Inspiration for my first novel
I have rarely been one to share or write down my thoughts. Partly because our thoughts are incredibly personal and private things, but mostly because I've never thought myself so important as to think that anyone would care to hear my thoughts.
However, conventional wisdom dictates that one of the best ways to engage with readers is through a blog. So, here it is.
Since the publication and release of my first novel, 'A Part of You', a number of people have asked me what inspired the story. I suppose it is uncommon for a man to write a romantic love story (and certainly one which centers around the subjects of infertility and surrogacy).
I decided to write an emotional and confronting love story when I realized that much of what is published in film and print today is designed to make people think something, as opposed to making them feel something. It seems that gone are the days when a movie trailer can send a tingle down your spine, or the synopsis of a book makes your heart flutter. So, I set out to create what I could no longer find among the modern mediums.
However, the inspiration for 'A Part of You' came exclusively from my wife. My wife is a rare and remarkable woman. So remarkable in fact, that after she was forced to leave Australia following the expiration of her tourist visa, I sold my house, quit my law practice, and left my family, to continue our courtship in the United States.
My wife's creativity and yearning for adventure inspired Hannah Lenore's desire for travel and new experiences. Her empathy and capacity for love and affection gave life to Katelynn's character. And her intellect and healthy respect for her mind gave birth to Desmond's impromptu closing statements in the court case.
The oft-repeated advice given by established authors is to 'write what you know.' In my case, that was love. I have now spent over five years with my wife, Katrina, and every day during that time her beautiful spirit has taught my heart about love. About its nature, its impact, and its beauty.
So, to those who have enjoyed 'A Part of You', all gratitude goes to my wife, for this story would not exist without her influence, her (daily) encouragement, and her perfect being.
I love you, bub.
