‘For Sama’ Is Named Top Doc at IDA Documentary Awards

“For Sama,” Waad al-Kateab’s wrenching story of raising a young daughter in war-torn Syria, has been named the best nonfiction film of 2019 at the International Documentary Association’s 35th annual IDA Documentary Awards, which were handed out on Saturday night on the Paramount Pictures lot in Los Angeles.

Al-Kateab, who directed “For Sama” with Edward Watts, also received the IDA Awards Courage Under Fire Award at the ceremony. Last week, the film also won the top award at the British Independent Film Awards, a rarity for a documentary.

Steven Bognar and Julie Reichert received the Best Director Award, the first time the IDA has handed out that particular prize, for their look at the culture clash when a Chinese company took over an American auto glass factory in Ohio in “American Factory.”

Two films about notable musicians also won awards. “Homecoming: A Film by Beyoncé,” which chronicled the star’s 2018 Coachella performance and was directed by Beyoncé and Ed Burke, won in the Best Music Documentary category, while Dan Reed’s explosive two-part Michael Jackson documentary, “Leaving Neverland,” won the Best Multi-Part Documentary award.

Carol Dysinger’s “Learning to Skateboard in a Warzone (If You’re a Girl)” won the award for best short documentary.

“Dokumania” was named the best curated series, “Abstract: The Art of Design” the best episodic series, and “A Moment in Mexico” the best short-form series.

Over the last 20 years, the IDA Awards winner has gone on to be nominated for the Academy Award for Best Documentary Feature 13 times. The same film has won both awards five times in that stretch.

‘SNL': Paul Rudd, Jimmy Fallon and James Corden Bully Alec Baldwin’s Trump in Cold Open (Video)

Alec Baldwin made his fourth Season 45 appearance as Donald Trump on “SNL” this week, but he was far from the only celebrity cameo in the show’s latest cold open.

In a sketch that took on, as usual, one of this week’s biggest political stories — you know, the one where several world leaders were caught on camera making fun of Trump at a NATO conference — Paul Rudd showed up as French prime minister Emmanuel Macron, along with Jimmy Fallon as Canadian prime minister Justin Trudeau and James Corden as British prime minister Boris Johnson.

The sketch began with narration that acknowledge the real-life happenings but then claimed that the video we saw was nothing compared with what went on later that day in the NATO cafeteria.

From there we got basically the high school sitcom version of this public drama, which saw Rudd, Fallon and Corden sit at the “cool kids’ table” and not allow Baldwin’s Trump to sit with them even though they had an open seat.

— Saturday Night Live – SNL (@nbcsnl) December 8, 2019

To illustrate the sort of comedy “SNL” was doing in this sketch, it had Corden put an “IMPEACH ME” sign on Trump’s back, and then Fallon told Trump, “I heard you can’t be impeached if your hand is bigger than your face.”

The cool trio start making plans for a party at Buckingham Palace, though Corden’s Johnson is not sure he’s allowed to do that since the Queen lives there. When Trump overhears them he tries to get in on it, but the cool kids respond by inviting German chancellor Angela Merkel, played by “SNL” cast member Kate McKinnon, to sit with them instead of Trump.

Then, after inviting Merkel to the party, Fallon mentioned to her that Obama will probably come as well, to which Merkel responded in a very schoolgirl-with-a-crush giddiness.

To end the sketch, everyone froze as “SNL” cast member Cecily Strong came on stage in character as Melania Trump. Melania then proceeded to give an anti-bullying PSA, saying that Donald Trump doesn’t deserve to be bullied because he would never bully others. “Please, European leaders, be best.”

And Melania punctuated that joke by pitching the audience on Peloton stationary bikes.

Julia Louis-Dreyfus Looks Back on Her ‘Miserable’ Time at ‘SNL’ in the 1980s: ‘I Was Unbelievably Naive’

In a candid and frequently hilarious chat with Stephen Colbert on Saturday, Julia Louis-Dreyfus reflected on her “miserable” time as a “Saturday Night Live” cast member, and how the experience taught her to make sure she always enjoyed every future job.

Speaking to Colbert as part of a benefit for Montclair Film at Newark’s New Jersey Performing Arts Center, Louis-Dreyfus explained how unprepared she was when she joined the show in the mid 1980s at the age of 21, not even finishing her studies at Northwestern University before heading off to New York.

“I was unbelievably naive and I didn’t really understand how the dynamics of the place worked,” she told Colbert. “It was very sexist — very sexist. People were doing crazy drugs at the time. I was oblivious. I just thought, ‘Oh, wow! He’s got a lot of energy!'”

Also Read: 'SNL': Will Ferrell's Gordon Sondland Shows Up to Ruin Things for Alec Baldwin's Trump (Video)

She and Colbert then joked for a second that they couldn’t understand how anyone could ever perform inebriated, just before taking big sips from their cocktails.

Louis-Dreyfus, who went on to decades-long TV success with shows like “Seinfeld,” “The New Adventures of Old Christine” and “Veep,” explained that her time on “SNL” led her to develop a system that helped her choose her future projects.

“It was a pretty brutal time, but it was a very informative time for me,” she told Colbert. She said she realized then she wouldn’t do “anymore of this crap” unless “it was fun.”

Also Read: 'SNL' Spoofs Democratic Debate With All-Star Lineup of Will Ferrell, Maya Rudolph, Woody Harrelson and More (Video)

“It is important and so basic, but I just felt like, ‘I don’t have to; I don’t have to do this, I don’t have to walk and crawl through this kind of nasty glass if it’s not ultimately going to be fulfilling,” she said. “And so that’s how I sort of moved forward from that moment and I sort of applied that kind of ‘fun meter’ to every job I’ve had since and it definitely has been very helpful.”

There was another benefit to the actress’ time on “SNL”: She met and bonded with Larry David, who would eventually put her in “Seinfeld.”

“Larry David and I had been on ‘SNL’ together my last year there because he was a writer, and we bonded because he was as miserable as I was,” she revealed, earning a laugh from the crowd.

Representatives for NBC did not immediately respond to a request for comment.

Ex-Congresswoman Katie Hill Describes Near-Suicide After Nude Photos Emerged: ‘I Just Wanted It All to Be Over’

Warning: This blog post contains descriptions of suicidal thoughts.

Former congresswoman Katie Hill opened up about having contemplated suicide after her October resignation, writing in an op-ed published in The New York Times on Saturday, “I stared at the veins in my wrists…tracing them with the edge of the knife, lightly at first, then pushing harder and harder.”

“In the days leading up to my resignation, my life was just like everyone’s worst nightmare. Millions of people had seen pictures of me naked,” Hill wrote. “After the images came out, as I lay curled up in my bed with my mind in the darkest places it’s ever been, countless texts and voice mails came from donors, friends, volunteers and voters sending love. But they couldn’t drown out the horrible messages and calls from people who found my phone number on the internet.”

Hill, who represented California’s 25th district that includes northern Los Angeles County and parts of Ventura County, resigned after the public revelation of a relationship with a former campaign staffer, which was bolstered by the release of intimate photos. Hill says she believes that her estranged ex-husband is responsible for leaking the photos — which she refers to as  “revenge porn” — to far-right website Red State, although he has denied the accusation and said he was hacked.

Two days after her resignation, the humiliation drove her to the edge, where she contemplated suicide.

“The future I thought was in store for me that was instantly and irrevocably gone,” she wrote. “Suddenly and with total clarity, I just wanted it all to be over. I got up and looked for the box cutter. I couldn’t find it. A part of my brain was saying: ‘Stop it, this is stupid. You’re not going to do it. Go drain the bathtub and get yourself together.’ But I felt like I was out of my body, like it was moving without me, and I got the paring knife and got back into the cold bath.”

She describes attempting to cut her wrists with a dull knife until “fine red lines started to appear,” and realizing that “if I pushed just a tiny bit harder I would start to bleed.” The thought of how taking her life would affect her family and the young women who looked up to her stopped her from following through.

“What would this do to my parents? To my brother and sister? And then I thought about my supporters,” she wrote. “I thought about the high school students who had told me how I inspired them. I thought about the Girl Scouts whose troops I’d visited who told me they wanted to grow up to be like me, and how their parents would explain this to them, and what it would do to them. And I realized I couldn’t do it.”

The next day she wrote her final speech, which she read on the House floor on Oct. 31.

“I don’t know exactly what’s ahead for me, and I know there’s a lot more pain ahead,” she concluded in the op-ed. “But I’m in the fight, and I’m glad it’s not all over after all.”

Rachel Brosnahan Talks Perfecting Her Stand-Up Game as ‘Mrs. Maisel': ‘We’re Learning Together’

When it comes to nailing her stand-up comedy skills for “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” its star, Rachel Brosnahan, says it’s something that she and her character, Midge, are “learning together.”

“The stand-up, in some ways it’s easier. You get a little more confident with practice,” Brosnahan told TheWrap ahead of the Amazon comedy’s Season 3 premiere on Friday. “But the audiences are getting bigger and we’re taking the show on the road. And we literally did. I performed in Miami in front of Miami locals. So just when I think I’m getting comfortable, there’s a new curveball thrown.”

It’s been intimidating for both Brosnahan and Midge to stand in front of a crowd and try to make them laugh. During the show’s first season, Midge wasn’t a comedian; she was just a funny wife and mother who found humor in everyday life. “She was just a funny woman who had a prolonged breakdown on stage. And it was hilarious,” Brosnahan said. “And then she kind of stumbled into this career that she found that she loved and wanted to pursue.”

In Season 3, Midge goes on the road with popular singer Shy Baldwin (Leroy McClain) as his opening act, where she is exposed to bigger and more critical audiences from all over the country. From the way Brosnahan tells it, she’s got her work cut out for both herself and her character.

“She’s gonna have to get technically better. She’s gonna have to write tighter jokes, improvise less. And she’s gonna have to be able to tell great jokes when she’s not having a breakdown or when she’s not distraught or angry at someone or upset about something that happened in her life. That’s challenging, and it also means that I have to become a better technical comedian, which is horrifying,” she joked.

Reflecting on the last three seasons of the show, Brosnahan admits that she’s surprised just how slow to grow Midge has been, which she never would have expected when she began the character’s journey three seasons ago.

“This is a double edged sword, but one of the biggest surprises to me is, for as smart as Midge is — and she is, she’s smart and sharp and funny — how slowly she grows sometimes,” Brosnahan said. “Despite the fact that everyone around her is telling her that they’re having issues of their own as well, she can’t hear it. Particularly with Susie. She’s often blind to the plights of other people, and for someone so smart, that’s been something that has been surprising to me, that I also think is not unrealistic.”

She went on. “Progress isn’t always linear — it’s almost never linear, certainly. And she’s growing at a sometimes slower pace than I would like her to. But she is growing… and she grows more in Season 3 than she has in the past two.”

Season 3 of “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” is now streaming in its entirety on Amazon Prime Video.

Rosanna Arquette Condemns Weinstein’s Lawyer’s ‘Attempt to Distort the Facts’ in ABC ‘Nightline’ Interview

Harvey Weinstein accuser Rosanna Arquette is criticizing ABC’s late-night news program “Nightline” for airing an interview Friday with the disgraced producer’s lawyer, saying the “one-sided” segment is the defense’s attempt “to distort the facts.”

“ABC’s Nightline’s grossly irresponsible, one-sided reporting is shameful and deeply detrimental to the survivors like myself who were assaulted and abused by Harvey Weinstein,” Arquette told TheWrap.

In the segment, ABC News reporter Amy Robach sat down with Weinstein’s attorney, Donna Rotunno, who explained her plan to defend Weinstein ahead of his Jan. 6 trial, and dismissed accusations made by the more than 80 women who accuse Weinstein of sexual misconduct, from harassment to rape.

“It sends a dangerous message to women that by reporting a crime, we will be subjected to victim-blaming and not be believed,” Arquette continued. “As his trial date approaches, I stand by the brave women who are testifying to ensure that their voices are heard and will fire back at any misrepresentations of the truth. Despite Weinstein’s lawyer’s attempts to distort the facts, I believe his days of destroying lives are over.”

Also Read: Rosanna Arquette Says Harvey Weinstein Should Go to Jail: 'Absolutely' (Video)

ABC declined to comment on the criticism Saturday. Weinstein has consistently denied all accusations of non-consensual sex.

In the interview, Robach asks Rotunno if she’s been accused of being “a traitor to her own gender” by defending a man accused of raping women.

“I don’t believe I am. I think in many ways I would hope that I could help women. What happens in these circumstances where women don’t want to take certain responsibilities for their actions, we infantilize ourselves. You have to know that when you make certain choices, there’s a risk,” Rotunno replied.

Robach’s response was to point out that “a lot of people would say that what you just said is victim-blaming.”

“That’s absolutely not true. If you don’t want to be a victim, don’t go to the hotel room,” Rotunno said. “And if you don’t want to be a victim, don’t sign an NDA. Then go out onto 5th Avenue, take a megaphone and talk about what you want to talk about.”

Also Read: Harvey Weinstein's Accusers and Attorneys to Sit Down for Court TV Interview Special

Gloria Allred, who represents Weinstein’s accusers Annabella Sciorra and Mimi Haleyi, responded to Rotunno’s comments in a statement to TheWrap.

“I disagree with many of Donna Rotunno’s statements,” Allred said. “Many business meetings with producers of films have been conducted in hotel rooms. This statement by Ms. Rotunno appears to suggest that if a woman is asked to go to a hotel room, that it is her fault if she is raped. That defense did not work in the criminal case against Mike Tyson a number of years ago. He was convicted of raping a woman in a hotel room and I believe that this attempt to blame victims who are raped in hotel rooms will not be successful now in the era of the ‘Me Too Movement.'”

In the “Nightline” interview, Rotunno made a point to say that she is “not the moral police on Harvey Weinstein” and emphasized that “Harvey has a right to a defense… If [the jurors] look at the evidence that’s going to be presented to them, I think they’re going to find him not guilty.”

Also Read: Bob Weinstein Confronted Harvey Over 'Misbehavior' 2 Years Before Scandal Broke

ABC News also quoted its chief legal analyst, Dan Abrams, in response to Rotunno’s claim that “going to a hotel room and having someone ask you if you’ll give them a massage is not rape, it’s not sexual assault, and it’s really not sexual harassment.”

“When someone in a position of power over someone else’s career makes the pass with the either explicit or implicit promise of career benefits, that is the definition of sexual harassment,” Abrams said.

On Saturday afternoon, Times Up tweeted a response to the “Nightline” segment from 21 women who came forward to report Weinstein’s sexual misconduct, including Arquette, fellow actors Ashley Judd and Rose McGowan, and Weinstein’s former assistant Rowena Chiu.

“This segment displayed, to a national audience, the same dismissive, manipulative tactics Harvey implemented to silence the voices of so many women for decades,” the statement read (see it in full below). “We believe the evidence against Harvey presented in the trial next month will be a moment of reckoning and he will be held accountable for his crimes.”

Lou Godbold, a Weinstein accuser and trauma specialist who signed the Times Up statement, also weighed in on the segment.

“Harvey’s defense is that all men are rapists so that women should not find themselves alone with a man, despite the fact that it was a common practice for powerful men to take business meetings alone and in their hotel suites,” Goldbold said in a tweet.

Time’s Up Legal Defense Fund co-founder Hilary Rosen also chimed in.

“This lawyer did her client no favors with this interview,” Rosen tweeted Saturday. “Especially when she blamed the women for seeking jobs and when she struggled to suggest that #HarveyWeinstein had any remorse. Kudos to [Dan Abrams] for his clarity in explaning [sic] the issues in this case.”

‘The Favourite’ Dominates at the European Film Awards

Eleven months after receiving 10 Academy Award nominations, Yorgos Lanthimos’ black comedy “The Favourite” dominated the European Film Awards on Saturday night in Berlin, winning four awards including the top honor, European Film.

Although the film was released in the U.S. in 2018, it was eligible for the EFA because it was released in January 2019 in the U.K.

Lanthimos also won the best director award, and his film about intrigue in the court of Queen Anne was named the year’s best European comedy. Olivia Colman was named best actress for the role that won her an Oscar in February.

Best-actor honors went to Antonio Banderas for Pedro Almodovar’s “Pain and Glory.”

Celine Sciamma won the screenwriting award for “Portrait of a Lady on Fire.”

Honorary awards went to actress Juliette Binoche and director Werner Herzog.

Going into the ceremony, Roman Polanski’s “An Officer and a Spy” was tied for the lead in nominations, four, with “Pain and Glory,” “The Favourite” and Marco Bellocchio’s “The Traitor.” The Polanski film did not win in any category.

Also at the ceremony, which was filled with playfully surreal skits, the European Film Academy announced that it was joining with the International Documentary Film Festival Amsterdam and the International Film Festival Rotterdam to create the International Coalition for Filmmakers at Risk, an organization “aimed at supporting filmmakers facing political persecution for their work.”

‘Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’ Season 3 Gets Premiere Date, First Plot Details Revealed (Video)

Happy early winter solstice, witches: Netflix has set the premiere date for “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina” Season 3 and released a description of the hellish events that lie ahead for Sabrina Spellman (Kiernan Shipka) and her coven.

The third season of the teen witch drama will launch Jan. 24, the streaming service revealed during a panel at Argentina Comic Con on Saturday. Readers can view the announcement video above.

As “CAOS” fans remember, Season 2 — which launched in April — ended on a very dark cliffhanger, as Sabrina’s boyfriend Nick Scratch (Gavin Leatherwood) was taken down to Hell. Here’s the official description for “Sabrina” Season 3, courtesy of Netflix:

Part Three finds Sabrina reeling from the harrowing events of Part Two. Though she defeated her father Lucifer, the Dark Lord remains trapped within the human prison of her beloved boyfriend, Nicholas Scratch. Sabrina can’t live with herself, knowing that Nick made the ultimate sacrifice and is suffering, burning in Hell under Madam Satan’s watchful eye. So with an assist from her mortal friends, “The Fright Club” (consisting of Harvey, Rosalind, and Theo), Sabrina makes it her mission to free him from eternal damnation and bring him back into her arms. However, the Dark Lord’s unseating has sent shockwaves through the realms–and, with no one on the throne, Sabrina must assume the title of “Queen” to defend it against a challenger, the handsome Prince of Hell Caliban. Meanwhile, in Greendale, a mysterious carnival rolls into town, bringing with it a threat to the Spellmans and the coven: A tribe of pagans looking to resurrect an ancient evil…

Readers can find out what “Sabrina” creator/showrunner Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa previously told TheWrap about “going to Hell” in Season 3 here.

‘Eternals': Marvel Debuts First Footage at Comic Con Experience Brazil

During a surprisingly short appearance at Comic Con Experience Brazil, Marvel Studios boss Kevin Feige presented the first ever public showing of footage from the studio’s upcoming “Eternals.”

The clip, which Feige said contained “raw footage pulled out of camera,” begins with a shot of Richard Madden’s Ikaris walking into the frame. This was followed by a group shot of the entire team, then a close up on Gemma Chan’s Sersi, and a fade in on the film’s logo. Another shot of the cast in their costumes came next, then in succession a shot of Angelina Jolie’s Thena, Salma Hayek’s Ajax on horseback, Kumail Nanjiani’s Kingo dancing,’ Thena kicking ass, and finally, dialogue by Hayek: “These people have changed all of us. We must protect them.”

After the “Eternals” footage, Feige briefly discussed Marvel’s upcoming “Black Widow” movie, accompanied by an extended look at a couple of scenes featured in the recent trailer.
