Becky Chaffee grew up in northern California. She resides in Knoxville, Tennessee where she and her husband, Duane, have raised their 2 children and various cats. Becky loves to hike and cook. When Becky's 85 year old mother moved in, her mother wanted to take art class. So Becky did her daughterly duty and took her, and begrudgingly joined the class too. Becky didn't want to be in that class. She wouldn't pick up the pencil or brush without the teacher telling her what to do! One day, her nephew asked her to make a painting, so she actually did some art by herself at home. It turned out so great that Becky made a bunch more similar music paintings and turned them into note cards. When she brought the paintings and cards to class, the class asked when, where and how did she do these (by herself). Many people in the class wanted to purchase her cards and the teacher wanted to purchase one of her originals! She immediately got her cards into the local Hallmark and into the local Visitor Center, University Museum store... Just a few years later, her music lesson note cards are in places like the San Francisco Symphony gift shop! Art has become Becky's soul.

She has put the lesson cards together for her first children's book to inspire children to pick up their musical instrument for fun, not just for their lessons. With the humorous pictures, it also gives pointers about practicing. Many music teachers are crazy about the book and want one in their studio. There is no other book of the sort. In the first month she has been contacted by a teacher to come talk to her music students. She is working on four more books along this line.

Becky has a master's degree in Civil Engineering, but (after working in the field for 13 years) opted to stay home to be a chauffeur to her children for 20 years. They were both at the tops of their classes and needed extra supplemental activities from birth!

Becky is an amateur musician, and has listened to about 20 years of music lessons as a result of taking her two children to classical and jazz violin and piano lessons and then herself to flute lessons. Her daughter is Deputy Program Director of Reading Partners, Los Angeles, CA, a non-profit program helping inner-city children with reading. Her son is in Boulder, Colorado working on his physics PhD. Jenna currently enjoys playing her violin in a trio, and Dalton strums his ukulele between his work and coaching and playing ultimate frisbee. They both have recently gifted Mom with music recordings of themselves making music with their significant other.

Becky loves the idea of inspiring children. She uses brightly colored folk art sprinkled with humor in both illustrations and captions, and turns her art into educational note cards available on her web site. Sometimes she gets side-tracked with purely humor. Because she loves requests, her paintings and note card subjects have expanded from the large music lesson collection to science and reading concepts (as her "lunch box education" card series) , community, East Tennessee, cats and dogs, wild animals, yoga, weddings and holidays...

The science and reading concept cards come naturally as she has two engineering degrees from UC Berkeley and Cornell University and her daughter is a "reading specialist".

Prior to the card and print creations, she created music purses. The purses are in the shape of musical instruments, starting with a little violin, calling it a "Violette", then adding grand piano and guitars.

Thru her company, Becky raises funds for music education. She has managed and donated to fundraisers for a number of music causes. Every year she hosts an Annual Youth Composition Competition for ages 10 thru 18 and has distributed $1,000s in funds and prizes to youth. This year, 2020, her 7th year of the competition. ...more
