Eldritch Girl S03 Trailer

Yes, it’s that time again… My new novel is coming out soon, and that means so is S03 of the podcast, so you can listen along for free as you read.
This is primarily an accessibility thing for me: I can’t afford to work with professional voice actors, but that would be my dream. I am also not selling enough to make that happen, realistically, so that’s how indie life goes. But also, while I can narrate my books myself, I am conscious that not everyone can access printed copies. Disabilities and neurodivergence aside, even my books are prohibitively expensive in other currencies and with exchange rates. I don’t really want to charge people when I’m not doing recording my novel professionally, and for me the podcast is A LOT of fun.
So here we are: Season 03 of Eldritch Girl is coming soon, and I hope that you enjoy the bonus content as much if not more than the main episodes! Dip in and out as you please. I’ll be posting transcripts here as usual, and on Ko-Fi too, so you can tip me for the work I put into the interviews and transcription if you’ve a mind, or if you are really enjoying the story but you don’t want to buy a copy. The tip jar is always open and does not judge.
I had fan art sent to me last year and it absolutely made my life. If you want to, absolutely please do send me anything, I would be so honoured. I don’t bite.
Here’s the trailer!
Transcript
Three possible futures, two versions of the apocalypse, one chance to save the world.
Wes Porter, a severely depressed, insanity inducing playboy, is detoxing from hallucinogens that have unlocked his ability to see versions of potential futures, and he’s just foreseen two ways the world could end.
Normally, Wes would leave the hero bullshit to somebody else, but he can’t abdicate responsibility this time, not when both those apocalypses might be his fault.
With some prompting from a mythological barred prophet who may or may not be real, and a lot of assistance from his monster eating baby sister who desperately wants to move out of his apartment, and their soothsayer cousin who has his own demons to fight, Wes attempts to save his world…
But have his poor decisions doomed them all?
The Day We Ate Grandad is the third book in the Pagham-on-Sea series.
It is a dysfunctional family cosmic horror novel for fans of What We Do In The Shadows, the Magnus Archives and the Call of Cthulhu, with themes of bereavement and grief, generational trauma and a dash of Roman and Welsh mythology.
The cover design is by Rebecca Kenney, Interior illustrations by Tom Brown, it is edited by Johannes Punkt, and the theme tune is by Gemma Cartmell.
I’m really excited to share this one with you guys.
Thank you ever so much for sticking with the podcast so far, if you’ve just joined us, I hope you’ve enjoyed season one and season two.
If you haven’t heard those yet, they’re available for free, just go back and listen to the previous two seasons.
Just like season one and season two, season three is going to have a lot of bonus episodes.
I’m really excited about the interviews we’ve got lined up.
We have interviews with Paula D. Ashe, author of We Are Here to Hurt Each Other, which is very cool.
We’ve got a special interview with a filmmaker, Lucy Rose, talking about gothic filmmaking and depicting working class characters in historical fiction, particularly in gothic pieces.
So I’m really excited about that as well.
We’ve got lots of folklore discussions, lots of toxic family, we’ve got lots of toxic relationships, all the juicy good stuff with my guests, and obviously quite a lot of body horror.
Do look out for Suzan Palumbo’s collection Skin Thief.
I’ve got an interview with Suzan who’s being published with Neon Hemlock Press, and her collection Skin Thief is coming out in October.
So more about that later, and there’s a whole host of other people as well.
Just yeah, super exciting.
Do listen and I will catch up with you all again at the end of April when season three hopefully will air.
And that will coincide with the release of the Day We Ate Granddad.
So watch the space, check out the pre-order links when those are up, and grab your copy and read along.
See you again at the end of April.
Bye now…

#AmReading ~ MY SAY IN THE MATTER
This charity indie anthology is finally released!
My Say in the Matter is a pro-bodily autonomy anthology featuring social horror and spec fic with horror elements. It was put together for charity in wake of the Roe v Wade ruling in the United States, but the contributors (including the artists) are international.
Filled with poetry, short stories, flash fiction, and art by creators both previously published and not, My Say in the Matter is a speculative fiction anthology brimming with rage, sorrow, and joy-filled pieces. All final sales are going to Abortion Funds (abortionfunds.org).
Buy on AmazonREVIEW: Full disclosure: I have stories in this anthology! But! I love the anthology as a whole SO MUCH! It’s full of rage and grief and hope and righteous fury and sometimes you just NEED that. Need to feel like there is a whole world of people who also feel stuck, powerless, angry, sad, fed up, and that when we all come together, like in this book, we are so much stronger for it.
Ceilidh Newbury (she/they), one of the contributors to the anthology, is an Australian speculative fiction writer living on Peerapper land in lutruwita (Tasmania). She is a fierce advocate for and creator of safe queer spaces, especially for young people. They enjoy big mugs of tea, singing to their cats and can be found screaming about books on Twitter @ceilidh_newbury.

I’ve been allowed to get some screenshots of the interior as well, which looks great. The formatter/editor is Ezra Arndt, and they are available for commissions! So if you want your novel/novella/short to be formatted like this (note that the art for this book was by a different artist in this case, Therese, @/warickaart on Twitter), you can commission Ezra via their Ko-Fi. Commissions are open.
Note that they do NOT do graphic novels.

#AmWriting Update: Eldritch Girls Just Want To Have Fun
Sasha and Tosh by @/warickaart – ThereseYou may remember that I’m co-writing a splatterpunk horrormance, and the eagle-eyed among you will have noticed that THIRTEENTH has the following in its frontmatter:
Chapter 3 cameo appearances in the snuff film scene are
related to the spin-off ELDRITCH GIRLS JUST
WANT TO HAVE FUN, co-written with Nita Pan.
Tosh Haraldson is the original character of Nita Pan.http://www.nitapanwrites.com
http://www.patreon.com/nitapanwrites
@NitaPanWrites on Twitter and Instagram
Note that Nita Pan has rebranded to Ezra Arndt, for several reasons, but has been published under Nita Pan in the anthology FROM ASHES TO MAGIC, where their story, a prose poem, is entitled ‘Life and Death’.
They have edited and published a story, ‘The Field Devours’ in THE UNCANNY AND THE DEAD anthology under the name Ezra Arndt, and funded a successful Kickstarter project, MY SAY IN THE MATTER, a charity anthology for Abortion Funds.
I have an interview on my podcast with them here.
Here’s an extract from my novel THIRTEENTH mentioning Sasha and Tosh; in this extract, Wes has placed a bet on when Sasha’s victim would expire, and thanks to some hallucinogens that unlock his ability to see the future, he wins. He hasn’t quite worked out that this is what the drugs do, but this scene is instrumental in him finding this out. He’s already high, and has been drinking champagne, so this POV section is from that fractured viewpoint.
At fifteen minutes and exactly twenty-eight seconds, the heart monitor beeped in warning and the man’s vitals no longer registered.
Wes crowed, did a complimentary line off the table, started on the water, and ordered a coffee.
His sisters fawned over him, the sulky Yank with eyeliner stumbled up to flirt but stopped when he realised Wes was Sasha’s cousin, another bottle of champagne popped near his ear, and Wes exulted in sheer relief and adrenaline.
…
Sasha, resplendent in a fishnet body stocking and blood-spattered platform shoes, performed a flirty burlesque dance with the tools of her trade while the next victim was wheeled in, conscious and screaming.
Fucking hell, Sash. We used to dress up and play in Wonderland together, remember? Those were the days.
Wes concentrated on sobering up, watching the clock. There was no way he’d be right a second time.
The girl was declared dead twenty-two minutes and fifty-three seconds in. Bang on.
Fuuuuck.
Wes asked for chamomile tea. He tapped his foot against the table leg until Lucy kicked him, patience expired.
The third victim was wheeled in, the last one for this set.
…
After some erotic shenanigans with a pair of bolt cutters, the reappearance of the dental drill and a final
flourish – a jigsaw – the unwilling ‘volunteer’ was sawn in half. Blood spatter coated the two-way mirror, obscuring the view.
Sasha by @/carolinejamhour
You can grab THIRTEENTH on its own in eBook or Paperback, or as a duet eBook with THE CROWS, but the flavour of Sasha’s scene gives you an idea for the tone of the book and Wes’s POV sections.
THIRTEENTH is set c.2019, while Sasha’s spinoff story, ELDRITCH GIRLS JUST WANT TO HAVE FUN, is set c.2016, so some three years earlier.
Eldritch Girls is in rewrite stages, currently 80K and almost complete.
I have blogged about the co-writing process here. The temporary cover is below, just to give you a rough idea of the vibe!

Premise: An eldritch snuff film star who believes murder is performance art falls for a sado-masochistic devolving hitman working for her gangster uncle, despite their relationship being out-of-bounds.
Setting: Brighton, England (with flashbacks/refs to Chicago, IL, USA)
Structure: Dual POV, his/hers, following/subverting a romance novel format. The male POV is in US English, the female POV is in British English.
MCs: Bisexual allo(?) guy (USA), greyromantic allosexual/hypersexual het-ish girl (UK). Both are villains.
Side Characters: Gay [British] guy running the tech side of the snuff film business in “love” triangle with MCs (love is a loose term here); eldritch gangster and his family of abominations; snuff film producer; runaway sister of male MC; rescue cat belonging to female MC.
Background Characters: Eldritch family members; detective ex-boyfriend of male MC [Chicago-based]; ex-boss of male MC in Chicago; various people the female MC sleeps with/kills; wife of runaway sister and best friend of runaway sister.
Warnings/Content Notes: Extreme horror scenes including a lot of gore, graphic violence inc castration, strong/graphic language (obviously), stalking, abuse of privacy, toxic familial and romantic relationships, incestuous sibling, homicidal rescue cat (who doesn’t die and is not hurt at all), devolving character arcs (“I can make him worse <3”), coerced acid trip in a church leading to blasphemous use of the Eucharist, religious trauma, homophobic family & related trauma in a US context, kinky sex and masturbation scenes inc knife play and erotic asphyxiation, dub con, no redemption arcs, alcohol and drug use/abuse, and lots of body horror.

#AmReading ~ Woe To Those Who Dwell On Earth by John Lynch

3.5 stars rounded to 4 stars – this was a mixed bag for me as it was my first ever foray into Extreme Horror/military splatterpunk and I think the stories that weren’t for me will definitely be up other peoples’ alleys!
Read it if:
You like military fiction, specifically Marine Corps context, culture and characters, from active service members to veterans dealing with associated mental health issues and traumaYou’re okay with some pretty gnarly body horror in the form of amputation, castration, creature feature gore, monster attacks, war zones, and a good mix of sex and violence – I found that mix fairly enjoyable!
You enjoy being grossed out (I was getting some The Slob lite vibes from Cock-Meat Sandwich), but you also want the pay-off of a few laughs and a bonkers Christmas-themed gorefest (The Tree Farm), and some feisty femme fatales (Bow Saw, The Newly Weds)
You really like it when arseholes get theirs (I found The Newly Weds especially satisfying)
You want a bonus extract from The Warrior’s Retreat included in this collection!

New Ko-Fi Post: Yelen & Yelena

New post on Ko-Fi for all supporters – anyone who has bought something from my shop (over £1.99) or tipped me in the last 30 days, as well as all Ko-Fi members, can access this.
This is the first chapter of the 0draft: it’s just something I’m playing with. It’s about 14K now, I don’t know if I’ll actually finish it or if I’ll do anything with it beyond the 0 Draft, but we’ll see.
It’s the aromantic/allosexual beauty and the beast story, but the curse was never broken.
JANE EYRE X BEAUTY AND THE BEAST
***
cws: death, dying elderly relative, preparing a corpse, tetraphilia (explicitly NOT bestiality)

#AmReading ~ My Sister, The Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite

My Sister, the Serial Killer by Oyinkan Braithwaite
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I really enjoyed this. It’s a fast-paced read and the tension between the characters keeps pulling you through the story! I started it for book club and then ADHD happened and I forgot all about it for a few months, very glad I picked it up again and this time just devoured it. I love the exploration of family and sibling rivalry and loyalty, but also the different motivations for remaining loyal to someone with whom you have a difficult and complex relationship. There was enough backstory to fill in the blanks, and to infer a lot of the motives that the narrator had and didn’t explicitly talk about, and I loved the way it left things open and didn’t sacrifice the pacing for info dumps or introspection.
Not that it lacked any of that – the whole book is quiet, contained, and the action in it is mostly off-page, since the narrator is the one with the routine and quiet personal life. That just makes the gap between the sisters more intense and adds to the sense of difference between them.
Read this if:
– you like fast, light-toned reads about darker subject matter
– you’re ok to read books that deal with domestic abuse (physical) towards wife and children, the punishment for which is hinted at
– you like unreliable narrators, and stories told in a mix of longer and shorter sections that feed smoothly into the whole picture like a jigsaw puzzle, so you can see the whole shape if you read between the lines as well as the lines themselves
– you want a reflective, tense story about siblings and the nature of twisted sibling relationships, disappointed/thwarted/unrequited love, and the complex adulthood pain of being eclipsed and disbelieved simply by not being the ‘pretty sister’, rather than an action-packed gorefest or police procedural (it’s neither of these)

#AmReading ~ Vagabonds! by Eloghosa Osunde

Vagabonds! by Eloghosa Osunde
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
READING CHALLENGE 2023: Vagabonds! by Eloghosa Osunde (my first read of the challenge, running from 26 Dec 2022 to 25 Dec 2023)
Absolutely stunning anthology novel, a patchwork of queer love and pain, blending the spiritual world with the material world in seamless whirlpools of deeply intimate narratives. This book broke me a few times and then had such a triumphant ending, so hopeful, where ‘dead’ and ‘alive’ ceased to be meaningful categories (they never really were through the whole book, to be fair), and so do concepts of materiality and illusion, and a lot of other categories that break down completely. I really enjoyed the rollercoaster this took me on, and I’m left with a lot of powerful impressions of the characters and concepts expressed in their stories.
It deals with a lot of heavy topics, from political corruption to domestic violence, rape and murder, a dash of coerced/accidental cannibalism, possession (the devil has a few perspective chapters), surviving in a transphobic and homophobic society where your existence is illegal, disappearances, drugs/alcohol use/abuse.
Read it if:
• you want a genre-mash book with dark social themes, Paranormal spirit world layered and interwoven onto the material one, brimming with queer lives and their survival on the margins of modern Lagos
• religious and non-religious characters coming to terms with their stances on faith and its loss as they accept their identities, loves and losses
• different kinds of queer love and relationships, mostly sapphic, with sex workers, age gaps, tragedy, bisexuality, asexuality spectrum, fluidity, loss, triumph, and everything in between
• an anthology novel full of different voices, from the spirits of the city to the dead to the living all linked by place and the layers of their lives
• you don’t mind graphic scenes of female pleasure, kink and subversive, transgressive sex but told in very lyrical descriptive prose that flows like poetry (there are drug induced letters too, they are meant to be incoherent and expressive).

AMA ~ Character Edition
Follow the link <https://ko-fi.com/s/811fa7d3b0> to get this bundle for £6.00 in my sale: 01 Dec 2022-06 Jan 2023Q1: What are everyone’s favorite comfort meals?
A1: This one is weirdly the same for all of them: beef casserole.
The reason it’s the same is because it was Beverley’s speciality (and not *always* beef), and she’d make it for her favourite family members. So if Gran made you casserole, or you came over to find there was casserole for dinner/tea, you knew she was pleased with you, or you were in favour somehow. It was also mind-bendingly delicious.
Carrie has casserole when she goes over for tea, and that’s her first proper homecooked hot meal in months. She later learns how to cook it, and the others then get it from her on request, so it is then un-weaponised as a meal and becomes one with positive associations, that they can just have whenever they want it. Since they all know the context of the original meal, which is unspoken between them but just a Thing they understand from their family dynamic, it’s The Meal that they sort of re-appropriate/reclaim for their own.
Q2: Give me a fact about ricky that you’ve always wanted to give me but haven’t told me yet? feed me specifically
A2: Originally – and I don’t know if this is canon or not – Ricky actually lost his virginity to Sasha Shaw who collected all the cousins born in 1990 (same year as she was). They were 15, he was wasted and doesn’t really remember. It lasted less than 2mins. It happened the day he caught Wes and Layla at Aunty Em’s house, and was probably in response to that on some level, and a total waste of time for him, which is another reason why he doesn’t ever think about it or have any feelings about it whatsoever.
Q3a: Tell us about songs that various characters would not listen to most of the time except for when they are feeling a certain kind of masochistic.
A3a: Carrie wouldn’t listen to Both Sides Now by Joni Mitchell unless she was feeling like she really needed to cry.
Ricky wouldn’t put the radio on at all unless he was exceptionally lonely and needed some sound.
Wes only listens to angry emo rock when he’s incredibly pissed off/certain kind of depressed and needs to sike himself up for something: then it’s usually Fall Out Boy, MCR etc.
Katy is pretty easy about what she listens to, but she hates Summertime Sadness and Boys of Summer equally, and wouldn’t listen to them unless she wanted to torture her soul.
Q3b: If they could, what instruments would everyone play?
A3b: Carrie would play piano (always wanted to, never learned, but the house had a music room with a piano forte, and it remembers). Ricky – not sure. He whistles bird calls canonically so maybe the flute, but I think he’d like to play something with strings that requires dexterity, maybe the violin.
Wes – electric guitar. Katy: drums.
Q3c: And to keep running with the music theme, if everyone were to be in a band, who would do what and what would the band name be?
A3c: Something along the lines of Gods & Monsters, or Young Gods & Old Monsters?? It would be alt/emo/glam rock, ironically for Wes in canon. Something like that. Maybe a cross between The Struts and My Chemical Romance.
In this AU, Wes would be the frontman, lead singer/guitarist. Katy on drums, Ricky would be versatile and be the band member who can pick up any instrument and play it really well. If he’s musical in this AU, then instruments would be his hyperfixation. I think Carrie would actually be a roadie, a PA, or part of the team in a backstage way, and that’s how she and Ricky would meet and get together. They may have another band member, but unsure!
This would be a very “Rock Star Romance” type narrative but potentially told through interviews and memoir extracts, with the band on tour promoting a new album, with episodic dramas like Carrie rescuing Ricky from various self-destructive behaviours and situations, keeping Wes from going totally off the rails, and making sure Katy doesn’t get arrested and attends her anger management therapy sessions. She would definitely have slept with Wes multiple times in this AU but it wouldn’t be anything serious – FWB I think – but her and Ricky would be the solid partnership by the end.
The AU novel would be the same name as their band, I’m leaning to YGOM, and I think it would read a lot like a rock star autobiography or a bio compiled by a superfan in the industry/someone writing about their father and his life for Reasons. Ricky would still be ace, but I think would feel a lot of pressure to “overcome” his sex aversion which would lead to him being very self-destructive until he learned to be comfortable in himself, and possibly with a kid he didn’t know he had until later. I think, though, it would turn out to be Wes’s kid, not his, and that would be a fairly dramatic but typical episode that underlines the narrative arc peppered with a lot of sex, drugs and rock’n’roll. Everything, ironically, that Ricky says he doesn’t do in THE CROWS.
Gerald’s place in the narrative would be taken by his guitar, which would be a character in the story. I think that Ricky writes the songs, and Wes has a lot of input, but Ricky’s got that creative spark and is a gifted lyricist in particular. Some of his scenes alone with his guitar would have a Ricky/Gerald dynamic, I think, in terms of it being a mask to his deep loneliness and dissatisfaction with the lifestyle he’s got, but he doesn’t know how to change it.
I’m not sure what Fairwood would be in this narrative, but leaning towards the guitar merging Gerald/Fairwood for narrative purposes, but it would be more metaphorical. I think Ricky would definitely have a “dream home” he wants to buy and live in with Carrie, and that’s a ruined manor in the countryside that he wants to do up and have as his project outside of the studio life.
