When Dad returned to Mayleeda, a couple of years ago, I thought I’d finally get to see him more. But things haven’t changed from the time I was a small kid and he fished for diamonds in Tushing’s atmosphere. He returns home every couple of months for two weeks, but during that time, he and Mum just argue.
It’s not like I have all the free time in the world, either. I’m busy studying computer programming at Hi-Tech. I’m just so pissed, though. For instance, Dad came back a couple of weeks ago, so I made gaps in my revision and study diary. I even showed him the gaps I’d made, and he wrote ‘Daddy-day,’ for the day of fire.
He took the twins out to an ice cream parlor on the day of the moon to ‘bond,’ as Mum would say. He said he’d take out the rest of us, individually, too. Sophia got to play hollo ball with him in the city, and he took Mei Mei to a fantastic seafood restaurant on the day of air. When the day of water came around, Dad’s friends—Aedre and Akachi—showed up out of the blue. He canceled everything he planned.
I was so mad, but I didn’t shout at him, because I love him so much and don’t ever want to lose him again.
I was nine when Tanmixan told us all dad had died. None of us knew it was all a big lie until he returned to us seven years later. I know I was just a kid when he fished for diamonds, but I remembered him well. He was so different when he came back to us—ruined. The fact Mum and Uncle Tao Tao had been sleeping together didn’t help.
Dad hasn’t even let us see Uncle Tao Tao, even though Jamie and Liang thought of him as a father when everyone believed Dad had died in that methane rig explosion on Tai.
Poor Dad. How can I be so mad at him when all I feel is pity when I look into his eyes? I know I shouldn’t say this, but what he really needs is a woman who’ll love him. Sure, Mum loves him, but she must hate him too for the way she acts. Things are so bad between them. Sometimes I wish they’d just get a divorce. They’re obviously not happy.
He’s not gone back to work for the secret service. I heard him and mum arguing in their bedroom last night. He’ll be fishing for diamonds in the gas giant again. I’m so scared. What if space pirates abduct him for a second time, and Tanmixan wipe his memory for good?
