What Young Americans Need to Know About the 2025 Israel-Iran Crisis: A Military Professional's Assessment
By Valarie R. Austin, July 1st, 2025, 12:30 PM EDT
(Previously Published on LinkedIn)
The Israel-Iran crisis that erupted in June 2025 is not just another Middle Eastern conflict. For young Americans considering careers in Foreign Service, military service, or international relations, this crisis reveals how foreign policy decisions made today will shape the challenges you inherit tomorrow.
I. A Crisis That Changes Everything
On June 13, 2025, Israel launched a surprise military airstrike on Iran's capital, Tehran, and other locations. The attack targeted multiple nuclear facilities, such as Fordow, as well as senior Iranian military officials, scientists, aid workers, and civilian sites. Reuters News reported over 935 people killed including 132 women and 38 children in Iran. In retaliation, Iran launched counterstrikes that killed 79 Israelis.
The Israeli bombing was not a skirmish, but continued instigation of ongoing conflict in the Middle East. Israel’s airstrikes were direct attacks on a sovereign nation, conducted without international approval and with U.S. support. Days later, the United States executed its own strikes on three of Iran's nuclear sites in Operation Midnight Hammer , despite a lack of immediate threat to American security.
As a retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel with 21 years of service, I find this sequence deeply troubling. This is not a measured response to a crisis. It is a reckless intervention that undermines diplomacy, international law, and U.S. credibility.
Iran's relationship with the West has been fraught since 1953, when the U.S. Central Intelligence Agency orchestrated a coup that overthrew Iran's democratically elected leader. Relations remained tense after the 1979 Iranian Revolution and subsequent hostage crisis. In 2015, after two years of multi-national negotiation, Iran signed the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), shipping out 25,000 pounds of enriched uranium and allowing international inspections. The U.S. was a major backer of the JCPOA to restrict Iran’s pursuit of nuclear weapons. The deal was working until President Trump withdrew in 2018.
By early 2025, after five rounds of diplomatic talks about Iran’s nuclear program, U.S.-Iran negotiations were scheduled to resume on June 15. On June 13, just two days before these talks, Israel struck preemptively. The tragedy of June 13 is that diplomacy was working. The Israeli attack marked the collapse of months of dialogue between the U.S. and Iran in an instant. Once again, political expediency undermined diplomacy at the moment it was most needed.
II. Intelligence Versus Ideology
What makes this crisis particularly alarming is how professional intelligence was ignored in favor of political narratives.
In March 2025, Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard testified before Congress that Iran was not building a nuclear weapon and that Supreme Leader Ayatollah Khamenei had not reauthorized a weapons program since suspending it in 2003. The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) confirmed this assessment, noting that while Iran had enriched uranium beyond agreed thresholds, there was no evidence of weaponization.
Despite these professional intelligence findings, President Trump approved U.S. strikes on Iranian nuclear facilities. According to Slate News online, Trump had increasingly relied on ideologically aligned media outlets rather than U.S. intelligence assessments for foreign policy decisions.
Having spent two decades evaluating intelligence analysis and policy implementation, I recognize the warning signs when military intervention reflects a pattern of reactive, short-term thinking that risks long term instability. Instead of seizing an opportunity to de-escalate tensions, the U.S. government chose a show of strength, deepening a cycle of retaliation. This is dangerous. Such decisions bypass the rigorous vetting process of the intelligence community and undermine credibility. Foreign policy based on media sensationalism rather than evidence compromises both national security and global stability. This breakdown should concern anyone considering national security careers.
With 40,000 U.S. military personnel stationed throughout the Middle East, even limited escalation could affect American service members and diplomatic personnel in the region. Iran has also shown willingness to let diplomatic momentum collapse entirely when it feels cornered or disrespected.
III. International Law and Double Standards
The legal framework surrounding these strikes reveals troubling double standards that young Foreign Service professionals must understand.
Under the United Nations Charter, armed attacks on sovereign nations are prohibited unless in self-defense or with Security Council authorization. Additionally, the IAEA Director General stated that "any armed attack on and threat against nuclear facilities devoted to peaceful purposes constitutes a violation of the principles of the United Nations Charter, international law and the Statute of the Agency." Yet, Israel conducted an unprovoked attack against a country with known nuclear facilities.
The nuclear nonproliferation framework exposes stark hypocrisy. Iran is a signatory to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT), which places its nuclear program under IAEA oversight. According to the Bulletin of the Atomic Scientists, Israel has never signed the NPT and is widely believed to possess at least 90 undeclared nuclear warheads as of 2022. Israel neither confirms nor denies its nuclear capabilities, evading international scrutiny.
This dichotomy allows Israel to justify aggressive action against Iran under the pretext of preventing nuclear proliferation, while its undeclared stockpile, which remains outside of any formal oversight, undermines that very standard. Additionally, the U.S. attack on Iran during the pretense of diplomatic negotiations, without irrefutable evidence of weapons development, erodes America's moral authority and provides ammunition for geopolitical rivals to accuse the U.S. of selective enforcement.
IV. Academic Freedom Under Pressure
The U.S. Congress' proposed Anti-Semitism Awareness Act represents another troubling development. This legislation expands the definition of anti-Semitism so broadly that it may conflate legitimate policy critique with hate speech. Civil liberties groups and student organizations worry the law will suppress free expression, especially among young Americans protesting U.S. military involvement or Israeli policies.
A recent example highlights this concern. Columbia University student Mohsen Mahdawi, a non-citizen, was detained for his pro-Palestinian activism and anti-war protests. He was released after a judge's order. Cases like this send an alarming message to students nationwide.
Such legislation does not protect Jewish communities from hate. Rather, it protects a foreign government from accountability, creating a chilling effect on debate, protest, anti-war demonstrations, and academic freedom—precisely the kind of critical thinking essential for effective foreign policy careers.
V. Professional Military Standards vs. Political Decisions
Despite my strong criticism of the strategic and political decisions, the U.S. military personnel who conducted these operations deserve recognition for their professionalism and precision. They followed lawful orders from civilian leadership and should not be blamed for policy decisions made above their level.
This distinction is crucial for those considering military service. The military exists to implement policy, not create it. That responsibility lies with elected leaders who must be informed and held accountable by the American people who put them in office. For example, in a recent interview, Senator Ted Cruz recently endorsed U.S. strikes against Iran while characterizing Iran simply as "the enemy," without demonstrating familiarity with current intelligence assessments or available diplomatic alternatives.
Military professionals must understand geopolitical context to execute missions effectively, but the decision-making process involves complex political calculations that extend far beyond military considerations and service. In diplomacy, intelligence work, or international business, professional standards may also conflict with political pressures. Your response to these conflicts will shape your career success.
VI. Career Implications for Your Generation
For Future Foreign Service Officers:
o This crisis demonstrates how politicized intelligence undermines diplomatic effectiveness.
o Be prepared to advocate for evidence-based policy, even when it conflicts with political preferences.
For International Relations Students:
o The gap between official policy and ground truth reveals why critical analysis matters more than accepting narratives.
o Your generation will face the consequences of decisions made without regard for international law.
For Military Career Prospects:
o Understanding how policy decisions create operational environments helps you serve more effectively.
o Comprehensive situational awareness and pre-mission briefings are essential. Accurate battle damage assessments (BDA) for nuclear targets require multiple intelligence sources and take days or weeks—yet political narratives may demand instant "success" stories. For instance, despite immediate claims of "total destruction," satellite imagery suggested Iran may have relocated materials beforehand.
For All Students:
o Economic, security, and diplomatic consequences of political and military decisions will affect your professional future regardless of career path.
VII. The Broader Pattern of Failed Strategy
This conflict represents more than a single policy failure. It reflects a pattern where short-term political considerations override long-term strategic thinking. The same pattern led to failed interventions in Iraq, Libya, Yemen, Afghanistan, and elsewhere.
Mainstream American media have largely failed to provide critical analysis, often framing U.S. strikes as successful while omitting key facts about their effectiveness, legality, the cost to taxpayers, and the human toll. Meanwhile, outlets like Fox Business, the Christian Broadcasting Network News and the 700 Club present a distorted narrative about Iran’s nuclear program and its aims. These organizations frequently ignore key intelligence concerns and downplay the lack of transparency or urgency behind the military strikes. This type of media distortion, amplified across conservative and religious platforms, reinforces a climate of manufactured consent. It enables policymakers to act without robust public debate, weakening democratic accountability. As a result, young Americans are left with an inaccurate picture of the stakes and motivations behind U.S. military action.
Young Americans must ask: Who benefits from these conflicts? Why are certain nations allowed to act with impunity while others face military action? Why does diplomacy consistently take second place to military solutions? What is the main stream media and social media influencers’ motivation in generating calls for war?
VIII. Your Voice Matters
Vote strategically:
o Research candidates' positions on diplomatic versus military solutions.
o Your vote shapes whether America chooses engagement or endless conflict.
Stay informed:
o Read diverse sources, including international perspectives.
o Follow professional analysts who prioritize facts over ideology.
Engage thoughtfully:
o Join issue-based forums.
o Participate in local town halls.
o Write to your representatives.
o Support organizations that promote peaceful diplomacy and free speech.
Consider public service:
o The foreign policy establishment needs fresh perspectives and principled professionals.
IX. The Stakes for Your Generation
This crisis is more about power, perception, and political calculation than protecting American security. The ripple effects will shape global economic conditions, U.S. credibility, and the integrity of future international coalitions.
The choices made today will influence your generation's opportunities and challenges for decades to come. Understanding how those decisions are made and demanding better is your right as citizens and your responsibility as future leaders. The time to choose is now: between diplomacy and military escalation, between truth and political spin, and between accountability and impunity. Your actions today will help create the future you hope to build.

Why Patriots Must Oppose the Transgender Military Purge
By Valarie R. Austin, May 13th, 2025, 1:30 PM EDT
(Previously Published on LinkedIn)
As a retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel, I am dismayed by the Department of Defense's new policy to dismiss transgender service members. As of December 2024, approximately 4,240 transgender individuals who serve in uniform face discharge. This immoral and unconstitutional purge is not based on performance, conduct, or national security. It is rooted in prejudice. Once again politics has hijacked military policy, targeting a small, misunderstood population to score points with extremist constituencies. This action is happening now. Silence is complicity.
The harm is not theoretical. The Advocates for Trans Equality website defines transgender as “a broad term that can be used to describe people whose gender identity is different from the gender they were thought to be when they were born.” Transgender Americans, who make up less than 1% of the adult population, are being expelled from military service despite meeting the same standards as everyone else. They are being punished solely for who they are and a ripe target for conservative policymakers.
Religious beliefs may guide individuals, but they must never be used to deny constitutional rights within public institutions like the military. Our military exists to defend liberty for all Americans. The military must not selectively deny that liberty based on religious objections. Most true religions teach a doctrine of respect and love for all individuals, no matter their gender, race, or religious affiliation.
The Military Is No Place for Ideological Purges
Transgender service members are not being dismissed for disciplinary issues or failing to meet mission standards. The Department of Defense (DoD) has provided no evidence of poor performance or risk to readiness. In fact, the DoD has invested millions of dollars in military training and career advancement without a transparent plan to backfill their positions, which may become vacant within 30 to 60 days. According to Modern Military Association of America, the DoD may spend billions in tax payer dollars to discharge and replace these trained service members over the next 20 years.
DoD Secretary Pete Hegseth, recently appointed under the current administration, delivered a speech riddled with political rhetoric rather than facts to U.S. Special Operations Command personnel. He invoked slogans about ending “wokeness” and “weakness” in the military while he disparaged transgender troops with offensive characterizations. Secretary Hegseth also promised to return the military to undefined standards and a revisionist ideal of the "warrior ethos.” These statements ignore the modern military’s reliance on diversity, intelligence, and strategic thought.
Let us be clear. The U.S. military’s success is not based solely on combat arms. It depends on military members in logistics, communications, cyber operations, intelligence, civil affairs, medical fields, and a myriad of other support roles across the services. Although these support roles are indirect to the lethality on the battlefield, they enable the warfighting capability of the different combat elements. Hegseth’s vision ignores the complexity and professionalism of modern joint operations.
From Segregation to “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell:” History’s Warning
We have seen this before. The military has a long history of exclusion, specifically racial segregation until 1948, marginalization of women before the 1970’s, the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy imposed on gay and lesbian troops, and a prior ban on transgender service under President Trump in 2019. Each of these policies was eventually recognized as discrimination, not sound policy.
Now, history repeats itself with transgender service members in a January 2025 White House Executive Order that bans new transgender recruits and discharges transgender individuals from the military. The American Medical Association affirms that transgender identity is a normal human variation and not a disorder. Gender Dysphoria, which is a medical term for psychological distress, comes from the incongruence between one’s sex assigned at birth and one’s gender identity. Gender Dysphoria impacts some transgender people, but typically can be successfully treated. Adult transgender service members serve with honor, patriotism, and skill. Yet, under the current directive, they are cast aside as if they are unfit by default. This is not just policy. It is moral failure by officially authorizing discrimination in violation of the Equal Protection Clause under the Fifth Amendment.
In my 21 years of service, I saw firsthand how silencing identity under "Don't Ask, Don't Tell," harmed morale. Dedicated troops lived in fear, which undermined cohesion or the very thing the policy claimed to protect. Today's transgender ban repeats that mistake with even greater cruelty.
The Myth of Military Readiness
Supporters of the ban claim that it protects military readiness. This claim lacks factual support. In 2018, the chiefs of all military branches stated there were no issues with transgender troops serving openly. Studies, including a 2020 Palm Center Public Policy study, found no impact on cohesion or effectiveness.
So what has changed? Only the politics of those in power.
The current policy has replaced evidence with emotion, and inclusivity with intolerance. The administration’s decisions will remove experienced professionals and degrade morale. This decision is in line with recent firings of high-ranking officers for no apparent reason beyond their race or gender. The Joint Chiefs of Staff now lack diversity, reducing the range of talent and perspectives needed to solve complex challenges. Independent thought is being purged in favor of partisan loyalty, not to the Constitution.
While the military dismisses qualified transgender professionals, 91% of Fortune 500 companies, such as IBM and Goldman Sachs, embrace inclusion as a driver of innovation and mission effectiveness.
Weaponizing “Wokeness” Against Patriots
The decision’s vague references to “wokeness” are nothing more than camouflage for exclusion. Transgender troops are being painted with a broad, harmful brush, without regard for individual records or contributions. Globally, transgender military members have served with distinction, such as Anastasia Biefang, the first transgender battalion commander in the German Army, an allied partner.
The cruelty of this purge extends beyond the service members themselves. It tears apart families, disrupts units, and sends a chilling message that the military rewards conformity over character. Those who speak out are fired. Those who stay silent are complicit. Instead of focusing on the well-being and economic stability of average Americans, this administration is focused on division, culture wars, and disrespect for an already marginalized class of people. This purge is a distraction and an affront to members who serve.
Let me address one particularly dishonest argument: We are discussing adult service members who have undergone rigorous background checks and security clearances. The inflammatory rhetoric about "grooming children" has no relevance to military service by transgender adults. These patriots are not threatening children, but are protecting them through their military service. Those who conflate adult autonomy with child welfare concerns are either misinformed or deliberately deceptive.
From Tailhook to Today: Regressing, Not Progressing
The 1991 Tailhook scandal, involving widespread sexual misconduct by Navy and Marine Corps officers, exposed a culture of impunity. It took public outrage and Congressional hearings to force accountability. Today’s rollback of transgender acceptance in the military ranks and diversity, equity and inclusion efforts risks undoing decades of progress.
Why Transgender Troops Serve and Why We Must Defend Them
Transgender troops serve for the same reasons as anyone else: love of country, family tradition, educational opportunity, or a desire to contribute to something greater. Their motivations are no different, and many serve with distinction and valor.
According to UCLA’s Williams Institute, nearly 1.3 million adult Americans identify as transgender or gender nonconforming. In the military, relatively few have self-identified, but even this has triggered an overreaction fueled by political scapegoating. The truth is simple. If they meet the standards, they should be allowed to serve.
This Is About All of Us
Do not be fooled. This is not just about transgender people. It is about who gets to be American, who gets to serve, and who has constitutional rights. If the government can strip away rights from one group of U.S. citizens based on prejudice, it can do it to others. Today it is transgender troops. Tomorrow it could be African-Americans, immigrants, Muslims, political opponents, or women.
The conservative-dominated Supreme Court has refused to intervene, allowing this injustice to proceed while a lawsuit brought by transgender service members works its way through the courts. The Supreme Court typically gives deference to military restrictions if they can show it is based on the needs of the military. The Court’s inaction echoes the failures of Plessy v. Ferguson, an infamous decision that allowed racial segregation to flourish under a false sense of legal neutrality.
Call to Action: Speak Up Before It Is Too Late
If you believe in fairness, integrity, and service, you cannot stay silent. This purge is not just wrong. In an April 2025 letter to Secretary Hegseth, U.S. Senator Tammy Duckworth (D-IL), who is a combat veteran and a member of both the Senate Armed Services and Veterans’ Affairs Committees, condemned the transgender military service ban as un-American and unconstitutional.
Here is how you can take action:
- Contact your Representatives. Urge Congress to investigate and stop the purge. Reach out to members of the Senate Armed Services Committee.
- Support Transgender Rights Organizations. Groups like the Advocates for Trans Equality, Trans Youth Emergency Project, and the Modern Military Association of America are fighting for justice.
- Veterans, Speak Out. Use your voice and credibility. We took an oath to defend the Constitution, not the ideology of any one party.
- Share This Message. Awareness matters. The more people know, the more pressure we can create.
Conclusion: Defend What Truly Makes Us Strong
The transgender military ban goes beyond politics and political parties. It is about values and right versus wrong. A military that excludes talented and capable individuals based on identity is weaker, not stronger. A nation that embraces diversity is more resilient, not less. Every American citizen who is of good moral character and capability should be allowed to serve this country with honor and distinction.
We need every voice, especially those of us who have worn the uniform, to rise against this injustice. Stand for the Constitution. Stand for your fellow service members. Stand for what is right. I took an oath to defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic. Today, that oath compels me to speak out. The ban on transgender troops is bad policy and an affront to our values, our readiness, and our republic.

Abolishing the Department of Education: A Direct Threat to Your Professional Future
(Previously Published on LinkedIn)
Imagine waking up to find that your college financial aid is delayed, your loan servicer is unreachable, and your school has fewer resources than ever before. For millions of students, this is not just policy talk. It is about whether they can afford college, continue their education, or access critical support services. Nationwide, countless students rely on federal financial support from the U.S. Department of Education (DOE) to afford college, technical schools, and career training. Whether you dream of becoming a doctor, lawyer, engineer, or pursuing a skilled trade, access to education is what makes it possible.
Colin Powell once famously stated, "You break it, you own it," a principle known as the "Pottery Barn Rule." This warning could not be more relevant today as the Trump Administration pushes to eliminate the DOE without a clear plan for what comes next.
Dismantling Without a Plan
The Department of Education was established by Congress in 1979 through the "Department of Education Organization Act" to expand federal funding in education and help racial minorities, women, people with disabilities, and non-English speaking students gain equal access to education. Today, the Department serves over 50 million K-12 students and provides financial assistance to more than 12 million post-secondary students across the nation. Despite its critical mission, the DOE now faces an unprecedented threat. Critics have long advocated for its elimination, citing educational federalism, local innovation, and expanded parental choice through charter schools and private education options. To fulfill a campaign promise, President Trump has turned a threat of eliminating the DOE in his first term into actual action.
The dismantling process had already begun about two weeks ago when the Senate swiftly confirmed a new DOE Secretary who aligned with the administration's agenda. The DOE was slashed in half, with over 1,300 employees laid off, including more than 300 from the Office of Federal Student Aid. The Office for Civil Rights has been gutted. Yesterday, President Trump signed an Executive Order to abolish the DOE, a move spearheaded by the unsanctioned Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), led by Elon Musk. Operating without Congressional approval, DOGE has moved to dismantle the DOE to help fund $4.5 trillion in tax cuts for the ultra-wealthy.
According to the Congressional Research Service, when Congress eliminates an agency, "it has also made some determination about whether or not the federal government will continue to carry out the functions that had been the statutory responsibility of the abolished agency." No such plan exists for the DOE's essential functions, creating dangerous uncertainty for millions of students and families who rely on these services.
What This Means for You as a Student or Young Professional
If you are a student or recent graduate, this decision affects you directly. The DOE facilitates your financial aid, student loans, disability accommodations, and educational protections. All of these functions are now at serious risk. You may not think much about the DOE daily, but if you've submitted the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) form, received a Pell Grant, or taken out a student loan, you've relied on this agency. Without the DOE's crucial role in making education accessible to all, you stand to lose:
o Federal Financial Aid Delays: FAFSA® delays will leave millions of students waiting for grants and loans they depend on.
o Student Loan Disruptions: Without DOE oversight, loan repayment options will shrink, and predatory lenders will fill the gap.
o Greater Inequality in Education: Public schools in wealthier areas will thrive while underfunded schools struggle without federal resources.
o Fewer Protections for Students with Disabilities: The rollback of disability protections will leave students without needed support.
o Limited Access to Professional Careers: Higher education costs will soar, closing off opportunities for countless people.
These consequences and uncertainty may appear as soon as the 2025-2026 academic year, when students and parents applying for financial aid could face significant disruptions in the system that millions rely on annually for their education.
America's Global Standing at Risk
Education drives national success. The United States ranked 16th out of 81 countries in science and fell behind multiple Asian nations in math during recent international assessments. Without federal funding, access to high-quality STEM education will shrink. This will limit our pipeline of skilled professionals even as other nations strengthen theirs. This increases reliance on foreign talent for high-paying jobs. With annual operations costing $218.4 billion in fiscal year 2024, eliminating the DOE jeopardizes a significant national investment in our future competitiveness.
When educational opportunities reach all Americans, our entire nation benefits through increased innovation, a broader talent pool, and stronger communities. This equal access to quality education is precisely what is threatened as federal oversight diminishes.
The Creation of an Educational Caste System
As federal oversight diminishes, we're witnessing a troubling shift toward school choice and privatization. Many politicians pushing these initiatives gain through campaign funding for election to office. Their wealthy donors and interest groups profit when the U.S. government frees up federal funding that is earmarked for the DOE, and uses it on school choice initiatives instead of public school programs.
This will create an educational caste system---one serving the wealthy, the other leaving everyone else behind in underfunded schools. The DOE was designed to level the playing field, ensuring that education is a right, not a privilege.
What Can You Do?
The fight for your education is not over. You have the power to fight back:
Short-Term Actions:
o Contact your representatives: Demand they stop the dismantling of the DOE.
o Protest and organize: Raise awareness through demonstrations and social media.
o Stay informed and share: Educate peers and spread the word.
o Advocate for state and local action: Push state legislators to protect educational funding.
Long-Term Actions:
o Vote in every election: Elect leaders who prioritize education.
o Support pro-education leaders: From local school board members to national representatives.
o Get involved with education advocacy groups: Support organizations such as the National Education Association, Alliance for Excellent Education, and EdTrust.
o Attend town halls: Ask representatives, "Where do you stand on dismantling the DOE, and what is your plan to ensure our students do not suffer?"
The Accountability Question: You Break It, You Own It
The dismantling of the DOE is intentional. Voters must directly connect this policy decision to its consequences. The Trump Administration, DOGE, and Republican politicians who orchestrated this attack on education must be held accountable at the ballot box. However, accountability only happens if voters understand the stakes and demand it. Both parties had a role in this predicament. While Republicans pushed for dismantling the DOE, Democrats failed to mount an effective opposition. We must require better from every elected official.
Education is not only about individual success. It is the foundation of opportunity and democracy. The dismantling of the DOE is not an abstract policy decision or campaign promise delivered. It is a direct attack on your future. If Americans care about access to post-secondary education, fair treatment in schools, or ensuring future generations have educational opportunities, the time to act is now. Will we allow the Department of Education to crumble? Or will we fight to protect it?

Government Upheaval: What It Means for Your Career
By Valarie R. Austin, March 1st, 2025, 12:30 PM EDT
(Previously Published on LinkedIn)
If you are a young professional, recent government changes demand your urgent attention. Since Inauguration Day 2025, presidential executive orders have seized Congress's budgetary authority, empowered billionaire Elon Musk to oversee an unsanctioned Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE), and enabled mass firings of federal employees without due process. These actions have destabilized government agencies while Congress advances a $4.7 trillion tax cut proposal primarily benefiting high-income earners. The consequences will extend far beyond the firing of federal employees. If you are a professional in any industry, it is important to understand how these changes affect your career, your financial future, and the country’s economic stability.
How Government Powers Our Economy and Your Career
The federal government maintains important infrastructure, provides disaster relief, and protects national security. It supports essential services including Social Security, Medicare, Medicaid, and national defense that touch every American's life. Despite DOGE's claims about eliminating fraud, waste, and abuse, no evidence supports these assertions.
Thousands of dedicated workers have lost their jobs, communities have been destabilized, and federal services are in disarray. With fewer regulators and auditors watching over government operations, taxpayers face increased vulnerability to corruption rather than protection from it.
Economic Ripple Effects: What Young Professionals Need to Know
The economy was already struggling, with store closures surging 69% in 2024, affecting Macy's, Family Dollar, and CVS. This troubling trend continues with layoffs at Southwest Airlines, Blue Origin, Chevron, and JPMorgan Chase, alongside store closures of Joann Fabrics and Party City in 2025. Consumer confidence has sharply declined as Americans face mounting economic uncertainty.
Now, tens of thousands of fired federal workers, many with specialized expertise, will enter this fragile job market. At the same time, states must find ways to offer employment opportunities or fund unemployment benefits for an influx of claimants who were never budgeted to receive assistance. This crisis affects every state and congressional district where federal agencies contract with local businesses, universities, and vendors. The ripple effects will touch your community, regardless of where you live.
Legal Questions Surrounding Federal Workforce Changes
Beyond the economic turbulence, these disruptive dismissals raise serious legal and constitutional concerns about the executive branch’s expanded power over the federal budget. The White House and DOGE implemented the mass firings based on unclear, capricious standards. Federal employees received no due process and faced vague misconduct allegations with no supporting evidence. Some were given just fifteen minutes to collect belongings, while others were locked out of work computers without explanation. Agencies vital to national security, public health, and disaster response have been crippled. The oversight of infectious disease response/control, educational support to students, and aviation safety is severely compromised. Firing federal workers en masse without succession planning is dangerous.
Beyond the constitutional concerns, these mass dismissals have created a human crisis with particularly severe consequences for one vulnerable group. This purge disproportionately affects military veterans, approximately 30% of fired workers, who transitioned to civilian roles relying on federal employment. Many are disabled and require accommodations rarely offered in the private sector. Their sudden dismissal is an attack on those who have already sacrificed for the country.
Your Action Plan: Steps for Career Protection in Uncertain Times
For young professionals, this situation highlights a harsh reality: job security is an illusion in today's volatile climate. Protect yourself by taking these essential steps:
1. Keep Your Resume Updated so your credentials remain current and marketable.
2. Save at Least Six to Twelve Months of Expenses to build a financial cushion for unexpected layoffs.
3. Know Your Company's Termination Policies to understand your rights and potential severance options.
4. Diversify Your Income Sources by considering freelance work or side gigs.
5. Advocate for Workforce Stability by staying informed about employment policies in your industry.
For fired federal employees, take these immediate steps:
o Contact unions, your state legislators, or legal representation for guidance.
o File for unemployment benefits immediately.
o Explore job search resources like Workforce Development Centers and online resources like LinkedIn, Glassdoor, and Indeed.
o Seek financial relief options, such as loan deferments.
o Join community efforts demanding accountability.
o Prioritize mental wellness by seeking counseling services, support groups, and self-care strategies.
Analyzing Congressional Policy Decisions and Consequences
Despite this unprecedented chaos, Congress has failed to exercise meaningful oversight, subpoena officials, or intervene to prevent further damage. Instead of raising taxes on the ultra wealthy to fund the government and social services, the current legislative priority appears to be a significant tax reduction package, funded by gutting government services and worker protections. For decades, federal workers have faced threats of job instability due to shifting budget priorities. In 2003, the National Treasury Employees Union, which represents federal workers in various departments and agencies, warned against sacrificing federal worker protections to fund tax cuts for the ultra wealthy. The debate remains unresolved today.
Simultaneously, the Congressional opposition response has also been woefully insufficient. Offering job training and resume workshops while not addressing underlying policy issues fails to provide meaningful solutions to this constitutional crisis.
Creating Change: How to Advocate for Workforce Stability
This disaster extends beyond job losses to fundamental questions of proper governance and constitutional authority. With the Continuing Resolution expiring on March 14th, congressional Democrats have one remaining legislative tool: forcing a government shutdown to demand the restoration of federal agencies, their staffing and funding. Your voice matters in this critical moment to let your legislators know your wishes in this fight.
Congress should also:
o Subpoena and require DOGE officials to provide evidence justifying their actions
o Restore oversight mechanisms including Inspectors General
o Enact legislation protecting federal employees from politically motivated dismissals
o Investigate potential privacy violations from unauthorized system access
Conclusion
This moment is a wake-up call for every American, especially young professionals. The federal government workforce has been significantly reduced through executive action with minimal legislative oversight. The economic and social consequences will be substantial unless appropriate action is taken.
Regardless of your profession, the upheaval in government employment will have lasting consequences across industries. Protect your career by strengthening your professional connections, and advocating for fair workforce policies.
Now is the time to act. Contact your representatives and let them know where you stand. Your voice matters. Support workplace protections, and remain actively involved in shaping your professional future. A stable economy and workforce depend on those who are informed, engaged, and stand up for fair employment practices.

The Future of Politics: Why Young Americans Must Break the Two-Party Stranglehold
By Valarie R. Austin, February 11th, 2025, 9:00 PM EDT
(Previously Published on LinkedIn)
For decades, Americans have been forced to choose between the "lesser of two evils"—a false choice that has only perpetuated political stagnation and corruption. In 1939, Frank Capra's "Mr. Smith Goes to Washington" served as a stark warning about the corruption of idealism in politics. The film follows a young, principled senator who arrives in Washington with dreams of serving the people, only to find he must fight against entrenched political graft, media manipulation, and corporate influence. Today, this cautionary tale plays out in real time, as young Americans enter a political system rigged against them, where money and power dictate governance rather than the will of the people.
The stakes could not be higher. In the 2024 general election, approximately 89 million Americans—36% of eligible voters—did not cast ballots. This massive disengagement reflects a growing recognition that both major parties have failed the American people. But this moment in history demands a vigorous response. The time has come for a new movement that prioritizes public service over power, real representation over political theater, and true democracy over oligarchy.
The Two-Party Failure
The Democratic and Republican parties have ceased to function as advocates for the people. Instead, they operate as fundraising machines, focused on winning elections and consolidating power rather than addressing urgent issues like homelessness, affordable healthcare, a living wage, housing affordability, education, wealth inequality, funding foreign proxy wars, and climate change. Both parties trade accountability for self-preservation and power, leaving the electorate with no real choice.
The Democratic Party has manipulated the primary process to eliminate competition, silencing challengers through backroom deals and legal maneuvers while devolving into a leaderless and ineffective party. Meanwhile, the Republican Party has embraced authoritarianism, normalizing corruption and using fear and division to maintain power. Their abandonment of democratic principles has reached new heights in recent weeks. In a controversial move to uncover fraud and waste in government spending, the Trump administration granted billionaire Elon Musk access to federal payroll systems and sensitive citizen data. According to a lawsuit filed by the American Federation of Teachers and other labor unions, Musk’s team illegally hacked into these systems, compromising the privacy of federal employees. The lawsuit further alleges that career civil servants were placed on leave or fired without due process, dismantling key governmental agencies and leaving citizens vulnerable to weakened institutional protections.
For young professionals who value data privacy and institutional integrity, Elon Musk and his teams’ actions represent an unprecedented breach of public trust, setting a dangerous precedent for how billionaire-led corporations can override governmental protections meant to safeguard citizens' rights and career opportunities.
Weaponizing Fear and Division
The Republican Party, in particular, has embraced a strategy of scapegoating marginalized groups to distract from its failure to deliver policies that benefit the average American. This tactic has emboldened extremists and poisoned political discourse across the country.
This strategy is evident in the systematic dismantling of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) programs, which Donald Trump and his supporters have falsely portrayed DEI policies as "reverse discrimination." Instead, these programs allow qualified individuals to have an opportunity to compete for positions on a level playing field within existing anti-discrimination laws. Still, major corporations like Target, Wal-Mart, and McDonald's have scrapped their DEI initiatives under political pressure. Even West Point, the premier U.S. military academy, has disbanded clubs for women and minorities to adhere to these new restrictions. But these attacks on inclusion and diversity are not happening in isolation. They are reinforced and legitimized by corporate media, which thrives on amplifying outrage rather than exposing systemic corruption and discrimination. Rather than serving as a check on power, mainstream news outlets have become complicit in distorting the national discourse.
The public's response has been swift as well as highly visible. On February 5th, 2025, Americans took to the streets in the historic 50501 demonstrations—50 protests, in all 50 states, in one day—to protest the White House’s policies and actions. Despite this widespread resistance, many continue to support these measures because the rhetoric aligns with their perceived grievances that have been strategically amplified by far-right extremists and White supremacist groups.
Corporate Media: Enabling Corruption
Mainstream news outlets are no longer neutral watchdogs; they are corporate entities driven by profit. Large media conglomerates, owned by billion-dollar corporations with vested political interests, prioritize sensationalism and controversy over investigative journalism. Their editorial choices reflect corporate priorities rather than journalistic integrity, creating ideological echo chambers where voters receive one-sided perspectives instead of objective reporting.
This selective accountability shields certain figures from scrutiny while exaggerating or downplaying key issues. The imbalance prevents voters from making fully informed decisions, further entrenching the dysfunction of the two-party system.
Essential Reforms for Real Change
Clear reforms can break the two-party stranglehold, restore integrity and improve transparency to the political system:
1. Term Limits & Age Caps – Implement a 12-year term limit for Congress (six terms for representatives, two terms for senators) and a 20-year term limit for Supreme Court Justices. Employ an age cap of 70 years old to run for elected office.
2. Campaign Finance Reform – Ban direct corporate donations to candidates and establish equitable public election funding.
3. Ranked-Choice Voting – Break the two-party duopoly by allowing third parties to gain traction at the local and state levels before competing nationally. Open state primaries to independent voters. Bar candidates who refuse to participate in debates and town halls from ballots.
4. Shorter Campaign Cycles – Limit election campaigns to six months and cap ad spending to prevent special interest groups and wealthy donors from buying elections.
5. National Voting Accessibility – Make Election Day a federal holiday, expand mail-in and early voting, and ensure drop boxes are widely available to maximize participation.
These reforms work together to dismantle entrenched power structures. While term limits ensure fresh perspectives in government, campaign finance reform prevents wealthy interests from simply buying new politicians. Ranked-choice voting opens the door for alternative voices, while shorter campaigns and improved voting access ensure broader participation in our democracy.
A Future Worth Fighting For
America does not belong to the corporate elite or career politicians—it belongs to the people. The political establishment thrives on young Americans' disengagement, but this moment demands action. The United States stands at a crossroads. Experts warn that American democracy is fragile, vulnerable to corporate and special interest capture. Without systemic change, the country risks continued erosion of democratic institutions and public trust.
Young professionals have the power to disrupt this broken system—but only if they take action. Run for local office. Advocate for reform within your industry. Support organizations pushing for systemic change. Vote in every election. Consider a career in policy, elections, or public service. Every step taken strengthens democracy and weakens the stranglehold of corruption.
The next generation must reject the false choice between two corrupted parties and forge a new path forward. The future of our democracy depends not on those who have failed us, but on young Americans willing to step up, speak out, and take back their political power.

The Tik Tok Ban: Young Adults and the Career Implications
By Valarie R. Austin, January 15th, 2025, 12:30 PM EDT
(Previously Published on LinkedIn)
With over one billion active users worldwide and 170 million in the United States, Tik Tok has become a cornerstone for young adults to consume content, connect with peers, and build careers. Yet on January 19th, 2025, the U.S. government may sever this vital platform, citing national security concerns—a move that threatens career opportunities and, more importantly, free expression in the digital age.
Critics of Tik Tok argue that its ties to ByteDance, its China-based parent company, pose significant risks to national security. The ban supposedly would counteract Chinese laws requiring Chinese companies to cooperate with state intelligence requests. Concerns include the potential misuse of U.S. user data for blackmail, location tracking, and targeted propaganda that can radicalize individuals or manipulate public opinion. In response to these issues, Tik Tok launched “Project Texas” in 2022, a $1.5 billion initiative to safeguard U.S. user data by routing it through Oracle-controlled infrastructure and creating a U.S.-based subsidiary to oversee data security. While these measures aim to mitigate national security risks, lawmakers remain unconvinced. However, banning Tik Tok does little to address broader privacy violations. U.S.-based companies are equally capable of exploiting user data, making the ban feel more like a game of 'whack-a-mole' than a comprehensive solution.
Who Stands to Gain?
Tik Tok’s innovative algorithm and massive user base, which is projected to generate $13 billion in ad revenue for 2024, have disrupted the dominance of platforms like Meta and YouTube. While national security is the stated rationale for the proposed ban, it also aligns with the competitive interests of U.S.-based tech giants. Reports suggest that Meta, the parent company of Facebook and Instagram, has funded campaigns framing Tik Tok as a national security threat. Critics argue this strategy benefits Meta, whose platforms like Instagram Reels compete directly with Tik Tok. If Tik Tok is banned, U.S. social media companies stand to gain significantly in market share, further centralizing power under a few tech giants.
The Impact on Young Adults
For America’s young professionals, Tik Tok has become an essential career development platform. Small business owners use it to drive traffic to their brick-and-mortar stores, content creators build global audiences to monetize their expertise, and educators connect with communities in innovative ways. Beyond these direct career applications, TikTok offers unfiltered access to global events. For instance, its feed has highlighted Israeli military actions in Gaza, providing firsthand accounts that cultivate awareness. This immediate access to diverse content underscores TikTok’s unique value in fostering connection in a digitally connected world.
A ban would disrupt these opportunities, forcing users to migrate to platforms like RedNote and Lemon8, which ironically also have ties to China. U.S.-based platforms like Meta and YouTube may not offer the same accessibility or monetization options, creating an uneven playing field for independent creators. The potential loss of business prospects reflects a larger issue: the growing centralization of information under a few powerful companies, which limits the diversity of voices, independent news feeds, and ideas available to young people.
Why Comprehensive Privacy Legislation is the Answer
Instead of targeting one platform, the U.S. government should prioritize comprehensive privacy legislation that holds all tech companies accountable for how they collect and use data. The lack of federal privacy laws leaves companies like Meta, Google, and Tik Tok free to exploit user data with minimal oversight.
This issue becomes even more pressing when viewed through a generational lens. Tik Tok’s primary audience is aged 18 to 35, yet the average age of Congress is 58 years old, with the Senate averaging 64. This disconnect raises questions about whether policymakers truly understand the platform they seek to ban. Is it easier to ban what they do not value rather than addressing broader concerns through thoughtful legislation?
Censorship and the Free Flow of Ideas
Banning Tik Tok sets a troubling precedent for censorship. The platform has democratized access to information, giving marginalized voices a chance to be heard and challenging traditional media narratives. While this openness carries risks, such as misinformation, it is also essential for promoting an inclusive digital space.
Selective bans risk eroding the diversity of ideas that young people rely on for education, entertainment, and career development. If Tik Tok can be banned, what prevents future targeting of other platforms that challenge the status quo or criticize specific political institutions?
The Path Forward: Practical Actions for Young Adults
The Tik Tok ban represents more than a policy debate; it marks a turning point in how young adults navigate their digital lives and careers. Young people can take actionable steps to influence this debate and protect their digital future:
o Advocate for privacy legislation: Contact elected representatives and express concerns about the implications of the Tik Tok ban.
o Raise awareness through protests: Participate in peaceful demonstrations to highlight broader issues of censorship and privacy rights.
o Push for balanced policymaking: Lobby individually or with groups to demand forward-thinking legislation.
o Engage in electoral politics: From voting to running for office, take steps to shape technology policy directly.
o Stay informed: Understand how social media apps and platforms collect and manage personal user data, including location, search history, and message content.
These actions empower young adults to shape a digital landscape that values privacy, innovation, and the free flow of ideas. The question is not whether Tik Tok is safe, but whether the proposed solutions address the real challenges of the digital age like privacy protections or simply mask them with censorship.

A Warning to America: Leadership, Loyalty, and Lessons for Young Professionals
By Valarie R. Austin, December 20th, 2024, 4:30 PM EDT
(Previously Published on LinkedIn)
Leadership decisions at the highest levels do not just affect policymakers—they directly shape the opportunities and futures of young professionals. In today’s political climate, the lessons of power, money, and public service are clearer than ever. Understanding these dynamics is critical for building a career rooted in integrity and fairness.
Benedict Arnold: A Lesson in Betrayal and Ambition
During my years attending the United States Military Academy at West Point, I studied one of America’s most infamous betrayals. Benedict Arnold, once a decorated military leader, conspired to surrender West Point, a critical military post, to the British in exchange for money and recognition. His actions jeopardized the young nation’s security and left others to clean up the damage.
Today’s lack of transparency during the continuing resolution’s last-minute debacle enables modern leaders to prioritize private interests over public welfare. Like Arnold's willingness to compromise West Point's defenses for personal gain, we see this same pattern playing out as political leaders show similar disregard for government stability in pursuit of their own interests.
The Crisis of Transparency in Governance
The recent continuing resolution crisis provides a troubling modern parallel of jeopardizing the nation’s security. This time with a government shut-down. House Speaker Mike Johnson introduced a 1,500-page funding bill just days before the deadline, giving legislators, the press, and the public no time for scrutiny. This opacity creates opportunities for special interests to embed provisions that serve their needs while bypassing accountability. For example, the bill includes a pay raise for Congress while leaving the federal minimum wage stagnant, highlighting the disparity in priorities. President-elect Donald Trump’s scapegoating of Democrats for “pork or giveaways” ignores that this bill was a bipartisan effort in a Republican-controlled House. His rhetoric exposes the dysfunction and lack of transparency across party lines.
For young professionals, this lack of transparency should sound alarms. Whether in government or the private sector, decision-making behind closed doors leads to instability, distrust, and harmful outcomes. Just as organizations require clear policies and oversight to thrive, so too does governance. Without transparency, the public cannot hold leaders accountable, allowing the interests of the wealthy or well-connected to outweigh those of the majority.
Why Young Professionals Should Pay Attention
If you are launching your career or advancing in your profession, here is why this issue directly impacts you:
First, government shutdowns ripple far beyond federal employees. They disrupt private sector jobs, market stability, and contract opportunities that many young professionals rely on. For example, government shutdowns can delay student loan disbursements, reduce funding for career programs, and disrupt government-sponsored internships, which are critical stepping stones for many young professionals.
Second, policies shaped by billionaire influence have long-term consequences. It is telling about an administration’s priorities that values loyalty and money over knowledge and competence in appointing high-dollar donors to key leadership positions. Tax cuts that favor the ultra-wealthy while increasing national debt may not affect the billionaires funding these decisions, but they will impact you. The erosion of public services, increased taxes on working-class Americans, or both are inevitable outcomes, leaving future generations to pay the price for today’s political bargains.
The Modern Face of Influence Peddling
Elon Musk, America’s wealthiest individual, exemplifies how billionaire influence skews priorities. His abrupt opposition to the bipartisan funding bill, followed by President-elect Trump’s shift from silence to active rejection of the bill, highlights how wealth can dictate policy. The immediate result of their objections was a scraping of the bipartisan bill, and the government streaking toward a shutdown. During Trump’s first term, policies backed by Musk and other billionaires prioritized tax cuts for the wealthy and reduced federal oversight of corporations. These actions weakened labor protections and environmental safeguards, leaving young professionals vulnerable in their workplaces and communities.
The Supreme Court’s Citizens United decision has further entrenched this problem, transforming campaign finance into legalized influence-buying. By enabling corporations and wealthy individuals to pour unlimited funds into campaigns, this ruling has given billionaires outsized influence over critical government decisions. In the 2024 election cycle alone, Super PACs funded by billionaires spent billions shaping policy outcomes. This system drowns out the voices of ordinary citizens while ensuring that policy follows money, not the public interest. For young professionals, these systemic challenges are a call to action. Advocacy for campaign finance reform and ethical leadership is essential to counteract the outsized power of billionaires in governance
Your Role in Challenging Influence Peddling
As you build your career, remember that leadership is not just about technical skills or business acumen. It requires a commitment to ethics, civic responsibility, and the courage to prioritize the greater good over personal gain.
The lessons of Benedict Arnold remain relevant: When leaders place personal wealth and power above public service, everyone loses except those at the very top. Speak out against systems that allow leadership to be bought, hold decision-makers accountable, and lead by example in your own organizations by advocating for transparency and fairness.
Moving Forward
Understanding these dynamics raises civic awareness and improves professional survival. Pay attention to how money influences policy decisions in your industry, and support leaders who demonstrate genuine public service. Advocate for transparency in decision-making and maintain your professional integrity, even when others compromise theirs.
The stakes are high, and the time to act is now. Leadership rooted in integrity and transparency is not just a goal, but it is also a necessity for safeguarding the future of our democracy. Your political leaders have a fundamental duty to advocate for your community's interests and manage tax dollars with integrity. Fulfilling this duty requires sustained pressure from an engaged citizenry through voting and recall elections. Your generation has the power to restore this principle, but only if you recognize the warning signs and choose a better path while also holding America’s politicians accountable as elected public servants.

The Bitcoin Reserve Plan: A $100 Billion Gamble with Your Future
By Valarie R. Austin, December 11th, 2024, 8:00 PM EDT
(Previously Published on LinkedIn)
Cryptocurrency's powerful appeal to young adults is undeniable. A Pew Research Center study reveals that 42% of men aged 18 to 29 have invested in, traded, or used cryptocurrency—more than double the engagement rate of women in the same age range. For many, crypto represents a path to quick wealth, fueled by stories of meteoric gains. However, this allure masks significant risks that could devastate personal finances and, potentially, the entire U.S. economy.
Like student loans, which can burden young people with decades of debt, heavy cryptocurrency investments can lead to severe financial strain. The crucial difference? While student loans fund education that typically increases earning potential, cryptocurrency speculation offers no such guaranteed return. The Federal Trade Commission reports billions lost annually to crypto scams, with young investors particularly vulnerable to the market's extreme volatility and widespread fraudulent activities.
Following the Money: A Dangerous Political Gambit
Senator Cynthia Lummis's proposal for a U.S. Treasury Bitcoin Reserve would allocate $100 billion over five years to acquire one million bitcoins, which cannot be sold for 20 years. Advocates compare this to building a modern gold reserve—a dangerous oversimplification that ignores bitcoin's inherently speculative nature. While bitcoin recently surpassed $100,000 per coin, this milestone reflects speculative trading rather than intrinsic value.
President-Elect Trump's involvement in cryptocurrency through his family-backed firm, World Liberty Financial, launched in October 2024, raises serious concerns. His advocacy at the Bitcoin 2024 conference for government bitcoin purchases presents a clear conflict of interest, potentially benefiting his personal investments and those of allies such as Vivek Ramaswamy and Elon Musk. This intertwining of personal profit and public policy exemplifies the troubling direction of cryptocurrency legislation.
The risks of this taxpayer-funded venture are severe:
1. Market volatility could trigger massive losses in a price crash
2. Bitcoin's limited market cannot reliably handle large-scale government transactions
3. Artificially inflated prices could worsen inflation while enriching wealthy investors
4. Taxpayers would bear the full burden of any losses
5. Government investment could legitimize a market rife with fraud
Political Influence: Following the Money Trail
The cryptocurrency industry's influence on policy has reached unprecedented levels. During the 2024 election cycle, crypto firms spent over $120 million in campaign contributions, effectively purchasing bipartisan support for deregulation. This financial pressure produced immediate results in both chambers of Congress.
A stark example is the targeting of Senate Banking Committee Chair Sherrod Brown, who faced more than $40 million in opposition spending from crypto-affiliated super PACs—a clear message to any legislator considering stronger oversight. Even Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer has embraced the industry, declaring "Crypto is here to stay no matter what," demonstrating how campaign contributions can sway even the most powerful legislators.
The House passage of the Financial Innovation and Technology for the 21st Century Act further illustrates this influence. The legislation, supported by 70 Democrats including former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, weakens regulatory oversight by shifting jurisdiction to the more permissive Commodity Futures Trading Commission. This bipartisan support reveals how thoroughly corporate interests have hijacked the legislative process.
Protecting Your Future: A Call to Action
The proposed Bitcoin Reserve represents an egregious gamble with taxpayer money. Rather than allocating $100 billion to a speculative asset, these taxpayer funds could address critical issues such as a federal minimum wage increase, homelessness, child poverty, housing affordability, or universal healthcare. This misallocation of resources reflects a disturbing shift in governmental priorities—from serving citizens' needs to satisfying wealthy donors' expectations.
Young investors must recognize that bitcoin's appeal stems more from hype than sustainable value. The government's potential entry into cryptocurrency markets does not validate bitcoin as a safe investment; instead, it exposes taxpayers to unnecessary risk while benefiting wealthy insiders and corporate interests.
Citizens, especially voters, must demand accountability and reject policies that gamble public funds for private profit. Take action by contacting your congressional representatives to investigate the Bitcoin Reserve proposal and voice your concerns about using $100 billion in taxpayer money to fund it. Join or create discussion groups focused on responsible investing in your workplace or professional networks. Use social media platforms to raise awareness about cryptocurrency risks and demand greater transparency from political leaders about their crypto investments. This is not just about preventing financial risk—it is about preserving the integrity of American governance and ensuring public funds serve the public good, not private interests.

Leadership Lessons from Lincoln: Building Unity in Divided Times
By Valarie R. Austin, November 27th, 2024, 4:30 PM EDT
(Previously Published on LinkedIn)
In today’s politically divided classrooms and workplaces, young leaders face the daunting challenge of uniting people with differing perspectives. During one of America’s darkest hours, President Abraham Lincoln delivered his Gettysburg Address, declaring, "...conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal." These enduring words offer timeless guidance on fostering unity and inclusion.
On that November day in 1863, Lincoln addressed a nation fractured by civil war, appealing to its higher ideals. Today, we face our own tests of unity and leadership amid societal divisions. As both a retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel and a career readiness author, I have witnessed firsthand how the principles of inclusive leadership drive success—whether in military service, education, or the workplace. These lessons remain as vital now as they were in Lincoln’s time, particularly for those poised to lead the next generation.
Who Decides What It Means to Be American?
Throughout our history, America has wrestled with questions of identity or "American-ness." Who belongs, and who gets to decide? Immigrants, racial minorities, LGBTQ+ individuals, and others have often been told they are “not American enough” based on arbitrary and exclusionary standards. These challenges often manifest in familiar refrains: "You do not look like an American," " You do not sound like an American," "You do not pray, live, or love the right way."
This harmful mindset has left its mark on our history, from Jim Crow laws to Japanese internment camps to the forced assimilation of Indigenous children. Yet, America’s greatness has often been shaped by marginalized groups who defied exclusion and enriched the nation with their contributions. For example, a recent PBS.org documentary series highlighted the early history of Muslims in America. One story features Mahmoud Yarrow, a former slave who became a symbol of faith and resilience in early America. Another tells of Muhammad Kahn, an Afghan immigrant who fought for the Union Army during the Civil War. Their perseverance demonstrates that inclusion, not exclusion, drives progress. At the same time, the historical examples of discrimination emphasize the importance of taking action to confront injustice in all its forms to build a more inclusive future.
When Leaders Divide, Everyone Loses
Unfortunately, divisive mindsets still jeopardize America’s progress, as seen in the current political landscape. Whether it is an education superintendent mandating religious texts and prayer in public classrooms, or Donald Trump's nomination of Pete Hegseth for Secretary of Defense, such actions erode our nation’s solidarity. Hegseth's troubling statements about women in combat and "woke" military leadership undermine the collective strength essential for military success. As a retired U.S. Army Lieutenant Colonel who served in Desert Storm, I understand that military readiness depends on embracing diverse talents. For young people entering schools, colleges, and workplaces, this presents a critical lesson: true leadership unites rather than divides. Success in any endeavor from leading class projects to starting first jobs depends on bringing people together to achieve shared goals.
What Young Leaders Can Do to Build Unity
Lincoln’s closing words, “of the people, by the people, for the people,” call each generation to action. For young leaders, here are three practical steps to promote unity:
1. Promote Inclusion in Your Daily Life: Start small. Speak up when someone is excluded from a study group or project. Create spaces where everyone can contribute their perspectives. These everyday actions build the leadership skills you will need in school and beyond.
2. Learn from Our Full History: Understanding America’s triumphs and struggles give you tools to recognize and challenge exclusion. This awareness will guide better decisions as you take on leadership roles in clubs, internships, and careers.
3. Practice Principled Leadership: Focus on uniting others around shared goals. Even when facing differing viewpoints, choose approaches that foster collaboration and mutual respect.
By taking these steps, you honor Lincoln's vision of a united and inclusive America while building a foundation for your success.
Moving Forward Together
Lincoln’s objective of reconciliation was not just about ending a war; it was about building a better future. America’s institutions, especially its government, can and should advance the fortunes and transformative opportunities of its citizens no matter their race, religion, creed, gender, or socioeconomic status. As you take on roles as students, professionals, and citizens, remember that leadership is not about titles or position. It is about your actions to bring people together, value every voice, and find common ground. Your generation has unprecedented opportunities to shape inclusive communities and workplaces. By rejecting division and embracing resolution, you help ensure that Lincoln's dream of liberty and equality does not just endure, but grows stronger with every new generation.

Leadership Lessons in Self-Reflection: Learning from the 2024 Election
By Valarie R. Austin, November 19th, 2024, 1:00 PM EDT
(Previously Published on LinkedIn)
As a retired U.S. Army lieutenant colonel and career readiness author, I know firsthand the importance of self-reflection in achieving success. Whether in the military, a business, or a political campaign, evaluating both successes and failures is essential for growth. The Democratic Party’s loss in the 2024 presidential election offers a timely example of how organizations can learn and improve through self-assessment. For young people stepping into leadership roles, this process is a cornerstone of effective leadership.
Mastering the Military’s Secret to Success: The After-Action Review (AAR)
In the military, we used a systematic evaluation tool called an After-Action Review (AAR) to assess mission performance by asking three critical questions:
1. What went well?
2. What went wrong?
3. What can be improved for next time?
This framework, when applied to the 2024 campaign, reveals valuable insights about organizational effectiveness, communication, and leadership. For any young person stepping into a leadership role, an AAR can provide clarity and direction, turning setbacks into stepping stones for success.
Campaign Missteps: A Leadership Learning Laboratory
1. Misreading the Audience Costs Support
After President Joe Biden’s performance at the 2024 presidential debate, Vice-President Kamala Harris’s became the Democratic presidential nominee on August 2, 2024. With a truncated campaign schedule, the Harris campaign focused almost exclusively on seven swing states, effectively ignoring much of the country. While these states were crucial, voters nationwide needed to feel heard and valued. The campaign also emphasized issues like abortion rights and democracy preservation while downplaying voters' immediate concerns about the cost of living, public safety, and border security.
Ignoring the concerns of voters outside swing states highlights a leadership pitfall: assuming support without earning it. Engaging the entire audience—not just the critical few—is fundamental to building lasting trust.
2. Engaging All Media Channels Builds Credibility
The campaign’s reliance on traditional media and carefully controlled events proved insufficient in today’s diverse media landscape. Harris stuck to conventional outlets, while her opponent maximized reach through every available channel—social media, local news, television ads, and grassroots events, such as town halls. Many constituents who would not attend rallies could have been reached through platforms like TikTok, Instagram, or local news interviews.
This revealed a crucial truth: you must meet people where they are. Avoiding challenging platforms or difficult conversations creates a void that others will fill. In leadership, silence in the face of criticism is not diplomacy—it is a missed opportunity to engage and build trust.
3. Investing Resources Wisely Strengthens Connections
Despite raising over $1.5 billion, primarily from millions in dollars from wealthy donors, the campaign struggled to create meaningful voter connections. The focus on celebrity endorsements and high-profile events overshadowed opportunities for genuine grassroots engagement at the local and state level.
Resources are finite, and how you allocate them reflects your priorities. For leaders, investing in people—not just presentations—yields the greatest returns. Building real relationships and trust requires strategic use of time, money, and attention.
4. Energizing Your Base While Expanding Reach
The campaign’s failure to energize key Democratic demographics—including young voters, progressives, and communities of color—proved costly. Events like the ejection of a Muslim Democratic candidate from a Harris rally; Harris campaigning with Liz Cheney, a Republican stalwart and former Trump ally; and the perceived lack of empathy for the extensive civilian suffering and devastation caused by Israel’s prolonged military operations in Gaza further alienated key Democratic constituencies. Additionally, Harris’s inability to distinguish herself from President Joe Biden’s policies further turned off members of her base.
Leadership is about expansion without erosion. It is vital to remember that votes and buy-in are not entitlements; they must be earned through genuine connection and consistent action. Winning over new supporters should never come at the expense of alienating your base. Maintaining trust requires consistent attention to your core constituency while demonstrating empathy, integrity, and decisive leadership to reach broader audiences.
Building Your Leadership Foundation Through Self-Reflection
Transform Goals into Action
Leadership is not just about intentions—it is about results. To inspire confidence and drive change, leaders need to set clear, achievable benchmarks that guide their progress. These benchmarks provide a roadmap for success and ensure that efforts remain focused. Equally important is transparency—sharing progress with stakeholders builds trust and keeps everyone aligned with the mission. Leaders must also remain adaptable, listening to feedback and refining their strategies as challenges arise. This requires a willingness to step outside the bubble of your inner circle to hear diverse voices and perspectives, ensuring decisions reflect the realities faced by those you lead. Finally, accountability is key; leaders should regularly update their teams to show measurable progress and maintain momentum.
Forge Authentic Connections
True leadership goes beyond appearances; it is about fostering genuine relationships. Leaders can strengthen these connections by seeking out transformational mentors who challenge their perspectives and inspire innovative thinking. Listening is another cornerstone of authenticity—engaging with stakeholders at every level provides valuable insights and ensures that diverse voices are heard. Addressing criticism directly and with honesty demonstrates integrity and builds credibility. Above all, showing empathy and consistent action during tough times helps create a foundation of trust and loyalty, essential for lasting influence and leadership.
Convert Setbacks into Strengths
Every setback is an opportunity to grow stronger as a leader. Documenting lessons learned from missteps provides a foundation for improvement and ensures that past mistakes are not repeated. Sharing these insights openly with your team fosters collaboration and creates an environment where growth is a collective effort. Implementing improvements based on experience demonstrates a commitment to learning and adapting. Most importantly, building resilience through honest evaluation and accountability strengthens trust and equips leaders to navigate future challenges with confidence.
Charting Your Leadership Journey
The Democratic Party’s 2024 U.S. Presidential loss reveals a universal truth: growth comes from honest self-reflection. For young leaders, the lesson is simple—success is not about avoiding mistakes; it is about learning from them. Make self-reflection a habit. After every project or challenge, take time to ask yourself:
1. What worked?
2. What did not?
3. How can I improve?
Use these insights to set clear goals, share your progress with others, and stay accountable. Leadership is not about being perfect—it is about making steady progress. Start now, and turn today’s setbacks into the stepping stones for tomorrow’s success.
