Raised as an only child in a loving drug and alcohol-free family, led me to joining the Navy following high school graduation. I was proud to serve our country on the Theodore Roosevelt Carrier as an electrician, deployed on the initial Enduring Freedom mission following the September 11 attack on US soil. Following release, I began to self-medicate after being prescribed Ritalin during my school years, then required to go off it when joining the Navy. Following release, I started with alcohol short-term, then quickly moved on to marijuana, pills and finally opiates. This story begins with the introduction to opiates, depicting the rapid downhill slide of the insidious disease of opiate addiction. During my most recent jail stay, my father suggested that I write a book describing the reality of addiction from an inside perspective, describing my feelings and what and why I did what I did. Writing it with a little stubby jail pencil, then mailing the text as it was written, my dad assisted with typing and formatting. The focus is not glamorization of addiction, although rather intended to give loved ones dealing with addiction a better insight to the truth and reality of the disease, and to give those affected the reality of hope that I discovered. While in the Henrico County Jail East RISE Program, Recovery in a Secured Environment, I was introduced to the McShin Foundation in Richmond, VA. That changed my entire focus, without which I likely would not be alive today. I have the honor of having been selected to facilitate the Heroin Addiction Recovery Program, HARP at the Chesterfield County Jail, bringing the reality of recovery to many who have lost all hope. Diverting my career as an electrician and taking a significant reduction in income, I felt compelled to reach out, giving back and helping others afflicted by the disease a reality for a better life, and the caregivers a better insight to the struggles of those they desperately seek answers to try and help that can only be accomplished by one who has traveled the roadway of destruction and death. Never give up! Sometimes you must lose everything in order to gain anything.
