Things That Are Over

Some happy things and some not so happy things to report.First, let's dispense with the negative. As far as I'm concerned the Stanley Cup Playoffs are done. Over. Finished. Oh, I'll watch the Finals, sure. And I'll pick a team to root for even if my heart won't be in it. Maybe Chicago. Maybe San Jose. A team from the Western Conference (yes, Chicago is in the Western Conference for all you hockey neophytes and no it doesn't make much sense) The Vancouver Canucks have been eliminated. The Pitt...

LA Festival of Books and Calabasas High

Just back from my three day whirlwind tour of Los Angeles, Calabasas, and Encino.First things first. I must apologize to the Los Angeles Kings for coming down to L.A. and rooting for Vancouver so passionately and loudly at the Staples Center that the Canucks took my cheers to heart and won the game. There. I said it. I feel so much better. Now I can move on and start watching the second round of the playoffs. All right, on to the good stuff:I had a phenomenal time at the Los Angeles Times Fest...

Nevada Is My New Favorite State!!!

Just got official word that SWIM THE FLY has been nominated for a NEVADA YOUNG READERS AWARD 2011. It's between Swim and four other books and the final voting is May 2011. So, this will be my first official campaign blog. I have a year to get the word out to all those fantastic kids in Nevada (who just so happen to be the best kids in the entire world - and I'm not just saying that). So thank you! Thank you! Thanks you, children of Nevada!!!In other - not quite as exciting news - the hockey p...

Los Angeles Times Book Festival

Hey all. Just wanted to let everyone in the whole world know (because, let's face it, everyone in the whole world is reading this blog) that I will be appearing (out of the mist) at the Los Angeles Times Book Festival on Sunday April 26th at 11:00am in Moore Hall to do a panel with Meg Cabot, Robin Benway, and Rosalind Wiseman. Come on down and have a listen. I expect this discussion to get very heated and perhaps even break out into a donnybrook amongst us panelists. Donuts may be hurled, wa...

Home Sweet Home

So much to write about and such a foggy head. Took home a nice souvenir from London, England. A great big United Kingdom Cold! This isn't your ordinary sneezing and feeling rotten for a couple of days cold, either. It's the cough-until-you-want-to-puke-feeling-dizzy-exhausted-use-up-boxes-and-boxes-of-tissues-going-on-ten-days-now kind of cold. And I don't even have the worst of it. My wife has it three times as bad as me and I feel very sorry for her.And so, I'm not going to go on at length ...

Teenreads.com

I was very pleased when my super-cool publicist Tracy Miracle put me in touch with the super-cool people at Teenreads.com and arranged for me to be a guest blogger. The result can be read here: Teenreads.comIt's a very different type of blog for me. Much more "serious writerly advice" than I dole out here. Well, okay, perhaps not totally serious—there are several mentions of vomiting involved—but I really got into the spirit of things and had a great time writing this little article. They are...

London: A Love Story

So, here I am with the family hanging out in London for a few weeks. My editor didn't want me to get bored so she sent the copyedits for Beat the Band so I'd have something to do in between seeing priceless works of art and having tea with the queen. I have to say, it was fun rereading the manuscript. It'd been a couple of months since I'd sent it along and I was pleasantly pleased to visit with Matt, Coop, and Sean again. Plus, I got to add a few more funny jokes which I'm sure you'll apprec...

Olympics: A Summary

As everyone knows already, Canada won the gold medal men's and women's hockey games, which was the icing on the glorious Olympic cake that I got to eat for five incredible days in Vancouver last week. If you are a regular reader of this blog then you know that going to the Olympics - and more specifically, Olympics hockey (and even more specifically, men's Olympic hockey) - was something I've wanted to do before I take leave of this world. And I could not have scripted the scenario any better...

Canada Gave Me A Scare

Well, last night's game between Canada and Slovakia was going along pretty smoothly there for a while. At 3-0 for Canada going into the third period I thought for sure we would be seeing a rematch of the Salt Lake City Olympics between USA and Canada. And then.. it was 3-1. Okay, big deal. Canada still had a two goal… 3-2. Uh oh. I saw the whole thing crumbling down. My dream Gold Medal game falling to pieces. Slovakia vs. USA just doesn't have the same dramatic ring as Canada vs. USA. I was ...
