Review of "I'm not your chihuahua / I'm not your chihuahua"

"If poetry could be self-help, then this is the best book I recommend." --Edelmira Muro, Teacher and Educational Psychologist, Mexico.
“I am not your Chihuahua / Yo no soy tu Chihuahua,” the second collection of poetry from Chicano author Tezozomoc. Is very different from his first book, “Gashes, Poems and pain from the halls of injustice”, published by Floricanto Press; that work was a collection of his best pieces from the last 30 years of work.
“I am not your Chihuahua”, published by Amoxcalco Books, his second poetry collection, has special elements. First, it is a bilingual work, code switched (English and Spanish), and second part is in Spanish. This is very unique in poetry collections.
The is well themed across all seven sections via the elevation of the Mexican “albur” (double meaning), an attractive narrative due to the mixed elements; Mexican “albur” (on a philosophical level) bilingual (extraordinarily difficult due to its translation into Spanish). The theme is uniformly distributed in each essay (the jocularity of the theme) achieved across 7 essays with an invitation for reflection, humor and picturesque narrative that makes you enjoy the whole book, end to end.
This work invited me to carry out a deep reflection, (where personally), I became an agent of change. I know that it is a somewhat complicated task but not impossible. I was led through a process of changes at a personal level. I engaged in a journey of psychological introspection that has yet to be completed.
Personally, as a reader, educator, educational psychologist for over 23 years; I have never encountered any poetry like this.
Important elements that I recommend from this extraordinary work would be:
1.- The philosophical elevation that the author makes with the Mexican vulgar “albur” (double entendre).
2.- Psychological introspection, aimed at not romanticizing lost identities, such as the absence of autonomy and belonging (where I am convinced was the watershed to entice me to be an agent of change)
3.- The role of the Mexican dog, as an animal to universalize the human condition.
A poetry collection that exceeded my expectations. It surprised me with its leading elements. The most important thing, and what is inevitably rescued, is what the author achieves with his narrative, especially for me, a subliminal invitation to make a reflection, beyond myth and ideologies, but to also become agents of change. I wish there was a greater distribution of this poetry collection.
In the essay, “Puttering Pup,” I was impressed by, “This puppy urinates on your diversity and lack of critical terrain. We are not sniffing out a Malintzin-like lineage. We have been sown by 25 million not by a specular drop of Iberian DNA.”, a statement to help us abandon false myths and ideologies.
In the essay, “Mythical Mammals”, he helped me establish a personal sense of authenticity, “The mythical mammal articulates a genuine longing to move away from the quantum vacuum of alienation. The mythical mammal that evokes wishes and manifests a spiritual relationship with the earth, the world, and rematriates humanity.”
I highly recommend this work. It comes with a deceptive structure that you will enjoy. Humorous Mexican “albur” taken to a philosophical level, easy to digest and will keep you hooked from beginning to end. This is, for me, and for all those readers who want to give themselves the opportunity to become agents of change; with a sense of belonging and being.
