Clothes and Character

I’m not an author who spends a lot of time on clothes in books unless they’re a reflection of character. If a character is a clothes horse (or a shoe fanatic) I’ll mention them, but the whole “She was wearing a cerise Armani and gold Jimmy Choos” bit always seems intrusive to me. But the thing is, clothes really do make the man character. This photo essay of classic statues in modern clothing is a great visual example: those white statues that seem so alien and inhuman now dressed in everyday clothing look like the guy next door. I still think that extensive description of clothing is disruptive, but I’m thinking more about how I use what characters wear now.

Antagonist Essay on SmartPop

An essay I wrote on antagonists a long time ago is posted on the SmartPop website until Monday; it’s from the Glee anthology and talks about Sue Sylvester as a great classic antag: “You Think This Is Hard? Try Being An Antagonist. That’s Hard: Why Sue Sylvester Is Essential to Glee.”

Next Who Sunday: Army of Ghosts/Doomsday, Russell T. Davies

Army_of_Ghosts

And it’s another save-the-world-and-break-your-heart two-parter. Another transition, keeping the show fluid. Plus more Jackie and Micky, always a good thing.

Who Sunday: The Girl in the Fireplace

Great mystery, horses in space, beautiful puppets, famous people in history, the Doctor gets kissed again, and one of the best entrances EVER. Definitely in the Top Five of Great Who Episodes.

WonderWoman Documentary Today Only

Okay, I haven’t watched this yet because I’m swamped here, but it’s only available until the end of today and by the time I do watch it, it’ll be too late to tell you all about it. I’ll be back later to see it and comment, but in the meantime, here’s Wonder Woman (with Stanley Tucci in the intro, too). Let me know what you think. Of Wonder Woman, not Stanley. Stanley rocks always.

ETA: Great documentary, including a lot of interesting stuff about women heroines in general. I hadn’t noticed that “year all the strong women died,” but I loved what they said about Buffy coming back from the dead and empowering all the slayers. I’d never seen that as a political statement in context with time. I forgive Joss the women of Firefly.

Next Who Sunday: The Girl in the Fireplace, Stephen Moffat

Usually I pick episodes because they illustrate something I want to talk about. This one is just excellent, beautiful writing from Moffat and stellar performances.

Also, fabulous Google Doodle in honor of Maurice Sendak who would have been 85 today.

Next Who Sunday: New Earth

This is an odd one, but it cements the transition for me. Cassandra‘s back–if you never watched “The End of the World,” the second episode in Season One, you missed Cassandra–and she’s still determined to survive no matter what. Rose has accepted the new Doctor, but in this story the viewer sees that the Doctor really does know Rose, no matter what happens. Also, lovely bit of character switching and the Face of Boe. I think this with “The Christmas Invasion” cements the transition. Well, this and the fact that Tennant is outstanding as the Doctor.
