Ryan Reynolds Helps Peloton Ad Actress Escape the Backlash in Hilarious Ad for His Gin (Video)
One of the worst things that can happen to a working actor or actress is to seemingly hit the jackpot by landing a national ad campaign, only for the ad they star in to become a laughing stock — or worse.
Such was the unfortunate outcome for an actress who appeared in a holiday ad for a Peloton exercise bike that sparked a huge backlash. Luckily, on Friday the actress received a Christmas miracle of sorts courtesy of “Deadpool” star Ryan Reynolds, who cast her in a hilarious ad for his Aviation Gin brand that gives her some much-needed respite from the cultural sh-uh, snowstorm she inadvertently stumbled into.
If you’re just catching up, the Peloton ad in question focuses on a woman who receives one of the company’s bikes from her husband as a Christmas present, then documents the next year of her life using it via selfie videos. At the end, she and her partner sit down on the couch to view her year, and then she thanks him for changing her life. The spot premiered in early November, but after being noticed over the Thanksgiving holiday was harshly criticized as sexist and sizeist — the backlash was so severe it caused the company’s stock to drop 13%. Ouch.
While the actress, whose name has not been made public, wasn’t personally blamed for the ad, she was still the face of what turned out to be the most hated commercial of 2019. Skip ahead to the Aviation Gin ad, which begins with a closeup on the actress as she clearly seems to be working through some stress.
Then the camera pulls back, and we see she’s in a cafe with two very concerned friends, staring at a glass of gin. “This gin is really smooth,” she remarks. “We can get you another one?” asks one friend. “You’re safe here,” says the other. The actress raises a toast “to new beginnings,” then proceeds to drink her glass dry.
“There you go,” says one friend. “It’s gonna be a fun night,” says the other, who slides her own glass over. And yeah, we feel it girl. 100%.
Watch the clip above. And God bless us, everyone.

Marvin Gaye’s Family Accuses Pharrell Williams of Perjuring Himself During 2015 ‘Blurred Lines’ Trial
Marvin Gaye’s family has accused Pharrell Williams of perjuring himself in court during the 2015 copyright trial for “Blurred Lines.”
In a motion filed on Friday in California, Gaye’s family has taken issue with a November GQ interview Williams did with the producer Rick Rubin. During their conversation, Williams discussed his music-making process and the idea behind trying to elicit certain feelings for listeners through songs.
“For the most part, what we always try to do was reverse engineer the songs that did something to us emotionally and figure out where the mechanism is in there and, as I said to you before, try to figure out if we can build a building that doesn’t look the same but makes you feel the same way,” Williams said. “I did that in ‘Blurred Lines’ and got myself in trouble.”

But for the Gaye family, Williams’s comments seemingly contradicted his deposition during the copyright trial, where the producer and Robin Thicke were ordered to pay $5.3 million for infringing on the copyright of Gaye’s 1977 song “Got to Give It Up.”
According to court transcripts from the 2015 trial, Williams said during his deposition, “I did not go in the studio with the intention of making anything to feel like — or to sound like Marvin Gaye.”
The motion claims that Williams’s new comments from the GQ interview indicate that the producer perjured himself in court. The Gaye family is asking that these new revelations be taken into consideration by the court so that the family can be compensated for “attorneys’ fees and costs,” amounting to about $3.5 million that was originally denied to them.

“Williams’s behavior seems akin to the entitled conduct of those taking part in the college admissions scandal. Like others who are not celebrities, those who do in fact wield the power of celebrity should not be permitted to do or say whatever they want without repercussions,” the motion states.
Representatives for Williams did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
But during his GQ interview, Williams was laudatory toward Gaye and said that the copyright trial “hurt” him.
“This was a freak situation that was meant to humble me, to teach me a lesson. And I think that lesson was just be very clear on what my intentions are and to just not assume that everyone understands the difference between rayon and silk,” Williams told Rubin. “I made rayon, [Marvin Gaye] made silk.”

Amazon to Lease New Office Space in New York City Even Without Huge Subsidies (Report)
Amazon will lease a massive Manhattan office space without taking any financial incentives from the city or state of New York, the Wall Street Journal reported Friday.
The e-commerce giant has signed a new lease for 335,000 square feet in the new Hudson Yards neighborhood. The office will employ 1,500+ workers.
The move comes less than a year after the company canceled plans to open a new headquarters in Queens, after local and state politicians, including Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, opposed a $3 billion package of tax and financial incentives offered by NYC mayor Bill de Blasio and Gov. Andrew Cuomo. Amazon claimed that facility would have employed 25,000+ workers.

In February when Amazon canceled its Queens project, it explained the decision in a post to the company’s official blog. The company has yet to issue a new blog about the lease, and representatives did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment.
After the announcement, Ocasio-Cortez tweeted, “Won’t you look at that: Amazon is coming to NYC anyway – *without* requiring the public to finance shady deals, helipad handouts for Jeff Bezos, & corporate giveaways.”
“Maybe the Trump admin should focus more on cutting public assistance to billionaires instead of poor families,” she added, referring to steep cuts to the food stamps program the administration proposed this week.

‘Aladdin’ Spinoff Movie in the Works With Billy Magnussen for Disney+
Make way for Prince…Anders? A spinoff film based on Disney’s live-action remake of “Aladdin” is headed to Disney+, and Billy Magnussen, who played Prince Anders in the remake, will star in the project, an individual with knowledge of the project told TheWrap.
Magnussen was one of the smarmy, wealthy princes who visits Agrabah to try and win Princess Jasmine’s (Naomi Scott) heart, and though his role was small, the rising star proved to be a scene-stealer in the film.
Jordan Dunn and Michael Kvamme are attached to write the script for the untitled film that’s considered in early development at Disney+. Magnussen would reprise his role in the film, though the movie is not intended to be a sequel to “Aladdin.”

Dan Lin and Jonathan Eirich, who produced the “Aladdin” remake,” are attached as producers via their Rideback banner, and Rideback’s Ryan Halprin will executive produce. Magnussen also approached the producers with an idea for the film and was involved with meeting with potential writers.
The “Aladdin” remake grossed over $1 billion worldwide for Disney since its release in May.
Magnussen will next be seen in “No Time to Die,” the 25th James Bond movie, as well as the prequel film to “The Sopranos,” “The Many Saints of Newark.” He’s represented by WME and Anonymous Content. Dunn and Kvamme are represented by Verve.
THR first reported the news of the spinoff film.

‘The Boys': Homelander Is Really Bloody (and Probably Still a Jerk) in First Season 2 Teaser (Video)
It looks like “f— supes” will very much still be in effect when “The Boys” returns next year, judging from the first Season 2 teaser anyway. Amazon unveiled the footage Friday for attendees at Comic Con Experience Brazil, and you can see it — and a very, very bloody Homelander — for yourself at the top of the page right now.
The clip begins with a silent shot of Homelander (Antony Starr) descending to the ground with a blank, freaked out look on his face — and also blood, a ton of blood. We see what appears to be the beginning of a face off with Kimiko (Karen Fukuhara) and the rest of The Boys, before things transition to a sizzle reel of various scenes from the upcoming season. Yes there’s plenty of Superheroes acting like celebrity douchebags, and also a surprisingly huge amount of blood. Like, really, a lot.
On hand to debut the footage for CCXP fans were Fukuhara and Starr, along with their co-stars Jessie T. Usher (A-Train) and Erin Moriarty (Starlight). Things got off to an awkward start when a technical malfunction interrupted the opening sizzle reel, but after a couple of seconds and a replay of the reel, things got back on track. Beginning with a gonzo entrance by Starr, who came out on stage holding what looked like a giant joint expelling copious smoke over the crowd — and his costars.
The panel was a more conventional affair of course, as the actors talked about their experiences in Season 1, and dropped a few non-spoilery hints as to what we can expect for season 2. One big takeaway: things are only getting gorier for our heroes and the terrible people with superpowers they’re up against.
“We have a lot more blood coming, so get ready,” Fukuhara said at one point. “Blood. Lots and lots of Blood,” Starr said later, adding that Season 2 will be “really f—ing wild. I can’t tell you what, but it is some of the weirdest things I have ever done and I can’t wait for you guys to see.” OK!
Usher meanwhile teased that in Season 2, “we learn the why” of some of the show’s crazier elements, while Moriarty said her disillusioned good girl Starlight “crosses over to the dark side. Though, Moriarty clarified, “she doesn’t lose her core desire to make the world a better place.”
We hope so, because (Spoiler) things were left unambiguously messed up at the end of season 1, most notably with the big reveal that Billy Butcher’s wife is still alive and, apparently, the mother of Homelander’s superpowered son.
The rest of us will have to wait some time to find out for ourselves, as “The Boys” returns at some point later in 2020. Along with Starr, Moriartiy, Usher and Fukuhara, it stars Karl Urban (Billy Butcher), Jack Quaid (Hughie), Laz Alonso (Mother’s Milk), Chace Crawford (The Deep), Tomer Capon (Frenchie), Dominique McElligott (Queen Maeve), and Nathan Mitchell (Black Noir).
As previously announced, Aya Cash has joined Season 2 in the role of Stormfront.

‘A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood’ Writers on What’s Fact and Fiction in Mr Rogers Movie
A version of this story about “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood” first appeared in the Actors/Directors/Screenwriters issue of TheWrap’s Oscar magazine.
“It’s a delicate dance that you do with your subjects,” said Micah Fitzerman-Blue, one of the two writers of “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” the film based on the friendship between children’s TV icon Fred Rogers (Tom Hanks) and a cynical journalist based on Esquire writer Tom Junod (Matthew Rhys). To get the rights to Rogers’ life and his work as the host of “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood,” he and Noah Harpster spent years working with the Rogers estate — whose head, Bill Eisner, initially told them, “I’m happy to meet with you, but you should know that there will never, ever be a Mr. Rogers movie.”
Over the years, though, Eisner came to trust the writers and eventually granted them access to Rogers’ extensive archives and to his widow, Joanne Rogers. “We listened to her stories, and a lot of them ended up in the movie,” Harpster said. “She really only had one demand, and that was that we not treat Fred as a saint.”
Also Read: 'A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood' Film Review: Tom Hanks' Mr. Rogers Film Is a Sweet Miracle
But their relationship to the film’s other main subject was different. “Noah and I had read Tom Junod’s wonderful (1998) piece in Esquire, and deep in our research at the Fred Rogers archives we found a box with 200 letters and emails between Fred and Tom that extended up until Fred died in 2003,” Fitzerman-Blue said. “That became the emotional spine of our movie. And then what you have to do as a screenwriter is to condense and cajole a life experience into the narrative confines required to make a satisfying movie.”
They wrote a draft and sent it to Junod, who asked them to change the character’s name because of the differences between his and the character’s life stories. Fitzerman-Blue and Harpster, who admitted they exaggerated the degree of conflict between the writer character and his father and based other material on their own experiences as new fathers, renamed the character Lloyd Vogel.
“It was only after Tom saw the movie,” Fitzerman-Blue said, “that he realized the much deeper ways in which he and the Lloyd Vogel character are so similar, which is what we were trying to achieve from the outset.”
But the other main character, they admit, was their top priority. “Getting Fred right was the biggest challenge of our job as screenwriters,” Harpster said.
Then again, they were never trying to be strictly accurate — that much is obvious as soon as the film begins and we see that the entire story is being framed as an episode of “Mr. Rogers’ Neighborhood.”
“We always wanted to frame the movie as an episode of the show for grown-ups,” Fitzerman-Blue said. “And by so doing, it gave us certain creative license to play with the form, to add surreal components, to use miniatures. And it allowed us to do what we wanted the movie to accomplish, which wasn’t to give our audience the traditional three-act biopic but to give them the experience of spending real time with Fred Rogers.”

Elon Musk Wins ‘Pedo Guy’ Defamation Lawsuit
Elon Musk was found not guilty of defaming a British rescue diver he had called a “pedo guy” on Twitter, a jury in Los Angeles ruled on Friday afternoon.
“My faith in humanity is restored,” Musk told courthouse reporters shortly afterwards.
Musk, who runs both Space X and Tesla Inc., was sued in Sept. 2018 by Vernon Unsworth, who played an instrumental role in saving 13 members of a Thai soccer club trapped in an underwater cave earlier in the year.

During the ordeal, Musk offered a backup plan to rescue the team involving a mini-submarine — a plan that ultimately went unused in the successful rescue mission.
Unsworth, during an interview with CNN, dismissed Musk’s backup idea for how to save the soccer team as a “PR stunt,” adding Musk could “stick his submarine where it hurts.”
Musk then lashed out at Unsworth on Twitter, implying he was a pedophile by calling him “pedo guy.” He apologized for the comment, saying it was “spoken in anger,” before later calling Unsworth a “child rapist” in an email to BuzzFeed News. Unsworth sued him soon afterwards, saying in his initial court filing Musk had tweeted “false and heinous accusations” against him.
Unsworth and his attorney, L. Lin Wood, were seeking damages of $190 million from Musk, breaking down as $5 million for actual damages, $35 million for assumed damages, and $150 million for punitive damages.

Musk “dropped a nuclear bomb on Vernon Unsworth” when he sent his tweet, Wood said during his closing argument, according to CNBC. Wood argued Musk, who he dubbed a “billionaire bully,” had wrecked Unsworth’s life with his tweet.
Alex Spiro, Musk’s lead attorney, argued “pedo guy” was not meant as a factual statement, but simply as a harsh barb. Musk’s team argued “pedo guy” was another way of calling Unsworth a “creepy old guy,” per CNBC.
His attorney’s added Unsworth had failed to prove Musk’s comments had caused actual damages. Instead, he was merely looking for a cash grab. Spiro characterized Unsworth’s argument to the jury as: “I’ve been horribly damaged. Pay me lots of money.”
The jurors ended up siding with Musk and his attorneys.

Nancy Pelosi Shades Sinclair After Reporter’s ‘Really Disgusting’ Question: ‘Is That a News Source?’
House Speaker Nancy Pelosi addressed a viral run-in with a Sinclair reporter earlier in the day at a Thursday night town hall, asking if the company is even a “news source.”
“Was that a reporter? Is that what reporters do?” she asked during the CNN event.
During her weekly press conference earlier Thursday, Pelosi announced the House would be moving forward on drafting articles of impeachment against President Trump. A Sinclair journalist, James Rosen, asked her if she hated Trump, which she said was “really disgusting.” She warned that reporter not to “mess” with her.

Town hall moderator Jake Tapper told the California Democrat that Rosen was a reporter for Sinclair, and she asked, “Is that a news source?”
After the town hall, a Sinclair spokesperson gave this statement to CNN: “We have reviewed the incident and based on the video, this was clearly not meant to be an inflammatory question and, further, this gave Speaker Pelosi the opportunity to clarify her own views, something that only strengthens positive dialogue.”

In her announcement that the House is moving forward on impeachment, Pelosi said, “Our democracy is what is at stake. The president leaves us no choice but to act, because he is trying to corrupt, once again, the election for his own benefit.”
“The facts are uncontested: The president abused his power for his own political benefit,” she said. The House Intelligence Committee and Judiciary Committee have heard testimony for weeks as the probe into Trump has continued.
