Who Sunday: Asylum of the Daleks, Steven Moffat

I love Clara in this episode. After this, not so much. The last thing Doctor Who needed was a regenerative manic pixie dream girl with a mission. And now we’re stuck with her unless Twelve shoves her into a black hole. Oh, well, she’s great in this one.

Welcome to the extremely problematical third season of the Eleventh Doctor. The good news is that the first episode, “Asylum of the Daleks,” is pretty good. The bad news is . . . never mind. We can talk about that later. Although I find it hard to believe that Rory and Amy are getting a divorce (I hate those “If they just talked to each other” Big Misunderstandings), the rest of this nicely creepy fun with even the tragic ending fixed in later episodes. Also Daleks.

Who Sunday: The Wedding of River Song, Steven Moffat

There are many things to love about this episode, but the visuals are especially wonderful. Dirigibles and pterodactyls in modern London, the Silence imprisoned in fish tanks in the pyramids, rat-eating skulls . . . Moffat just dumped a big bag of impossibilities together and then let the Doctor sort it all out.

I’m sorry. This has been an awful week and it’s not getting better so I dropped the ball completely here, which is a shame because this is a great episode. The “all time is happening at once” stuff is marvelous, and so is the “love what you’ve done with the pyramids” and the final solution. Moffat at his best.

Moffat at his turn-this-story-around-and-make-it-new best, the “I was on my way to a gay Jewish bar mitzvah” line, and then there’s the whole tesselator thing: I love this episode.

Today is Make a Difference Day so I cleaned the bedroom. Huge difference.

Princeton Tomorrow, Comedy Tonight

I have to go make a speech in Princeton, so I’m trying to find my Serious Clothes, the ones I have to wear underwear with because tomorrow I will be in a serious place discussing serious things with serious people. Okay, not really, romance scholars are usually pretty laid back and lots of fun, they probably wouldn’t bat an eye if I showed up in my usual working clothes (pjs and bunny slippers), but I think I should make the effort. I got rid of most of my Serious Clothes when I left Ohio but I still have a couple of jackets and some dress pants and some dresses I might be able to convince people are speech clothes and not just sundresses with a jacket. I even have a pair of high-heeled bunny slippers, but I think that might be going too far. Definitely no hose, though, and no high heels. There’s a limit.

But this is also going to involve make-up, which always looks weird on me, and probably something with my hair. No matter how hard I try, I always look like somebody who just came in on the clown car because I am just not good at this stuff. So there will be much hilarity tonight as I try to figure out how to look like an adult before I get to Princeton. I like to blend in.

And just to remind you, that’s the Princeton Romance Author Symposium, Oct 24-25, in Betts Hall, starting at 5:30 tomorrow night (Oct. 24). Here’s the poster, one of which I must get:

Oh, and the Comedy Tonight? Krissie is coming to dog-sit and we haven’t seen each other in months. There will be much laughter, especially if I practice putting on make-up.
