Inspiration for writing fiction Pt. 2
As I prepare for the launch of my second full-length novel War With Black Iris, I wanted to share some more insights. I get ideas at the most unusual times. I rarely able to write them down because I’m doing things that make that impractical, but that doesn’t matter since if the idea is big enough, it will stay within until the next time I’m in the writing chair. Since I write fictional situations involving cybersecurity, I often get ideas about real situations that have happened but are so generic, and I need to breathe life into them as I write. An example of this is evidence contamination. For anyone that hasn’t worked on a digital forensics case, I will explain what that is. When an examiner seizes a piece of digital evidence, he should make an identical copy of it before performing an examination. The investigator should work from the copy (never the original). However, less experienced people in a hurry may forgo this step to their detriment. Some even know better and do it anyway, thinking it’s a calculated risk. Since I never wanted to explain to a judge why I didn’t take these steps, I would often work late into the night waiting for the forensic image to complete. I mention this because I fictionalized a similar situation in my first novel, White Hat Black Heart.

Update on War With Black Iris
I have been super busy preparing for the launch of the second book in the Cyber Teen Project series of books. War With Black Iris immediately continues the story of Nigel Watson, Josephine Smith, and the rest of his gang. I’m not going to include any spoilers, but the adventure takes place on several continents with more islands to explore. Copy editing is almost complete, and the proofreaders are ready. If anyone is interested in helping with a beta read I will be sending ARC copies out sometime during the week of April 13th. I will need all feedback by the first week of May. Otherwise the book is still on track for a May 19th release.

Inspiration for writing fiction Pt. 1
I wanted to give readers a little insight into my inspiration is for writing my books. For those who don’t know, I’ve been in IT since the early ninties. I specialized in the cybersecurity field in 2008. A few years into my security career, I get asked if something was safe. The idea to write about it was immediate, and I started writing technical how-to guides and published on my blog. When I didn’t get the adoption I was looking for, I decided to fictionalize it—creating the worlds where my characters lived proved to be more challenging than I thought.
Flash forward seven years later, I came across my unfinished manuscript for what would become White Hat Black Heart. I decided at that very minute to continue that work. Eighteen months later it was published.
Stay tuned for additional behind the scenes posts in the days leading up to the launch of War With Black Iris.

Mark of the Triad Launching January 21st
I have a new series that takes place 30 years in the future. Look for some familiar faces from the Cyber Teen Project. Below is the description.
What will the world look like in 30 years?
After a massive trade war, the United States lies in financial ruin. Fewer than twenty states remain. New power structures are formed; most locals revert to the barter system. Although some traditional infrastructure remains, they hold on by a thread.
Lonn Peters, a former detective for the Honolulu Police and a bounty hunter, is unemployed and is desperate to provide for his family. When an enticing offer lures him to the mainland Lonn is unprepared for what he finds. When a veteran detective goes missing, Lonn is tasked to investigate. What he finds threatens to unravel all he knows about law enforcement, people, and culture.
In this dystopian thriller, you never know who to trust.
