Career-Defining Moments: Choosing Leadership Over Disruption
By Valarie R. Austin, November 4th, 2024, 10:30 AM EDT
(Previously Published on LinkedIn)
As the 2024 U.S. elections unfold, young adults—many of whom are voting for the first time—find themselves at a pivotal moment. This election season not only includes the presidential race but also Congressional and Senate races that shape the future of the country. The power to impact democracy lies in the hands of voters, making it crucial to understand the distinction between civil participation and criminal behavior.
Building Your Professional Legacy Through Civic Action
Peaceful civil disobedience has a proven history of creating change. While Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.'s leadership during the U.S. civil rights movement is well-known, there are other examples that resonate with more recent generations:
o In the 1980s, U.S. students led impactful movements against apartheid in South Africa through sit-ins, marches, and divestment campaigns, pressuring universities and businesses to end financial ties with the oppressive regime.
o The global climate change movement, started by young activists like Greta Thunberg, has mobilized millions to advocate for environmental policies and climate change awareness.
These movements showcase how peaceful activism can lead to tangible societal shifts while building leadership skills and professional credibility. It is critical for young voters to recognize that violence only delegitimizes their cause and invites stronger law enforcement responses.
Career-Defining Moments: Understanding the Stakes
January 6, 2021, serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of acting on misinformation. Spurred by false claims from some conservative, right-wing pundits, news outlets, and politicians seeking personal gain and power, individuals stormed the U.S. Capitol. These rioters were driven by the unfounded narrative that the U.S. presidential election had been stolen. This was not true. The belief in these election deniers and their fabricated claims led to disastrous outcomes—not for those who perpetuated the lie but for the participants.
Many who stormed the Capitol faced life-altering consequences, including job loss, incarceration, strained family relationships, and financial ruin from legal battles. These figures acted on a lie, while those who misled them continued their lives largely unscathed. Beyond immediate legal consequences, criminal acts related to political violence can permanently close doors to future opportunities:
o Federal positions requiring security clearances become virtually impossible to obtain with a criminal record.
o Professional licensing boards often reject applications from those with politically motivated criminal convictions.
o Many countries restrict or deny entry to individuals with criminal records—effectively limiting international career prospects.
These barriers can persist for decades, long after the political moment has passed.
Recent Examples: When Passion Crosses Legal Lines
Even today, election-related tensions remain. In Florida, an 18-year-old was arrested for allegedly brandishing a machete at voters near a polling station, a rash action that will likely bring severe legal and personal repercussions. Additionally, the Justice Department has charged individuals with making threats to election workers, elected officials and other victims over social media. One person who threatened violence through internet messages has already been charged with 30 months in prison. Furthermore, ballot drop boxes have been destroyed in states like Oregon, Arizona, and Washington. Perpetrators of such acts risk arrest, federal indictment, and lengthy prison sentences if caught. These actions sow distrust in the voting process, casting doubt on the security and safety of our votes, which undermines public confidence. Law enforcement has shown zero tolerance for such criminal acts, and those involved face severe legal consequences.
Navigating the System: Your Professional Path Forward
Given the high stakes and potential consequences, it is important for young professionals to approach the electoral process with a thoughtful, constructive mindset. U.S. elections operate within a framework designed for fairness and transparency. Voters should research and select candidates through verified sources, which ensure they select candidates who align with their values and demonstrate leadership and integrity. Young adults must also approach future elections with a mindset of constructive participation. Consider these career-building opportunities:
1. Volunteer at polling stations to develop leadership and community engagement skills.
2. Support candidates through organized outreach to build your networking capabilities.
3. Participate in voter registration efforts to demonstrate project management abilities.
4. Document your peaceful civic engagement as a testament to your leadership and commitment to constructive change.
A Call to Action: Your Career, Your Choice
To young adults and first-time voters: make your voice heard through peaceful and lawful actions. The consequences of participating in criminal acts related to elections are severe and far-reaching. Therefore, exercise your right to vote and understand your local election processes. Reject the influence of those who encourage chaos or violence as a means of achieving political ends. Elections are competitive by nature, but fair results and peaceful transitions are the foundation of democracy. Understand that your choices today shape not just your immediate future but your entire professional trajectory. Choose actions that showcase your leadership potential and commitment to positive change. Your career success begins with informed, peaceful civic engagement. Stay informed, stay engaged, and commit to making a difference through peaceful, positive actions!

Navigate, Adapt, Grow: Why Every Young Adult Should Travel
By Valarie R. Austin, October 22, 2024, 11:30 AM EDT
(Previously Published on LinkedIn)
As a career and college readiness speaker and author, I have seen how travel shapes young minds and builds essential life skills. Recently, my sister and I took a trip to Lisbon, the Capital of Portugal. Lisbon is a vibrant, cosmopolitan city that attracts tourists and immigrants from numerous countries such as France, England, Spain, Canada and the U.S. The experience reinforced what I have long advised parents and students: Travel—whether through family trips, school programs, church groups, or mentorship organizations—provides unique opportunities for problem-solving and personal growth.
Learning Through Real-World Challenges
The learning for my sister and I began immediately upon arrival when our late flight caused us to miss our shuttle connection. We had to quickly assess alternatives, leading to the discovery that familiar services like Uber™ operate internationally—a simple solution that emerged only after consulting with airport information staff. This early challenge taught us not to make assumptions and to think creatively under pressure.
Developing Cultural Intelligence and Judgment
Like many travelers, we initially fell into restaurant tourist traps, complete with English-speaking staff and picture menus, resulting in overpriced, mediocre meals. Real growth occurred when we ventured into local establishments, where menus appeared only in Portuguese and authentic cuisine awaited us. Lisbon also has culinary influences from migrants and countries, such as Brazil, Angola, and Mozambique, which the former Portuguese Empire colonized for trade, riches, and expansion of the slave trade. Using Google Translate and learning to communicate with restaurant staff built our confidence and cross-cultural communication skills—abilities we know are increasingly valued in today’s global workplace.
Building Strategic Thinking Through Transportation
Having used metro systems in Paris, New York, and other major cities, I thought I was prepared for Lisbon’s transportation model. Yet, facing Portuguese ticket machines became an exercise in resourcefulness, ultimately leading to discovering the efficiency of all-day passes that accessed Lisbon’s integrated network of ferries, metro subways, buses, and streetcars. These incidents built my competency in analyzing systems and making informed decisions.
Balancing Technology and Human Interaction
While modern tools like Google Maps proved invaluable, reaching destinations like the Museu Nacional de Arte Antiga required combining technological resources with human assistance. We asked a ticket counter representative for help buying train tickets, and then we used Google Maps to navigate to the museum. However, Google Maps was not always precise. Understandably, we found ourselves lost a few times and sought directions from local residents, whose assistance helped to get us back on track. This reminded me of the importance of being flexible and not relying solely on technology—sometimes, asking for help as well as a good old-fashioned map (and common sense) are the best tools. Young people can learn from our example that seeking help from both professional, knowledgeable sources and locals can develop interpersonal skills essential for professional environments.
Maximizing Learning Through Structured Experiences
We participated in city and food tours, which provided structured opportunities to gain deeper cultural insights. These organized events demonstrated how combining independent exploration with expert guidance can maximize learning in any new environment—a priceless lesson for academic and professional development.
Encouraging Independence in Young Travelers
Traveling with my sister showed me how important it is to let others take initiative. Her suggestion to visit Lisbon's famous Pink Street, which is known for its trendy bars, clubs, and nightlife, led to worthwhile cultural observations and experiences. We might have missed them otherwise. Although I typically planned our travel, I watched her confidence grow as she navigated new situations and made decisions throughout our journey.
For parents traveling with teens and young adults, it is essential to let them take the lead in certain scenarios. Encourage them to order at restaurants, navigate transportation, and decide on sightseeing activities. This fosters independence and critical thinking, and teaches them to adapt in unfamiliar or unpredictable circumstances.
Essential Skills Developed Through Travel
Whether through international adventures, domestic exploration, or organized group opportunities, travel cultivates crucial life skills:
1. Problem-solving: Finding creative solutions when plans change
2. Adaptability: Adjusting to new environments and cultural norms
3. Communication: Bridging language and cultural differences
4. Critical thinking: Making decisions in unfamiliar situations
5. Confidence: Building independence through hands-on experiences
Investment in Future Success
Travel represents more than just exploration—it is an investment in developing skills vital for academic and professional achievement. The ability to navigate new environments, communicate across barriers, and solve unexpected problems translates directly to success in college classrooms and professional settings. These valuable experiences do not require expensive overseas trips. Beneficial learning can come through school excursions, regional exploration, or community-organized travels.
Parents can play a crucial role by encouraging their children to step outside their comfort zones and embrace the learning opportunities that travel provides. By supporting these chances, parents help set the stage for personal growth, resilience, and independence. For young people, travel is the gateway to expanding horizons and embracing challenges. So, pack your bags, explore the unknown, and let travel be the catalyst for your success!

The Media's Role in the 2024 Election: A Call for Informed Voting
By Valarie R. Austin, August 3rd, 2024, 6:30 AM EDT
(Previously Published on LinkedIn)
As we approach the 2024 U.S. Presidential General Election on November 5th, it is crucial to revisit the media's role in shaping voter opinions. Despite potential fatigue from ongoing campaign coverage, it is essential for all voters, especially young and first-time voters, to remain engaged. The political landscape has shifted dramatically, with President Joe Biden stepping down and Vice President Kamala Harris becoming the presumptive Democratic nominee. A July 23, 2024, CNN Business article opined that President Biden would still be the candidate if "he enjoyed the support of a blindly loyal propagandistic news media." This sudden shift underscores the importance of rigorous media scrutiny of all candidates, regardless of their position or party affiliation.
Beyond Surface-Level Reporting: The Media's Crucial Role
Mainstream media outlets often forego the in-depth analysis necessary for voters to make informed decisions. Current coverage frequently focuses on surface-level aspects such as fundraising totals, polling numbers, and historical "firsts." While these factors have their place, they should not be the primary focus. Comprehensive analysis should provide insights about candidates' positions and plans from live news interviews and town halls, including:
1. Policy Proposals: Detailed breakdowns of how candidates plan to address major issues such as healthcare reform, climate change mitigation, and economic recovery.
2. Voting Records and Past Performance: A candidate's history can provide insight into their true priorities and decision-making processes.
3. Foreign Policy Stances: How do candidates plan to handle complex international situations?
4. Economic Plans: Detailed analysis of candidates' economic policies, addressing inflation, job creation, and income inequality.
5. Social Issues: Where do candidates stand on pressing social issues like racial equality, LGBTQ+ rights, or gun control?
6. Long-term Vision: What is each candidate's long-term vision for America, addressing challenges like an aging population, technological disruption, or climate change?
This in-depth analysis helps voters understand not just what candidates say, but how they think. Recent polling data from NPR's June 5, 2024, GenForward poll reveals that economic issues, particularly inflation and economic growth, are top priorities for young voters. However, they also care about threats to democracy, climate change, student debt, gun regulation, healthcare reform, and international conflicts.
The Echo Chamber: Dangers of Controlled Narratives
A concerning trend is emerging where candidates limit their exposure to challenging questions, creating an echo chamber effect by:
o Avoiding interviews with potentially hostile press outlets
o Limiting town halls and open forums
o Focusing on speeches and political rallies to adoring crowds
o Reinforcing existing supporter bases while failing to reach undecided voters
o Avoiding necessary scrutiny of policies and plans
This approach ultimately disservices voters and the democratic process. For example, Vice President Harris risks letting the opposition control the narrative about her candidacy, while former President Trump's comments might not withstand the scrutiny of an aggressive press interview. His July 31st, 2024 appearance at the National Association of Black Journalists' Annual Convention (NABJ) showcased his thoughts on various subjects, fact-checked in real-time.
This is particularly problematic for young voters who may be experiencing their first presidential election and need exposure to a wide range of perspectives to form their political views.
Navigating the Information Landscape: Young Voters in Focus
According to the Pew Research Center, about 58% of Americans are following news about the U.S. Presidential candidates for 2024, with journalists and news organizations. For young and first-time voters, navigating this complex information landscape can be particularly challenging. To make informed decisions, young voters should seek out diverse, unbiased news sources, fact-check claims, and verify information before sharing.
Conclusion: Your Vote, Your Voice
As voters, we must demand more from both candidates and media outlets. We should push for open press conferences and town halls, support journalism that asks tough questions, and engage with candidates on social media platforms. Young voters can participate by attending local political events, engaging in community discussions and encouraging peers to become informed voters.
Remember that your vote is your voice in shaping the future of our nation. Do not let media biases or candidate strategies dictate your decision. Seek out comprehensive information, engage in critical thinking, and make your choice based on substance rather than style. The strength of our democracy depends on informed citizens. Let us rise to the challenge and set a new standard for political engagement in the digital age.

Integrity in the Workplace: Your First Step to Leadership
By Valarie R. Austin, July 3rd, 2024, 9:00 PM EDT
(Previously Published on LinkedIn)
Many high school and college students are preparing to enter the workforce, whether through summer jobs, internships, or their first full-time positions. It is essential that these young adults understand the importance of integrity and transparency from the outset. Speaking truth to power might have adverse consequences, but it allows individuals to look in the mirror without feeling they have compromised their values. Concealing issues or hushing valid problems might offer short-term relief, but it ultimately undermines trust and long-term success for employees and employers. As young adults start their journey in the workforce, it is important for them to understand that honesty, even in the face of a crisis, is the best policy. It builds a foundation of trust, credibility, and confidence that is critical for sustainable success and future leadership.
The 6 C's of Crisis Management
Understanding these principles provides a robust framework for ethical decision-making and effective crisis management:
1. Competence: Competence involves the ability to identify, fix, and implement processes to prevent future crises. Historical examples like the Watergate Scandal, Boeing 737 Max incidents, and Enron’s fall show that cover-ups often exacerbate the original situation. In contrast, Johnson & Johnson's response to the 1982 Tylenol crisis demonstrates exemplary crisis management. The company immediately halted product advertising, issued safety warnings, and developed tamper-proof packaging, setting a standard for ethical corporate behavior.
2. Communication: Immediate and transparent communication with stakeholders is essential. Open channels ensure everyone is informed about the situation and steps being taken to address it.
3. Culture: A company's culture plays a significant role in crisis management. There must be mechanisms for reporting issues without fear of negative repercussions.
4. Credibility: The cornerstone of stakeholder trust. Shareholders, employees, and the public must believe that the company is not deceiving them, and is genuinely working to fix the issues unlike in the Enron example. Honest communication and verifiable actions are essential to maintain and rebuild credibility during a crisis.
5. Confidence: Closely tied to credibility, confidence is the belief stakeholders have in the business's leadership. Maintaining transparency and demonstrating a genuine commitment to resolving issues are imperative.
6. Consistency: Consistency in messaging and actions is vital. It demonstrates the company's commitment to resolving the crisis and prevents further damage to its reputation.
Swift Crisis Analysis and Strategic Planning
When facing a business crisis, a thorough analysis to understand its scope and impact is essential. Prompt action based on accurate data prevents exacerbating the problem. Once assessed, immediate acknowledgment from the highest levels of leadership - ideally the CEO, Founder, or appropriate executive - is vital for maintaining trust and credibility. Their visible involvement cannot be delegated. A clear, structured plan incorporating the 6 C's of Crisis Management should balance immediate actions with long-term strategies. This plan, publicly communicated by leadership, should outline initial steps such as implementing temporary crisis containment measures, holding individuals accountable, and developing recurrence prevention strategies. These leadership-driven actions demonstrate a commitment to addressing issues head-on and rebuilding trust. Without such decisive and visible leadership, the organization may face severe consequences.
Consequences of Cover-Ups
For young adults entering the workforce, understanding the consequences of a cover-up is crucial. Attempts to conceal a crisis can lead to:
1. Public humiliation and severe reputational damage
2. Legal and regulatory investigations
3. Loss of stakeholder trust
4. Long-term damage to business success
5. Substantial financial penalties
Conclusion: Your Challenge is to Lead with Integrity
As you embark on your career journey, remember that your integrity is your most valuable asset. Every day you will face choices that test your ethical standards. Choose honesty even when it is difficult. Speak up when you see wrongdoing and do not be afraid to ask questions, when something does not seem right. Commit to being the person who always chooses integrity over convenience and be the colleague who others trust implicitly.
When faced with an ethical dilemma, ask yourself, "What would the most ethical version of me do in this situation?" Then have the courage to be that person. By prioritizing honesty and ethical behavior from the start of your career, you will not only build a reputation for trustworthiness but also contribute to creating more transparent and accountable workplaces. Your choices today shape the leader you will become tomorrow. Make them count. Have a great and meaningful summer!

A Problem-Solving Approach for Rising High School Seniors: Choosing the Right College
By Valarie R. Austin, June 11th, 2024, 1:30 PM EDT
(Previously published on LinkedIn)
As rising high school seniors, the summer brings an exciting yet challenging decision: choosing the right college. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, the college enrollment rate for high school graduates in October 2023 was 61.4 percent, a slight decrease from 62.0 percent in October 2022. However, data from the Education Data Initiative reveals that among “first-time bachelor's degree seekers, 25.7% ultimately drop out, and up to 40% of all undergraduate students drop out.” This significant decision requires a problem-solving mindset to navigate the complexities of selecting the best institution for your future and increasing your chances of college success. During the summer and early fall, there is ample time to take action and turn your college aspirations into a well researched and thoughtful decision.
The first step in problem-solving is to understand the problem. In this case, the problem is selecting a college that aligns with your goals, needs, and circumstances. Start by clearly defining what you want from your college experience. Consider your academic and career goals, personal preferences like location and size, and the type of campus culture you will thrive in. By understanding these factors, you create a clear picture of your ideal college, making it easier to navigate the decision-making process.
1. Involve Your Stakeholders
Your college decision affects not just you but also your family. Engage with your parents or guardians to gather their perspectives. Discuss their concerns and expectations. It is crucial to avoid feeling pressured by their preferences while considering their insights.
2. Research and Prioritize
Once you have a clear understanding of what you want, research potential colleges. Utilize resources like BigFuture.CollegeBoard.org to gather information about different institutions. Consider factors such as affordability, academics, career outcomes, and campus life. However, remember to prioritize the factors that are most important to you, as different students may have different priorities.
o Affordability: Discuss in detail with your parents about tuition, scholarships, grants, loans, and work-study opportunities. Compare financial aid offers from different schools.
o Academics: Look into the academic reputation of the colleges. Research the majors and programs they offer, and consider how they align with your career goals.
o Career Outcomes: Investigate the career support services each college offers, such as internships, job placement rates, and alumni networks.
3. Evaluate with a Decision Matrix
With your research in hand, evaluate your options. Create a list of pros and cons for each college based on the factors that matter most to you. Consider developing a weighted scoring system or decision matrix to help you objectively compare and rank your options based on your priorities. Factors to evaluate include:
o Academics: Does the school offer a diversity of majors and fields of study? Do the majors align with your potential career options?
o Location: Do you prefer a college close to home or in a new city? Think about the climate, city size, and distance from family. Also, consider out-of-state tuition costs versus in-state tuition costs for publicly funded schools.
o Resources and Support: Evaluate the support systems available, such as mental health services, career centers, and academic tutoring.
o Campus Culture: Consider the social environment and extracurricular activities. Will you feel comfortable and engaged on campus?
4. Seek Diverse Perspectives
Before making a final decision, seek input from trusted, knowledgeable sources. This could be a teacher, counselor, mentor, even current college students, or alumni who know you well and can offer an objective perspective. They might highlight aspects you had not considered.
5. Visit the Campuses
If possible, visit the campuses of your top choices over the summer. A visit can give you a real feel for the environment and help you visualize yourself there. Pay attention to the facilities, talk to current students, and attend any informational sessions.
6. Make an Informed Decision
After gathering all the information and input, it is time to make your decision. Choose the safety, target, and reach colleges that best fit your academic, financial, and personal needs. Remember, these choices are about finding the right environment where you can thrive and reduce your chances of becoming part of the dropout statistic.
7. Prepare Applications Strategically
Once you have narrowed down your college choices, prepare your applications strategically. Write and finalize your application essays, highlighting your achievements and aspirations. Obtain and submit any required letters of recommendation. Submit the Free Application for Federal Student Aid to explore financial aid options. Ensure you meet all application deadlines and requirements for each college on your list. According to a CollegeRaptor.com article, the next step after your application submissions is to check and follow-up on the status of your applications.
Call to Action
The journey to selecting the right college is a critical decision that will shape your future success and happiness. By approaching this decision with a problem-solving mindset, you have the power to navigate the complexities and make an informed choice that aligns with your goals, needs, and aspirations. Embrace this process with confidence, knowing that your diligence and strategic approach will lead you to the right college fit, where you can thrive and achieve your full potential.

The Moral Vanguard: U.S. College Students' Righteous Struggle for Palestinian Human Rights
By Valarie R. Austin, May 28th, 2024, 14:00 PM EDT
(Previously Published on LinkedIn)
The Anguished Voices of Protest
During this iteration of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, outraged voices rise in defiant protest across U.S. campuses against the unfolding tragedy in Gaza. University and college students demand an end to the indiscriminate bloodshed and suffering of Palestinian civilians, especially the most vulnerable. Notably, Green Party Presidential candidate Jill Stein was arrested for participating in a Pro-Palestinian protest. The mostly peaceful, pro-Palestinian college protesters are not Anti-Israel or pro-Hamas; they are anti-war, demand a permanent ceasefire, and advocate for human rights. Despite peaceful vigils, encampments and sit-ins, these young activists have faced violent crackdowns, with over 1,300 arrests from April 1-28 alone. Yet their resolve remains unbroken.
The Origins: Hamas Attack and Israeli Response
On October 7th, 2023, Hamas launched a brutal, terrorist attack on Israel, resulting in 1,200 civilian deaths and kidnapped hostages with many who have still not been returned. While condemning this heinous act, the protesters argue that Israel's response has been disproportionate and indiscriminate.
Humanity's Cry amid the Carnage
Israel's military campaign has devastated Gaza. Over 34,735 Palestinian lives lost, 78,108 more injured in what appears to be a campaign aimed at potential ethnic cleansing through displacement of Palestinians from their homes. The Israeli invasion has destroyed 57% of buildings in the Gaza Strip and 75% in Gaza City, including schools, housing, hospitals, and religious centers, leaving large areas uninhabitable without essentials like electricity and water. Amid this horror, Palestinian children bear the deepest psychological scars - pervasive PTSD, depression and anxiety, according to psychiatric experts. These young survivors have lost family, homes, and futures amidst the rubble.
The Deadly Cost of Silence
The mainstream media has tried to silence these cries for justice, falsely portraying the protesters as threatening and pro-Hamas terrorist sympathizers. This insidious tactic seeks to discredit those demanding human rights and turn Americans against their fellow citizens exercising free speech. In contrast, key allies like Turkey have suspended trade with Israel over the crisis. Jordan's Queen Rania condemned the double standards in a MSNBC interview, voicing global outrage. Gravely, the International Criminal Court (ICC) has requested charges against top Hamas and Israeli leaders, including Prime Minister Netanyahu, for alleged war crimes after extensive investigations.
Legal and Ethical Considerations
Disturbingly, as Israel’s government and IDF prepares to escalate by invading and bombing Rafah, which shelters 1.7 million displaced Palestinians, the U.S. approved $19 billion in additional military aid in April to Israel. This action overrides the U.S. Leahy Law, prohibiting aid to military units committing gross violations of international law. President Biden's contradictory stance undermines peace efforts. Although he has called for a ceasefire, President Joe Biden has expressed unconditional support for Israel despite allegations of mass starvation and military attacks on civilian centers in Gaza. His lack of decisive action on behalf of Palestinian civilians and a permanent ceasefire has drawn intense anger from elements of his Democratic Party base, Independents and Republicans.
Historical Context and U.S. Interests
In archival footage from the Richard Nixon Foundation, President Richard Nixon warned that "American Presidents must always think first of what is best for America" in relation to foreign policy. In this latest instance, the prioritization of Israeli interests, especially in light of its government and military's alleged war crimes, is contrary to the broader American interests of peace in the Middle East and the Islamic world. Those interests extend, especially, to the protection of non-combatants during war in accordance with international law.
The Moral Courage to Act
The college students protesting are the moral conscience of our nation, bravely exercising their First Amendment rights to demand justice. Their diverse backgrounds, including Jews, Muslims, Christians, and Arabs, unite in sounding the alarm over this humanitarian catastrophe perpetrated with our tax dollars. Although portrayed as Anti-Semitic, the vast majority of protests are not motivated by hatred towards Jewish people, but for anti-war and humanity. As American citizens, we cannot turn a blind eye. We must demand our leaders uphold human rights over political expediency by contacting representatives and voting accordingly. Other civil actions to consider include supporting humanitarian efforts, attending or organizing peaceful protests, or engaging with relevant advocacy groups. Defending Palestinian lives is not anti-Semitic or anti-American, but an affirmation of democratic values - the equal human dignity of all people. Let us join these young activists' moral fight to ensure our nation's actions reflect its highest ideals of justice. Have a great and meaningful summer!

Graduation Season Alert: How to Keep New Teen Drivers Safe on the Road
By Valarie R. Austin, May 20th, 2024, 11:00 PM EDT
(Previously Published on LinkedIn)
The sound of screeching tires and crunching metal are all too familiar sounds, reminding us of the dangers new teen drivers face on the roads. For many teens, driving represents a transition from high school to college and a milestone of independence. According to a 2024 Moneygeek.com article, teen drivers make up approximately 3.7% of all drivers in the United States, which translates to 8.3 million drivers aged between 16 and 19 years old. Yet, during the high-risk high school graduation season, their inexperience can lead to tragic consequences. In 2022 alone, National Safety Council data indicated that there were 2,034 young driver fatalities; 1,033 fatalities among passengers of young drivers; 1,608 fatalities to occupants of all other vehicles; and 664 non-occupant fatalities. Ensuring novice driver’s safety on the road is crucial not only for avoiding accidents but also for preserving their potential to succeed in college and beyond. Safe driving practices can protect their lives as well as their future academic and career goals.
Distracted Driving: A Silent Threat
Distracted driving is one of the most significant threats to teen drivers today. Marketwatch.com reports that 8% of distracted driving accidents involving teens are due to cell phone use, making it a prevalent issue. Cell phones, however, are not the only culprit. Texting, adjusting music, eating, or even engaging in conversations with passengers can divert a driver's attention from the road. A common scenario is a teen driver taking a bite of food, leading to a spill and instinctively looking down. Taking their eyes off the road momentarily, they could rear-end the car in front, causing a collision. The consequences extend far beyond the immediate crash, resulting in astronomical medical costs. According to a U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report, distracted driving among teens led to about $40.7 billion in combined medical costs and cost estimates for lives lost in 2020.
Moreover, having peer passengers in the car can greatly increase the chances of a crash due to eyes and attention drifting to the passengers. Limiting the number of peer passengers can reduce distractions and improve safety on the road. The high fatality and injury rates of teen drivers, coupled with the immense financial burden, highlight the urgent need for teens to eliminate distractions while driving.
Impaired Driving: A Fatal Mistake
Impaired driving is another critical concern. Despite being illegal for those under 21, alcohol consumption remains a factor in many teen driving accidents. In 2020, the CDC reported 29% of drivers aged 15-20 who were killed in crashes had been drinking. Driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs can severely impair a driver's abilities in several ways. These include slow reaction times, such as delayed braking or steering in response to hazards. Alcohol also impairs decision-making abilities, reducing a driver's capacity to assess risks and make sound judgments on the road.
Additionally, according to a CDC fact sheet, driving at night between midnight and 3 a.m., particularly on a Saturday or Sunday, puts teens at a higher risk of a crash. Teens driving at night might be tired and have poor visibility. For teens attending late-night weekend parties, this risk is further amplified. A possible solution is the use of shared ride services such as Uber Teen Accounts, which are tied to their guardians' credit card. Shared ride services can provide an alternative to driving impaired or being a passenger in a car with an impaired driver. Parents, a sober friend, or a taxi service can also be on speed dial for a pick-up call. It is crucial to educate teens about these options to prevent impaired driving incidents.
Speeding: A Deadly Temptation
Speeding significantly increases the risk of accidents and fatalities among teen drivers. The higher the collision speed can result in more serious consequences in terms of injury and material damage. Speeding not only reduces the time a driver has to react to potential hazards but also increases vehicle stopping distance and the force of a collision, leading to more severe injuries or fatalities. Moreover, speeding diminishes the effectiveness of safety features like seat belts and airbags. An EMC insurance.com article explained “For every 10 mph of increased speed, the risk of dying in a crash doubles.” Enforcing speed limits can help mitigate these risks. Encouraging teens to understand the physics behind speeding and the potentially devastating consequences can promote safer driving habits.
No Seat Belt Usage: An Avoidable Risk
One of the simplest yet most effective safety measures is using seat belts. Unfortunately, many teens neglect this practice. The CDC reports that 56% of teens who died in car crashes in 2020 were not wearing seat belts at the time. New drivers may be following the example of adult drivers, such as parents, whom they have observed not using seat belts every time. Promoting consistent seat belt use can dramatically reduce fatalities and serious injuries in accidents.
Call to Action
Parents, educators, and community leaders ought to talk to teens about the hazards of driving impaired, distracted, or speeding. Encourage the use of seat belts at all times and limit the number of peer passengers in the car. Implementing and reinforcing these safety measures can significantly reduce accidents and save lives. Additionally, new or inexperienced drivers need to understand the hazards of the road and remember that practice and experience over time will make them better drivers. Do not rush it; take your time to learn and drive responsibly. Your well-being and the well-being of others depend on your patience and attentiveness on the road.
By fostering a culture of patience, awareness, and continuous learning, we can help new drivers navigate the roads more safely and confidently. Let's work together to protect our young drivers and make our roads safer for everyone. Taking appropriate actions and offering practical guidance will ensure they can reach their college goals and future aspirations without unnecessary hindrance. Have a great, safe summer!

Unlock the Power of Public Speaking for Career Success
By Valarie R. Austin, May 16th, 2024, 9:45 PM EDT
(Previously Published on LinkedIn)
Introduction
According to WorldMetrics.org, 60% of employers consider public speaking skills a key workforce competency. Yet, for many professionals, the mere thought of standing in front of an audience induces a sense of dread. With over 21 years of military experience, membership in Toastmasters International, and active participation in the Maryland Career Development Association, I have witnessed firsthand the transformative power of effective communication – and the consequences of its absence. Lack of public speaking proficiency can hinder career advancement, stifle leadership potential, and undermine one's ability to convey complex ideas with clarity and confidence. As a career and college readiness workshop facilitator, I have developed and conducted a successful public speaking workshop for high school students. As a result, I have seen how this invaluable skill can be nurtured and mastered, preparing them for future success in the workforce and aligning with the high demand for public speaking competency.
The Importance of Public Speaking in Leadership
Public speaking is crucial for transforming thoughts into clear, structured ideas and conveying them effectively, especially for leaders in the workplace. As individuals climb the career ladder, their ability to communicate these ideas clearly and confidently becomes increasingly important. Leaders often need to present to clients, subordinates, and supervisors; manage conferences; and explain company policies. When team members struggle with public speaking, the responsibility often falls unfairly onto others. This imbalance can cause stress and hinder team performance. Effective communication should be a shared skill within a team to ensure everyone contributes equally and projects succeed.
As a member of Toastmasters, I have seen first-time members struggle with delivering even a 1-2 minute introduction speech, maintaining eye contact with the audience, or staying within the allotted time limit for a speech. Through consistent practice and regular delivery of speeches, I also have witnessed remarkable improvement. These individuals, now experienced Toastmasters, have become confident, more accomplished presenters and increasingly valuable team members/leaders in their careers.
Practical Solutions for Improving Public Speaking
Improving public speaking skills is essential. There are several practical steps one can take to develop these necessary abilities such as:
• Research and understand your topic thoroughly
• Organize your speech with an introduction, body, and conclusion
• Use anecdotes, quotes, and personal stories
• Rehearse in front of a mirror, friend, or co-worker
• Incorporate pauses and gestures
• Stay calm through deep breathing and relaxation methods
• Learn from experience and keep improving
No one is born a great speaker. Those who excel in public speaking and can persuade others must invest time and dedication to master this essential leadership skill.

Public Speaking: Overcoming the Fear
By Valarie R. Austin, March 29th, 2024, 1:30 PM EDT
(Previously Published on LinkedIn)
Regrettably, the lack of public speaking courses in many middle and high schools allows students to avoid this necessary skill. In the U.S., numerous students are often treated as passive recipients of knowledge by their teachers. These students journey through each grade level until high school graduation and remain unseen and unheard in the classroom. Consequently, the fear of drawing attention and speaking in public can develop into a debilitating phobia known as glossophobia. According to the National Social Anxiety Center (NSAC), glossophobia is characterized by “a deep-seated anxiety about being judged or negatively evaluated by others.” In my book, “The Student’s Comprehensive Guide for College & Other Life Lessons,” I emphasize that individuals tend to prefer undergoing a root canal rather than addressing a group of people. In fact, NASC ranks glossophobia among the most common fears, surpassing even the fear of death, spiders, or heights. Public speaking anxiety often stems from a fear of the unknown, which, although irrational, holds significant power as it magnifies the fear of speaking in front of an audience. A 2023 CrossRiverTherapy.com online article asserted that glossophobia, or the fear of public speaking, affects a staggering “200 million or 75% of the U.S. population.” Teens are uniquely susceptible to public speaking anxiety because often they are under stress to respond to a question without having the tools to succeed. Over time, the impact of this fear can be detrimental to a young person's academic success and self-esteem.
It is essential for adolescents to participate in structured, supportive public speaking activities to boost their confidence and self-esteem. Young adults should be introduced to public speaking at an early age just like they are initiated to various healthy foods, such as broccoli or Brussels sprouts. Ultimately, like eating vegetables, becoming familiar with public speaking is beneficial for their personal growth. Psycom.net offers two valuable tips to overcome the fear of public speaking: preparation and practice. By participating in classroom instruction, library programs, and other similar activities, students can learn the art of delivering speeches, conducting research, organizing their thoughts, and responding to impromptu questions. Another avenue for teens to enhance their public speaking skills and boost their confidence is by participating in competitive debate teams, school clubs, sports teams, student government, or additional extracurricular leadership opportunities. Confidence stems from the belief in one's competence and abilities to accomplish a given task. As young people experience success and progress, they will gradually develop the mindset of "I can handle this" when faced with speaking in public. Exceptional communicators are not born with innate skills but rather acquire the necessary verbal abilities to inspire and influence others. Cited by Forbes online, Warren Buffet stated in an interview, "If you can't effectively communicate and convey your ideas to others, you're limiting your potential." In essence, individuals lacking proficiency in verbal communication may miss out on numerous opportunities to shine in front of an audience.
People are naturally drawn to confident leaders who possess strong communication skills. Effective communication enables individuals to express their thoughts and ideas clearly to others. Whether college students or new employees, their ability to communicate with peers, professors, and supervisors is crucial. In such situations, remaining silent is not advantageous. For example, many college professors give participation points to students who actively contribute to classroom discussions. Students who choose not to participate miss out on an opportunity to showcase their leadership and communication skills. Professors are more likely to write letters of recommendation for internships or graduate programs when they remember the requesting students who actively participated in class. Therefore, students who excel in public speaking are more likely to achieve academic success and open up more opportunities for themselves. Additionally, mastering public speaking can enhance problem-solving skills. Communication involves active problem-solving, as individuals must analyze questions and provide thoughtful responses. Some people may struggle to respond to questions in front of a group, even if they are knowledgeable on the subject. In contrast, skilled public speakers can listen attentively, consider different replies, and confidently deliver the best answer. In various fields such as politics, education, and the news media, those with strong public speaking abilities can inspire confidence in their audience through their answers. In business, the military and other industries, effective communication through speeches, presentations, or stories can pave the way for greater recognition, rewards, and career advancement.
Teens and young adults can develop their public speaking skills by practicing and preparing for the experience. They should take advantage of public speaking opportunities through participation in extracurricular activities or enrolling in communication workshops/courses. There are numerous lucrative career fields for talented communicators. Companies seek individuals who can effectively convey their ideas and motivate others to support their vision. All young people should master the techniques required to address an audience. Proficient public speaking skills are indispensable. I challenge young people to begin with small steps, such as speaking up in class, to enhance their confidence and showcase their intelligence. You can do it!
