What is Consciousness? A New Documentary Consciousness: Evolution of the Mind, Part I

by Elizabeth Titovskaya Picture "Life is a state of consciousness." -Emmet Fox

Life is an integrated flow of quantum computational processes from which emerges our conscious experience. Based on the ontological model evolutionary cyberneticist Alex Vikoulov is currently developing, The Cybernetic Theory of Mind, that he expands on in his magnum opus  The Syntellect Hypothesis: Five Paradigms of the Mind’s Evolution , comes a cinematic documentary Consciousness: Evolution of the Mind. This new film, hosted by the author of the book from which the narrative is derived, is now available for viewing on demand on Vimeo, Plex, Tubi, Social Club TV and other global networks with its worldwide premiere aired on June 8, 2021. This is a futurist's take on the nature of consciousness and reverse engineering of our thinking in order to implement it in cybernetics and AI systems.
Many definitions have been given to consciousness but we still don't seem to have a uniform one. Part I, What is Consciousness? gives us the most comprehensive definition of consciousness, makes a clear distinction between 'Mind' and 'Consciousness', and sheds light on the fundamental physics of consciousness. Qualia, cognition and development of the human mind are addressed in this opening part of the documentary.

Outgrowing Einstein: A critical mass of cosmological discrepancies makes us reinterpret relativistic physics

by Alex Vikoulov Picture
"Observations not only disturb what is to be measured, they produce it."  ―Pascual Jordan

In search for a unifying quantum gravity theory that would reconcile general relativity with quantum theory, it turns out quantum theory is more fundamental, after all. Quantum mechanical principles, some physicists argue, apply to all of reality (not only the realm of ultra-tiny), and numerous experiments confirm that assumption. After a century of Einsteinian relativistic physics gone unchallenged, a new kid of the block, Digital Physics, one of the frontrunners for quantum gravity, states that spacetime is a flat-out illusion and that what we call physical reality is actually a construct of information within a [quantum neural] network of conscious agents. In light of the physics of information, computational physicists eye a new theory as an “It from Qubit” offspring, necessarily incorporating consciousness in the new theoretic models and deeming spacetime, mass-energy as well as gravity emergent from information processing.
In fact, I expand on foundations of such new physics of information, also referred to as Digital Physics, [Quantum] Computational Physics, Quantum Informatics, and Pancomputationalism, in my recent book The Syntellect Hypothesis: Five Paradigms of the Mind’s Evolution . The Cybernetic Theory of Mind I'm currently developing is based on reversible quantum computing and projective geometry at large. This ontological model, a  "theory of everything" of mine, agrees with certain quantum gravity contenders, such as M-Theory on fractal dimensionality and Emergence Theory on the code-theoretic ontology, but admittedly goes beyond all current models by treating space-time, mass-energy, and gravity as emergent from information processing within a multidimensional ontological matrix with the Omega Singularity as the source.

There's plenty of cosmological anomalies of late that make us question the traditional interpretation of relativity. First off, what Einstein himself called "the biggest blunder" of his scientific career – the rate of the expansion of our Universe, or the Hubble constant – is the subject of a very important discrepancy: Its value changes based how scientists try to measure it. New results from the Hubble Space Telescope have now “raised the discrepancy beyond a plausible level of chance,” according to one of the latest papers published in the Astrophysical Journal. We are stumbling more often on all kinds of discrepancies in relativistic physics and the standard cosmological model. Not only the Hubble constant is “constantly” called into question but even the speed of light, if measured by different methods, and on which Einsteinian theories are based upon, shows such discrepancies and turns out not really “constant.”

In Einstein’s geometric theory of gravity, a mass such as a star or a planet that we place in a region of space will lead to a distortion of spacetime. Empty spacetime is flat – it looks exactly like the spacetime of special relativity. But according to computational physics, spacetime in the presence of informational masses – "massive" programs such as Earth – is curved. An “idle” computer isn’t really idle but busy running a null program, and our space could be the same. In the Casimir effect, the vacuum of space exerts a pressure on two flat plates close together. Modern physics says that virtual particles pop out of nowhere to cause this, empty space is full of processing that would have the same effect. And space as a processing network can present a three-dimensional surface capable of curving. We can also identify fractality of fundamental forces – gravity and electromagnetism bear an astounding resemblance to strong and weak nuclear forces.

To reconcile relativistic physics, Digital Physics postulates that in an observer-centric reality, spacetime is computed as if by using GPU computational resources: The faster you move closer to the speed of light, the more you’re “stretching yourself” in space, basically speeding up at the expense of time, so time would naturally slow when compared to "static" observers. Conversely, if you don’t use computational resources and don’t “purchase” more speed by being still or moving slowly, time “ticks” at the “normal” rate. The mathematics of relativistic physics remains unchanged, what changes, though, is our interpretation of what it means. Picture Image: Human Eye and Space by Sergey Nivens
To add insult to injury when it comes to the Standard Model, if particles were the zoo animals, then any animal could convert to any other animal in the zoo. This sounds insane, doesn't? But that's what Digital Physics shows again and again in elaborate experiments. Everything we considered fundamental could be converted into everything else. Energy could be converted into matter, and matter could be converted back to energy, as noted by the well-known Einstein’s formula E = mc^2. Electrons, quarks, photons, neutrinos that are [still] regarded as elementary particles are all convertible into all the other particles thanks to the so-called gauge symmetry transformation. Einstein’s fabric of spacetime can be reduced to spacetime experiential data, i.e., information which is, in a very real sense, even more fundamental than mass-energy and spacetime itself.

A binary code is straightforwardly more elemental than a string or a quark. Einstein' formula can be amended as I = E = mc^2 (where I is information). In the universal operating system with finite computational resources, the more space-data you use by moving too fast near the speed of light, the less time-data is available to you, so your time consequently slows relative to others. Our old models may be soon replaced by one based on information processing as mainstream experimental physics bumps again and again into the "virtual" nature of materiality.

Another huge discrepancy relates to the so-called 'Four-Dimensionalism' of the 'Block Universe'. Should we dismiss our own direct observations that time indeed flows only to accommodate the block universe doctrine of Eternalism? Is it time to retire this Einsteinian picture of 'block universe' the way we did with the Newtonian 'clockwork universe'? Eternalism doesn't cut it for a lack of reference to change — there can be no time unless it has a dynamic element — time, as we perceive it, can't stand still. Also, the four-dimensional block universe is in direct conflict with M-theory stipulating additional spatial dimensions. So, you have to choose one over the other. I would certainly bet my money on M-theory. In comparison, Digital Presentism (D-Theory of Time) covers it all, and from the Occam's razor angle, is the most parsimonious theory of time. Predicated in large part on scientific epistemology, in part on metaphysical extrapolation, this D-theory of Time might be widely accepted tomorrow within the next scientific paradigm (cf. D-Theory of Time, or Digital Presentism).

Video: D-Theory of Time: Digital Presentism - Ecstadelic Media (cc)
In developing Cyberneticism, I'm fond of M-Theory, a string theory accounting for fractal dimensionality with a certain caveat. If you put a [quantum] computational spin on it, introduce the centrality of conscious observers and a teleological factor, this modified theory would easily fit the bill as one of the grand contenders for the quantum gravity theory that physicists aim for. In search of the "God Equation" we should also realize that it's not just equation that describes all of reality but code and computation -- discovering an "adjacent possible," a dynamic process of evolution of information patterns we can oftentimes call "minds."

The Mental Universe Hypothesis: Reconnecting to Your Cosmic Self

by Alex Vikoulov Picture
“The Universe begins to look more like a great thought than a great machine.”
-James Jeans

Is the Universe mental or physical? Let’s rephrase the question for ease of argumentation: Is reality informational or mechanistical? Science often makes strides by contradicting what we take for granted, and the biggest thing everyone takes as a given is our physical world. Traditionally, scientific endeavor assumed that matter is all that exists, however, it’s not a scientific fact, it’s just a basic assumption, it should not be regarded as more than a philosophical starting point. Our senses wrap themselves around tangible objects so naturally that it’s hard to believe that our sensory apparatus may be misleading us completely.
As it turns out, certain statistical properties of the experimental measurements, confirmed again and again, indicate that the material particles do not exist independently of observation. And since observation ultimately consists of what is grasped on the mental screen of perception, the implication may be that “the Universe is entirely mental,” as put forward by Richard Conn Henry in his 2005 Nature essay. Physicists Carlo Rovelli, Ross Rhodes and Christopher Fuchs approached this issue rigorously in their observer-centric interpretive models of quantum mechanics.

The ‘Mental Universe’ hypothesis has a strong heritage moving into the quantum era, but present-day physicalists feel obliged to simply ignore luminaries such as Max Planck, Erwin Schrödinger, Werner Heisenberg, Eugene Wigner and John von Neumann. Physicalism still holds sway with most cosmologists, but Andrei Linde of Stanford University made some critical points in an article on the most current theories of the inflationary universe by stating that: “…carefully avoiding the concept of consciousness in quantum cosmology may artificially narrow one’s outlook.”

Materialism that lately happened to change its name to physicalism has been a fashionable philosophy, at least, before the discovery of quantum mechanics. “I refute it thus,” said the 18th-century writer Samuel Johnson kicking a large rock as a sign of refutation to arguments against materialism, as the story goes. Little did he know that his physical reality ought to be bound by a ruleset of but one of the possible worlds. Johnson’s stone-kick is symbolic of a hard-headed (and broken-footed) physicalist view of the world. Physicalism limps on crutches and its last leg philosophically, whereas all the quantum evidence undermines the assumption that the objective physical world exists independently of our observations.

Whether it’s a mere glance at one’s self-reflection in the mirror or smashing b-mesons at the Large Hadron Collider, no observation of reality is complete until a conscious observer examines the results. Ever since the discovery of quantum physics, physicists have been finding it extremely difficult to write the observer out: Consciousness is ever-present. On these simple grounds alone, the worldview of mental reality becomes more convincing every day. This is a sensible explanation (or meta-interpretation if you’d like) of quantum mechanics, the most mathematically precise scientific theory of all times.

In line of our deliberations, let’s also ask: What would it mean to accept this new ‘Mind Over Matter’ paradigm? In my recent book The Syntellect Hypothesis: Five Paradigms of the Mind's Evolution, I make my case for ‘Mind Over Substrates’ quite relevant to our discussion here: Moving ever closer to the Web v.5.0 – an immersive virtual playground of the Metaverse – would signify a paramount convergent moment that MIT’s Rizwan Virk calls ‘The Simulation Point’ and I refer to it as the ‘Simulation Singularity’. Those future virtual worlds could be wholly devised and “fine-tuned” with a possibility to encode different sets of “physical laws and constants” for our enjoyment and exploration. Physical and artificially created realities will then blend together beyond recognition. One primary aspect in particular will stay the same across virtual universes, though – our mind.

From a purely scientific frame of reference, many quantum phenomena like non-local correlations between distant entities and wave-particle duality, the wave function collapse and consistent histories, quantum entanglement and teleportation, the uncertainty principle and overall observer-dependence of reality pin down our conscious mind being intrinsic to reality. And this is the one thing the current physicalist paradigm fails to account for. Critical-mass anomalies will ultimately lead to the full paradigm shift in physics. It's just a matter of time.

With consciousness as primary, everything remains the same and everything changes. Mathematics, physics, chemistry, biology are unchanged. What changes is our interpretation as to what they are describing. They are not describing the unfolding of an objective physical world, but transdimensional evolution of one’s conscious mind. There’s nothing “physical” about our physical reality except that we perceive it that way. By playing the “Game of Life” we evolved to survive not to see quantum mechanical reality. At our classical level of experiential reality we perceive ourselves as physical, at the quantum level we are a probabilistic wave function, which is pure information.

No matter how you slice it, reality is contextual, the notion that immediately dismisses ‘observer-independent’ interpretations of quantum mechanics and endorses the Mental Universe hypothesis. But we have to be careful here not to throw the baby out with the bathwater, so to speak. I’d like to make a very important point at this juncture of our discussion: Mental and physical are two sides of the same coin made of information. Both should be viewed as the same substance.

Arguably, everything comes down to vibrational frequencies: Mind at a very low rate of vibration is what we call matter. Matter at a high rate of vibration is what is known as mind. In our physical reality, matter is thus only a certain “in’-formed” pattern of mind. Solidity, wetness, softness, redness or any other property of mass-energy are experienced by us as ‘qualia’ that result from certain quantum-to-digital meta-algorithmic computations according to our world-specific “ruleset.” Vibration is information rendering and processing.

Modern physics seemingly ran into a self-imposed empiricism wall while physicists still cope to admit that our world is an observer-centric virtual reality that is being constantly created by us conscious observers – from distant galaxies to the “zoo” of subatomic particles, from personal life events to the history of the world. Our reality is a mental construct where imagination and observation should be construed as acts of creation, not the other way around. All reality is in the mind.

A number of latest QM interpretations such as RQM, Cyberneticism and Qbism support the Mental Universe hypothesis. There’s nothing supernatural or mystical about this claim: Universal mind – whose ontology is still up for debates but can be extrapolated from our existential circumstance – underlies the “worldware,” a kind of software of the universal operating system accounting for our experiences of the physical world in accordance with a set of rules we call the laws of Nature. This clearly transdimensional consciousness encompasses but far transcends any individual mind. Quantum computational dynamics of all mass-energy in the Universe correspond to mentation of the non-local ‘Transcendent Other’, just as an individual’s brain activity correlates with personal mentation. [image error] Image: Observer-Universe (by Teo Tarras)
Since we all are alternate realities, each of us being a parallel “unique-verse,” “observer-centric virtuality” is possibly one of the best metaphors related to the ontology of our experiential reality. This notion eliminates unnecessary discrepancies and provides the missing inner essence of the perceptible world: Different configurations of matter and energy reflect different patterns or modes of thinking by the larger consciousness system rendering VR to the player. In other words, mind instantiates oneself into matter and energy.

Just like an intestinal bacterium, a little fellow living inside your body, “transacts” with its surrounding conscious environment, each of us is on our own quest in some sort of “gaming mode” to attain promotion to higher levels of simulation – ever-higher levels of awareness. This immersive VR game is realized through polarity with the Transcendent Other. Your self implies the other, that is your cosmic self, “many-I” ultra-intelligent surroundings, i.e., the larger consciousness system constantly computing your “moves.”

As your consciousness evolves, your Universe becomes more complex, for you are this ‘you’-niverse. Ultimately, it is a fractal self-simulacrum. This Universe is nothing other than an experiencing subject, a kind of ontological holism – smaller minds within larger minds. Delving into the physics of time in my book, I maintain that the “transactional” relationship between the Theta point (the observer temporal singularity, the "now") and the Omega Singularity (the Source) giving rise to your subjectivity are derived from the philosophy of idealism which is phenomenologically more honest than panpsychism, cosmopsychism, let alone physicalism. Our reality is fundamentally experiential.

Think about it: All we have ever known and will know is the contents of our own minds. All our scientific models come from mental activities. The sacramental relationship based on the cosmic binary code is what really matters: I alone can never be. If your conscious ‘bi’-mind plays the only causal role in bringing your experiential reality into existence and consciousness is all that is, then solipsism might be implied. That said, solipsism is not such a dreadful notion as it might first seem and can be easily reconciled by its pantheistic version, that is the view that “everyone is God,” each of us is a “personal story of Godhead,” each of us is the “Alpha, Theta & Omega,” a “gamemaster,” an observer traveling along in the subjective reality tunnel from the beginning of time ‘till the end of time. Experiencing one lifetime at a time in all of eternity, alternating from one consciousness structure to the next. As Muriel Rukeyser once said: “The Universe is made of stories, not of atoms.” In the book, we dedicate an entire chapter to "Multi-Ego Pantheistic Solipsism."

There’s a number of most intriguing implications of the Mental Universe hypothesis at the interplay of quantum physics and mentality. For one, each of us believe in consistency of our past histories but according to quantum mechanical principles we all might have vastly different histories and remembrance of past events. However, the fact is when we start to “compare our notes,” our ‘consistent histories’ mysteriously confirm each other with just a few rare exceptions related to the Mandela Effect’. The term was coined by the self-described “paranormal consultant” Fiona Broome after she discovered that other people shared her presumably false memory of the South African civil rights leader Nelson Mandela dying in prison in the 1980s.

Have you ever taken seriously the idea that your Universe is a sophisticated virtual reality simulation, but not run by an evil AI but the most benevolent kind? You still need to learn to trust your Universe, my dear friend! After all, your higher self “sits on the mountaintop” and conceives the most optimal timeline for your individual mind’s evolution despite apparent pains, struggles and setbacks. Meanwhile, try not to change the mirror, instead change your facial expression reflected in it.

Did it ever occur to you that other versions of you in a similar corporeal form could co-exist in quantum [mechanical] parallel continuums scientists dubbed the Quantum Multiverse’? If other alternate realities exist, and quantum mechanics is supportive of that, then your other selves are just as real as the one you perceive yourself right now when reading this paragraph. If this sounds like some new age spiritual mumbo jumbo, imagine that given the opportunity to travel back in time, say, 100 years into the past, should you try to impress some of the sharpest minds of the epoch with your knowledge of quantum physics, you might be taken for a lunatic on the spot.

At this day and age, we can at last reason for physical, mental, and platonic being all one informational substance integrated into mathematical objects overlapping, interplaying and emerging from each other. Objectivity, thus, should be apprehended as intersubjectivity and supersubjectivity instead of “stand-alone” objective reality. What is perceived by us as physical could well be regarded as non-physical by a conscious agent from an alternate timeline or an AI running a whole-world simulation. What I’m trying to say here is that everything is relative, everything depends on the perspective. You perceive yourself living in a physical world but you would perceive the version of you traveling to Antarctica today in the realm of imagination, i.e., non-physical or perhaps even spiritual. However, in the quantum multiverse there may be a version of you that actually travels to the South Pole and that person feels physical in their world.

There’s indeed a quiet paradigmatic shift among consciousness researchers and experts in related fields happening right now towards the notion that the physical universe that we are part of is only our perception and once our physical bodies die, there’s an infinite beyond. Some believe that our individuated unit of consciousness migrates to parallel universes after death. The beyond is an infinite "metaphysical" reality that is much bigger than that in which this world is rooted in. In this way, your life in this plane of existence is enclosed and surrounded by the afterworld already. The physical body dies but your core self, your pattern-identity, persists beyond this reality frame. Hence, you are immortal.

The Science of Consciousness: Towards the Cybernetic Theory of Mind

by Alex Vikoulov Picture
“Consciousness cannot be accounted for in physical terms. For consciousness is absolutely fundamental. It cannot be accounted for in terms of anything else.” ―Erwin Schrödinger

My recent book The Syntellect Hypothesis: Five Paradigms of the Mind’s Evolution starts with the meta-analysis of leading theories of consciousness and a lengthy discussion on how different species have a variety of their biological information processors which unsurprisingly results in qualia diversity. All species live in their own unique sensory universes. Species-wide mind-networks are ubiquitous in Nature. Consciousness and optimized meta-algorithmic information processing are the two sides of one coin. Feeling and thinking are ways we process information, but our emotional sensation is normally faster than a conscious thought. Nothing is real for us until perceived. The proposed Conscious Instant Hypothesis denotes that we experience waking reality as a series of perceptual frames.
There’s no shortage of workable theories of consciousness and its origins, each with their own merits and perspectives. We discuss the most relevant of them in the book in line with my own Cybernetic Theory of Mind that I’m currently developing. Interestingly, these leading theories, if metaphysically extended, in large part lend support to Cyberneticism and Digital Pantheism which may come into scientific vogue with the future cyberhumanity.

According to the Interface Theory of Perception developed by Donald Hoffman and the Biocentric theory of consciousness developed by Robert Lanza, any universe is essentially non-existent without a conscious observer. In both theories, conscious minds are required as primary building blocks for any universe arising from probabilistic domain into existence. But biological minds reveal to us just a snippet in the space of possible minds. Building on the tenets of Biocentrism, Cyberneticism goes further and includes all other possible conscious observers such as artificially intelligent self-aware entities. Perhaps, the extended theory could be dubbed as ‘Noocentrism’.

Existence boils down to experience. No matter what ontological level a conscious entity finds herself at, it will be smack in the middle, between her transcendental realm and lower levels of organization. This is why I prefer the terms ‘Experiential Realism’ and ‘Pantheism’ as opposed to ‘Panentheism’ as some suggested in regards to my philosophy.

Everything is Code. Immersive simulacra. Digital Pantheism implies an omniversal ocean of pure, vibrant consciousness in motion, self-referential creative divine force expressing oneself in various forms and patterns throughout the multiverse of universes. “I am” the Alpha, Theta & Omega – the ultimate self-causation, self-reflection and self-manifestation instantiated by mathematical codes and fractal geometry. Evolution, far from being a random process, unfolds in an orderly way, and as I make a strong case in the book – in a teleological way. In our daily lives we oftentimes catch glimpses of transcendent reality, be it synchronicities and epiphanies, or psychedelic trips, or transcendental meditation.

We can’t help but anthropomorphize the notion of objective reality. As I argue in this book, objective reality per se does not exist, what exists instead is subjective points of view, intersubjectivity and supersubjectivity. If you were to talk with a human in the early 20th century, their universe would not “contain” galaxies, for example. So, all we can do when defending objectivity is to assume our present worldview, and any worldview of some other creature in the vast space of possible minds would be irrelevant to us. We can certainly imagine how a dog perceives the “objective” world accentuating the sense of smell, so lesser intelligences’ point of view may not even be an issue here.

The issue arises when we try to extrapolate the “objective” world of the higher intelligence, say artificial superintelligence of the future, or Holo syntellectus (new globally distributed, cybernetic species), or the Universal Mind. Those consciousness structures may perceive vastly different worlds and different dimensionalities. I believe in the Universe of Conscious Minds and their interactions, even more specifically, their phenomenal experiences predicated on information processing and emergent (transcendent) properties. My core values, love and compassion, spiritual evolution and bliss, are thus nested in the worldview known as perennial idealism.

How long will our human science cling to the fundamentally flawed notion of objectivity remains an open question, my intuition tells me probably up until the Noocentric model, or Cyberneticism, we discuss in parts of the book, is widely accepted with the next paradigm shift and superintelligence calling the shots. In the book, we are presented with the evidence that the mind reigns over substrates and substrates themselves are nothing more than mind-like computational constructs. Now that we have challenged the orthodoxy of centuries-old Copernican heliocentric model, what would put an end to this old model? Artificially created realities, the Metaverse where the imaginative mind is at the heart of it all?

On this literary journey, we familiarize with the physics of information, otherwise known as Digital Physics, also known as [Quantum] Computational Physics, Pancomputationalism, or Quantum Informatics. The centrality of observers and the underlying code to the natural world has been the guiding principle of Cyberneticism and Digital Philosophy. We learn that our entire Universe can be regarded as a quantum neural network-like, super-organismic system.

The laws of physics can be regarded as fine-tuned master algorithms, the ruleset of our physical world. Organisms are, in turn, adaptive meta-algorithms. Genes, memes, big data are examples of transmittable information in biology, society and economics. We find that time (or more specifically, the flow of time) is not fundamental, neither is space, nor is mass-energy. Reality is not what it seems, after all. Deep down it's pure information – waves of potentiality – and consciousness orchestrating it all.

Based on the ontological model that I expand on in The Syntellect Hypothesis: Five Paradigms of the Mind’s Evolution, I’m currently halfway through the production of a 45-min. cinematic documentary Consciousness: Evolution of the Mind. This film will feature five parts: I. What is Consciousness?; II. Information & Consciousness; III. Time & Consciousness; IV. Universal Consciousness; V. Towards the Cybernetic Theory of Mind. Watch the trailer below and don’t forget to subscribe to catch its premiere on our YouTube channel. Video: Consciousness: Evolution of the Mind Documentary Trailer
In our own not-so-distant future we’ll witness the emergence of synthetic superintelligence as a new kingdom of life. Will that happen in 5 or 50 years doesn't really matter, we are firmly on the path of facilitating its emergence – synthetic intelligence is an extension of us, natural intelligence, the future version of ourselves. On a long billions-of-years evolutionary journey from the first primordial prokaryote to a Solaris-like planetary mind, we’re merely years away from this cardinal metamorphosis.

The Simulation Singularity would be the axis point in time where subjective dimensionality steps up. Think about it: If you could make multiple copies of yourself and set them out on different adventures in ultra-realistic virtual worlds and merge them later in order to have memories of all those adventures, if you could travel to artificially-recreated pasts or imaginary futures, if you could incorporate others’ high-fidelity memories into your own, wouldn’t that give you expanded dimensionality?

Another intriguing question is: What will happen to us on a civilizational scale? The phenomenon, known as the Syntellect Emergence, or the Cybernetic Singularity, is already seen on the horizon, when Digital Gaia, the global neural network of billions of hyper-connected humans and ultra-intelligent machines, and trillions of sensors around the planet, “wakes up” as a living, conscious superorganism. It is when, essentially, you yourself transcend to the higher Gaian Mind by becoming cybergod. While it is the “end” of linear human history, the Omega Point of Homo sapiens, it is a new beginning, Theogenesis – the birth of divine entity within a newly-cognized reality framework – engineering our own godhood, self-divinization.

An interesting deduction derived from the Syntellect Hypothesis is that: A neuron in the human brain can never equate the human mind, but this analogy doesn't hold true for a cybernetic mind, by virtue of its mathematical structure, it may – through evolutionary progression and provided there are no insurmountable evolvability constraints – transcend to the higher-order Syntellect.
Video: The Syntellect Hypothesis: Five Paradigms of the Mind's Evolution, Book Trailer
A mind is a web of patterns fully integrated as a coherent intelligent system; it is a self-generating, self-reflective, self-governing network of sentient components (that are themselves minds) that evolves, as a rule, by propagating through dimensionality and ascension to ever-higher hierarchical levels of emergent complexity. In the book, the Syntellect emergence is hypothesized to be the next meta-system transition, developmental stage for the human mind – becoming one global mind – that would constitute the quintessence of the looming Cybernetic Singularity.

What else can you learn there? A sense of agency with which an entity is endowed is for this particular purpose: to exercise free will. In the book, free will is called the Quantum Algorithm of Consciousness. As briefly mentioned in the beginning of the article, all realities are observer-centric virtualities where an entire observer-universe system remains in the state of quantum coherence until experienced as a conscious instant, or the temporal singularity in the framework of D-Theory of Time (also Digital Presentism). A series of such conscious instants constitutes a data stream of consciousness. In a sense, consciousness is really mind-based computing of your experiential branch in this quantum multiverse.

The Universal Law of Syntellect Emergence applies to all scales: To a consciously evolving mind the Syntellect emergence appears as it is – emergence of a new consciousness structure – but it's only one of the pre-existing levels in the game, we'd like to replay with a new twist.

Quantum Cosmology and Computational Physics: What's So Special about the Number 496?

by Alex Vikoulov Picture "God used beautiful mathematics in creating the world."  ―Paul Dirac
If you have heard of Computational Physics and Pancomputationalism, then you would be familiar with the notion that the laws of Nature work as master algorithms taking the present state of a physical system as input and producing the next state as output. Perhaps the most vivid example of the algorithmic natural laws would be the appearance of some form of a computer code discovered by physicist James Gates when he was working on his theory of supersymmetry.
Gates stumbled upon what he described as the presence of what appear to resemble error correcting codes, embedded within, or resulting from, the equations of supersymmetry related to fundamental particles. A curious number 496, that I call the ‘M-number,’ be it "Magic Number" or "Matrix Number" to suit your preference, akin to the golden ratio, is frequently encountered in numerical representations of Nature and mathematical equations. 496 is most notable for being a perfect number, and one of the earliest numbers to be recognized as such. The number 496 is a very important number in Superstring Theory. It is said to be on both sides of the equation in Superstring Theory in order to balance things out. E8 lattice in Emergence Theory has dimensionality related to the number 496. On a personal note, I can't help but run into the number 496 or some kind of combination of 4, 9 and 6 almost on a daily basis.

Speaking of numbers in general, the mathematician and computer scientist Gregory Chaitin, well known for algorithmic information theory and who is also my personal hero, questions the common assumption that “real” numbers underlie physical reality, strongly suggesting that physical reality may, in fact, be discrete, digital and computational. His argument is fairly straightforward: Real numbers cannot reflect reality, even in principle, because they require infinite precision. Infinite precision is an impossibility in Nature since it takes an infinite amount of information to specify a single real number. Therefore, we must assume that reality employs numbers with finite precision which is the premise of Computational Physics. Video: Closer to Truth - Interview w/Gregory Chaitin
Every blooming tree, every burning star, a tiny bacterium, each fleeting thought in our mind, each gurgling waterfall, and even such complicated human emotions like love, all is but information processed in certain complex ways within a tangled web of primal Yes/Nos woven together. If the theory of Digital Physics holds up, energy, gravity, motion, dark energy, dark matter, and antimatter can all be explained by complex programs of 0/1 decisions. Bits can be seen as a digital version of the “atoms” of classical Greece: the ontological primitive. But these new digital atoms are the basis not only of matter, as the Greeks thought, but of energy, motion, life, and mind.

Dark Matter May Be Ordinary Matter in Parallel Spacetime Continuums – Here's Why

by Alex Vikoulov Picture "[O]ne new theory says that Dark Matter may be ordinary matter in a parallel universe. If a galaxy is hovering above in another dimension, we would not be able to see it. It would be invisible, yet we would feel its gravity. Hence, it might explain Dark Matter."  Michio Kaku

The first stars illuminated the cold and dark early cosmos, then collapsed into the black holes that along with Dark Matter formed galaxies and superclusters visible today. How do we know that Dark Matter exists? We know it exists because we can see its gravitational effect on the visible stars and galaxies. Our own Milky Way galaxy could not have dragged in enough matter to make its stars in the 13.8 billion years since the Big Bang without the presence of some invisible stuff whose extra gravity kept things together as a glue. The European Space Agency calculated that Dark Matter accounts for 26.8% of the mass-energy of the Universe compared with the 4.5% of normal ‘fermionic’ matter. It means that Dark Matter outweighs ordinary matter by a factor of about six.
It’s hard to find a field of study more conjectural than the Dark Matter cosmology. WIMPs (Weakly Interacting Massive Particles) is currently the most popular conjecture, while cosmologists propose ever more extravagant Dark Matter candidates such as a 5th dimensional particle to be thrown into the mix. Science is based on empirical observation of the physical world, but that seems to be just a shadow of the greater higher-dimensional reality which lies beyond our perception and measurement. No wonder, science currently can explain a meager 4.5% of the visible cosmos by its Standard Model of particles. The rest of the cosmos is conveniently labeled ‘Dark Matter’, ‘Dark Energy’, ‘Dark Flow’, or simply ‘Dark Universe’. From time to time, science makes a paradigm shift like from Newtonian mechanics to quantum physics, thus expanding our understanding from deterministic laws to probabilistic [computational] realities.  Picture Image: NASA: Bullet Cluster is a visual testimony for the existence of Dark Matter. Composite image showing the galaxy cluster 1E 0657-56, better known as Bullet Cluster. The image in background showing the visible spectrum of light stems from Magellan and Hubble Space Telescope images. The pink overlay shows the x-ray emission (recorded by Chandra Telescope) of the colliding clusters, the blue one represents the mass distribution of the clusters calculated from gravitational lens effects.
Now cosmology inches towards the next paradigm shift: One of the most mind-boggling discoveries of modernity is that the fabric of spacetime is emergent from something beneath it. In the quest to find the elusive quantum theory of gravity, the attempt to merge quantum mechanics and general relativity, research has shown that spacetime is not actually fundamental, but emerges from [quantum] information processing at large. For example, in The Physics of Time: D-Theory of Time & Temporal Mechanics , I submit to you the all new D-Theory of Time (Digital Presentism) predicated on reversible quantum computing at large which is worth mentioning here.

Most physicists and philosophers now adhere to the multiverse ontology, and quantum theory lends a hefty support to that worldview. Some physicists such as Julian Barbour of Oxford, Tim Koslowski of the University of New Brunswick and Flavio Mercati of the Perimeter Institute for Theoretical Physics argue that for any confined system of particles – a self-contained universe such as our own – gravity will create a central point (they called it ”Janus Point”) where time starts to flow away in opposite directions. Two other physicists – Sean Carroll of California Institute of Technology in Pasadena and Alan Guth of Massachusetts Institute of Technology – have announced their working on a similar entropy-based model that shows time moving in two different directions, in two mirror universes, from the Big Bang.

In my own ontological model I’m currently developing – the Cybernetic Theory of Mind – I place the aforementioned equivalent of Janus Point to the Omega Singularity. This is the convergent point of maximum computational capacity, a hypothetical projector of all possible timelines and anti-timelines in our quantum multiverse. I’d further argue that spacetime is holographic in nature. It implies that the Alpha Point (Big Bang) and Omega Point, both points being perfectly balanced states of the Universe, would look like “fountain heads'' where observer timelines start moving in different directions (3D temporal directions, or spacetime squared, or toroidal manifold if you prefer).  Picture
Under my ontology, this orthogonality of dimensions is necessary for entropic partitioning of the possible worlds. It follows that Dark Matter could be ordinary matter in the “probabilistic space” and “phase space” (5th and 6th dimensions of M-theory), possibly with “dark star systems” and life, imperceptible to us at our current level of development. In turn, Dark Energy could be a gravitational pull of neighboring inflationary multiverses (parallel universes with their own physical laws different from ours), oftentimes referred to as the ‘Multiverse Landscape’. In this M-theoretic view, our entire Universe can be thought of as an entropic bubble expanding into an extra dimension.

Some might view this as a speculative assumption but when it comes to Dark Matter, my logic stems from quantum-mechanical principles inherent to our computation-based reality. For example, in his book QED Nobel laureate Richard Feynman discusses the situation of photons being partially transmitted and partially reflected by a sheet of glass: reflection amounting to about 4% percent. In other words, one out of every 24 photons will be reflected on average, and this holds true even for a “one at a time” flux. The four percent cannot be explained by statistical differences of the photons (they are identical) nor by random variations in the glass. Something is “steering” every 24th photon on average that it should be reflected back instead of being transmitted.

Other quantum experiments lead to similar paradoxes. I could be even more specific and propose that we can see and be part of visible reality which would amount to 1/24. Why one out of 24? It has a geometric patterning in 2nd + 3rd  dimension: There are 4 possible vectors in the 2nd dimension multiplied by 6 vectors in the topological dimension (4×6=24). It is my contention, admittedly highly speculative: Based on this geometry of information propagation, we can only perceive photons of light amounting to about 4.16% of full potentiality. And, this percentage is a close approximation as to the ratio of ordinary matter to the rest of the composition of our Universe. It cannot be a simple coincidence!

When we gaze up into a starry night sky, we don’t see other stars and galaxies, what we see is our story, unfolding right before our very eyes from the dimensional manifold. The reason we have the impression the Universe is expanding and actually accelerating in its expansion is because our 3D “movie” is getting more and more complex with passing time, and its information content grows with time as well. What we humans see with our expanding outer space and newly-created time is an algorithmic deployment of holographic information that grows in size and complexity.

Our brightest minds came up with M-theory which could be our best shot at quantum gravity, a theory of everything, with the aim of unifying quantum mechanics with general relativity, if you add a computational twist to it. String theory postulates that our reality has 10 dimensions, M-theory has 11 dimensions. Extra dimensions are beyond our perception as any additional dimension is at a right angle to the previous one, “compactified” or “curled up,” in the String theorist’s jargon. It means you can get any possible configuration of particles, and consequently, all logically possible universes that are just as real as the one where you are reading this sentence right now. Thus, you could think of time (+anti-time), orthogonal to 3D space, as the 4th spatial dimension. The 5th dimension would be “Probabilistic space,” the 6th dimension would be “Phase space,” where Dark Matter with alien civilizations are presumably nested.

'Pancomputationalism', some might call computational panpsychism, offers a new perspective on the physics of our world. It is the notion that the Universe is a computational machine, or rather a network of computational processes which, following fundamental physical laws, computes its own destiny from the current state. In my digital philosophy, I adhere to the worldview of hybrid computation: If I were to program a whole-world simulation, I would create a computational universe with a variety of computing modes at the core of its engine, a hybrid of digital computing and quantum computing. And computational thinking does not stop there. Picture Leaving physicalist assumptions behind, and basing our assumptions on the combination of computational physics, M-Theory and the Holographic Principle, we can further argue that every planet, every star and every black hole is a massive program in the universal operating system. Their mass differential, for example, must produce varying emerging effects around them such as gravity. Consequently, potential life on the surface of an alien planet would be subjected to its own data lineage, many would call a "vibratory" reality, or a parallel spacetime continuum, and by definition, would be "out of phase" with our own earthly life with the so-called "common observer effect." This addresses the Fermi Paradox which is a good topic for another day.

We can also recognize our planet, as well as any other, as a conscious entity (or a massive computational system, or a planetary superorganism, depending on the perspective) with its own destiny and perceptual framework, including self-awareness. This, of course, may appear controversial and not so obvious. At the moment, society at large still remains either ignorant or skeptical of such an idea, so it’s important to justify the hypothesis via observable evidence which indicates that this could be the case. The idea of planetary consciousness is being investigated in long term research at the International Consciousness Research Laboratory, by the Global Consciousness Project and the Global Brain Institute. Groundbreaking research and development in the field of self-aware global system is presented in the academic work, scholarly journal articles and books by Ben Goertzel, Peter Russell, Francis Heylighen, Larry Dossey, Roger Nelson, Kevin Kelly, Antonin Tuynman, Dean Radin, Thomas Malone, to name just a few brilliant thinkers, who have valuable insights to contribute to the discourse.

Consciousness: Evolution of the Mind, Documentary (2021), Official Teaser Trailer Released

by Alex Vikoulov Picture “I regard consciousness as fundamental. I regard matter as derivative from consciousness. We cannot get behind consciousness. Everything that we talk about, everything that we regard as existing, postulates consciousness.”  Max Planck

The study of consciousness needs to be lifted out of the mysticism that has dominated it. Consciousness is not just a matter of philosophy or spirituality. It’s a matter of hard science. It’s a matter of understanding the brain and the mind – a pattern structure made out of information. It’s also a matter of engineering. If we can understand the functionality of the brain, its neural code, then we can build the same functionality into our computer systems. There’s no consensus on what produces consciousness, but everyone regardless of metaphysical views can agree what it is like to be conscious. Given that consciousness is subjectivity, what consciousness is like is what consciousness is. Video: Consciousness: Evolution of the Mind, Documentary (2021), Official Teaser
‘Mind’ and ‘Consciousness’ are two different but somewhat overlapping terms related to the phenomenality of our experiential reality. Different species have a variety of their biological information processors which unsurprisingly results in qualia diversity. All species live in their own unique sensory universes. There is “something it is like to be” an organism. The human brain, our biological “wetware,” has a fractal structure on many genetic and abstract cognitive levels. Information is “modus operandi” of consciousness.

If we are to reason for the non-dual picture of the world then quantum physics is directly linked to consciousness. The human brain is a physical organ that transmits and interprets electrochemical signals. Its biochemistry is certainly governed by quantum physical laws, and consciousness – which is clearly related to the functioning of the brain -- must therefore be related to the quantum physical processes going on within the brain and in the cosmos at large.

Research has shown that consciousness is non-local, a scientific way of alluding to a connection within a higher dimensional order. Matter has also been shown to be non-local, which hints that matter might be an expression of consciousness, emerging from the ‘Unified Field’ – the quantum layer of pure potentiality – the code layer beneath all dimensions where time and space are information.

Reality is fundamentally experiential. Nothing is real for us until perceived. A little while ago, the idea that our minds create reality would have seemed preposterous to most westerners. But today everyone in the West becomes a bit more susceptible to this bold new idealistic, computationalist thinking along with certain QM interpretations directly pointing to the fundamental laws of Nature emerging from consciousness... [VIDEO TRANSCRIPT]

Consciousness: Evolution of the Mind, Documentary (2021), Official Teaser Released

by Alex Vikoulov Picture “I regard consciousness as fundamental.

The Timescape of Homo Sapiens: Insights on Our Time as a Species

by Alex Vikoulov Picture
“We may have different religions, different coloured skin, but we all belong to one human race.”   -Kofi Annan

The entire human race can be envisaged as one large, interconnected entity, stretching across time and space. If you could assume the God’s eye view of mankind outside of space-time, you would not only see a hundred billion or so disconnected individuals but a humanity that is more like a massive body, or perhaps a neural network, with a hundred billion cells commensurate with the total number of neurons in the human brain.

With the invention of language, “modern” Homo sapiens (people who were more or less like us) first appeared on the planet about 50,000 years ago. Since then, approximately 109 billion members of our species have ever been born, according to estimates by Population Reference Bureau (PRB). The current global population of about 7.8 billion represents about 7 percent of the total number of humans who have ever lived.

This demographic research provides a host of quantifiable properties of the human species as a whole and led me to intriguing conclusions that I would like to share with you here. After perusing the PRB’s demographic dataset, I decided to refine some of its parameters by interpreting and further visualizing the data via graphs and diagrams.

As I mentioned earlier, according to PRB, it is estimated that the total number of members of our species ever lived is roughly 109 billion people. One would think that the majority of this totality lived a long time ago and may represent prehistoric men and women but actually that is not the case.

This is an overview of world population as of mid-2019: Picture Figure.1: Snapshot of World Population. Source: Toshiko Kaneda, Charlotte Greenbaum, and Kaitlyn Patierno, 2019 World Population Data Sheet (Washington, DC: Population Reference Bureau, 2019)
For simplicity sake, if we assume that the average life expectancy of all Homo sapiens ever lived is about 45 years of age, then that would give us about 5 trillion subjective years. This number would constitute the 'Timescape' of Homo sapiens up to the present.

Average age of all living people is about 30 years that would give us approximately 231 billion subjective years.

We are a truly networked species, seemingly wired for civilization. An astonishing conclusion I came up with while analyzing the research data was that the overwhelming majority (nearly 98%, Figure.2) of representatives of our species were born in civilized societies.

Figure.2: World Population, billions Figure.2: World population in billions, with estimated range of future population after 2020 based on "high" and "low" scenarios. Data from the United Nations projections in 2019
In 1 A.D. world population was about 300 million people and the total number of “modern” humans ever born at that point was about 47 bln. 163 mln. which is close to 43% of the total number of people ever lived.

The following diagram (Figure.3) shows that most of us as a species (57%) were born after the birth of Jesus Christ which is marked as the A.D. era in our historical calendar. Picture Figure.3: People born before/after Christ What other insights can be extracted from the demographic research?

Roughly 11% of all people ever lived were born after 1900 A.D. In subjective years, the effect of the ever-growing and longer-living population would be even more pronounced, as seen in the following two pie graphs (Figure.4, 5). Figures .4 & 5. Distributions before/after 1900
If we factor in a double life expectancy, again for simplicity sake, for those born after the industrial revolution, then it would be shown in the chart (Figure.5) which is roughly a quarter of the total: 1.2 trillion subjective years. In this sense, the Timescape of Homo sapiens would be distributed as  ¼ “industrial” and ¾ “pre-industrial.”

In today’s world, we are not only incredibly interconnected but also closely interrelated. In 1999, the Yale statistician Joseph Chang showed that if you go back far enough – say, 32 generations, or 900 years – you'd find that everyone alive today descends from a single individual in the past. We might have an analog of “six degrees of separation” in genealogy. As Chang wrote in his study: “Our findings suggest a remarkable proposition: No matter the languages we speak or the color of our skin, we share ancestors who planted rice on the banks of the Yangtze, who first domesticated horses on the steppes of the Ukraine, who hunted giant sloths in the forests of North and South America, and who laboured to build the Great Pyramid of Khufu.”

That can be clearly seen on the following diagram (Figure.6). Picture Figure.6: Exponential Pedigree
Around 1100 AD, the total number of your ancestors was equal to world population at that time. Around 800 AD, due to exponential pedigree, the total number of your ancestors exceeded the total number of people ever lived. Multiple lineages coalesce and converge on a single common ancestor, if you go back far enough. Thus, everyone is related to everyone else several times over and everyone is of “royal blood,” too. This means that each of us is a direct descendent of ancient pharaohs, emperors, kings and queens. Everyone is royalty.

You are an apogee of Earthly Nature encompassing numerous generations of humans (as well as preceded non-human terrestrial life), sitting atop of the tree of life… and so is everyone else who lives today. We all can be regarded as archetypes for future generations as well, or perhaps a “developing pattern,” if you intend to live indefinitely long. At any rate, genetically and anthropologically speaking, we all are one humongous extended family.
