Short Stories and Writing Prompts #1 - Hunter
Had I imagined it? The wind's persistent howl makes it difficult to hear. No, I was not mistaken... There it is again... A mewling sound, like a sick kitten. No, not a kitten. It's more like...
Wait a minute what's that smell? The howling sound of the wind is distracting me but it still carries the scent... Metallic. Is that... Iron? BLOOD. I can smell blood! I called out to my partner and I ran in the direction of the bloody signature. His flat footed gait was no match for mine. Poor Carrick. He always struggles to keep up.
"Hunter, where are you going?"
I like Carrick, I really do but he is particularly obtuse. He asks me that question a lot. I mean really? Isn't it obvious? Then again, there's no moon tonight. I forget sometimes, that his eyesight is so poor.
"HUNTER STOP!"
Carrick was behind me now with a flashlight. I stopped abruptly. Barbed wire. That was close! The smell is stronger here so I nearly ran straight into it. I should have seen it. It's a pretty long fence. I suppose I'll thank him later.
Right now, he's a little preoccupied. He shines the flashlight along the length of the fence. A scrap of blue fabric is flapping in the breeze, caught on one of the barbs. That's what I could smell! Yes, there he is...
Carrick taps his shoulder and starts talking to himself. It used to confuse me a little when he did that but now I'm used to it.
"Carrick here, K-9 Unit. We've got him Sarg!"
The other officers descend on the man. Not that he can run away. He has an impressive rip along his thigh from where he'd tried to take on the fence and he is bleeding out. His mournful mewling was what alerted me to his location in the first place.
"Well done Hunter. Good boy! I think you deserve steak for dinner tonight."
Steak? YES! I barked my approval. He might be an obtuse human but he is my human and I love him...

This short story came about as a challenge to write 300 to 500 words incorporating all of the following:
1. BARBED WIRE
2. A SCRAP OF BLUE FABRIC
3. HOWLING WINDS

Meet Your Councillors
The twelve Councillors of Tweldor are chosen from among the Warriors to serve et amor in lumine (in light and love), until death.
The current council members are:
AGATHA. Human, in her late seventies or early eighties. Special talents - discernment, empathy.
AMARYLLIS - Seelie Fairy, age unknown. Medical Herbalist, and Healer, trained by the Physicians of Myddfai. Director of Healing at Tweldor. Also works as a hospital matron in the Human world.
ANEURIN (Known as Nye) - Seelie Fairy, age unknown.
BEN - Human, in his early sixties. Specialises in bush survival and also has some knowledge of herb lore.
CHANTAL - Siren, age unknown. Often works undercover as a singer.
ELIAM (Known as Liam) - Elioud, immortal. Shapeshifter. Survived the destruction of Atlantis.
FLETCHER - Elf, age unknown. Master of Archery at Tweldor.
HANNAH - Human, mid-twenties. Computer genius and social media guru.
MORGAN - Elioud, immortal. Incubus. Survived the destruction of Atlantis. Works as a Criminal Lawyer in the Human world.
RHYS (Formally known as the Welsh wizard, Merlin Emrys) - Cambion, Wizard, immortal. Served as a Dominus of Tweldor after the Battle of Camlann, in the sixth century AD.
TALLULAH - Elioud, immortal. Succubus. Survived the destruction of Atlantis.
YLVA - Werewolf. Currently working as a detective in the Human world.
The Councillors are currently led by the Half-Elf, LIBUSE (pronounced Lib-oo-shay), who was elected Domina shortly after the outbreak of the second, Human World War...
Immortals and long-lived hybrids are permitted to hold the leadership for a century. Alternatively, humans serve for a decade.
The current council members are:

Halloween 2019.
As I prepare "The Jezebels of Bedlam," for release in a paperback edition, I thought it might be a good opportunity to introduce some of the villains of the story...
ZOIIA (Human)
Zoiia is an exotic Eastern European beauty who relies heavily on her looks. She made her way to Australia to find her fortune. Somewhere on the journey, she becomes seduced by evil and begins to lose her humanity. It is difficult to find much to like about Zoiia. She is a very scary individual.
CHARLES DU MALUM (B.E.P.)
Charles is what urban legends call a "Black Eyed Person" (B.E.P.) He is a demonic assassin who also trains the girls at Jezebels.
AZAZAEL (Fallen angel)
Theodora (one of the nicer characters), describes Azazael like this: "He was one of the fallen angels who took human wives. He taught them witchcraft and encouraged fornication. The book of Enoch describes Azazael as having corrupted the whole Earth through the works that he taught - 'to him ascribe all sin,' it says."
ASMODEUS (Incubus)
According to legend, Asmodeus is the demon who fathered the wizard Merlin. His "speciality" is the seduction of chaste woman, to whom he appears as a very handsome man. Not surprisingly, he is considered the chief demon of lust. If only some of his victims checked his feet before allowing themselves to be enamoured. You see, in his human form, Asmodeus still has the feet of a rooster and he is not able to magically disguise them so... he keeps his boots on.

What is a Cambion?
What is a cambion? In myth and literature, a cambion is usually described as being the child of an incubus or succubus or demon and a human. Probably the most well known cambions are Caliban from Shakespeare's The Tempest, and the wizard Merlin whose mother was said to have been raped by the incubus demon Asmodeus. Both Merlin and Asmodeus are Characters in "The Jezebel of Bedlam."
Cambions can appear dead, showing no signs of life for up to seven years. This is what happened in the case of one of the daughters in "The Daughters Return" (due for publication in 2020).
Not understanding that her daughter wasn't entirely human, her mother assumed she really was dead, which is why she was able to leave her....
Are cambions immortal? It depends on which myth you read. In my stories, it depends on their demon parent and why they were created. Merlin is immortal in this story because he was created to stop the development of Christendom and keep Europe in the dark ages. Obviously, this could have taken longer than the average human lifespan so he was "made" by Asmodeus with that in mind. I have decided that the Jezebel cambions are not immortal. There may be other cambion characters to come that will be immortal... I haven't decided yet 😉.
