Deb Sarah talks about the joys of writing… at Chuck E. Cheese
My workspace? Sometimes it's my minivan, when I'm parked outside school and I've got 15 minutes before the doors open and my kids come racing out, backpacks flying and sneakers pounding against the pavement. Sometimes it's in my bed, late at night, with my husband and black lab, Bella, snoring in harmony next to me. And sometimes I knock out a page or two at Chuck E. Cheese while kids screech at the antics of a giant mouse (who I think looks suspiciously like a rat).
It's not exactly how I...

Happiness is a portable computer, by Deb Emily
I got a laptop so I could hide from the baby.
My husband's job involves talking on the phone with the California office, which is eight hours behind us. So he works afternoons and evenings, and looks after our boys in the morning.
The boys have a great time, playing Lego and programming robots. (And a somewhat annoyed time practicing instruments and French pronuciation.) At the time we started using this schedule, our younger son was less than a year old. He loved spending time with his daddy a...

Bestselling author Lisa Tucker reveals the story behind her book
Lisa Tucker burst onto the publishing scene with a gorgeous debut, The Song Reader, and now her books are sold in twelve countries. Her fifth novel, The Promised World, published by Atria Books on Sept. 1, is also winning rave reviews. Booklist calls it "A masterfully told story that delves deep into the human psyche and examines the frailty of the human mind after a tragedy and the powerful, lifelong impact of childhood memories." But the story behind Lisa's novel is also compelling, and...

Deb Joelle and the last conversations of summer…
Labour Day is an adult holiday. The media tries to pass it off as a day of family fun, a time to celebrate the last freedoms of summer, but it's really all about adults having the day off from work and drinking beer starting at noon. If you're a kid, it's impossible to enjoy because there is a giant clock hanging over your head. It doesn't say, "Tick-tock, tick-tock." It says, "School-starts! School-starts!"
I was always an odd kid in that I actually loved school and could hardly wait, but...
Love the smell of Elmer's Glue in the morning…. By Deb Maria
Alright. I admit it. Glue sticks make me giddy –especially this year. Why? Here's the long and the short of it (although I never particularly understood that saying.. is it long or is it short??) either way I will explain. Experienced moms will laugh, new moms take notes. I mean it.
My husband and I agreed long ago to only have one child. We decided it would be a boy, and despite passing on the complicated sex-selection process, we got the little man we planned on. His name is Ethan. He is ...

Wait a sec – I'm not wearing pants! … by Deb Alicia
[image error] Every September, I dream (usually several nights in a row) that I must repeat high school. I get lost in a labyrinthine building and arrive late for class. Teacher castigates me; classmates snicker. Then, I realize I'm not wearing pants.
You don't have to be a Jungian analyst to surmise that I'm still working through some residual dread inspired by high school—math, chemistry, and gym classes, in particular.
College was different. No math, chemistry, or gym, and all the film, French, and...

Deb Sarah chats about Labor Day
When I hear the words "Labor Day," my first instinct is to scream "epidural!"
Oh, sorry – you meant the other kind of Labor Day?
I love Labor Day (the one unrelated to childbirth, I mean). This week, my two older boys head back to school, which means no more screams of "He bit me!" and no more burping contests at the lunch table (note to self: Maybe I should try feeding them more, so they don't cannibalize each other). No more loading myself up like a suburban Sherpa with towels, snacks...

This is your major, should you choose to accept it…by Deb Emily
I once heard a second-hand story about an undergrad at my friend's college who had married young, been widowed young, and was supported by her husband's estate so long as she was studying full-time at college. I can't say for sure I remember the details exactly right, or that the story was 100% true to begin with, but as I recall this was to be her third bachelor's degree. The first two were in theatre and business. Now she was studying horsemanship.
I would never wish grief on anyone. But at ...
