Did You Know? Christmas Isn’t Over Yet for the Amish!

Old Christmas: A Day of Rest, Reflection, and Family Fun

As we pack away our Christmas decorations and usher in the New Year, many of us might not realize that the Christmas season isn’t quite over for the Amish. January 6th, known as Old Christmas or Alt Chrischdaag, holds a cherished place in the hearts of many Plain folks. This day, steeped in tradition and meaning, commemorates the Epiphany—the day the wise men brought their gifts to the Christ child.

But why is January 6th called Old Christmas? Let’s step back in time for a quick history lesson. In 1582, Pope Gregory XIII made a significant change to the calendar, deleting ten days to realign it with the year’s seasons. This adjustment technically shifted Christmas Day from December 25th to January 6th. While most of the world embraced the “new” calendar, the Amish and other Plain communities retained their original way of marking time, giving us what we now know as Old Christmas.

For the Amish, Old Christmas is more than a historical footnote.

It’s a sacred day of rest and reflection, often observed with fasting in the morning to honor the spiritual significance of the holiday. This quiet time offers a moment to pause and remember the greatest gift of all—Jesus Christ.

Once the morning’s quiet reflection has passed, the day turns into a joyous celebration. Families gather together, and for many Amish communities, it’s a chance to reconnect with their “faraway family”—relatives who live in other towns or districts. These gatherings are filled with hearty meals, laughter, and meaningful moments.

The day’s activities reflect the Amish love for simplicity and togetherness. Ice skating, sleigh rides, and board games often take center stage. For the younger ones, it’s a time of excitement and fun, while the older generations enjoy the warmth of shared stories and memories. It’s not uncommon for the men to retreat to the barn for discussions about the past year’s challenges and blessings, as well as plans for the upcoming planting and harvest season. These conversations, steeped in tradition, show their commitment to working together as a community.

The Amish Book Cellar The Amish Baker Caper The Amish Widow's Last Sticth Food, of course, plays a significant role in any Amish gathering, and Old Christmas is no exception.

Tables overflow with dishes like roast chicken, mashed potatoes, homemade bread, and desserts like shoofly pie and sugar cookies. The meal is a reminder of God’s provision and the joy of sharing His blessings with loved ones.

For me, one of the most beautiful aspects of Old Christmas is how it highlights the Amish value of family, faith, and community. In our busy, modern world, January 6th offers us all a gentle nudge to slow down, reflect, and hold close the things that truly matter.

Have you ever celebrated Old Christmas, or do you observe Epiphany in your family? I’d love to hear about your traditions in the comments! As we step into this new year, may we all find moments of peace, rest, and togetherness—whether on Old Christmas or any other day.

My Favorite Christmas Moments from Amish Fiction

Christmas brings a unique joy, a season when cherished memories feel like gifts to be unwrapped again.

Growing up, Christmas was always special. Though my parents didn’t have much, we never felt we were lacking. From the box of chocolates on my mother’s coffee table to the first magical glimpse of our tree, those moments are etched in my heart.

As an author, I love weaving the warmth of Christmas into my Amish fiction. Here is one of my favorite scenes from An Amish Christmas Table – Love Beneath the Pine that I hope will spark memories of your own holiday celebrations.

My favorite scene from An Amish Christmas Table

Before she could thank him, he slowed the sleigh and headed down a hidden alley that emerged into a small opening where a bonfire cracked invitingly, melting the snow surrounding the snowy clearing.

Hannah pulled her gloved hands to her lips and whispered, “It’s beautiful.”

After pulling up next to a nearby tree and securing the sleigh to a hanging branch, Isaac helped Hannah down, his eyes shining with anticipation. “I wanted our day to end with something special, just for us—a moment to enjoy the season in a way you’d never forget.”

Hannah gasped in delight as she noticed a cozy picnic had been laid out. A thick layer of blankets was spread out on the snow, and a thermos of hot cider peeked out of the top of a picnic basket lined with treats.

An Amish Christmas Table

This scene from An Amish Christmas Table holds a special place in my heart because it captures the magic of simple, thoughtful gestures during the holiday season. It reminds me that some of the most cherished Christmas moments aren’t about grand celebrations but the quiet, intimate times we share with those we love. The idea of Isaac planning a surprise picnic, complete with a cozy bonfire and warm cider, speaks to the beauty of slowing down and savoring the season’s warmth and wonder. It resonates with me because it echoes the joy of creating unforgettable memories, much like the ones from my own childhood—where the simplest traditions brought the greatest happiness.

Order Your Copy Today Christmas is a season of cherished memories, and I’d love to hear yours!

What moments from your holiday celebrations have stayed with you over the years? Whether it’s a special family tradition, a meaningful gift, or a simple act of kindness, I’d be honored to share in your Christmas joy.

Email me your favorite Christmas memory at author@tracyfredrychowski.com, and I’ll be selecting some to feature in my next newsletter. Let’s spread the warmth of the season by sharing stories that remind us all of the true spirit of Christmas. I can’t wait to read your beautiful memories!

A Taste of Amish Tradition: My Friend’s White Bread Recipe

There’s something magical about stepping into my Amish friend’s kitchen, nestled in the heart of Amish country. Every time I visit, I’m greeted by the rich, warm smell of bread baking in the oven. It’s a scent that’s part of the house itself, as if every loaf she’s ever made has left a little piece of itself behind. Her kitchen has this comforting charm, filled with all the little touches that make an Amish home so welcoming. And of course, there’s always something fresh out of the oven.

Amish white bread Amish white bread Amish white bread Amish white bread

Recently she shared her recipe for white bread with me. “It’s nothing special,” she said, but I knew better. It’s the recipe that fills her kitchen with that bakery-like aroma every day, the one she uses as a base for her famous cinnamon rolls. I scribbled it down quickly, excited to bring a bit of that warmth into my own kitchen.

Baking is a big part of an Amish woman’s day, and in my Women of Lawrence County Series, each woman takes the time to bake and make hearty meals for her family. Food is more than sustenance; it’s an expression of love and tradition, filling homes with warmth and connection. If you’d like to experience what it’s like to walk through a day in the life of an Amish woman, give any of the books in this series a try.

Each story invites you into the heart of Amish life, where faith, family, and food are at the center.

A Visit to Lancaster’s Central Market

A Sweet FallVisit to Lancaster’s Amish Country

There’s just something about Amish Country in the fall! Recently, I spent a few days exploring Lancaster, PA, with my friend and fellow writer, Debra Torres. We were actually there for an author event (so fun to meet some of our readers in person!), but we couldn’t resist sneaking away to explore the Central Market and, of course, getting a little lost on the back roads of Lancaster County. It was a trip packed with everything that makes fall wonderful—good company, scenic views, and delicious food.

Author, Tracy Fredrychowski Author, Debra Torres The Cozy Vibe of Central Market

Stepping into Central Market that morning was like walking straight into the heart of Lancaster. Saturdays are definitely, lively and there was just enough nip in the air to make our warm treats even better. I enjoyed a warm pumpkin scone (it was as delicious as it sounds), and Debra went for a yogurt bowl topped with the freshest fruits. We both sipped on hot tea to ward off the chill and took a minute to soak up the hustle and bustle around us. From the smell of fresh bread and spices to the cheerful chatter of visitors, it was a feast for the senses!

Being at the market reminded me why I’m so drawn to Amish culture. Every booth told a story of family, hard work, and faith. From handmade crafts to homegrown vegetables, you could feel the pride and tradition in everything. It was inspiring—and as an Amish fiction writer, I couldn’t help but feel a few new ideas bubbling up!

Exploring the Back Roads of Lancaster County

Lancaster County has some of the prettiest back roads, especially The Valley of No Wires in Bird-in-Hand, and we couldn’t resist taking a few wrong turns to explore! At one point, we even stumbled upon a hot air balloon takeoff right from our hotel. There’s something so magical about watching those balloons lift into the sky, especially against the rich autumn colors. It felt like a scene from a story waiting to be written.

The Valley of no wires Lancaster's Hot Air Ballons A Trip Full of Heart

It was a sweet trip all around—one I’ll remember for a long time. Time with friends, time with readers, and time spent soaking in the simple joys of Amish country in the fall. If you’re looking for a cozy getaway with the charm of small-town markets and beautiful countryside, I’d say Lancaster in autumn is hard to beat!

An Amish Christmas Table

If you’re like me and can’t get enough of Lancaster’s cozy markets, you’ll love An Amish Christmas Table, my latest release. This collection includes four heartwarming Amish Christmas stories, each bringing something unique to the table. You’ll get a taste of Lancaster in Rachel J. Good’s story. Her story perfectly captures the sights, sounds, and spirit of Lancaster at Christmastime. All four stories invite you to slow down, breathe in the simplicity, and enjoy the little joys of the season.

A Visit to the Union Grove & Hamptonville, NC Amish Community

Union Grove in Yadkin County, North Carolina, is a unique Amish community that truly captivated me. It’s fascinating to see how this community, one of the most progressive types of Amish, embraces modern conveniences like rubber wheels, gas-powered tractors, lawn equipment, and even electricity from the public grid.

In 1985, some New Order Amish from Guthrie, Kentucky, settled along a small stretch of land by Interstate 77. For nearly 40 years, they’ve been thriving here. I loved seeing the variety of dress colors worn by the women, from dark green to blue and tan. The men’s brighter-colored shirts, like yellow, added a cheerful touch to their traditional attire.

Ruth's Amish Words of Faith Savannah's Amish Ties That Bind Allie's Amish Family Miracle Barbara’s Amish Truth Exposed Union Grove, NC Amish

Agriculture is at the heart of this community, with corn, tobacco, and dairy farming being key aspects of their way of life. This dedication to farming isn’t just a job—it’s a vital part of their culture and heritage.

Unlike other Amish areas where you can follow the buggy marks on the blacktop, the use of rubber wheels here makes it harder to find those telltale signs. But our journey through the back roads in the heart of summer was nothing short of delightful. The picturesque vineyards that dotted the landscape added a beautiful touch to our visit.

Union Grove is a close-knit community, with less than 200 members in a single church district. This small size fosters a strong sense of community and shared values, which was wonderful to witness.

Noteworthy Stops

Wholesome Country Creamery
This place is a gem! They offer all-natural, hormone-free Grade A cow milk, yogurt, and ice cream. Even though it was only 10:00 a.m., we couldn’t resist treating ourselves to some delicious ice cream and chocolate milk. Who says you can’t have dessert for breakfast?

Shiloh General Store

Shiloh General Store
I absolutely adore bulk food stores, and Shiloh General Store is no exception. Every visit ends with my basket full of goodies. This time, I picked up some popcorn, a new clothespin bag, and some apple-fried pies. The store also offers furniture and a deli with made-to-order sandwiches that are simply to die for.

Union Grove NC Amish

Amish Courtesy Greenhouse
As a plant lover, a visit to the greenhouse is a must. They were winding down for the summer, with their focus shifting to fall mums. I can only imagine how stunning the views will be when those mums are in full bloom.

Home Acres Fine Furniture

Home Acres Fine Furniture
This place was amazing! The yard was filled with lawn furniture in every size, shape, and color you could think of. The quality was exceptional. It’s probably a good thing my little car couldn’t carry a piece home, or I’d have been tempted to buy one!

Shiloh General Store Visiting the Union Grove and Hamptonville Amish community was a joy.

It’s a perfect blend of tradition and modernity, all set in the beautiful, rural North Carolina landscape. If you ever get the chance, it’s definitely worth exploring!

Greetings from Emma, Amish Scribe from Willow Springs

Dear Friends,

I hope this letter finds you well and enjoying the blessings of the season. Here in Willow Springs, we’re all abuzz with excitement for the upcoming Apple Butter Festival at the Apple Blossom Inn. The smell of apples cooking and the laughter of children running about will make for a wonderful time. I can almost taste that first spoonful of fresh apple butter already!

We have some new faces in our community that I’d love to tell you about. Lydia Troyer has returned to take over her father’s bookstore, bringing a sense of nostalgia and warmth. And Neal Zook has come back with his spirited wife Savannah from Charleston. Savannah’s quick wit and take-charge personality are a breath of fresh air here. It’s a reminder of how beautifully God weaves our paths together, even when we least expect it.

Speaking of surprises, I never imagined we’d see the day when Neal and Lydia would return to our fold. It just goes to show that the Lord’s plans are far greater than ours. Who are we to question His wisdom? I often remind myself that we just need to trust in His timing and stay out of His way.

The gardens in Willow Springs are overflowing with produce this year. The warm temperatures and plentiful rain have blessed us with bountiful harvests. My Mamm always said to preserve extra during the plentiful years for the lean ones. Her wise words echo in my heart, especially now that she’s gone to be with the Lord.

As the sun sets and the evening cools, I must go and rescue Samuel from the twins and get them ready for bed. Life is busy, but filled with so much love and joy. I wish you all the best as we share another year of stories, faith, and unexpected surprises through Tracy’s wonderful books.

Warm regards,

Emma Yoder

The Sweet Tradition of Amish Whoopie Pies

In the heart of Amish country, amidst rolling pastures and horse-drawn buggies, a delightful treat brings a touch of sweetness to everyday life: the Whoopie Pie. These treats are not just desserts; they are cultural artifacts deeply embedded in Amish tradition and shared joyfully among friends and family during gatherings and special occasions.

Origins and Cultural Significance

Whoopie Pies may seem like a simple dessert, but they hold a special place in Amish culinary tradition. Thought to have originated from leftover cake batter, these treats are a testament to the Amish ethos of simplicity and frugality. Legend has it that when children would find these treats in their lunch pails, they would shout “Whoopie!” in delight, hence the name.

What is a Whoopie Pie?

A Whoopie Pie looks like a cookie, eats like a cake, and tastes like a slice of heaven. It consists of two round, mound-shaped pieces of soft, moist cake – usually chocolate, but variations include pumpkin, red velvet, or oatmeal – sandwiching a creamy, fluffy filling. This filling is traditionally made from marshmallow fluff, butter, and powdered sugar, but some recipes call for a filling based on beaten egg whites or cream cheese.

A Modern Take on Whoopie Pies

Today, Whoopie Pies have transcended Amish boundaries and have been embraced by a broader audience, with bakeries and home cooks alike experimenting with different flavors and fillings. From adding peanut butter to the filling to using alternative cake ingredients like sweet potatoes, the possibilities are endless.

Whether enjoyed at a community gathering or savored as a treat after a long day, Whoopie Pies embody a sense of comfort and community that is central to Amish life. So, the next time you bite into a Whoopie Pie, remember that you’re not just enjoying a delicious treat; you’re partaking in a tradition that has brought smiles to faces for generations.
