Longest Book in the World?
Weighing approximately 17 kilograms and measuring 80 centimetres long, artist Ilan Manouach has made the longest book in the world. He bound together 21,450 pages of the popular Japanese manga One Piece to create a sculpture that explores the expanded digital production belt. In doing so, he has created what many believe to be the longest book everso long, in fact, that it might be physically impossible to read.
One Piece, which started serialisation twenty-five years ago, was written and illustrated by Eiichiro Oda. Published by Shueisha in the shnen manga anthology Weekly Shnen Jump since July 22nd, 1997. In that time, it has become one of the most popular entertainment franchises in the world. Spanning numerous movies, games and long-running anime, One Piece is truly a juggernaut of the entertainment industry. It follows the adventures of a pirate, Monkey D. Luffy and his swashbuckling crew in their search for the ultimate treasure, the One Piece.
The incredible story filled with heartwarming, gut-wrenching moments has impacted so many fans across the world. The unique premise and art style make it stand out from the rest. With strong world-building and a colourful cast of characters, it is no wonder why it has stood the test of time.

With an estimated value of over 500 million copies sold, becoming one of only two works in history to obtain that achievementthe other being Harry Potter. In the process, One Piece outsold many best-selling mangas and comic book titles, such as Batman and Dragon Ball. It is easy to see why Ilan Manouach chose this series to base his sculpture on. The sculpture named ONEPIECE was developed as an object of pure speculation. And although it is not “official”, the sculpture has received a lot of praise from fans and critics alike. Fans are eagerly awaiting One Piece’s “final saga” that will bring an end to the 25-year-old journey and cement it as one of the greatest anime/manga of all time.
However, what about the longest-readable book? That title belongs to Marienbad My Love by Mark Leach. The longest single book with 17,800,000 words and 10,710 pages. Mark Leach wrote what can be considered the longest readable book in the world ever released. Set in the 1960s, the book follows a Christ-haunted journalist-turned-filmmaker. He attempts to persuade a married woman from his past to help him produce a science-fiction-themed pastiche to the 1960s French New Wave classic. If he can get her to remember him. This storys plot invokes Christian themes and portrays events in everyday filmmaking. Mark populated the book with cinematic illusions and delights in secret conspiracies.

The conceptual art project, ONEPIECE, sold out within days of its launch. Ilan Manouach made 50 signed and numbered copies of the sculpture available for 1,900 ($1,893) each. So, he successfully highlighted how comics are beginning to exist as commodities. What book series would you like to see him do next?

Ready Player One Review
Title: Ready Player One
Author: Ernest Cline
Published: 16th of August 2011 Ballantine Books
Format: Hardcover 384 pages
“That was when I realized, as terrifying and painful as reality can be, it’s also the only place where you can find true happiness. Because reality is real.”
from Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
A YA science fiction novel set in a dystopia in 2045 by New York Times bestselling author Ernest Cline. Ready Player One was mentioned in my most recent “What Should I Read Next?” post, it is a title I’ve personally been interested to read after seeing the movie. I finally finished it and I was pleasantly surprised, keep reading to find out why!
(adsbygoogle = window.adsbygoogle || []).push({});SYNOPSISA world at stake. A quest for the ultimate prize. Are you ready?
In the year 2045, reality is an ugly place. The only time Wade Watts really feels alive is when he’s jacked into the OASIS, a vast virtual world where most of humanity spends their days.
When the eccentric creator of the OASIS dies, he leaves behind a series of fiendish puzzles, based on his obsession with the pop culture of decades past. Whoever is first to solve them will inherit his vast fortune–and control of the OASIS itself.
Then Wade cracks the first clue. Suddenly he’s beset by rivals who’ll kill to take this prize. The race is on–and the only way to survive is to win.
MY REVIEWThe idea behind Ready Player One is an amazing one. Set in a dystopia in 2045, it follows protagonist Wade Watts on his quest for the Ultimate Prize in a worldwide virtual reality game. This unique concept spoke volumes to my technologically curious side. I am very interested in Virtual Reality (VR) and Augmented Reality (AR) technology so to find a story that had imagined a world in which they were fully realised was very alluring.
However, after watching the movie, I was disappointed to see the virtual reality aspects were glossed over. Although it showcased some unique ideas and technology, it was nowhere near as much as I was hoping for. Not to say the movie wasn’t enjoyable, it was certainly an entertaining movie to watch. But it just left me wanting more. More about the world and what it might actually be like. Luckily for me, the book answered my hopes.
This could have been the desire of the filmmaker and Ernest Cline to boost sales and I must say it worked like a charm! As book readers, we know movies are often forced to leave out or change details in service of making a more digestible story for the big screen. Perfectly understandable. However, this leads to most movies being preferred much less than their book counterparts. Therefore, I became infatuated with the idea of reading the book and observing how it compares to the movie.
World BuildingI had heard about the nostalgia, the pop culture references and the entertaining quest. But what I wasn’t prepared for was to completely fall in love with the world of Ready Player One.
Ready player one had a fantastic introduction. I think it served to perfectly set the scene for the world and the quest. As I read on, I became so captivated with the world-building. This semi-dystopian future that seems so real it was almost scary. Everything he spoke about wasn’t far off from our world and played to make it feel grounded and realistic. The “Stacks” that Wade lives in are very reminiscent of the Nakagin Capsule Tower in Tokyo. Whether this was by design or not, it made the world being described feel all the more tangible.

From the plausible energy crisis to the food shortages, the world-building of Ready Player One blew me away. The virtual reality system seemed like a very likely future. The way it was used for different services such as schooling reminds me that Facebook/ Meta recently debuted the , a virtual reality office space. This isn’t far off from the virtual reality classroom depicted in Ready Player One. The different features that the school had such as the “mute” button and the “no PvP” all felt like real features that would be added to such a device. The copy and pasted building that I know for a fact would be done to save time for the programmers. Ready Player One is truly a fantasy world tinged with realism.
The portrayal of the living condition on Earth and the way the OASIS was presented and operated were thought out and executed well. It was futuristic enough to be compelling, but also realistic enough to be plausible.
Pop-Culture ReferencesAlthough I’m not personally from the generation that would appreciate all the pop culture references, I would say I understood the majority of them as more references were pretty surface level. This made it mildly fun to see but didn’t go past that. But it also made it easy to ignore the references I didn’t understand. I think this might have been intentional by the author to avoid alienating the audience that might not get the references.
My critique is there were some unnecessary ramblings of the main character but I do understand that is part of his character embodying the “I’m 14 and this is deep” energy. Some details definitely could have gone unmentioned as it got uncomfortable and tedious to read at some points.
MY THOUGHTS AND OPINIONIt was a captivating story, strategically peering into a popular past while at the same time set in an unsettling, dystopian future. With some really interesting ideas like games mimicking movies, ‘The Stacks’, VR education and so much more.
I read Ready Player One to see how it compared to the movie and I was not disappointed. The story was engaging and the ideas interesting. With a multitude of puzzles and quests, Ready Player One is worth a read. If you enjoyed the movie at all, I would recommend picking up the book. I think it was a fun twist on the dystopian future that most people would enjoy.
Once again huge shoutout to Melissa Hawkes for providing me with the copy of Ready Player One that I used to make this review possible.

Should you listen to Music while Writing?
Music is special. It can be inspiring, soul-crushing and so much more. With its vast variety, it is able to set the mood and tone for writers to properly convey their feelings to their readers. The colourful lyrics and entrancing melody can be great sources of inspiration. The post “Why I listen to Music While Reading” showed how music can complement the content for the reader and the same can be said for the writer. A lot of people say “write in silence because music distracts you”. I disagree.
Writing While ListeningSimilar preconceptions plague writing while listening to music. Music is seen as something that silences the whispers of your thoughts as you write. It seemingly staggers progress and detracts from the writing process. It is seen as a distraction. On the contrary, I believe music serves to enhance the author’s ability to convey emotions. Music is theorised to activate multiple areas of the brain when we listen to it. This allows writers to channel their emotions into the words being written, providing a deep concentration from which inspired work arises.
Background music improves focus on writing by providing motivation and improving the author’s mood. During long writing sessions, music can aid endurance and stifle burnout. The stimulation music provides is a refreshing change of pace to the silence we are often told is better.
Music that matches the scene that you are writing can be a great source of motivation and help stimulate creativity. The beat perfectly matches the tone of the scene and the words seem to write themselves as you get into a flow. The ambient, modern electronic track’s magical feel is a perfect fit while writing an adventure scene. Whether it’s exploring in a dungeon, travelling across the world or solving a mystery, the symphonic music sets the perfect atmosphere for the writer.
Why I listen to music while writingI’m a huge fan of listening to music while I write. Some of my best scenes were written while listening to music. It helps energise me while writing and enhances the experience. I listen to music that compliments the scene that I am writing. I find it helps me get into the right mood and allows for my best work to be done.
The melodic beats help the author add emotion to what is being written. Non-lyrical music like Lo-fi beats and classical music also works well when writing. They do not break concentration when writing and their calming instrumentals have a soothing effect, enabling the right mindset to read to be achieved.
Should you listen to music while writing?Music is a medium that can easily evoke emotions. It is a language of feelings that can give people chills and thrills. We all have our own preferences, but music is a gift that should be used to its fullest potential. Of course, there are times music can be distracting and should be switched off to allow your thoughts to be heard. It really does depend on the mood and the content being consumed and written. I recommend attempting writing while listening to music, it can be an elating experience when the right blend of the music for the scene is found.

Shadow of the Fox by Julie Kagawa
Title: Shadow of the Fox
Author: Julie Kagawa
Published: 1st of November 2018 – HQ Young Adult
Format: Digital – 240 pages
“It is very hard to be human, little fox. Even the humans themselves don’t do a great job of it.”
from Shadow of the Fox by Julie Kagawa
A YA fantasy novel based on Japanese Mythology from New York Times bestselling author Julie Kagawa. I mentioned Shadow of the Fox in my most recent “What Will I Be Reading” post, it was highly recommended by many reviewers such as Iasmina Edina. I finally finished it and I was pleasantly surprised, keep reading to find out more!
SYNOPSISOne thousand years ago, the great Kami Dragon was summoned to grant a single terrible wish—and the land of Iwagoto was plunged into an age of darkness and chaos.
Now, for whoever holds the Scroll of a Thousand Prayers, a new wish will be granted. A new age is about to dawn.
Raised by monks in the isolated Silent Winds temple, Yumeko has trained all her life to hide her yokai nature. Half kitsune, half human, her skill with illusion is matched only by her penchant for mischief. Until the day her home is burned to the ground, her adoptive family is brutally slain and she is forced to flee for her life with the temple’s greatest treasure—one part of the ancient scroll.
There are many who would claim the dragon’s wish for their own. Kage Tatsumi, a mysterious samurai of the Shadow Clan, is one such hunter, under orders to retrieve the scroll…at any cost. Fate brings Kage and Yumeko together. With a promise to lead him to the scroll, an uneasy alliance is formed, offering Yumeko her best hope for survival. But he seeks what she has hidden away, and her deception could ultimately tear them both apart.
With an army of demons at her heels and the unlikeliest of allies at her side, Yumeko’s secrets are more than a matter of life or death. They are the key to the fate of the world itself.
MY REVIEWThis is the first book in Julie Kagawa’s Trilogy Shadow of The Fox. It is a fantasy series set in ancient Japan, we follow the two main characters Yumeko and Tatsumi on their journey across the land to the last safe haven.
After finishing Shadow of the Fox, I can say it deserves the praise it gets. The writing was excellent and the story was easy to follow with some impactful moments. I enjoyed Yumeko’s playful and optimistic personality and her interactions with the stoic but protective Tatsumi. Their dynamic was fun to read as Tatsumi slowly became more open.
CharactersCredit to the author for taking the time to develop their relationship. Instead of forcing a quick change in personality in Tatsumi for the sake of the plot. Tatsumi struggles to open up and even when you feel him getting better, he forces his emotions back down. This was a great decision hinged in reality as change does not happen overnight. It’s a constant struggle as we go back and forth between acceptance and reality. This back and forth is also presented with the struggle he had with the demon trapped within him. The duality of Tatsumi was a lot of fun to read.
Although Yumeko didn’t change much during this book, I can tell her character development is going to come as the trilogy continues. However, Yumeko has the gift for changing those around her. She is a strong female lead who helps those around her to grow and evolve. From the stray ronin Okame to the noble Taiyo Daisuke, each person that meets Yumeko goes through a slight change as they journey together.
SettingThe setting of the Shadow of The Fox was my favourite part. The world is littered with interesting lore and locations. It is clear Julie Kagawa put a lot of thought into the world-building of her trilogy. I can’t wait to explore the world more in the next books. The monsters are varied and creative providing a lot of tense moments as the reader is unsure if the protagonists will make it out alive. Each monster is given a compelling reason for why they are fighting which serves to elevate each encounter.
My one “critic” would be the main villain of the story, a very imposing and mysterious figure. I believe is the only antagonist not given a fleshed out reason for fighting our main cast but I think this is by design. Not being given proper motivation gives her an air of unpredictability. The build-up to reveal her motivation may take the whole trilogy but I’m here for it. She can command immense power that even in the world established, is extraordinary. Her backstory is sure to be a compelling one that I’m excited to see.
MY THOUGHTS AND OPINIONI picked up Shadow of The Fox to get back into reading some Fantasy novels and I was not disappointed. The story was engaging and the writing superb. With a diverse cast of characters that played well off each other and an intriguing world and premise, Shadow of the Fox is worth a read.
It was my first Japanese Fantasy novel and I thoroughly enjoyed it. It reads like an anime with well-rounded characters and interesting settings. I adore Anime, Manga and Japanese mythology so this book was right up my alley. I would highly recommend @juliekagawaauthor‘s novel Shadow of The Fox for every Fantasy and anime enthusiast. Can’t wait to pick up the rest of the trilogy.
