Dads Can Experience Mental Health Issues After Childbirth, Too

'The Takeaway talks to Aymann Ismail, a staff writer at Slate, about an article he wrote called "The Good Dad," about his own recent experience with his new born baby. Through his new journey into fatherhood, Aymann discovered that a lot of his anxiety stemmed from his own internalization of masculinity and what it means to be a good dad.'
A Whiteness That's Only Skin Deep

'We use words related to color to describe different racial categories all the time — Black, white, brown. But how much of race and identity actually has to do with the color of your skin? What if what appears to be "whiteness" is only skin deep? Code Switch shares stories from people of color with albinism whose experiences challenge what many people think they know about race.'

How Should the Media Be Covering Democracy At Risk

'During his four years in office, Donald Trump dominated political news coverage. So much of what we saw was “unprecedented," and that includes his furious and sometimes dangerous war with the media itself. For its part, the media has done a good job at calling out Trump’s “big lie” and the actions it fueled, including the insurrection. Journalists have led major investigations looking into Jan. 6th, and they’ve also repeatedly fact checked politicians' lies. At the same time, many in the media have failed to communicate how much our democracy is under threat right now. News organizations aren’t centering that story, instead opting to cover the political theater of Washington. For more on this, The Takeaway spoke to Margaret Sullivan, media columnist at the Washington Post, and Lewis Raven Wallace, author of The View from Somewhere and the host of the podcast of the same name.'
'Soul Train' and the Business of Black Joy

Imagine a Future with No Police

'Vox's Fabiola Cineas talks with author, lawyer, and organizer Derecka Purnell about her recent book Becoming Abolitionists. They discuss Derecka's journey to defending the idea of police abolition, and what that position really entails. They explore questions about the historical and social role of policing in society, how to imagine a future where we radically rethink our system of criminal justice, and how we can acknowledge and incorporate current data about crime—while still rethinking our inherited assumptions about police.'

Kaepernick Publishing to Release ahmoud Abdul-Rauf’s Autobiography: 'In the Blink of an Eye'

NEW YORK, N.Y. – January 18, 2022 –Kaepernick Publishing is proud to announce that it will be publishing NBA legend Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf’s autobiography on October 18, 2022. Written with Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Nick Chiles, In the Blink of an Eye: An Autobiography will capture the attention of sports fans and general audiences alike.
Marked by staggering vulnerability, Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf—whose given name was Chris Jackson before converting to Islam and changing it in 1991—recounts the twists, turns, trials, and triumphs of his life. He is perhaps most well-known for being exiled from the NBA for praying—instead of standing and saluting the flag during the playing of “The Star-Spangled Banner” before games throughout the 1995–96 season. Abdul-Rauf’s protest sent shockwaves through the league that can still be felt today.
With wit and candor, Abdul-Rauf tells the story of how he rose to the top of his game—only to have his career taken away in the blink of an eye when he stood up for his principles. He also recounts his experiences living with Tourette syndrome, committing his life to the Islamic faith, and growing up estranged from his father. Through evocative passages that place the reader in the heat of the moment as well as poignant portraits of the important people in his life, In the Blink of an Eye: An Autobiography will capture the attention of readers from all walks of life. This book is a must-read for anyone who has faced down adversity by standing up for the integrity of their own life, path, and identity.
“I’m deeply honored to work in collaboration with Kaepernick Publishing,” said Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf. “The timing couldn’t be more important than it is now for us to join forces in controlling our own narratives with the hope that my story, among many more, will continue to inspire future generations.”
Colin Kaepernick, founder of Kaepernick Publishing, remarked, “We at Kaepernick Publishing are humbled to bring Mahmoud Abdul-Rauf’s powerful story to life. Stories like Mahmoud’s are rarely given the respect and prominence they deserve by mainstream media, and we are here to change this. Our goal at Kaepernick Publishing is to amplify the courageous work of people like Mahmoud and to provide a platform for inspirational voices to tell their stories with truth, authenticity, and integrity.”

Afropop Worldwide | Off the Beaten Track: Burkina Faso, Malawi, and Beyond

'This episode of Afropop Worldwide ventures into corners of Africa we hear from rarely, guided by adventurous field recordists and crate diggers. The Zomba Prison Project is a set of recordings by inmates at a maximum security prison in Malawi, currently the poorest nation on earth. The project’s debut CD was nominated for a Grammy Award. Here, we speak with the producer, Ian Brennan, and hear tracks from a new volume of soulful, even heartbreaking, songs from the prison. Then, we go back to the 1960s and ‘70s in the city of Bobo-Dioulasso in Burkina Faso (then Upper Volta) to sample a gorgeous set of newly revealed recordings by Volta Jazz, Dafra Star, Les Imbattables Leopards and more. We hear from Florent Mazzoleni, the author and intrepid vinyl collector behind the new box set, Bobo Yéyé: Belle Époque in Upper Volta.'
