Graduation by Guest Author Kate Christensen

katechristensencmarionettlinger We are so pleased to have Kate Christensen as our guest author today on the ball. Kate has a new book out, Trouble, and is the author of the novels In the Drink, Jeremy Thrane, The Epicure’s Lament, and The Great Man, winner of the 2008 PEN/Faulkner Award.

To my flattered shock, I was asked to be the graduation speaker this year at my old high school. Flattered because who wouldn’t be, shock because in high school I was a dreamy, hermit-like, tortured adolescent whose term reports often mentione

Today I Is A Author, by Deb Eve

img_2568 When someone first suggested we blog about graduation, I just assumed it was in keeping with all of those graduating from high schools and colleges around us. But duh …. only now do I realize that our reigning year as Debutantes will soon come to a close, and with one last regal wave of our gloved hands we’ll be graduate Debs and off to live the charmed lives of successful authors everywhere …. (INSERT SOUND OF SCREECHING BRAKES HERE).

Um … I don’t think so.

First of all, I can’t believe we’re g

Graduation Dip by Deb Tiffany

debauthorpic1Graduations, for me, are like falling into a pond with all your clothes on. One moment, you’re standing there on the dock all confident and accomplished, totally self-satisfied, and the next, whoops, you’re swimming around, completely confused, wondering what the hell just happened.

When I was pregnant with my second daughter, my first daughter was barely just a toddler, and I was admittedly a little lost at sea (to continue the water metaphor). A family friend took one look at me and told me, “D

And So We Begin… Again by Deb Meredith

posedformurderThis week is not only graduation week, but it is also the week of my birthday. And so I reflect on another year gone by…

This year has been incredibly eventful for me and for all the debs. We have all had to rise to the challenge of debuting our first book (just Kristina left to go—and I can’t wait to see her incredible success!). And at the end of August, we will “graduate,” hang up our tiaras and welcome a new class to the ball. It’s bittersweet, but it’s also a wonderful sign that we have o

The screeching brakes of hindsight, by Deb Katie

I went to film school in Tallahassee, Florida. Not exactly a hotbed of film industry activity. In fact, the film school was pretty self-aware about that. In order to give us a few months’ jump on all of the other matriculating film school students across the country, they assigned us an additional summer’s-worth of classes and kicked us out the door in December of what would be our senior year.

The not-yet-husb, of course, had even more ambitious plans for himself. Our school had an internship pr

In which Deb Kristina turns her tassel

kris_grad_smallHere I am, in 1996, minutes after graduating from Michigan State University. I’d been trying to find my family – this was before everyone had a cell phone to track each other down, we had to actually search – and when I spotted them, I came running and struck a pose: Ta da! I did it! That’s my soon-to-be husband, there, laughing at my goofball joy.

I look like something out of High School Musical: Senior Year.

I remember that moment so clearly. I’d finished my schooling at last, lined up a very go

A Tribute to Mum, my own Literary Maven by Guest Author Savannah Schroll Guz

american-soma-front-coverWe’re delighted to welcome Savannah Schroll Guz to the ball today. She is author of the short story collection, The Famous & The Anonymous (2004) and editor of the theme-based fiction anthology, Consumed: Women on Excess (2005). A new collection of fiction, American Soma, will be released by Oregon-based So New Publishing in late-May 2009.

It’s just after Mother’s Day, and once again, I wasn’t with my mother to observe it. However, this is not out of the ordinary.

For most of my adult life, I’v

Motherhood: The Big Boob, by Deb Eve

img_2568 One of my favorite photos from my time in Uganda is the one I can almost never show because apparently, it’s not wise for us author types to bare our breasts in public … or on the internet … or wherever. That seems to be a privilege reserved for Miss America contestants or Janet Jackson and the rest of us best keep our girls holstered.

But anyway, this picture is of me breastfeeding my infant daughter sitting right next to a Ugandan friend breastfeeding her infant daughter. It’s like a study in

Mother’s Day Bathtub Quiz by Deb Tiffany

debauthorpicMotherhood is possibly one of the world’s most frustrating endeavors. There’s no instruction manual. There’s conflicting advice and theories about everything from discipline to diet, and while you’re never sure you’re doing the right thing, the dread of screwing up your kids looms like the monsters they’re terrified of.

Well, fret not. Take the Motherhood Bathtub Quiz. Pour a glass of large red, wine, throw the kids at your significant other, lock the bathroom door, and take your pulse. At least
