Much Ado About Paper Books

*This post is in its entirety a copy of a post just published at Mad Genius Club (under another title.) I don’t normally do this, but it’s such a long post, took me so much time (and I need to shower and write the paying stuff) and besides I think it will spark different discussion here, among mostly readers than there among mostly writers. Feel free to comment on both blogs, if you wish, the discussion will take different paths. I am shocked at how long this ran, but I think it needed to be...

Sunday Vignettes! [On Tuesday]- by Luke, Mary Catelli and ‘Nother Mike Promo Post For Tuesday by Free Range Oyster

*Yes, we’re being rebels here at ATH again. The Sunday promo on Tuesday, imagine that. The thing is that when I got this I’d already put up a post, because the internet hamsters were exceptionally slow. But it wouldn’t be fair to the people who sent in promo to just ignore it. And while we’re at it, we’ll do vignettes too, I think I have a post around here somewhere. Sorry about the disorganization, a bit is native, but the rest is 2016 trying to go out with bang. Oh, yeah, Sword and blood is...

What To Do About Extremist Speech by 60 Guilders

What To Do About Extremist Speech by 60 Guilders

The question of what to do about extremist speech—or speech deemed extremist, which are two rather different things—is one that frequently bedevils people. The basic responses are threefold: Refute, suppress, or ignore. Each has its merits in certain situations—yes, even suppression, although its value is limited to dealing with speech that actively incites people to criminality.

This is relevant due to one of the interesting consequences of th...

A Scale of the Mind

The current books I’m reading while having meals or waiting for an appointment are a series of medieval mysteries that I’m 90% sure are very badly researched. There’s just this air of “I’m bsing this part” about them, but it’s not my time period (before the Black Death) and as such I don’t know details, so nothing has jumped up to bite my nose. And the stories are pleasant enough with interesting and human characters. Oh, yeah, and they’re included in my KULL membership, so even though when I...

It’s snowing and I’m lazy

It’s snowing and I’m lazy. I want to work on Darkship Revenge. I might do a short story for you guys later, but I’m not promising that it will be done by any particular time.

I dreamed of Grant, which means I need to work on that again soon.

But today is a wonderful time to write, and I just want to work.

Gears and Patterns

We were taught in school, and in fact it is something you learn very easily if you read literature starting from say the chansons de geste, is that each generation views the world according to a pattern, and that pattern is often their “scientific” (one should rather say macro, since science has very little to do with it, even after the emergence of a science that could be called that) view of the world.

I.e. if you view the world in terms of the procession of the heavens influencing things o...

The American Race – Drak Bibliophile

*Sorry this is so late. I had some potentially worrying news yesterday and dealt with it the way I deal with things: by doing stupid cr*p, which meant I spent the morning finishing outdoor holiday decorations. I hope Drak forgives me posting this so late.
Also, will 60 guilders, and whoever else sent me blog posts that haven’t run re-send with “blog post” in the title? Thunderbird is a pain to search, and right now all I can find is William Lehman’s and Foxfier’s. – SAH*

The American Race – D...

Hard and Soft

Back many years ago, when number 1 son was born (on COBRA) we were left with something like eighteen thousand dollars to pay off, and no job. Worse, not only didn’t Dan have a job (okay, he did, but his job didn’t pay him. Yes, we should have sued, but we were young and stupid.) but I also had been sidelined by pre-eclampsia for almost a year and therefore had lost all my free lance translation clients. (Also I wasn’t in my right mind. I don’t know if it was pre-eclampsia after effects or pos...

Rainbows and unicorn farts – by William Lehman

Rainbows and unicorn farts – by William Lehman

I get the free download of the New York Times. Why? Well, because I am not about to give those idiots any of my money, but it is worthwhile to keep up on what my political opponents say/believe. Every once in a while it leaves me with dents in my walls, and corresponding bumps in my head, because face palms just aren’t enough for the stupid. One catastrophically stupid article I expect, (and am almost never disappointed) but two or more, well… To...

Good

Yesterday on one of the Facebook groups I attend, I came across a post by one of the Puppy Kickers, (echoed by someone in the group in exasperation) which went something like “Neo nazis want books that are less about conscious feminism and diversity. So did the Sad Puppies. Are the Sad Puppies ashamed of themselves now?”

I don’t need to spend much time on the argument itself, and frankly, the person who made it is not a stupid man, and he should be ashamed of making such a stupid comparison....
