I'm getting lots of emails from readers asking if the books need to be read in order. The answer is no. I wrote each one to "stand alone" on the assumption that a reader might discover one, but be unfamiliar with the others.…

Don’t Throw Water On The Fire
Those who know me or have read some of my earlier posts know that I am often annoyed by those who feel the need to explain to me or others why a life in the creative industry is not going to end well, either financially or emotionally. These people end up urging their children, my children, my friends, or random strangers who are contemplating such a life to take the safe route. These are the ones who say, “you’ll…

LOVE HISTORICALS? TRY ZEMINDAR: ABOUT INDIA’S SEPOY MUTINY OF 1857 (and a strong female character)
Don't you wonder why some books gain iconic status while others, equally as wonderful, don't? ZEMINDAR is one of those books. A sweeping historical epic that accurately portrays life in India at the time of the Sepoy Mutiny (1st Indian War of Independence) of 1857. If you thought our own Civil War was bloody, read about the residence at Lucknow when under siege. …
