Colbert Thinks Trump Has Handled This Iran Business Like a Terrible Doctor Handles Cancer (Video)

Stephen Colbert is still figuring out how he feels now that what he calls “the Iran almost-war” appears to have ended, but on Thursday’s episode of “The Late Show,” he seemed pretty certain that Trump has been as big a jerk about the whole thing as a really bad doctor.

During his monologue, Colbert said that with apparent easing of tensions between the U.S. and Iran, “the world’s sphincter is finally un-clenching.” He then considered how “just a couple of days later, with the perspective of time, we can finally ask ‘was any of this legal?'”

Colbert noted that Trump has claimed he ordered the assassination of Iranian general Qasem Soleimani last week in order to stop “an imminent attack.” However, “so far Trump hasn’t provided any evidence of that, or told anyone what the attack would have been.”

That aspect of the situation has even angered some Republicans, Colbert noted, like Utah Senator Mike Lee, who described a briefing by Trump administration officials as “probably the worst briefing I’ve seen on a military issue in the 9 years I’ve served in the United States Senate.” Lee also told fox news “they refused to answer the question” of just what kind of attack they’re claiming was imminent.

“That was the only reason for the meeting,” Colbert said. “That’s like a doctor saying ‘yeah uh, we have the results of your MRI, but I refuse to show them to you. So, what do you want to talk about- hey, have you finished binging ‘The Witcher’ on Netflix yet? If not I’d get to that in the next couple of weeks if I were you.”

Colbert ended the bit by talking about a Vox report that during the briefing, Trump officials “were even ‘shushing’ lawmakers who asked tough questions.”

“OK, that one’s fine,” Colbert joked. “Remember what James Madison said to John Adams at the constitutional convention about the separation of powers: ‘Shut your dirty little mouth!'”

‘Brooklyn Nine-Nine': Jake Peralta and Captain Holt Reunite in Delightfully 1980s Season 7 Trailer (Video)

If you’re as impatient as we are for the return of “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” then you’ll be pleased to know that NBC has thrown you a bone in the form of a delightful, extremely 1980s new trailer for the upcoming Season 7, which premieres Feb. 6.

The trailer, which purports to introduce viewers to the “Nine-Nine” team, features a full-on VHS aesthetic completely with 4:3 aspect ratio, crummy tape decay and plenty of 1980s saxaphone, all in service to an attempt to portray the beloved sitcom as a gritty police procedural.

But more importantly, it gets people up to speed on where the squad is after the last minute weirdness of Season 6. For those who forgot, in the finale, Captain Holt (Andre Braugher) finally won his season-long battle of wits against corrupt Commissioner Kelly… only to end up with his archenemy Madeline Wuntch (Kyra Sedgwick) as the new commissioner. And worse, Wuntch once again screwed Holt over: Having discovered that he had worked as a patrolman for only a month before being promoted to detective back in the 80s, she demoted him back to patrolman.

As the trailer reveals, when we rejoin the squad in Season 7, Holt is still a beat cop, humiliatingly outranked by his former 99th precinct colleagues — and not even his beloved dog, Cheddar, respects him. But it seems a new criminal threat may just bring him and the “Nine-Nine” team back together. Also, Jake Peralta (Andy Samberg) tells an actually really funny Monopoly joke, that alas no one gets.

Watch the clip below:

If you're doing crimes, you'll be doing time. ????

‘Handmaid’s Tale’ Season 4 to Premiere This Fall

Fans of “The Handmaid’s Tale” will have to wait just a little while longer to return to Gilead this year, as Season 4 of the Hulu drama won’t be premiering until this fall.

“Season 4 will be in the fall,” “Handmaid’s Tale” executive producer Warren Littlefield told reporters at the Television Critics Association press tour Thursday, following a panel for Season 4 of FX’s “Fargo,” which he also executive produces. “So we’ll start principal photography March 2nd and we’ll be on in the fall.”

Hulu, which has yet to announce a premiere date for Season 4, did not immediately respond to TheWrap’s request for comment, but an individual with knowledge of production tells us the fall launch window for the next chapter of the Bruce Miller-created drama is accurate.

The Elisabeth Moss-led series was renewed for Season 4 last July, ahead of its Season 3 finale on Aug. 14. The dystopian drama’s third installment launched in June 2019, which made it ineligible for last year’s Emmys, and Seasons 1 and 2 premiered in April 2017 and April 2018, respectively. So Season 4 will be “The Handmaid’s Tale’s” first to debut in the fall.

Along with Moss, the series stars Joseph Fiennes, Yvonne Strahovski, Samira Wiley, Alexis Bledel, Ann Dowd, Max Minghella, Madeline Brewer, O-T Fagbenle, Amanda Brugel and Bradley Whitford.

“The Handmaid’s Tale” is executive produced by Miller, Moss, Littlefield, Daniel Wilson, Fran Sears, Ilene Chaiken, Eric Tuchman, John Weber, Sheila Hockin and Frank Siracusa.

The series hails from MGM Television.

Will Meghan Markle and Prince Harry Pursue Hollywood Deals After ‘Step Back’ From Royal Duties?

Now that Prince Harry and Meghan Markle, the Duke and Duchess of Sussex, have have announced they intend to “step back” from their royal duties and divide their time between the U.K. and North America, the million-dollar question is what the couple could be doing next.

It’s not clear whether Markle will be returning to the Hollywood life she left behind when she married the sixth in line to the British throne in 2018 — the American-born actress starred in TV shows like “Suits,” “Fringe” and “The League,” as well as films like “Get Him to the Greek” and “Horrible Bosses.”

Already, “Real Housewives” executive producer Andy Cohen opportunistically offered her a spot on the Beverly Hills edition of the Bravo reality franchise — “Open invite for The Duchess to join #RHOBH !!!” he wrote on the couple’s now-infamous Instagram post.

While that seems unlikely, it’s possible Markle could pursue any number of media projects, either as an actress, on-camera host or producer. One model for the couple might be Barack and Michelle Obama, whose Netflix-based Higher Ground is developing scripted and unscripted content on serious topics like race, class and civil rights.

Markle’s attorney at Stone, Genow, Smelkinson, Binder & Christopher did not immediately respond to a request for comment, nor did The Gersh Agency, which previously repped the actress. The PR firm Sunshine Sachs said it no longer represents her.

Also Read: Prince Harry and Meghan Markle to 'Step Back' From Royal Duties, Split Time in North America

But diving into content creation is not the only way Markle and Prince Harry can infiltrate the Hollywood scene — or “become financially independent,” as they stated in their bombshell Instagram announcement on Wednesday.

“I think Meghan Markle will remain a huge superstar,” Ronn Torossian, CEO of New York-based PR firm 5WPR, told TheWrap. “At this point, Meghan and Harry have the potential to get any endorsement deals in the world they may want.”

In fact, one former endorsement agent who previously worked on deals with high-profile clients told TheWrap that the “possibilities are endless” for Meghan and Harry due to their “international recognizability, which is good for international campaigns.” After all, the Boston-based marketing analytics firm SEMrush has ranked Meghan Markle’s online search volume at 3.4 million — dwarfing that of both Beyoncé (1.2 million) and sister-in-law Kate Middleton, Duchess of Cambridge (1 million).

“They are really brand-friendly — you have to keep in mind that brands are utilizing celebrity endorsements for a broad audience so the more squeaky-clean of an image they have, the more appealing they are for big brands. Procter & Gamble and Unilever are just two examples of big brands they could work with,” the former agent told TheWrap.

“I don’t see them doing a lot of endorsements together because typically, there aren’t couple endorsements,” she added. “Harry is a good-looking guy who I could see doing a classy campaign for a watch or an airline. Meghan is a mom and there are a billion campaigns that come to mind.”

How much could they stand to make from these endorsement deals, though? “They could easily make seven to eight figures, depending on the deal,” the agent said. “It would definitely help if they had a project going on because it makes them more bankable for PR appearances, so I would assume she’d go back to acting. If I were her agent, I would try to get them to do separate branding deals and have them build out their social media presence with their own accounts and then multiple platforms because that’s more dollars.”

She added: “Honestly, they’ve probably been flooded with endorsement opportunities but haven’t been able to take them because of their position. When I worked with other high-profile clients, they were very strict on the endorsement opportunities they took and always tied them to charity — and I think that’s what Meghan and Harry would like to do.”

Charity, which has been a big focus of the couple, will most likely be a big part of their work going forward, Torossian said, especially because they previously announced they would be launching a new charitable entity after stepping away from the Royal Foundation, the charity they jointly ran with William and Kate, the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge.

The agent noted that endorsement deals “can be structured so they get paid and in addition are donating to charity so it doesn’t come across as such a sellout, because they are bundling it with a donation.”

Also Read: Meghan Markle, Prince Harry Wax Figures Removed From Madame Tussauds Royal Family Exhibit

Markle previously served as a global ambassador for World Vision, the world’s largest international children’s charity. When the pair announced their engagement, they asked for donations to charity in lieu of gifts, selecting seven organizations that reflect “their shared values.” Those organizations included CHIVA (Children’s HIV Association), Crisis, Myna Mahila Foundation, Scotty’s Little Soldiers, StreetGames Surfer’s Against Sewage and The Wilderness Foundation UK.

Other ideas for Markle could be partnering up with brands for collaborations, such as Target for a home collection, or becoming ambassadors for charitable companies.

But Eileen Koch, CEO and founder of EKC PR, cautions the couple to take it slow. “My advice to them if they were sitting in front of me, would be to take a breath and to make sure they are in the right hands,” said Koch, whose clients have included Jamie Foxx, Floyd Mayweather and Carmen Electra. “They need strong management that’s looking at the entire picture, not just the moment, and that won’t take advantage of them. They also need to decide whether they want to continue in the public eye. Who knows if they even want to get into the endorsement space — I think it’d be more down the line.”

Particularly at this early stage in their transition from active royals, Koch said, it’s wise to proceed deliberately. “Everything is going to be thrown at them and they can’t accept everything — and they don’t have to,” she said.

‘Mrs. America’ Star Cate Blanchett Talks Finding Humanity in Phyllis Schlafly: ‘I Don’t Believe in Demonizing Anybody’

“Mrs. America” star Cate Blanchett might be portraying Phyllis Schlafly, the real-life conservative activist famous for outspoken opposition to women’s equality, the equal rights amendment, the right to an abortion, and same sex marriage. But as she told reporters Thursday during the show’s TCA panel, she didn’t set out to demonize her.

Blanchett told reporters how she found the humanity in the late political figure, whose ideologies were in direct opposition to much of Hollywood then and now, Thursday at the Television Critics Association Winter Press Tour.

“I don’t believe in demonizing anybody. My agreement or disagreement, my personal political persuasions — I couldn’t be less interested in folding into a character,” she said.

Also Read: Cate Blanchett's Phyllis Schlafly Is Against the Women's Lib Movement in FX's 'Mrs America' Trailer (Video)

According to the Blanchett, drama is “a place where you can flesh someone out.”

“Even in Spielberg’s ‘Lincoln,’ there’s a lot of invention there. You’ve got the letters, you’ve got the actual facts of what took place. But what went on behind the scenes you have to invent,” she said. “So at a certain point, you have to go where the character fits into the story, because you are describing a particular movement in time. “

She also pointed out that “no one is perfect.”

“The way you create ambiguity and juxtaposition in a character is to simply borrow two contradictory thoughts or actions, butt them together, and then present them to an audience,” she said. “We’re all full of contradictions and hypocrisies. No one is perfect, including Phyllis — although her hair was mostly always perfect.”

“But it is a challenge, I think, when you’re playing a figure who is so polarizing,” Blanchett continued. “In the end, how polarizing she became was the very thing that prevented her from getting in place in Reagan’s cabinet. It was definitely a challenge to find those nuances and not to play one note. But that comes from the script and the other actors you’re working with because in the end you just have to play those situations in a human way. Because she’s a human.”

Colbert Initiates Emergency Protocols After Trump Announces ‘All Is Well’ With Iran (Video)

Stephen Colbert was both relieved and completely freaked out on Wednesday’s “The Late Show” in response to what might be a cooling of tensions between the U.S. and Iran and Donald Trump’s assurances that “all is well.” Luckily, he had a non-disaster preparedness plan already in place.

“I’m happy to announce: It’s not world war III,” Colbert joked during his opening monologue. But, he continued, “here’s the thing. It’s not world war III, and that’s wonderful. But it’s not like nothing happened.”

Colbert was of course talking about the assassination of Iranian general Qasem Soleimani by a U.S. military drone strike last week, on the orders of Donald Trump. In the days since, rhetoric from Iran and from Trump has been increasingly bellicose. Then on Tuesday night, Iran launched missile strikes against airbases housing U.S. forces. After which something strange happened: Trump issued a statement attempting to reassure people that this doesn’t mean a war is breaking out.

“All is well! Missiles launched from Iran at two military bases located in Iraq. Assessment of casualties & damages taking place now. So far, so good!,” Trump tweeted. “We have the most powerful and well equipped military anywhere in the world, by far! I will be making a statement tomorrow morning.” (Trump has since essentially said he considers the matter settled for now.)

“Well there it is, there it is,” Colbert said. “Now you know. So important. Right there in black and white, reassurance from the commander-in-chief that there is absolutely nothing to-” at which point a loud alarm began blaring as a sign behind Colbert said “ALL IS WELL.”

“Oh no, it’s ‘The Late Show’s ‘All Is Well’ alarm,” Colbert said in a comedic panic. He then asked his bandleader Jon Batiste to “get the happiness football,” a parody of the so-called “nuclear football” that U.S. presidents carry around at all times. Colbert and Batiste inserted keys into the device at the same time, causing the alarm to stop.

Buck Henry, Writer of ‘The Graduate’ and Co-Director of ‘Heaven Can Wait’ Dies at 89

Buck Henry, the actor-screenwriter-director who co-created “Get Smart,” co-wrote “The Graduate” and co-directed the hit 1978 Warren Beatty film “Heaven Can Wait,” died Wednesday night in Los Angeles. He was 89.

According to Deadline, which first reported the news, Henry died at Cedars-Sinai Health Center following a heart attack.

Born Henry Zuckerman in 1930 in New York City, Henry was the son of silent film star Ruth Taylor. He began his entertainment career in the early 1960s as a cast member on TV shows like the “The New Steve Allen Show” and “That Was the Week That Was.” Soon after, he co-created the spy thriller parody “Get Smart” with Mel Brooks, also co-writing several episodes.

Also Read: Andrew Burkle, Aspiring Producer and Son of Billionaire Ron Burkle, Dies at 27

Though his first film script was for the 1964 movie “The Troublemaker,” in which he also had a minor role, Henry made his name as a screenwriter with “The Graduate,” which he co-wrote with Calder Willingham. Mike Nichols’ film earned him the first of two Oscar nominations.

Henry subsequently worked on several other important films, including “Catch-22” and “The Owl and the Pussycat” in 1970, and “What’s Up, Doc?” in 1972. Other credits from his long career include “First Family,” which he also directed in 1980, “To Die For” in 1995 and “Town & Country” in 2001.

In addition to “Heaven Can Wait,” for which he and Beatty earned an Oscar nomination as Best Director, Henry also directed the 1980 comedy “First Family” starring Bob Newhart as the president, Madeline Kahn as the boozy first lady and Gilda Radner as their twentysomething daughter.

Henry also worked frequently as an actor — memorably, he appeared as a semi-self parody in Robert Altman’s “The Player,” pitching a sequel to “The Graduate.” He became especially notable for numerous appearances on “Saturday Night Live.” Between 1976 and 1980, he hosted the show 10 times, by far the most frequent host during the show’s original era. His hosting record held until 1989, when it was broken by Steve Martin.
