The House

"A house is just a big box to keep your stuff in," my dad once said.

His comment was made to me in the middle of the foreclosure of my home. The home I'd bought with my soon-to-be ex-husband and our two small children. The home I dreamed of was going to be my greatest loss. Or so I'd thought.

My dad was a custom home builder, and it struck me odd when he'd said those words. He'd built beautiful homes with specifications to accommodate people's lives. It's funny though because, in the end, a house is just a box, right?

For me, a house could never be "just a box," and a house was not a house, but my dwelling became my home.

The House on Vineyard Road tells about a woman who must face hard facts in her tender adult life, and conquer fears she never knew existed. But having done so, she builds strength greater than she imagines. . . only to find herself faced with the same demons at the second half of her life.

Sometimes, the only way forward is two steps back.
