How canal life changes my daily routines… Day 295
Sunday 12th May – Day 295
This life seems to lend itself to early to bed and early to rise which is the opposite of how I used to be, as I used to hate getting up early and love staying up late, but when you live so close to nature then you don’t have much option but to wake up with the birds which I really don’t mind.
Also, if we stay up late we only ending up using more electric and draining the boat battery or the powerbank so whats the point. I watch very little TV anymore. Some YouTube and the odd series but I would say about 80% less than when I lived in a house.
What with one thing and another, either cruising and the fresh air and locks or work, I’m nice and tired by the end of the day and the hormones seemed to have settled down to let me sleep which is miracle and makes such a massive difference. It also helps that i can more or less dictate my days so if i’m tired i can have a power nap ((I don’t think you’ve had one in ages Peachy!)) I know and I love a power nap. The thing is when you have a fixed workplace to go to with fixed hours when hormones are playing up, it is so hard waking up at daft o’clock the brain starts worrying about getting up for work, then you don’t sleep and it becomes a vicious circle and you feel awful all the time. I’m so pleased there is more discussion and openness about the peri-menopause because it was created by the devil to make women go insane! Well, that’s what it feels like, which is why i feel so grateful it’s settled down and i feel more like myself with every day living this life.
Also, one of the benefits of going to bed early is watching the bats darting about outside the windows. If you love nature then the boating life could be for you!
This morning I made the most of the 4.30am start by getting some freelance work done. Next week I’ve cleared my diary for three days to edit my Jersey novel so I want to get as ahead as I can with everything else. Also the week beginning the 20th we are in London as you know so I want a week off ((You’re never at work!)) to enjoy that.
Right, week done. Hope everyone has had a good week. Time to crank it next week to LONDON!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

How many miles? Day 294
Saturday 11th May – Day 294
We decided to stay moored up in Berkhamstead as I had work to do and had a reasonable signal. I was interrupted numerous times with the swans and cygnets pecking the boat but it’s an interruption I don’t mind.
We also decided to clean the boat as I’ve been trying to get better at having breaks from my laptop so my eyes don’t shrivel up ((my tiny violin is playing only for you Peachy. It’s such a hard life you lead)) The boat soon gets messy when you’re cranking it with the windows and doors open.
((Wait a minute what do you mean Estimate on the miles to London tomorrow??)) 39 miles 38 locks – ((explain yourself peachy)) well, sometimes I’ve realised very recently, the canal planner isn’t 100% accurate ((Oh come on!)) yesterday we had tackled 14 locks in one day and the planner said 13! So it could be that the planner is slightly out but that’s also because you can only select certain locations close by where we are moored, so not always accurate so over time it has changed the distance and locks! ((Give me strength))
So, for now these are the updated mileage: So less miles but more locks. I did do a planner when we left the Ashby canal but hey ho. It’s a still a lot of miles and locks and not many left to do! You can see by the total that there as nearly as many miles as there are locks on this final run into London.
Estimate: London bound totals: cruising miles 137/175
Locks: 148/186 Tunnels: 6 Swing Bridge: 2

Another hot cruising day… Day 293
Friday 10th May – Day 293
Very hot again so we decide to crank it early doors. We set off and quickly moor at the services and we got chatting ((of course you did. Those poor people trying to enjoy some peace and quiet on a canalside walk!)) to someone who looked at the boat when it was for sale in 2018! Anyway, he bought another boat which is a good thing, else we probably wouldn’t have ended up owning The Plot as he still has his! Funny how things work out.
Services done which took a while as the water point was slow to fill up the tank and then it was onto a flight of locks where there were a couple of volunteers helping, so it was very pleasant doing this flight of 7 with them helping and having a good old chat.
Coming out of the final lock it was a four mile stretch of cruising and then we managed to find a nice spot to moor. This Grand Union is certainly living up to it’s name – it’s fabulous. What a beautiful canal and so much to see. I can see one day we will have to come back and explore all these places we have cruised past and not had time to stop at. I think you could easily do a whole year just on this canal to explore it properly.
We carried on and did another 7 locks before mooring up for the night at Berkhamsted. We were going to crank it to Hemel Hempstead but the heat has beaten us. At every lock the sun was beating down and physically it takes it out of you ((Especially with your white Yorkshire body Peachy!))
A wonderful cruise but day well and truly done. Until tomorrow. x
Cruising: 6 miles / 14 lock
Estimate: London bound totals: cruising miles 137/198 Locks: 148/174 Tunnels: 6 Swing Bridge: 2

Feeling hot, hot, hot… Day 292
Thursday 9th May – Day 292
Wow, today was hot, very, very hot! It was nice and cool in the morning when we decided to walk to the bridge where the Great Train Robbery took place. It funny how you cannot help but want to look at these things. It’s just a normal train bridge which had something happen here in the past. I thought Chris was going to take us on one of his wild goose chases as we went off the canal, along a field, over a very busy road to the bridge. Pics taken, some filming done and it’s back to the boat, untie the ropes and off we go again.
Instead of sneaking in the boat to work because of the rain, I sneak in the boat to get out of the sun. It is relentless. ((Always moaning!)) Give me a nice 19 degrees and cloud any day of the week! Even though it’s only four miles we have eight locks and some of them are difficult with the full force of the sun with no shade ((Hope you remembered your suncream!)) today I did!
I haven’t done much filming on this stretch. I did get ahead with my vlogs again and decided since I was busy with other things I didn’t want to be do film so much so the vlog covering this stretch of a few weeks will probably just be one vlog. Hopefully when we come up again we will vlog the bits I missed, although I think as I mentioned at some point ((Not sure if you did Peachy)) if we don’t get more subscribers to the channel then I will probably stop them in winter as I cannot justify 20-30 of editing per week, especially when we will likely to be working off the boat, so I don’t think people will be that interested in that side of life!
I love doing all the blogs and vlogs but unfortunately they don’t bring me an income, so unless I win the lottery they will have to stop with maybe the odd vlog here and there but we will see how the rest of the year goes. I’ve not given up yet on them yet! It would help if you lovely people who watch them could like the vlogs or make a comment – it’s helps to send the vlog up an algorithm or something and then our channel will get recommended to more people! ((Please don’t do this. Think of the poor people subjected to watching Peachy forget everything))
Cruising: 4 miles / 8 lock  / 1 swing bridge

Cruising the Grand Union Canal – Day 291
Wednesday 8th May – Day 291
Another sunny day as we set off early to cruise this lovely stretch of the Grand Union and tackle 7 locks and cruise for 9 miles which is a long cruise for us but we want to tick off the miles as much as we can whilst the weather is nice in our bid to get to London.
We moor up for lunch and then I do some work on the Newark Book Festival website – the website and tickets for the events are live now if you want to have a look. It’s been fab teamwork to get it to this point.
When we arrive at a set of three locks there were loads of lockies on, so I only have to open one gate and they did all the rest ((You’re so jammy with the locks)) some of the volunteers were training ((I hope you listened so you know what to do?)) Listen I’ve probably done about 200 locks since we’ve had the boat ((And you still don’t know what you’re doing – unbelievable!)) but i will admit i listened to some of the advice re opening certain paddles in a way to keep the boat more stable in the lock.
More cruising and more locks and we get to the point we’ve had enough as it’s been a long, hot day and we’d hoped to moor up earlier but couldn’t find anywhere to moor. Finally, after cruising about another mile we moor up in the shade. We cruised past Danni and Joe’s and Robbie Cummins narrowboats who are fab channel boat YouTubers! We did see Robbie and later he walked past our boat but we decided not to bother him as I can imagine sometimes he might need some time to himself!
Cruising: 9 miles / 7 lock
London bound totals: cruising miles 133/198 Locks: 127/174 Tunnels: 6 Swing Bridge: 1

Swinging and grinding kinda day – Day 290
Tuesday 7th May – Day 290
((Seriously have you been drinking this week – what are all these random titles about?)) The sun is shining and what a day to get cruising again. Chris returns the car to the hire company whilst I crack on and get some freelance work done as I want to be outside and enjoying this cruise, especially as I haven’t cruised this stretch before and the sun is out! I mean, the actual sun!
First up, we cast off and stop at the services for emptying the elsan and filling with water etc and then coffee made, washing machine on and it’s off we cruise and what a delightful cruise it is, as the sun treats us to one of those special days. This stretch is beautiful and we bask in the glory of such a wonderful life.
We arrive at our only lock of the day and it’s a bit of an optical illusion as we cannot work out what’s going on. I jump off to go and see what’s happening and it turns out there is a swing bridge in the middle of the lock! So, the boat will not fit into the lock until the swing bridge has been opened. There are few people watching and loitering at the lock and a pub next to the lock but thankfully not many people properly gongoozerling.
I wander over and soon work out it’s pretty simple to operate ((just like yourself)) – there is a handle to pull which releases the mechanism, then it’s just a case of pushing it open so Chris can bring the boat in. We then close the lock gates, let the water out. It doesn’t take much as there isn’t a great deal of difference in the levels. Then it’s gates open, boat out and then I push the swing bridge back and job done. This is the second swing bridge I’ve tackled as we had one when we left the Trent and onto the Coventry but never one inside a lock.
We carry on a bit further but decide to find a spot to moor and Chris starts the horrid job of renovating the gas locker. Luckily, it turns out it’s not as bad as he thought so we take everything out and cleaned out all the mess and then whacked it with a hammer to get off all the loose rust, then a bit of grinding ((This blog post is bordering on obscene)) then the rust protector goes on ((At least there is some protection!)) and it’s a job well started for now.
The sunshine is wonderful and we make the most of the first night of having the chairs on the towpath as it’s finally dry enough to enjoy it. Day done!
Cruising: 6 miles / 1 lock which included a swing bridge
London bound totals: cruising miles 124/198 Locks: 120/174 Tunnels: 6 Swing Bridge: 1

What’s happened to the chocolate Ovaltine? Day 289
Monday 6th May – Day 289
((what kind of a title is that? Are you actually losing the plot?)) It’s the last day with the car today and we are ready to cruise. It’s been really nice having a few days with only a little time on the laptop and my eyes feel better for it. In the morning, we head to Bedford as we have never been there before and park up near the river, which we only just realised we will travel along one day when we come this way. We treat ourselves to a coffee as we watch the world go by and people running up and down the riverside.
Afterward it’s a visit to Home Bargains ((Oh you know how to live Peachy!)) it really is a treat when you move around and don’t always have access to these shops for bits and bobs. We also visit Tesco and Asda to fill the boat with shopping whilst we only have to carry it from where we have managed to park the hire car, in a safe residential area about three minutes from the boat. We have to try about three shops before I managed to track down some chocolate Ovaltine ((I really don’t know why I associate myself with this blog anymore!)) It’s a drink i really like, but it has to be the chocolate one. Sometimes it can be a nightmare to find – i suspect there are lots of secret drinkers out there!
After lunch we return to the boat and I spent a few hours at the dinette sorting out my storage on my laptop as I’m running out of room creating the vlogs for YouTube. I also sort a lot of other faffy things to do with the PC which every time I switch on my laptop I mean to do, but never get around to it’s a job well done.
Then that’s about the day done. Until tomorrow. x

Birthday celebrations. Day 288
Sunday 5th May – Day 288
It’s Chris’s birthday today and so I treat him by making a veggie brekkie ((Are you sure that’s a treat… you’re cooking and all that!)) and then we set off for a car cruise as it’s a perfect day – blue skies with a smattering of clouds and about 19 degrees. Wonderful.
We visit some lovely areas as we cruise around making the most of having a car. It’s a quick trip to the pub for a celebration birthday drink. We decide not to go out for a meal as we enjoyed a nice meal out yesterday and with the cost of eating now even for something simple working out at about £50, we decide to use that towards the fuel and return to the boat and I make us some homemade pizzas ((Poor Chris are you trying to finish him off on his birthday)) then its onto the stern with a drink because why spend money going out when we already have the perfect view and location.
Day done. Week done. The next two weeks are going to busy in a nice way as I need to get my Jersey book edited and sent back to my publisher so we are on track to publish in June ((Leaving it a bit late Peachy and i’ve already told everyone this!)) I know, but hey ho that’s how some things work. I also need to get as much as my freelance work done as possible as I want a proper week off ((A week off?? From what exaclty!)) I’m ahead with my vlogs now and the blogs I can only upload as you know the drill – I’ve got to live it to write it. Thanks for reading x

We cruise in a car! Day 287
Saturday 4th May – Day 287
It’s up early and we leave the boat about 8am to wander to the car hire company. Milton Keynes really is a beautiful green area. The main shopping area isn’t for me as it seems a bit soleless, but each to their own. The surrounding green areas certainly make up for it.
By 9am we are on the road. It always feels strange to have a car, we don’t really miss having a car and a couple of days is just enough. We drive to Newark to have a birthday lunch with Chris’s folks which is really nice catch up and food. Whilst we were there one of their neighbours who watches our vlogs left us some coffee and money for more coffee! ((What? Oh God, you’re going to be insufferable now. Especially as you were ‘recognised’ the other day as well and people keep complimenting you on your boat! It’s a good job these blogs are stopping soon!)) it was very kind and we were really touched by the gesture. It gives us a little hope that maybe we might actually make this new adventure work. If we don’t get enough subscribers by Christmas then I think we will probably have to stop the vlogs as I cannot justify 20-30 hours it takes to create each one each week if it’s not financially viable. ((I’m sure YouTube are shaking in their boots that their profits will plummet!))
Meal done, we drive to Derby so Chris’s can visit some of his friends and I visit mine and my friend very kindly dyes and cuts my hair for me. I cannot dye it on the boat as I don’t want the chemicals to go into the water. ((Oh I wish I’d have known. I would have paid her to dye it green like Grotbags!)) I used to love watching Grotbags! Socialising done. it’s back to the boat we enjoy a few drinks on the stern and day done. Until tomorrow. x
