Consider Magic
I guess I’m in a bit of a whimsical mood today, because this piece is more of a contemplative one. We’ll be glancing at the concepts of magic and energy within the world and perceptions of reality and nature – a bit deep, I know, but the inspiration for this poem must have come from somewhere so I might as well entertain it. Without further ado, please enjoy the poem!
Consider MagicCan it be that reality has magic to it? Not magic
in that wishy-washy, we’re-all-happy-at-the-end-of-the-day way,
but sparks. Touch them—blister your fingers, and feel
what it is to be magical.
Energy, maybe. Can energy and magic be the same thing?
No, no—energy belongs to the alive, but I find magic
in dead leaves collected in pavement gutters, trodden on
but creating an entire season by themselves.
There is a sun in the sky and a breeze in the air, and both
contain these violent sparks. The same as the leaves? I can’t say.
Different magics, perhaps. Different types. Different moods.
A tree sways and its leaves bud in spring—new magic, breathing.
I see the anger in biting ice, not mischievousness but fury,
and wonder at the melodic swirling of snowflakes between it;
they are delicate, gentle, kind—yet they are carried on that irate wind,
and both manage to coexist.
Does it matter? Not quite. It matters in the way that a smile does,
as in all that care take joy in it, and all that don’t ignore it,
but it exists nonetheless. Ignore the rain and ponder why your body
is suddenly drenched and shivering—ignore the magic and feel your fingertips burn.
