National Appreciate a Dragon Day 2025

Happy National Appreciate a Dragon Day! Here is a teaser quote from my forthcoming novella, Axes and Wings: A Dark Horizon. Dwarves, dragons, goblins. This book was inspired by House of the Dragon and The Hobbit and will be filled with action, drama, and clean romance. Perfect for any lovers of dragons and dragon riders. This shorter series will run concurrently with Sparks Shall Rise.

An enormous troll raised its stone club to crush the soldiers in front of it, but then Onyx swooped in, scooped the brute up with the talons on her back legs, and closed her jaws around its neck. Blood showered the ground as she ripped into the troll and dropped the body. Only she could pull off that move because of her large size. Axes and Wings: A Dark Horizon

Why I Write Fantasy

Three books stacked on top of each other against a tree

Why do I write fantasy? When I watched Lord of the Rings, it was the first time I sought out fantasy books. There’s just something about the medieval settings, usually deep in nature, sword battles, magical creatures, and horses that appealed to me as if they were ingrained in my DNA.

And then there’s the good versus evil themes. I love a classic epic fantasy of the good guys versus the bad guys, dark against light. And they are mostly in other worlds other than our Earth. I live in the ...

Regarding Pirated Copies

Recently I got scammed with a bootleg copy of a DVD. I’m always careful when ordering from Amazon, and I think I mistakenly thought the product was sold by and shipped by them. It took a few days to finally realize that it was not a genuine copy. There was no design on the inside flap under the discs where the episodes and special features are usually listed, the discs did not list episodes or special features on them, and when they were played, they went straight to a menu instead of showi...

Carmen Mental Health Quote

This is a quote from a new character in A Stormy Path. This portrays exactly what the Sparks Shall Rise series is about. And not just mental illness, but other struggles like grief, disability, low self-worth, and more to come. Each book has to strike the balance of telling the story of a character’s struggles, as well as a fantasy story. And I know I’m not a perfect writer, but this is all being written with the hope that people who feel as if their life has fallen into too much darkness can find a reason to keep fighting.

“Mental illnesses can be difficult to fight, but they are not always impossible to control or even overcome.” Carmen, A Stormy Path

Proof and Format Test Copies

One thing I didn’t expect when becoming an author was how many proof and format test copies I would accumulate. 17 in all and will still be counting.

A Fantasy Author's Search History: When was the hourglass invented?

A Fantasy Author's Search History: When was the hourglass invented?I’m finding conflicting dates for this question, but my main focus was if it existed in medieval times, which it did. The time for invention I see most often is the 14th century, but there are other conflicting times. I’m not a historian.

Vision Teaser Quote

Here is a little teaser from Sparks Shall Rise: Visions and Illusions. Mental illness or other struggles don’t have to stop you from living your life and overcoming obstacles.

She had been ready to abandon the mission, but now that she was faced with it, Vision would never be able to live with herself if she stood by and did nothing. Mental illness or not, she had to be brave enough to face the obstacles in front of her. Vision, Visions and Illusions.

Journal Entries Part 9

I really don’t remember a lot of the writing that I was coming up with years ago. You will see “Lay of Toranon.” That was inspired by Tolkien’s lays. And I really thought I could write a song. Before you ask, I no longer have it, and I don’t remember it. And I have no idea what I was planning to do with flying horses.

January 5, 2008

I can’t believe how much I have gotten done on The Stone of Light. Besides getting half of the book done (1), I’ve also written the Lay of Toranon an...

A Fantasy Author’s Search History: What were books make out of in medieval times?

A Fantasy Author’s Search History: What were books make out of in medieval times? The paper was actually parchment or vellum made from animal skins. Then the pages are sewn together and attached to a wooden cover that is bound with leather. And the cover can be ornately decorated. Of course in fictional writing, you could take some creative liberty with the design of books.

Dr. Google Reference Quote

I put this in Reawakened Flames to highlight the phenomenon known as Dr. Google. This is when you think something is wrong with you and google symptoms to try to diagnose yourself, which can lead to looking into things that just make you scared and feel worse. Imagine how bad it is when you add health anxiety into the mix.

The castle’s library contained an impressive collection of all kinds of subjects. Unfortunately for her, this included medical knowledge. At one point, Aria constantly leafed through those books to find any ailments that might match her various symptoms. She quickly realized that researching too much into sicknesses of the body did more harm than good. Aria, Reawakened Flames.
