New Book Out!

I've been working on getting more material together for the community content programs of various tabletop RPG publishers. While it rarely causes a vast sum to fall into my hands, it does involve a steady -- if modest -- stream of income to roll my way.

The newest project is an adventure for Dungeons & Dragons 5th Edition: It's titled "Consumed," and takes place in the Scarred Lands setting. Here's a look at the cover:

The idea for this adventure was born out of necessity: I was asked to run an impromptu adventure for three people late on the last day of GameHole Con in Madison, Wisconsin in November of 2018, and...

Valuing Your Own Work

I recently came across a post somewhere -- sadly, I've forgotten where it was and who wrote it -- about valuing one's own work. The context was self-published books, and while I don't have a vast amount of experience with this, I do have some, and I'd like to share my experiences with you.
The post in question suggested that people shouldn't charge less than $10 for their self-published books; while that's a great idea in theory, in practice it's unworkable. First of all, it's important to know what others are charging for similar works. Also important: ask yourself are you a "name?" By that I mean, are readers/consumers likely to have heard of you? This is the time for brutal honesty. For me, the answer is ...

Turning Play Into Work

When I started out running a D&D-based game for friends a few months ago, I was thinking about converting the adventure into something I could publish. I talked about that game back in March, in this blog post: http://billbodden.com/2019/02/11/first-time-in-decades-part-one/ Since then, several things have transpired.

First, the game came to a natural conclusion, and there was serious talk of another member stepping up to run the next game. As happens with most regular gaming sessions eventually, in the interim one person moved away, and one had a schedule change and was no longer available on the appointed night. Others had...

Crossing the Streams

I've had occasion to look in on a few streaming presentations over the last few months, and it's really opened my eyes to streaming's potential. For those not in the know. streaming is where people hook up cameras to their computers and broadcast a variety of things using various streaming platforms like Twitch. Twitch is predominantly for gaming, but there are many other types of streams as well, including streaming college and enrichment courses for continuing education.

I've recently been caught up in watching gaming streams on Twitch. Part of it has been pure vanity, as several groups have been playing through D&D adventures that I've written. Part of it has been the enjoyment of watching people having fun playing games. Most of the groups I've been watching are playing D&D in the Scarred Lands setting. Since I've been doing a fair bit of writing for the Scarred Lands community content site https://www.drivethrurpg.com/product/271587/Consumed lately, it provides...

New Fiction Available!

Darkened Streets, edited by Joseph Nassise, is available now:

Some good news for a change: an anthology for which I've written a story has officially been published and is now available. Darkened Streets is a collection of stories from White Wolf Publishing's World of Darkness line of tabletop RPG settings. This anthology comprises stories about being on the road - in one way or another - and the adventures, trials and tribulations that follow.

My story is about a werewolf in the old west. Having grown up without a pack to rely on, Jake Johnson has decided to move west, find a place to settle down, and live his life in peace. Problem is, the world has other plans in store for him...

My Brag Shelf

Sometimes, when I'm feeling down, I take a look at what other authors have dubbed the Brag Shelf -- a shelf full of books I've contributed to. It gives me a lift, not only from the sense of accomplishment, but also from the wide variety of material I've worked on over the years.

The vast majority of my published work has been in the gaming field. I wrote about this last week (see 'Game of Life: http://billbodden.com/2020/01/27/game-of-life/) so I won't delve much further into the gaming aspect, except to say that there's a bunch more that isn't represented here: mostly, this is because...
