The Ornate Clock by Vineeth Thunoli

Blurb (as on Amazon)

For Jaison, it was always his family which came first. Even when he worked tirelessly, it was to provide for them, to give them a better life. Running a financial firm, he does not make much to get by, but still hopes for a good future.

Life, however, has other plans in store for him. One fateful night the unexpected happens and he finds himself in a situation he has no control of. Plunged into a world of complete darkness, with everything he lived for snatched away from him, he is driven to the extreme. But out of nowhere, something incredible happens. He discovers a secret, something that has been hidden away….something that has the potential to change his life.

What will happen to Jaison? Will he escape his dark fate? And what is the secret?

Written from Jason’s perspective, the novel takes the reader on a journey of emotions and deceit only to ultimately find hope where it was least expected. The main question that occupies the mind of the reader is, will Jaison escape his terrible luck.

Jason, the lead character of this thriller, finds himself in jail for a crime he did not commit. Being the offspring of a convicted felon, it is hard for him to make anyone believe that he is not the guilty party here. Everyone, including his almost estranged wife, and even his friends and colleagues turn against him. Does Jason manage to prove his innocence? Or will he have to spend the better part of his life behind bars?

What I liked about this book:
-> The story begins with a sense of foreboding, leaving you on the edge of your seat wondering what sinister event is approaching next.
-> I read a prison-related story after a long time. I think the last one I read was Shantaram and that’s kind of unbeatable. But this one is just as, if not more, compelling.
-> Jason’s backstory about his father being a criminal but how he turned out to be a good citizen, sends out an important message that we can let go of our roots and genes. It also makes us question our judgmental nature as a society where we are so quick to label someone because they come from a questionable lineage.
-> The suspense element is so well developed that I was glued to the story till the end.
-> The unexpected twists and turns made the story engaging and you just don’t know what to expect next.
-> The theme is applaudable and the plot is intricately woven.
-> The narration is quite engaging making you live through the torrid experiences that Jason goes through.
-> I had a feeling that this book would be unputdownable and it sure fulfilled it. I had goosebumps and sleepless night all throughout my reading of the book. What I really is the fact that not only does the book have a great storyline but that it has the multi-genre elements like mystery, sci-fi, drama, etc. I was really impressed to learn that this is the debut work of the author. I won’t be surprise me if this book gets adapted to a movie or web series. I, for one, would love to watch it.
After I was done reading it, I sat back with contentment on finishing such an amazing thriller book after a long time.

What I did not like about this book:
-> There is only character (Jason) in focus throughout majority of the book and this made me feel like something was missing.
-> The back and forth gets a little complex and the ending is slightly confusing.

Quotable quotes:
> Maybe it made them feel better that their crimes are less severe.
-> Running a business and a family together was no easy task if one didn’t earn much.

->People who rose to great heights were the ones who had firm belief in their actions.
-> As office was as good as its employees.
-> What business was it to me as to how a person led his life. Even my life was no better.
-> It was the money that mattered the most for a business. The ones who brought in more money deserved special attention.
-> Most challenging situations are quite difficult to respond to, for you would never prepare yourself for these.
-> The affection of a child, there is probably nothing purer than that.
->Whenever someone mentioned a small help, it was often an interlude to something big.
->Working with a flustered mind was akin to writing an essay while riding a wave.
-> Not everyone would chip in to help if you were in trouble.

-> Why didn’t he even try to help me, I wanted to ask him. But then, that was too much of an expectation. No one did such things in today’s world. Why would someone else risk their life for me?
-> Skinny as always, he was the type of person who would never put on weight, no matter how much he ate.

-> Staying composed in the face of misfortune was no easy task.
->As human beings, we have this habit of forming opinions in the very beginning itself. We do that the first time we lay our eyes on someone. After the early stages of the opinion formation, all the human mind does is search for points
and arguments to validate this point of view. Anything that does not sit well with it is discarded. In short, the very first opinion is very difficult to change.
-> The world is a cruel place. If you venture out with an innocent nature, you’ll be torn to pieces.
-> People were inherently good, only a few were rotten.
-> As a civilisation, we were not good at remembering. So, record keeping was important. What if years from now, people forgot my deeds? Records would serve as a reminder.
-> Nods and gestures were not preffered as responses in government institutions.
-> Great choices and delicious food are things we generally take for granted until life shows us
otherwise.
-> The human mind was strange. One moment you might have the greatest hatred for someone. The next moment everything simply melts away, only to be replaced with kindness.
-> When facing imminent death, nobody could remain calm. Perhaps there were sages who could.
-> It is often said that only in the gravest of situations does one find out how much courage one has.
-> It was human nature to feel better in the company of a composed person.
-> Some people had that ability. Just their presence or a few words were enough to make us feel a lot better. Maybe it had something to do with their confidence.
-> Trust is most important. You lose that and everything falls apart. No friendship or partnership can survive a loss of trust. Once it is broken, that it is the end of it.

Melissa and The Old Crone (The Pendant Chronicles Book 1) by Abhinav Jha

Blurb (as on Amazon)

Who would you choose, friends or family? Many of you might wonder that friends are also a part of family. Yes, but if someone puts this question with a condition that by choosing family, memories of friends will get vanished, what will you decide?

Read this book to know what was Melissa’s decision and how it affected her not-so-perfect life. This is a story of time travelling with a pinch of magic and of course, the essence of friendship.

Genre: Fiction/ Fantasy/ Sci-Fi/Teenage Drama

Pages: 96

Format: Kindle eBook

Price: 79 INR/$0.99

My Ratings: 3.4/5

On her 15th birthday, Melissa finds out unbelievable things about her dad who has been missing from her life since her birth. After wanting and waiting for so many years to meet and get to know him, she finally has a chance, but will she take that chance when it comes at the cost of losing all her friends?

Book cover taken from Amazon

What I liked about the book:

I loved the inspirational advice given by various characters throughout the book. It was insightful and relatable. The bond between Melissa and her friends Bella, Daniel, and Lucky was very heartwarming, especially that of Melissa and Bella. It leaves behind important messages like:
a) One should not forget their friends once their purpose is served.
b) One can’t really change the events of their life.
c) Focusing on the present is better than regretting over the past or worrying about the future. The plot is unique and the story moved at a fast pace. I liked the imagination of the author.

What I did not like about the book:

The character of Melissa was really irritating at times. The writing is very colloquial and riddled with grammatical mistakes. A round or two of editing would have made the story really compelling.

Quotable quotes:

-> Intense emotions shouldn’t serve as an excuse to justify misbehavior. Feeling angry doesn’t give her a right to hit someone, and feelings of sadness don’t have to lead to moping around for hours on end.
-> The one who insults in response to insults is called an illiterate person and it’s not necessary to respond to every stupid act.
-> Learn to forgive people and let go of things that do not have any importance in your life.

-> Even though our paths are connected we have to worry about our destination, not that of others.
-> You cannot help everyone you meet. You must help only those, who have the courage to help themselves. Only help those who deserve your help.
-> Whenever we try not to make any sound, we always end up making much of it.
-> Accept yourself as you are, do not change yourself. Your appearance just matters a little bit. The thing which matters is your warm and humble heart.
-> Friends don’t demand anything in return for their help or favor because there is a principle of friendship, if a friend asks for something, it is not forbidden.
-> We should always do what we want and what we believe is right for us.
-> We cannot leave enjoying our life to the fullest, and we don’t know whether we will get another chance at something. So, you have to enjoy every moment of your life and not ruin it for just any reason.

-> Having a friend who understands your silence more than words is the best gift in this world.
-> Always go with your heart and not with your mind while making important decisions.
-> There is a principle of friendship, once you raise your hand for friendship, you can’t take it back. A friend is always a friend, no matter what happens.
-> You’re going to mess up sometimes, it’s a universal truth. But the good part is, you get to decide how you are going to mess up. Keep trying, hold on, and always, always, always believe in yourself. Because if you don’t, then who will?
-> Life’s a beautiful thing and there is so much to smile about.
-> You cannot blame anyone for the decisions you make in your life.
-> Be yourself, do your own thing and work hard. The right people – the ones who really belong in your life – will come to you and stay forever.
-> We cannot reverse our deeds; we have to deal with the consequences. Our problem is, we always chase the thing which we lack in life but do not respect the ones who are already in our life. So, forget about the past, forget about the future, all we have is now-this very moment. Try to be happy
and share happiness to the people you meet.
-> There are ups and downs in everyone’s life. It’s up to us as to how we are dealing with it and what decisions we make according to the situations.
-> You cannot change your future without experiencing it.
-> For her, dates didn’t matter, what mattered were the memories.
-> Friends are the family we choose. Our friends are a part of our family. If we choose our family, our friends are included in it by default.
-> We should live in our present and enjoy every moment with our loved ones.
-> We either sit around the moments of the past, or plan for the time to come, but life, life passes by. The truth is that neither we can see the future nor can we create it. We can only embrace the future with patience and courage. By doing this, every moment of life will be filled with life.
-> If we should live in present and not think about the future, then we shouldn’t think about the past either.

No Entry Without Permission

Photo by phil cruz on Unsplash

It is likely that somebody crossed a line,

Many eons ago,

Before privacy and personal space,

were clearly defined.

Probably someone thought out loud or in their mind,

“Hey, I don’t like you being so close to me.”

Or “I wish there was a way to stop people from entering a certain space I can call my own.”

Or “Can there be a way to shut people out?”

Or, “Should we have a system where people need to ask for permission before coming too close?”

And maybe that’s why we have doors.

Both physical and emotional.

Of Rains and More : Rains and Everything about It by Arti P

Blurb (as on Amazon):

The rains bring so many wonderful memories and moments. For some it is being one with nature, for others, it is tea and fritters, for some it is the festivities and for book lovers it is an excuse to curl up with the book. If you are a lover of rains, then Of Rains and More is a book for you.

Genre: Fiction/Poetry

Pages: 68

Format: Kindle eBook/Paperback

Price:

Kindle eBook: 49 INR/$2.99Paperback: 145 INR/$8.13

My Ratings: 4.4/5

This is a collection of 55 refreshingly delightful poems on rain and everything that comes with it. The poems are not bound to any specific structure besides the common theme and object of love – rain. With a wide variety of subjects being touched, the collection is riveting and stirring.

Book cover taken from Amazon

What I liked about the book:
-> It contains poems on almost everything. Anything that you can find around yourself, you can find some words on it within the pages of this book.
-> The poems are extremely charming, and the words within them distinctly tell that the author is a very keen observer. someone who is unreservedly aware of her surroundings.
-> While reading the poems, one will surely feel the vibrations of life, hope, positivity, love, and nature.
-> The words strike a deep chord making you wonder about when and how you stopped enjoying the simple yet amazing things in life, especially those that nature offers in abundance.
-> The poems help us recall the splendid memories and moments that the rain brings. They are mesmerizing and will soothe your soul.
-> One of my favorite things about the writing in this book was that I was able to understand and easily relate to it. It was to connect with and therefore easy to absorb. The words are heartfelt and unassuming and they hold power is in their simplicity.
-> Some of my favorite titles that will stay with me for a long long time include Independence Day, Like Button, Mother and Son, Love and Tea Seller

What I did not like about the book:
-> Some poems felt out of place in this collection as they did not particularly follow the theme of ‘monsoon’ and ‘rains’.

Quotable quotes:
-> As the oil spluttered
And the batter-fried
With onions and potatoes
The monsoon outside
Seemed perfect

-> The mountains were all-pervasive
With roots in the earth
And tips into the clouds
They truly saw the world.
-> The clouds cleared
To reveal
Silver shiny stars
On the canvas
Of a grey-black sky
Nature was the best painter

-> The weather was chilly
With tiny drizzles falling on people
“a good day for business”
Thought the tea seller with a smirk.

->They formed a pattern
For gazers,
The stars were playing
Their own symphony

> Why does the monsoon
Always seem straight out of a painting?
-> The ‘pit pit pit’ on my window

Meant that the Rain God
Had now given me permission
To enjoy the cuppa
Making it the perfect moment

Fake Posh by Deepti Sharma

Blurb (as on Amazon):

Fake Posh is a short-story collection consisting of four stories. Fake posh. Besides ideal and real, co-breathes our another sense of self of what’s that is practical, profitable and sustainable. Two boys toiling over their dream of having a music band, a union rooted in differences and a wise affair blooming over a dissertation thesis. Three parallel plots mingled with a desert music festival, the story looks subtly into our primal hu-man nature in different forms. Mr-Touch-Me-Not. An MBA student anonymously hosting a late night radio show on weekends is living the life of her dreams. Though she speaks her mind instead of heart on matters of love, her show is a rage among teenagers who come looking for ways to channel their juvenile rebellion or escapes out of toxic relationships. All hell breaks loose as her own preachings turn predatory to her own love life. Standing at crossroads of what she’s always known and what she knows now, does she find a way out? Circus. Circus is about two sisters lounging on sofa discussing the younger one’s bushy eyebrows. The conversation escalates to debating the current stance of social media in our world. This rant lets their lava of disgust and sorrow out, as does their concern for and against people treating Internet as their personal dumpster. With no end and no judge to our acts of virtual vulnerability exposé, their chat draws an analogy between social media and a circus. Stand-up comedian. Forty something Kunal’s world has come crashing down over his new found information. Broken-hearted and inconsolable, he doesn’t know where to go and whom to turn to with all this pain. His enormous sense of loss and the sheer longing to hold on to his daughter remain veiled in his silence behind the cacophony of his souring professional acumen, best friends from college with their moral compasses now hanging just as loose as their bellies, denial, destiny and endless what ifs.

Genre: Fiction/Short Stories

Pages: 123

Format: Kindle eBook/Paperback

Price:

Kindle eBook: 49 INR/$0.99Paperback (available only in India) : 249 INR

My Ratings: 3.5/5

A collection of four short stories (Fake Posh, Mr. Touch-Me-Not, Circus, and Stand-up Comedian) centered around the theme of human hypocrisy and the façade that people put up to mask their ugly selves.

Book cover taken from Amazon

What I liked about the book:
-> Each story has its own charm and simplicity and is beautiful and different.
-> The concerns raised through the stories will inspire the readers to re-think a lot of things, especially their thoughts and actions.
-> The stories revolve around some very contemporary issues. The main theme is the fake façade or mask that people wear to hide the ugly part which lies behind their social media profile especially related to their love and interpersonal relationships.
-> The author has poignantly highlighted the thought process of the youth and how easy it is for them to fall in love, get out of it, patch up, bring out their anger, frustration, accept and become practical in life. These short stories are just fictional pieces but rather a true version of how we have changed our persona towards life. They are interesting and impactful.

What I did not like about the book:
-> The story Fake Posh, had too many characters and a very little description about them. It was both confusing as well a little disappointing.
-> The story Circus, is way too problematic in its opinions which come across as hypocritical and anti-feminist.
-> The cover is too basic for my liking. I especially found it less appealing because it just doesn’t justify the content or the theme of any of the four stories.

Quotable quotes:
-> What is life if not a series of affixes? Things come finding and leaving us all the time; their bold imprints left behind.
->You need talent to be successful, not money.
->If you don’t plan your life now, life will make plans for you.
-> The stupid love stories they show in movies have spoiled the entire generation’s mind. Compromising with your self-worth is not love. All of this ‘love conquers all’, ‘it’s all about love’, ‘you only find true love once’ feeds shit to the young minds. To hell with love if you can’t respect an individual.

-> You need to understand one thing very well in life: overthinking never solves any problems.
->If we need ten things in life, life will make sure we only get nine. Nobody gets everything, so don’t be upset about it. Give your best and just see what happens.
-> They say getting back with your ex is like putting the poop back in your ass.
-> Such is life. It never gives us the slightest hint of self-doubt.
->Nobody cares how rich you are if you are not happy.

->Life is too complicated to lose out on simple stuff.
-> Every individual has the right to post whatever they want. You shouldn’t be so judgmental of it.
-> Life surprises us in the most unexpected ways. With every birthday every year, we meet some people and learn some experiences. Like, you know, once you are in your late twenties, you start comparing your life with the dreams you once saw. But, not everyone is amused that they have changed so much. In fact, most of us aren’t. But this change is so subtle that we don’t even realize it.
-> That’s how subtly changes enter our lives. When we are busy relishing the constancy of it. Just then.
-> A major reason why people fall out of love is when their hopes are killed. The little moments when you don’t keep your promises, when you lie about your actions and break the other person’s trust, you actually kill their hope of happiness. When a couple loses that hope between them, time and again, the love fades away automatically.
-> How much can you fight for love? How much can you bear the absence of effort in a relationship? When the other person doesn’t care about your feelings, you develop a weird hatred for them. But how much can you hate a person you love?
-> Dreams fade away when life happens. That one thing that you have been dreaming all your whole life, slips out of your hands and you just stand there, watch it going, helplessly.
-> Life can be unpredictable, and we should always be prepared for the worst.
-> We all plan out life throughout, but how many times life turns out the way we wanted? Is there even a single person on Earth whose life turned out the way they wanted? Of course not.
-> Life will always surprise us in the most unexpected ways. And we should hold on to what we love; things as well as people.

-> Life is definitely going to bring its own waves and it’s never good or bad, but all about how well you manage it.
-> The second half of life is an exact replica of your karma in the first half.
-> Life will do what it has got to do. You do what you WANT to do. Don’t stop after two jumps!
->If we all know that life is not going to turn out our way, then should we stop dreaming? No, that would take away the charm of life. If you are ashamed of your past, then you haven’t relished your journey. Enjoy the journey, destinations are overrated!
-> Friendship is more important than money.
-> Don’t talk money, if you don’t pay your bills.

-> No relationship works without money.
-> It’s not a particular moment when we realise we are sad. Or that we are lonely. It’s a constant fight with our consciousness and memories, brain and heart; a series of negative thoughts within ourselves that breaks the hope of a better future. When people lose hope, they lose the battle. It’s the worst thing you can do to a person. All those who are on the giving end consider themselves equal to God of their own small world, are unaware of what’s coming for them. Those people who made you go through this will never find peace in their life. They will not have a sound sleep. They have ruined their future. They will crave for the warmth of true love. And karma will take care of everything. So, flush the negativity out of your lives.

-> If you can believe in something, you can do it.
-> It’s never about the time but about the right person. If age defined love, nobody would get divorced in their forties.
-> Is love enough to ignore everything else? Does love really change people? Do people even change? But what life is if not a series of endless but-ifs!

> A smile lingered over his lips and he thanked God for there was this one person who made him feel so weak in his knees. Wait, too old. Made his heart skip a beat. Yeah, that’s how people say it these days.
-> Men don’t have guts to leave their friends even if they know they are psychopaths. We define friendship by the number of beer bottles we gulp down together, not by being there when we need a friend the most. We call a guy ‘impotent’ if he doesn’t abuse, drink, smoke or sleep around. And because of this pressure of being a MAN, we become a victim of a false immoral life with emotional emptiness and fake masculinity that doesn’t make us guilty of breaking someone’s trust.

The Language of Love

Photo by 德綱 曾 on Unsplash

“Does papa say, ‘I love you?’ , to you ma?”

The mother was surprised at such a bold question from her toddler.

She pondered for a while and answered, “No, not really.”

“Papa, do you not love ma?”

It seemed the little one was hellbent on getting to the root of this.

As it was the father’s turn, he felt a bit like being under trial.

He coughed uncomfortably and answered after some thought, “Dear one, do you know that I love you?”

The infant nodded in a heartbeat, which gave the father some confidence.

“I am sure your mother knows it too then. That I love her very much.”

The mother blushed at this, but it seemed the father wasn’t done.

“You see, sometimes it is not necessary to say it so much in words.”

Both the mother and child nodded as they understood what he meant.

After all, if not out of love, why would he do the small and big things?

Right from waking them up every day to making sure they slept on time and everything else in between.

Thank You, Self

Photo by Kelly Sikkema on UnsplashDear Me,

I’m writing this, because someday, in the near or far future, I know you will need it. There will be days when you feel demotivated.

You will doubt yourself. You will question everything about yourself.

This is why you need to be reminded to go on. Because, you haven’t come this far, to stop here. You need to be reminded that there is still a long way to go. There are so many things you have yet to experience, learn and achieve.

You need to be reminded that there is still a long way to go.

So, don’t belittle yourself because of whatsoever reason.

Did somebody badmouth you? C’mon. Haven’t you already faced the worst there? Ignore them.

Did you fail at a task you set out to do? That’s happened before too. So stop feeling sorry for yourself and finish that task, even if just a little late or lower than your expectations. Because knowing you, I’m sure you won’t move on to the next task until you have completed this one.

If it’s neither of those reasons, then surely it’s either something trivial or much bigger a hurdle than you’ve ever faced before.

But you know what? Just remember all those things you’ve surpassed already and you’ll be fine. Because resilience is something you’ve always had and always will have.

You weathered the storm well.Oh, and also. Thanks for being by my side, through thick and thin, literally as well as figuratively (you know what I mean)

Always there with and for you,

Yourself.

See vs Observe

Photo by Hermes Rivera on Unsplash

Most people go through life being

Involved and absorbed in their own lives.

They chase knowledge, wealth, and power

Not realizing, and even missing out on,

The joy of just looking at things and the people around them.

The difference between good and great is in the beholder,

It’s the difference between a mere glance and a keen observation.

The things we crave so much for,

Cannot always be attained by hunting and hustling behind goals and dreams.

Sometimes they need to be learned by looking, observing, learning, and then inculcating.

The Glue That Holds Us Together

A family photograph of myself, my parents, and my brother (2014)

I don’t have the right words and lines to write for you,
Because whatever I say won’t be enough whether old or new.
More than a mother you’re a friend, an advisor, and a supporter true,
But above all that you’re a teacher, I turn to for asking questions, many or few.
I know not many share such a relationship with their moms,
That’s why I cherish so much this special bond.

We gossip, we laugh, and even disagree and argue,
But that doesn’t belittle the respect I have for you.
Let me take this moment to thank you for the million things big and small,
That you’ve done and continue to do for me and for us all.

You are the biggest source of energy and entertainment,
You make our lives better, livelier, and full of contentment.
