Here is our pick of some of the most interesting prehistoric sites to visit in the French Alps in the summertime. Click on the headings below to read more about each site and see their location. We will start at the welcoming resort village of Méribel, heading over to the border with Italy, and then south to find more intriguing sites.

Raklev Vriedysse
A dolmen on a round barrow in Holbæk.. There are four uprights and a large capstone. Cupmarks can be found on the southern upright. A Magnificent megalith with a great view from the dolmen. Top Painting: Raklev Vriedysse. "En Kæmpehøj på Refsnæs", Carl Bloch 1885

Majorville Medicine Wheel
"Canada's Stonehenge". Iniskim Umaapi medicine wheel site one of the oldest religious monuments in the world.. Medicine Wheel in Vulcan County, Alberta.The central cairn is nine metres in diameter and is surrounded by a stone circle 27 metre across. about 28 spokes link the circle and central cairn. In 1971 an excavation yielded artifacts which were "dated" by stone tool style. This method and radiocarbon dating of bone place initial construction of the central cairn at some 4,500 BP, although another source dates the initial site to 3200 BP. The tool finds indicate a succession of added material over the centuries.

LVR Archaeologischer Park Xanten
The LVR Archaeologischer Park Xanten in North Rhine-Westphalia is an archaeological park with a museum, the LVR-RömerMuseum. It shows the beginning of the ancient settlement in the 4th century BCE to the origins of the Roman city of Colonia Ulpia Traiana.

St Boniface's Well (Crediton)
St Boniface's Well is situated in a quiet, shady corner of a public park in the centre of Crediton, Devon. It is not far from the beautiful Holy Cross Church which is believed to stand on the site of an earlier church founded by the saint, who was born in the town in about 680 AD/CE, just at that time when the Saxon conquest of Devon was complete.

Crumpane Copper Mine
A prehistoric copper mine in Co. Cork, In blanket bog, on the summit of the North-West spur of the Slieve Miskish mountains. Copper was mined on the Beara peninsula in Co Cork from prehistoric times right up to the 1960s. Although the area had rich copper deposits it lacked any natural supply of tin. It is thought that West Cork copper was traded with tin mined in Cornwall and once supplies of both metals were established this enabled the production of the alloy of the two, which is of course, Bronze.

Karahan Tepe
Artefacts including carved heads unearthed at the archaeological site of Karahantepe in Turkey reveal the artistic talents of the people who resided there some 11,000 years ago. . Karahan Tepe in Sanliurfa province seems to have been inhabited only during the Pre-Pottery Neolithic period. Finds are categorised as architectural elements, finds with depictions and small finds. The small finds comprise tools made of flint and obsidian, chisels and adzes made of river pebble, beads, stone pot fragments, grind stones, and pestles. There are 617 small finds and 274 architectural finds; 266 of the architectural finds are in-situ T-shaped pillars

Cawdor
A standing stone approximately 2.1m (7ft) tall composed of conglomerate sandstone with lots of small rounded stones embedded in the rock. This stone is supposedly the last remnant of a Clava Cairn. Remember it is in a farmer's field but it is easy to photograph from the edge of the field if the field is in crop.

Gaer Penrhôs
Gaer Penrhôs, in Ceredigion, Wales, was a ringwork castle at the summit of a steep hill near the village of Llanrhystud; now all that remains are the outlines of its ringworks. Through the years it has variously been referred to as Llanrhystud Castle and Castell Cadwaladr and has likely been the site of more than one structure.
