first and foremost…
Love this shot of Shadra looking so studious with her copy of Wish…and thanks for the shout-out on your blog, friend!

happy birthday!
As soon as this migraine goes away, I will seriously start to celebrate my novel's "Encore birthday"…I was going to ask all of YOU to send in some photos—once you get your new copy of Wish, feel free to get creative and send me a picture, which I will then post on this blog. For now, enjoy these gorgeous images that I took when I got a SURPRISE delivery this morning…I thank the Universe for all the blessings I have received, including the best group of friends a girl could ask for…

I heart Hue-Man…
Since today is Valentine's Day, lots of folks are out and about—buying gifts and cards and teddy bears and chocolates and other red-foil-wrapped items for their special somebody (senseless consumption—bah, humbug!). I went to four bookstores today, and after having a less than spectacular encounter at an indie store downtown, I headed uptown to Hue-Man Bookstore and got the best gift ever: there on the shelf (next to Edwidge Danticat, no less!) was a copy of Wish—my own pink edition! I...
open society
I attended a talk at a gallery not long ago, and was amazed by my own impatience with audience members who got up on their soap box and went on and on and on, talking over the moderator and shutting down the panelists (and it was THEIR opinion I wanted to hear)…later I realized that that's one of the reasons I like blogs—if you're put off by someone's opinion, you simply leave the site. You don't have to endure endless rants or misinformed ideas or outright racist remarks that anonymous...

breathe…
Ok, maybe I'm not excited about the book launch—but I sure am anxious!!! Last night I fell asleep on the couch for the third time and woke, again, before dawn. I've got a little whirlpool in my stomach, and I have to remind myself—as I make yet another list of things to do—to BREATHE! Then, early this morning, I found a Google alert that led me to this review at The Defender's Online that fairly took my breath away—here's a taste:
Elliott does an excellent job of recreating 1863 Brooklyn...

ways to win
Aside from Christmas, I don't really "do" holidays. Halloween is probably my least favorite, but Valentine's Day is a close second. This year, however, I'm hoping you'll show some love and join in Ari's A Wish After Midnight launch! She's hosting a great giveaway, and has been a strong supporter of my book from the very start, so please do spread the word and/or join in! I'm also holding a giveaway on Goodreads, but so far over 750 people have applied to win THREE copoies of Wish. Your o...

ten questions
I feel like I've done a lot of interviews, and sometimes I worry about saying the same thing over and over again. Well, when Francine Thomas Howard asked me these ten questions, I really had to stop and think for a while…if you're around on 2/24, tune in to WNYC because I'll be on The Brian Lehrer Show from 10:40-11am. For now, swing by Francine's blog to read the rest of our interview…

Page from a Tennessee Journal
Is it snowing where you are? We're expecting more than a foot here in NYC—so I'm glad I've got food in the house and a few good books. The ideal book to curl up with on a snowy day is Page from a Tennessee Journal by Francine Thomas Howard. It's the story of two couples in 1913 Tennessee whose lives are brought to the brink of violence when the white husband becomes obsessed (or falls in love with?) a desperate black woman who believes she's been abandoned by her own husband. Many thanks ...

old NYC
BIG shout-out to Ranger Doug over at the African Burial Ground Museum in lower Manhattan. I went over there today to show him the new book, and he gave me an impromptu history lesson on the back cover image—even offering me a bigger picture of the original 1850 image! That circular building just off the tip of Manhattan is Castle Clinton…learn all this and more by taking a FREE tour at the ABG. Tell them I sent you!

time for tea
Part of being Canadian means I grew up drinking gallons (litres) of tea…still do, even though I sometimes prefer a mug of Milo (and I'm sure there's a colonial connection there, too). We're expecting more than a foot of snow tomorrow, so I stocked up on food and plan to stay indoors with a good book and a cup of tea. There's also some good stuff to read online: swing by the Brown Bookshelf every day this month b/c they're putting the spotlight on amazing African American authors and...
