Forgotten Again

Dramatic title aside, it's disappointing to be left off the credits for a book on which I've worked. It's happened to me twice -- once two years ago, and again in the last six months. In both cases these omissions were clearly not intentional, but they present a couple of major issues for me.

First of all, there's the emotional issue of feeling forgotten, left out. This is an issue I personally have problems with, so it's something with which I need to come to terms. Second, and more importantly, it means that this is a book I can't use on my resume -- at least until it's fixed in some fashion to give me proper credit. My worst fear is that, when applying for writing work elsewhere, the publisher or developer will look at that book, see my name is not on the credits page, and assume I'm lying about my involvement to pad my list of credits.

Controversy Over GenCon's Industry Insider List

Gen Con recently announced the selections for it's Industry Insider Program for 2016. First and foremost, I would like to congratulate the Industry Insider committee for a doing a great job of bringing greater diversity to the program. I was part of the program in 2015, and was grateful for having had the honor. I decided shortly afterwards that, though it was a positive experience and I would happily participate again, trying to be involved two years in a row would selfish on my part, so I opted not to submit my name for consideration for the next couple of years...

A Mini Odyssey

A Mini Odyssey
Posted on July 19, 2016 by Bill Bodden

I freely admit that I’m a baseball fan. Every spring I look over a few baseball schedules and pick out a couple of games I’d like to see, and drop a note to a few buddies of mine who share a passion for the game — or at least a passing interest and a passion for the comradeship of the outings — and we get together for a field trip. This year I noticed an odd quirk in the schedule of the Madison Mallards — my local, college-level team. They were scheduled to play a doubleheader on one day in two different cities. The other team, a brand new outfit in Rockford, Illinois called the Rockford Rivets, would host the first game at 11 AM. Then everyone would pile into their team buses and drive the 75 miles north to Madison, Wisconsin for game two, with a 7:05 PM start time. It seemed like the perfect opportunity: an easy drive for an early game, a quick drive home with plenty of time (and opportunities) for places to stop and refresh ourselves, then another game, and we’d already be home — well, most of us, anyway.

Pre-Con Panic!

I leave for Indianapolis and GenCon next week, and between planning the schedule for booth staffing, arranging for a rental van to haul all the stuff, and a few desperate Pokemon Go adventures, life has been hectic!

I will be working the Onyx Path booth at the show, and except for breaks, will be in the booth from open to close (roughly 10a-6p) all four days. My evenings are my own for the most part...

Disappointing News

Back in December, I was contracted to work on parts of three different books. I had strong reason to believe all three would be available at GenCon, August 17-20 of this year. After turning in most of my initial material in late January/early February, I was confident things were on track...

Ringing In The New Year!

Happy New Year!

The new year brings new excitement and new challenges, but first I'd like to take a moment to recap some of the highs and lows of the past years blogging efforts.

First, I'm proud I posted as often as I did in 2017. My goal was to blog once a week, and while I didn't quite make it, I did post new blogs 45 out of 52 weeks - a new best for me.

I had 17,099 page views this year -- more than two-thirds of those views came from a single post back in April. The amount of views I've had this year is more than half-again the number of page views I've had for the previous thirty-nine months of blogging since I started. I hope that means I'm doing something right!

Stuff That I Can't Talk About -- YET!

Missed my weekly blog post deadline this week; things are going on behind the scenes that I can't really talk about just now, but the reveals for most of these projects should be happening soon - some even in the next week or so. It's been a crazy couple of weeks, with more in store!

Most recently, I've been working on a project to...

Post-Holiday Catch-Up

This past Monday, May 28, was Memorial Day here in the US. It's a Federal holiday, so a great many people enjoy the day off. It's a day when we honor our war dead, and the patriotic displays can often be overwhelming. It also happens to be the weekend of WisCon, what used to be my local convention. I say "used to be" because I don't really feel much kinship with that event any more. Instead of lots of warm greetings as in the past, I really only have a couple of close friends who still go, and while I cherish spending time with them while they're in town for WisCon, the remaining time is spent...

What a Monday!

Yeesh; I went to add a new post today, and couldn't log in. I called my hosting service, and they discovered activity that suggests a brute force attack was underway to try to take control of my website. The IT guy I spoke with suggested it was common practice to break in and use a site to send spam emails and such, and they installed a capcha on my site to help prevent this from happening again.
The tech also noted that my site still seems to be...

New Book is Out!

A book I worked on extensively last year, Pan's Guide for New Pioneers , has finally been finished. Print copies exist (I've held one in my hands!) and are making their way to stores in the next few weeks. Be sure to stop by your friendly, local game store soon and ask for a copy!

Pan's Guide is a combination quick start and adventure, meant to appeal to players who are new to the game. It includes a multi-part adventure, a nice selection of pre-generated characters, and the basic rules of the game to get people playing as quickly as possible. Part D&D adventure, part homage to Thundarr the Barbarian, and part tribute to the Walter Miller novel A Canticle for Libeowitz, Pugmire's action...
